Happening Around Town
After the hectic holidays, it is SO nice to be able to decompress in Charleston. Shopaholics can get some retail therapy at Town Center Mall. Charleston also has an interesting and diverse community of local shops that we love. Blue Grass Kitchen and Bridge Road Bistro has regular entertainment with terrific local talent and the month will end with the 5th annual Restaurant Week. It was five years ago this month that Charleston came to a standstill when our water supply was contaminated for nine long days. All schools and business were closed during that crisis. In an effort to help the restaurants make up some of their lost revenue, “Restaurant Week” was created. With local restaurants preparing specials and deals for their customers, it was a resounding success. Each year, the event gets bigger and better. This year, the tasty specials begin Jan. 29 and come to a close Feb. 3. After all the over-indulgence over the past couple of months, there are several venues in Charleston to help you get healthier and feel better. For runners and walkers, the riverbank along Kanawha Blvd. is a pleasantly picturesque scene to enjoy as you get your miles in. Yoga is also a terrific path back to good health, both physically and
mentally. Yoga Power at 601 Morris St. is offering a beginners Yoga 101 class for only $10! Wintry weather is a good excuse to check out the events at the Charleston Civic Center. The Christian music spectacular known as “The Winter Jam” returns to town Jan. 5. The Municipal Auditorium will present the Christian group “Bonray” on Jan. 12. If you enjoy kickboxing, the 21st edition of the “Rough N Rowdy Brawl” is coming to Charleston Jan.12 & 13. The annual WV International Auto Show is always a fun time for car enthusiasts and returns to town toward the end of the month. If you haven’t seen the traveling exhibition honoring our U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd at the Culture Center, it is still available all of this month. The Kanawha County Public Library and all of its branches continue to offer fun and educational classes and programs for people of all ages and interests. Check out its website at: kanawhalibrary.org. Sometimes January seems cold and bleak. But, Charleston always has plenty of fun and family friendly events to keep you warm! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

...at Fort Scammon
Mention Fort Scammon to just about anyone in Charleston and odds are good they won’t have any idea where the Civil War earthenworks battlement was located. The elusive fort, however, is rich with surprising, and little-known facts. Fort Scammon overlooks the heart of downtown Charleston, over 1000 feet above the Kanawha River. Two future Presidents of the United States served at Fort Scammon – Rutherford B. Hayes, and William McKinley. Fort Scammon is located on a prominence now known as “Fort Hill”, on Fort Circle Drive, and was listed as an archeological site on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Constructed in March and April of 1863, the fort’s site was chosen because of its position that overlooked Charleston and the regiment’s Camp White, the Elk River’s bridge and Kanawha River’s ferry crossings. It’s directive was to guard the Kanawha Valley and its saltworks against Rebel uprisings or attacks. Designed with earthen walls between seven and ten feet high, it contained a powder magazine and emplacements for a dozen guns. The triangle-shaped fort was about 300 feet long by 150 wide at its widest point. Additional gun emplacements were down the hill from the fort, but were lost when the Oakwood Road Interstate 64 interchange was built in the 1970s. Fort Scammon was named in honor of Hayes’ predecessor as commanding officer of the 23d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Col. Eliakim Parker Scammon, who left the regiment in October 1862 after being promoted to brigadier general. The fort was never utilized to fend off a Confederate assault. To celebrate the Union capture of Vicksburg and to give a belated tribute to Independence Day, the hilltop fort’s battery of cannons fired an extended salute, perhaps for the first and only time during the war. “Fired 100 guns and had a good time,” Col. Rutherford B. Hayes wrote in his diary. The member of the Hayes family who left the most lasting impact on M. Lynne Squires is the author of the award-winning book Letters to My Son - Reflections of Appalachia at Mid-Century, as well as Mid-Century Recipes from Cocktails to Comfort Food, and Writers on Writing. Visit www.mlynne.com.
Charleston was Webb Hayes, Rutherford’s son. Webb Hayes, a member of the Ohio National Guard, was called to active duty during the Spanish-American War. However, before his activation, Hayes and three other Cleveland businessmen formed the National Carbon Company, later known as the Union Carbide Corporation, which in turn developed into a huge presence in the Kanawha Valley. Hayes served for many years as vice president of that corporation. Homes were being built on Fort Hill in the 1960s and Charleston architect Robert Martens and attorney Paul Kaufman began a campaign to save the remaining portions of the fort from development. In 1970, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1978, the city of Charleston bought the parcel of land containing the fort for $75,000. The future president spoke fondly of his time in Charleston, where he lived in a small home he rented from the Quarrier family down the mountain from the fort near Camp White. His wife, children and other relatives traveled to Charleston to join him at the cottage periodically. Hayes’ family experienced tragedy as well in Charleston. In June 1863, the Hayes’ youngest son, Joseph, died of dysentery in their home at Camp White. As the hilltop fort neared completion, Hayes wrote to his wife, “Drilling, boating and ball playing make the time pass pleasantly. This is a beautiful valley from Piatt (now Belle) to its mouth. Make West Virginia a free state, and Charleston ought to become a sort of Pittsburgh.” There are no known photographs of the Fort Scammon during its Civil War days. A walk among the remaining mounds of the original battlements is a pleasant way to pass some time, remembering Charleston’s Civil War roots. Next month, Looking Back remembers Luna Park.

BE inspired in 2018!
Exhausted from what seems to be the busiest time of the year, it's been a challenge to find time to even consider the plans for the upcoming year. How will making your HOME a Great Place to Live fit in? As I continue to follow many of the colleagues in the field of Interior Design, I notice that while many common themes and ideas are in place for what we can expect in 2018, there are also distinguishing differences! Ours, basically a subjective path, also must follow some hard and fast rules to make sure our creativity plays out well in the "REAL WORLD"! Let's take a look at some trends you can expect to see in the upcoming year! Immediately catching my attention from several sources is the idea of filling walls with groupings! Photographs come to mind but one of my favorites is a home where we took framed Beatles albums and

MAKING HOME a better place to live 20 CharlestonHomeandLiving.com | JANUARY 2018 020.118.indd 15
filled a focal point wall surrounding the television with the memories of the lady of the house! Her collection over her lifetime now creates wonderful conversation when guests spend time in the home! Another exciting trend to watch is the continued move toward mixed metals! The days, although still comfortable to most, of using a strict metal element are soon to be a thing of the past. In a current project, we branched out of the "norm" and are mixing polished nickel with brushed nickel throughout the space in a (perhaps safe) move in this direction! Spa inspired baths will continue to evolve and I believe the idea of garden tubs will likely die completely in 2018 if the fatality has not already occurred. The move to comfortable and spacious walkin showers with multiple shower head and benches is the way to go! And they don't take hours to fill! As far as pattern is concerned, I am seeing opinions that run the entire range. Some are calling for more florals and some seem to think that chevrons are now overdone. Here's the
answer for me. When working with clients it is critical that we find out what they are drawn to with pattern and work from there. It's their home so we MUST ensure the beautiful and comfortable environment meets the client expectations. No sense in pushing
personal preferences when the goal is to make this space tell the story of the residents!
A final trend that I will be watching in 2018 is the balanced use of color and texture! Carefully planned and executed, these elements can correctly make the space impressive and inviting. Overbearing use of color or texture will likely cause the eye to miss the overall attempt to create that perfect space!
On a final note, take some time immediately to think about what's working and what is not! Start with this list to prioritize your home fashion for 2018!

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Place) is a stunning complex in downtown Pittsburgh.
A scenic three hour and thirty minute drive Northeast of Charleston on I-79 will put you in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Home to arguably the best sports teams in the country, Pittsburgh (the Burgh) will dazzle you with a historic past and bustling city life. The Burgh is formed at the junction of three rivers and has a whopping 446 bridges (more than 20 feet in length and the most in the world ) connecting the 90 citywide neighborhoods. Come see what this 20th century industrial capital offers.

WHAT TO DO ON YOUR WEEKEND TRIP TO PITTSBURGH Start your day with a ride up (and down) the Du uesne Incline for sensational photo-ops and views of the entire city. The century-old cable car is one of the few remaining incline rides in the country.

Penn Avenue is the most popular street in the city, lined with cafes, souvenir, and sportswear shops, along with international grocers and eats. Families will love Kennywood, one of the oldest theme parks in the nation with kiddie rides, roller coasters, boardwalk style games, and shows.

burgers and heavenly boozy (or not) milkshakes and craft cocktails, try Burgatory. I recommend the Piggy Butter Jelly burger with peanut butter, habanero jelly, and candied bacon. Primanti Bros. is synonymous with Pittsburgh. The restaurant is famous for local and craft beers and custom-made sandwiches with hoards of meat. The ingredients of your choice, plus hand-cut fries and coleslaw, are piled high onto thick homemade white bread. The taste is magnificent Try the Pastrami and Cheese.
Pittsburgh and one of the most famous places to visit is the Andy Warhol Museum, the largest museum in North America dedicated to one artist. Born in Pittsburgh, the talented Warhol is regarded as one of the best pop artists of all time.

The Gilded Age is represented well at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, circa 1893. Its Victorian greenhouse is stunning I honestly felt like I was visiting Central Park in N C. Inside, several Chihuly works of glass adorn the 23 stunning and distinct gardens, with renowned bonsai and orchid collections. Phipps is one of the many Historic andmarks in the Burgh.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, six-time Superbowl Champions, play at Heinz Field while the Pittsburgh Pirates can be found at PNC Park baseball stadium. If you haven’t been to a professional hockey game before, Pittsburgh is the city you will want to do it in. The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the most elite teams in the country, so sit back and enjoy the action of this high octane sport. Don’t be surprised to see a huge portion of the 2 million people in the greater Pittsburgh area decked out in black and gold Pittsburgh’s pride runs deep

Focal Point – Physicians Weight Loss Centers
Focal
Point
• PhysiciansFAST MRP: is a low-carb, high-protein meal replacement program. Specially formulated shakes, puddings, soups and bar supplements provide variety as well as structure, while focusing on calorie and portion control. January is named for Janus, the god of doorways, openings, and new beginnings in Roman mythology. In January, everyone equally is afforded the opportunity to start fresh, to begin again. Wiping one’s slate clean isn’t confined to the first month of each New Year, but more resolutions are made then than any other time. A recent poll indicates the top four New Year’s Resolutions involve losing weight, exercising more, eating a more healthy diet, and taking a more active approach to health. If you have made a similar resolution, what is the number one, tried and true, cardinal rule when embarking on a new diet plan? ‘Seek a physician’s advice before beginning any weight loss plan.’ Physicians Weight Loss Centers, like the name indicates, provide physician directed weight loss plans. The first step is a free consultation, where you are weighed and your Body Mass Index, or BMI, is calculated. Your lifestyle is discussed at length so the program you follow is tailored to your personal needs, activity levels, and goals. The professional staff consists of a physician, a nurse, and counselors, all trained to screen and monitor behavior management. Medications you are on are taken into consideration in developing the best plan for your weight loss goals. Physician’s Weight Loss Centers believes professional supervision, support, and proper nutrition lead to effective weight loss. There are online and in-center programs, both providing all the tools necessary for positive results. Six weight loss program choices guarantee an individualized approach toward your needs and goals. The programs are physician approved and dietician designed, ensuring the proper amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, essential vitamins and minerals. The six programs are: • The VLCD 700: is a very low calorie program adapted from the original Physicians Weight Loss Centers Ketogenic diet. Low in carbohydrates and high in protein, this accelerated weight loss plan provide three pounds or more of weight loss a week, as your body burns off its own fat reserves and create high energy levels. • Thermogenic LCD 1000: a low-calorie program using the advanced concept of thermogenesis. Carefully selected foods and supplements contain both appetite suppressing and fat burning ingredients. The variety of food choices offer more meal flexibility.
• Low Fat High Energy 900: is the ideal choice for anyone desiring food choices centered around the most nutritionally balanced selections with reduced calories to maximize weight loss. • Low Fat High Energy 1000: the choice for steady, effective weight loss, this low fat and low calorie diet allows more flexibility in meal planning. • Low Fat High Energy 1500: designed to support a physically active lifestyle, this option offers the widest array of meal choices. All the Physicians Weight Loss Centers Low Fat High Energy programs adhere to the guidelines for a healthy diet recommended by the American Heart Association, the US Department of Agriculture, and the American Cancer Society. Physicians Weight Loss Centers also offer vitamin supplements via sublingual pills or injections. These FDA approved ‘vitamin cocktails’ are formulated to increase energy while decreasing stress levels. Newly available are AM PM Weight Loss Patches. The 24-hour patch system’s fat burning and appetite suppressant properties are formulated to work with your body’s natural rhythms to support maximum weight loss. The AM Patch helps promote weight loss by targeting fat burning, increasing energy and enhancing metabolism while keeping hunger at bay all day long. The PM Patch helps promote weight loss with ingredients that focus on evening appetite suppression, reducing cravings and snacking, and helping you wind down to rest. As you sleep, special ingredients support continued fat burning and metabolism throughout the night. With over 38 years of promoting healthier lifestyles through proper weight management, over one and a half million Physicians Weight Loss Centers clients have reached their weight goals. Make it your New Year’s resolution to schedule a free consultation. In two convenient locations, Kanawha City and Barboursville Physicians Weigh Loss Centers are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00am until 6:00pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am until 2:00pm. Call the Kanawha City location at 304-925-4919, or Barboursville at 304-302-0292 to schedule a free consultation.
