Happening Around Town

The holidays are a happy memory, the snow is flying, and Charleston is a terrific place to cozy up and unwind. If you have a live Christmas tree to dispose of, you can do just that at Capitol Market. The WV Department of Environmental Protection is holding a tree recycling event through Jan. 5. For the 99% of us who are resolving to get healthier in 2019, check out the weekly 5K Charleston Parkrun at Magic Island. Every Saturday at 9am, athletes and hopefuls gather to walk, jog, or run, trying to better their time from the week before. It is a fun way to stay motivated and track your progress. It may be tempting to wrap up in a blanket on the couch after work when it is cold and dark outside. But, then you would really be missing out! Several local restaurants and bars have entertaining weekly events during the work week. There are even free Salsa dancing lessons and you don’t need a partner to participate. The 15th Annual Charleston Wedding Expo will quite the event at the newly renovated Charleston Convention Center & Coliseum (the CCCC). The premier wedding show in WV is a must-see for anyone with a wedding in their future in 2019! If weddings aren’t your thing this year,

The Harlem Globetrotters celebrate 92 iconic years of basketball artistry, comedy, and one-of-a-kind family entertainment as they return to the CCCC this month. The WWE Live also comes to town in January. John Cena, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose are among the celebrity wrestlers featured. Probably the most highly anticipated event for locals is the annual Charleston Restaurant Week. Local restaurants develop creative menus as a way to showcase their specialties. This event was born out of the WV water crisis in 2014. Restaurants were closed for nearly two weeks during to the contamination. Local residents and businesses came together to focus on rebooting the restaurants affected by the catastrophe. It was a huge success and is a “don’t miss” event for most Charlestonians. With Charleston’s new mayor, Amy Goodwin, about to take office and the CCCC remodel complete, there is an air of excitement with new beginnings! Happy New Year!!!

...at Watt Powell Park

Watt Powell Park was named for its primary benefactor, pro baseball player Watt Powell. Powell, a Hot Springs, Virginia native lived in Charleston and served on the Charleston City Council, as well as heading the Division of State Parks. The first ballpark was Kanawha Park, built in 1917, and funded by Powell and Charles A. Beers, a local businessman. The wooden stadium, erected on the corner of 35th Street and MacCorkle Avenue seated 3,500 people. The stadium was damaged by fire in 1939. But after hosting games for 27 years, the structure was totally destroyed by fire in 1944. A government bond, along with a generous contribution from Watt Powell enabled the construction of a new steel and concrete ballpark on the site of the old Kanawha Park. The new stadium held 4,474 fans. Known for its scenic setting, the outfield was framed by a ridge of hills. The stadium was known as a ‘pitchers field’ because of the depth of center field at 420 feet. Left field was 340 feet and right field was 330 feet deep. The outfield walls were 12 feet high along the entire perimeter of the outfield, which was higher than most other stadiums walls. The depth of the field and the height of the walls denied many a hitter of an out of the park homer. The right field elevation was above the height of the wall behind the stadium and many fans sat in lawn chairs along the adjacent railroad tracks to watch the games. In addition to minor league baseball, Watt Powell Park also hosted college games, high school tournaments, and community softball events. Over the years, the park was home to several minor-league franchises: • Charleston Senators 1948 – 1951, Class A Central League Cincinnati Reds farm team • Charleston Senators 1952- 1955, AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox • Charleston Senators 1956-1959, AAA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers • Charleston Senators 1960, farm team for the Washington Senators Squires’ new book Look Back at Charleston is a compilation of 24 essays and color photos from her column. Watt Powell Park closed in 2005 after the construction of the Alley Cats new home, Power Park, in downtown Charleston. Renamed the West Virginia Power, they continue the tradition of baseball in Charleston. Watt Powell Park was sold to The University of Charleston, who in turn sold two-thirds of the property to Charleston Area Medical Center. The old stadium was demolished in the latter part of 2005. CAMC constructed a cancer center on the site which opened in 2015. Watt Powell, a true lover of baseball, first as a player then as a benefactor, passed away on November 6, 1948, a few months prior to the inaugural game. He never saw a game played in the stadium that would carry his name. Looking Back remembers the Hotel Kanawha next month.

WHAT TO SEE IN CINCINNATI

The world’s most famous hippo, Fiona, can be found at the Cincinnati oo and Botanical arden. Fiona was born January 24, 2017, six weeks early, and the world has been watching (and loving ) her ever since. Other noteworthy exhibits at the Cincinnati oo include the World of Insects, elephant reserve, bonobos, meerkats, and painted dog valley. The zoo and botanical gardens are a National Historic Landmark and the country’s second oldest zoo. A world-class selection of art is on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum, circa 1886, spanning six centuries of artwork. Peruse 67,000 pieces of art in this stunning architectural gem, originally referred to as The Art Palace of the West . See masterpieces by Monet, Van ogh, and Botticelli, as well as local artists in this spectacular setting that has complimentary parking and admission. Pop in the Findlay Market for Ohio’s oldest farmer’s market selling seasonal items, produce, meat, owers, and gifts.
