Happening Around Town
Sometimes the best thing about February is that it is 3 days shorter than January! But, in Charleston, there is so much to get excited about. The Charleston Civic Center is hosting the ever popular monster truck competition “Monster Jam, Triple Threat Series”, the 49th Annual WV Outdoor Sports Show, and Disney’s “Frozen” this month. As the calendar turns to a new month, “Charleston Restaurant Week” is still happening. You do not want to miss the terrific specials that some of the town’s finest restaurants are offering through Feb. 3. The WV Outdoor Sports Show is three days of the newest in RV’s, boats, and ATV’s. There are exhibits of the new outdoor adventure opportunities for travel destinations, golfing, fly fishing, kayaking, biking, and so much more! Later in February, the Civic Center is also the place to be for the Christian concert series “The Roadshow 2018.” Jim Gaffigan, the Grammy nominated comedian, New York Times best-selling author, and star of TV Land’s “The Jim Gaffigan Show”, comes to the Municipal Auditorium. This will also be the venue for Grammy Award winning Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit Band, with special guest James McMurty. Charleston’s local talent continues to be tremendously entertaining as the Charleston Light Opera Guild presents “The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee”. This is an interactive production using members of the audience in each performance. This musical comedy is based on the book by Rachel Sheinkin and has been presented on Broadway. It is not based on our local Putnam County spelling bee competition. There will be a wonderful evening of acoustic music with Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin & Collin Raye at the Clay Center on Feb. 10. On the 23rd, the Clay Center will be hosting “TAO:Drum Heart”, which is a high energy performance of Japanese drumming and highly physical choreography. This group performed at the Vancouver Winter Olympics and will deliver a thrilling show that no one will want to miss! Fans of The Beatles will enjoy the Beatles Tribute, “A Little Help From My Friends”. This is a marathon concert of Beatles tribute bands, and it is a fundraiser for the Funds for the Arts. Hosted by Mountain Stage’s own Larry Groce, it will be a wonderful way to spend a cold February day! In February, we can officially proclaim that “Spring is next month!”. While we all look forward to warmer weather and spring flowers, Charleston is still way too much fun to stay home!

Five and a half hours Southeast of Charleston brings you to one of the most patriotic places in America. Fayetteville, North Carolina is home to the nation’s largest military installation, Fort Bragg, and the 82nd Airborne. It is a place with a deep-rooted history, local and ethnic cuisine, and military support. I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised by this Cape Fear River city.
