Happening Around Town

March is an exciting time in Charleston! Appalachian culture had its beginning with the Scotch-Irish, who were the first Europeans to settle in the area. The town pays homage to its history by celebrating Irish traditions all month. The 3rd annual Celtic Calling is a celebration of Celtic arts, culture, and traditions. The weekend long event includes music, dance, education, athleticism, and family fun. The St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl is a fun way to explore the East End. The Charleston Visitors & Convention Bureau’s website has a complete list of events and venues at charlestonwv.com. The Charleston Ballet performs “Don Quixote”, a live production of “The Wizard of Oz” comes to town, and “Jersey Boys” will delight fans of “Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons” with a performance of their best loved songs and the telling of their backstage story. Jazz saxophonist, Kenny G, comes to the Clay Center on the 22nd, and “Mountain Stage” has three shows at the Culture Center this month. Grammy award winner and Cross Lanes, WV native, Kathy Mattea, will guest host the first show. Country music star Lee Ann Womack will be featured at the last performance of Mountain Stage this month!

Kids of all ages enjoy the antics and showmanship of “The Original Harlem Globetrotters”. The exhibition basketball team formed in 1926, combining athleticism, theater, and comedy in their style of play. The team plays at the Civic Center Mar. 6. If you are itching to begin planting a garden, you won’t want to miss the “Winter Blues Farmers’ Market” at the Civic Center. Anyone with a sweet tooth will enjoy the “Sweet Charity” dessert competition at the Columbia Pipeline Auditorium. This is a charity event raising funds for Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley. Desserts and music by local jazz guitarist Steve Himes just can’t be topped. Wel, maybe with a cherry! Spring is just around the corner. Before too long, the daffodils and forsythia will be in bloom and warmer weather will promise even more fun and adventures! Cheers!

Looking Back

...at the mason college of music & fine arts

West Virginia does not lack for musical talent. The Charleston and greater Kanawha Valley area boasts a good number of their own musical standouts. Country star Kathy Matea, jazz singer Ann Baker, Grand Ole Opry singer Red Sovine, and singer/actress Ann Magnuson are familiar names to many. Collectively they have amassed armloads of awards and honors. A little known name, yet with perhaps the most coveted award of all is George Crumb. He was the recipient of a 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his orchestral work Echoes of Time and the River. His Poem for Orchestra was given its premiere performance by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra with his father playing clarinet and his mother playing in the cello section, when he was only 17 years old. Crumb’s journey to fame began at the Mason School of Music and Fine Arts in Charleston. In 1906, Dr. William Sandheger (“Sandy”) Mason, an accomplished violinist began teaching violin lessons to individuals, and voice lessons to individuals and groups at a studio in his home at 1206 Quarrier Street. Although the date isn’t clear when he began the college, it was sometime around 1909, as a concert was given that year. A faculty of four taught music theory, piano, violin, voice, and sight singing. By 1921, the school had grown, and had diversified classes to include music history, dance, drama, and the visual arts. Having outgrown his home studio, the school relocated to 1316 Kanawha Street. The staff was increased to over twenty instructors, including George Crumb, who taught woodwind instruments. In 1936, the school was chartered as Mason College of Music and Fine Arts. It offered preparatory classes for children, college classes for undergraduates, training for public school teachers, and arts classes for adults. Teachers ranged from Charleston natives to some who were fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe. Mason College’s biggest educational competitor was Morris Harvey College. Morris Harvey, now the University of Charleston, was a Methodist school that relocated from Barboursville to Charleston in 1935 to take M. advantage of the area’s larger population from which to draw students. Initially, Morris Harvey and Mason College were affiliated through the Charleston Educational Center, a program that sought to unify Morris Harvey with other degree-granting institutions in the city. After Mason’s death in 1941, his sister-in-law, Matilda Mason, was the college’s president for 14 years. Even though Mason College boasted a larger student body, in 1956, Mason College of Music and Fine Arts merged with Morris Harvey College. From humble beginnings in a Quarrier Street studio, to the grandiose Riggleman Hall of Morris Harvey College, Sandy Mason was key in creating and maintaining a creative arts community for the enjoyment and enrichment of Charlestonians. He was closely tied to the community through various vocal and instrumental groups he either started or supported. His influence was seen in the Charleston area as early as 1907, when he staged the Mikado to glowing reviews. He formed a string quartet, The Mason Quartet. Around 1912, he founded the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. A rival orchestra, the Charleston Civic Orchestra, was founded by William R. Wiant. While Mason’s orchestra was founded earlier, it was smaller and eventually folded. Wiant’s orchestra continued on and is now the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. The various buildings that housed the Mason College of Music and Fine Arts no longer stand. Riggleman Hall absorbed Mason College and now, surrounded by a growing campus, continues to this day to educate in music and other arts. Dr. William Sandheger Mason’s quiet legacy lives on in the vibrant arts community of Charleston. Next month, Looking Back remembers Staats Hospital.

March into Spring with If you haven't done so already, NOW is the time to organize a good plan together for your OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE! Whether simple or complex, all successful plans will help you avoid mistakes, save you time, and maximize the function! In all cases, as we MARCH into Spring, the consideration of TEXTURE is important and the opportunities are endless! Let's start with a simpler idea that is not only "easy on the eye" but perfect as an example of my favorite element in design... BALANCE! Consider the idea of letting nature add color based on plantings, overhead features (including the sky), and the viewable portion of the home. Add your ideas using clean lines, less color on main pieces and more permanent additions, and a great focus on the appearance and function your work will attribute to a beautiful, comfortable, outdoor addition. It (and all of the outdoor spaces) should make you feel like you are at the summer home or a favorite vacation spot!

The opportunity to add texture in this example is clear! Woven outdoor pieces compliment the trees and bark of the space in color as well! Adding more neutral base cushions lets the client "re-create" the space each year by adding pops of colors with toss pillows and other accents. Notice how the brick in the second example successfully pulls directly from the home. One feels as if this a natural extension of the indoor space!

MAKING HOME a better place to live

The textures are obvious in this next possibility and demonstrate a good example of what may go "wrong" in another wise beautiful outdoor addition. The idea of using stone textures to balance the softer natural grass and plantings is well played. However, the overuse of stone without any softening agents like fabrics or rugs make the covered dining area feel heaving and out of sync with the green-space beyond! While there is a good amount of fabric shown we almost miss it as all the pieces wash together. The idea of metal furniture only adds to the many "hard" textures which have already been committed in the floor, fireplace, and even the ceilings. Beautiful spaces that are out of BALANCE may not satisfy in the end! The next example is what one might

consider a perfect success! The extension of the viewable structure by adding the pool house to match, columns away from the immediate structure and green accents inside the new space are perfect ways to use texture! The stone columns create a fluid extension and the consistent use of the SAME texture makes it work! Bringing natural and softer textures of the grassy space and plantings into the conversation area is clever. Simple idea really, the color choice is perfect too! One cannot disseminate where nature starts and man ends! Well done! The final outdoor space for your consideration is one that takes an otherwise useless back yard and transforms it into a daily escape from everyday life! Because the back is immediately sloped into wooded area there was not much to be done. We started with a deck to create useable square footage and finished it in wood plank texture to blend with nature and white railings to compliment the home. We were then able to add pops of color in year one and more color in year two! This was done with the accents! The texture in woven frames conversation area, the more neutral tones of seat cushions blending into the texture of siding on the home, and the use of plantings to bring the woods and other natural textures into place are why this feels like a vacation retreat in the client's own back yard... literally!

In the end, your outdoor addition should offer months of comfortable living! Creating spaces using a good plan the may even be completed in stages will ensure a successful get-away for this period of time! Balance through function, style, color, and pattern are all required. Have you ever heard of a Staycation? It essentially means staying at home and vacationing in your own city. Since many readers of this magazine are actively seeking to buy a home, are new to the area, or might just be looking to learn more about their city, let’s explore Charleston, West Virginia.

WHERE TO STAY IN CHARLESTON Staycations are often spent at home rather than incurring a hotel expense, but should you like to venture out, there are many choices that won’t break the bank. The Holiday Inn Express Civic Center is in a centralized location with nice sized stylish rooms, complimentary breakfast, and free WiFi and parking. Some may prefer the Charleston Marriott Town Center, with really good onsite restaurants, an indoor pool,

and all of the amenities you would want in a luxury hotel. Four Points by Sheraton offers a spot right on the Kanawha River in the heart of town. You won’t get better views of Charleston than from this vantage point. For those looking to step out of the box a bit, the Brass Pineapple on the East End is Charleston’s premier bed and breakfast. This 1910 home is filled with antiques and serves a killer breakfast and afternoon tea.

Get your shopping fix at the Shoppes at South Hills with stores like Eggplant, Kids Country Toys, Eclectics, and Yarid’s Shoes. Pop in Sarah’s Bakery for the best pastries or quiche that you’ve ever tasted!

There is nightlife in Charleston, too. Popular spots include The Boulevard Tavern and Big Joe’s on Capitol street, the Red Carpet Lounge on Charleston’s East End, and the Empty Glass for awesome live music. Speaking of live music, Mountain Stage has been providing the mountain state with incredible live music from up and coming artists to crowd favorites every Sunday for over 30 years now. The show is distributed on NPR and can be heard on more than 150 stations around the world. Concerts typically take place at the Culture Center Theatre on the WV State Capitol grounds.
