Happening Around Town
If it is March, springtime is just around the corner! Daffodils, tulips, and forsythia are such a welcome sight driving down Kanawha Boulevard. You may even see kites flying around Magic Island! “Out of the Box”, a wonderful new showcase of antique quilts and other handiwork, begins a two-month long exhibit at the Craik-Patton House. The Clay Center continues to host the “Anne Shreve: A Painter’s Life” until Mar. 8. Also at the Clay Center, “A More Perfect Union: The Moth Mainstage in West Virginia” comes to town. The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. “Disney on Ice Presents DREAM BIG” will be at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (the CC&CC) this month. Highflying jumps, breathtaking ice skating and loveable Disney characters promise to make this event an experience your family will never forget. Another event that will be fun for the whole family is the Clay Center’s screening of the movie “ET, the Extra Terrestrial” with live music performed by WV Symphony Orchestra.
“March Madness” comes to Charleston in the form of WVSSAC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships being played at the CC&CC. At Shawnee Park Multi-Sports Complex a new event begins Mar. 11. “Jimmy Callahan’s Ultimate Frisbee Spring Fling” invites players of all ages and experience levels to enter the draft pool for the Spring Session. This coed event will take place weekly and finish with a tournament in May. Live music continues to be a big part of Charleston culture. “Mountain Stage” has two performances this month. The Main Library has FREE music every Sunday, CTC Mall has a free live concert every third Sunday, but the big event in March will be the “Country Unplugged Featuring Joe Diffie, Mark Chestnutt, and David Lee Murphy” at the Clay Center. A haunting, full length performance of one of the world’s most romantic ballets “Giselle” comes to the CC&CC Theater complete with iconic costumes and breathtaking music. There is much to enjoy in Charleston this month. Sports, wonderful music, amazing restaurants, and the beauty of spring unfolding promises to make this an exciting place to be!

...at the daniel boone hotel
he Daniel Boone Hotel no longer has a star studded guest list. It no longer hosts heads of state, rock stars or honeymooning newlyweds. The halls no longer echo with the maids’ chatter, and the ballroom doesn’t seat ladies awaiting a dance partner. The former crown jewel of the capital city, Charleston’s Daniel Boone Hotel, is now an office building.
entertainment greats visiting town and staying the Daniel Boone were Victor Borge, Gene Autry, Bob Hope, ebbie eynolds, ack Dempsey, Guy Lombardo, and the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. Some say the most famous hotel guest was Elvis Presley who visited Charleston in 1975, with his entourage occupying a whopping sixty-three rooms, including the penthouse suite.
Today people come and go visiting a dentist, attorneys, and other professionals that are spread out from the mezzanine to the penthouse. The lobby and the double me anine floors maintain a few vestiges of the hotels former splendor; the staircase to the mezanine floors, the registration desk, and the intricate hexagon tile work on the floor below the lobby entrance, and several original light fixtures. The original elevator doors still flank the gleaming brass US Mail box. A sign above each of the doors remind people that the lifts are no longer working elevators.
The ballroom is possibly the least changed section of the hotel. However, the me anine, once open to the ballroom floor below is now walled over, with only the front of the supporting pillars left in view. Most of the lighting is original, as is the mahogany wainscoting. One can imagine wedding receptions held there, with the bride tossing her bouquet over the me anine railing.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the former historic hotel was built between 1927 and 1929, then expanded in 1936 and again in 1949 to provide a total of four hundred and sixty-five rooms, a ballroom and three parlor meeting rooms. A Classical evival style ten story blond brick, the building boasts an unusual two-story mezzanine and a penthouse. The entire building was an exemplary example of first-class hotel architecture of the 1920s. The Daniel Boone was built on the corner of Capital and Washington Streets, the previous site of the state’s first governor’s mansion. After the nearby Capitol building was destroyed by fire in 1921, a temporary Capitol was erected where the hotel would later stand. Intended to be a temporary structure, the “paste-board Capitol”, as it was often called, was built in just forty-two days. In 1927 it also caught fire and burned to the ground.
n 1981, the aniel Boone Hotel closed. After renovation and remodeling the building was reopened in 1984 as 405 Capitol Street, an office building with fountains, a spacious atrium, two glass enclosed elevators and a 30-foot indoor waterfall. The exterior of the aniel Boone Hotel remains virtually unchanged. The awnings over both entrances are original and the fine detail work remains intact. The interior has a nod to its stately past, but primarily the 1980’s renovation takes visual precedence. A massive multi-level garden area stands in the shadow of a two story waterfall, overtaking much of the former lobby. The center of the building is gone, giving way to floors of balconies edging the offices where hotel rooms and suites once stood. The modern flavor of the remodeled hotel’s interior is lovely with an Art eco flare. But the glimpses of yesteryear leave a melancholy feeling. The memories of the Daniel Boone Hotel linger, vying to hold their footing as the grand lady of the city, while time marches on.
The hotel was conceived by a group of Charleston citizens known as the Community Hotel Corporation with the goal of providing a fitting location for hosting politicians and visiting dignitaries to the capital city. Wehrle B. Geary, a Roane County entrepreneur and developer of the Diamond Department Store spearheaded the building of the Daniel Boone. When the Capitol moved to Charleston’s east end, the new hotel served as the unofficial headquarters of West Virginia’s state government. The Daniel Boone housed many state legislators during the 60-day legislative sessions. Most of Charleston’s banquets and conventions were held there. One year saw the hotel hosting a convention of little people, or midgets as they were called at the time, with over eight hundred in attendance. A number of prominent people stayed at the aniel Boone, including Eleanor oosevelt, Admiral ichard Byrd, Presidents Herbert Hoover, and Harry Truman. Vice President Lyndon ohnson, and Sen. and Mrs. ohn F. Kennedy also slept there. Among the Squires’ book Looking Back at Charleston is a compilation of 24 essays and color photos from her column and is available on Amazon. Visit www.mlynne.com. 2016

WHAT TO SEE & DO IN DC
Taking on Washington, DC by Segway is a great way to see the city. Photo by Melody Pittman.
Beautiful view of the National Mall from Lincoln Memorial. Photo by Melody Pittman.
Washington, DC, is home to the most magnificent memorials and monuments in the world. There are two ways to see them: on foot or by bus. The downtown area has been redesigned to connect the monuments and memorials on a path system, making walking through the city much more accessible. Here is where you’ll find significant DC attractions such as the Jefferson, Korean, Vietnam, and Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, the Tidal Basin, and White House.
The majority of the most popular monuments and memorials are within walking distance of each other. Photo by Melody Pittman.
Another popular way to see DC is by Big Bus (hop-on/hop-off). There are three loops to choose from that take you to 30+ different locations. You can hop on, hop off as often as you like, and stay at each stop as long as you want. Some stops on the tour are the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Museums (Natural History, Air & Space, and African Art), and International Spy Museum. Ride

and is convenient for beating the Washington DC traffic. Do some shopping at award-winning independently owned Politics and Prose Bookstore before boarding your boat at District Wharf. Pick up a coffee and decadent donut from District Donut for the ride. You can also kayak and paddleboard from this location and do a Hornblower sightseeing cruise.

Central is excellent for fine dining with decadent dishes, such as Short Rib Bourguignon and Wild Mushroom & Kale Stroganoff. Central’s Bacon Onion Tart is a savory starter. Old Ebbitt Grill is an iconic eatery (and oldest saloon in DC) where you can enjoy a fantastic meal and possibly brush elbows with those from Capitol Hill, as it is a hot spot for senators and members of congress.

the red loop for 20 stops that mostly include landmarks and iconic attractions.
In Georgetown, DC’s oldest neighborhood with charming cobblestone streets, designer shops, and “political watering holes,” be sure to venture to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park for a gorgeous stroll. Shoppers will delight in the incredible shops at Tyson’s Galleria and Corner malls in McLean, Virginia, or Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, both around 20 minutes from downtown DC. Seasonal events in DC include seeing the blossoming Yoshino and Kwanzan Cherry trees, a sure sign of spring, or attending a sporting event at one professional sports team such as Redskins football, Nationals baseball, or Capitals hockey.
The Smithsonian Castle is surrounded by gorgeous gardens. Photo by Melody Pittman.
Families will love visiting the National Zoo, home to giant pandas, sloths, tigers, oryx, a Komodo dragon, lemurs, and much more. The zoo also has a tide pool, carousel, playground, and train.
WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK Per TripAdvisor, there are 2758 restaurants to choose from in Washington, DC, so you’ll find whatever food you are craving here. Founding Fathers is an excellent place for any meal. During breakfast, sink your teeth into Peanut Butter Banana Toast or a variety of Eggs Benedicts. For lunch, eat healthy with the Purple & Black Kale Salad, or splurge on the 7 Cheese Macaroni.

You don’t have to love historical monuments to enjoy DC. How about taking a water taxi to or from National Harbor (MD) to Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria? The ride over the Potomac River affords you a different view of the city
Martin’s Tavern is the oldest family-owned restaurant in DC. Located in Georgetown, Martin’s is where John F. Kennedy proposed to Jackie O, and they make a mean Hot Brown and Brunswick Stew, too. Get your upscale Asian fix at Nooshi, with everything from spring rolls to tofu fries, Korean beef buns to noodle bowls, and of course, sushi.

Enjoy Sunday brunch at Green Pig Bistro in Arlington. Green Pig doesn’t disappoint with the tasty Shrimp and Grits or Fried Chicken Waffle with sausage gravy and onion jam.
WHERE TO STAY IN WASHINGTON DC To pamper yourself entirely on this weekend getaway, stay in a luxury room at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City with the concierge level add-on (which comes with five food presentations each day), and visit the indulgent spa for your favorite treatments. The hotel is on the Metro line, DC’s subway system, that works by SmarTrip card. This will also allow you to take advantage of public transportation and keep your vehicle parked. There are also a large number of hotels on M Street in the heart of downtown. Chain hotels are the Westin, AC Hotel by Marriott, Sofitel, Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and practically any hotel brand you can think of.
DC: A DESTINATION WITH UNPARALLELED HISTORY Whether you choose to soak up all that Washington DC has to offer in terms of history, culture, outdoor attractions, and art, or spend your time shopping at some of the world’s top boutiques, eating the most delicious food, and pampering yourself, DC allows all that and more.
