“Spring is sprung, the grass is riz”, I wonder where the good time is! I can tell you: it is in Charleston, WV! April is such a beautiful time of year here in CRW. Sun shining, flowers blooming, birds singing, and the restaurants on Capitol St. are setting up their al fresco dining. The days are longer, Appalachian Power baseball has begun the new season at their park, and the always traditional WV Home Show is live at the still being remodeled Charleston Civic Center. If you are wanting to get rid of that winter cabin fever, Vino’s Bar & Grill offers free salsa dancing every Thursday. You can bring a partner, or you can come alone. It is all OK! There is a very interesting and eclectic entertainment menu this month in town. If you happen to shop at Cabela’s, drink Budweiser, and love yoga, “Redneck Yoga” at Yoga Power just might be for you! There is a fishing rodeo for children at Coonskin, a handbell choir festival and “Bollywood Night”, both at the Civic Center. This April, Christians celebrate Easter and Jews observe Passover. Later this month, women of the Kanawha Valley will gather at the Islamic Association to celebrate their faith and diversity with the Interfaith Council/High Tea. The Kanawha Public Library continues
to offer many varied workshops and discussions for everyone at all the local branches. Visit kanawhalibrary.org for details of all the family friendly events. Spring fever usually comes hand in hand with wanting to spruce up our homes and get that spring cleaning done. The WV Home Show 2018 is a terrific resource for ideas, vendors, and pretty much anything you can think of when it comes to building and remodeling your home. Professional theater comes to town with the live production of “Dirty Dancing” at the Clay Center. The Charleston Light Opera Guild will be presenting two weekends of “My Fair Lady”. The Friends of Old Time Music and Dance, known as FOOTMAD, have two exciting events in April and Mountain Stage also gifts the community with two live shows this month. When you blend the fun, varied cultural events, sports, and fantastic restaurants that Charleston has to offer, why go anywhere else? Happy Spring!

...at the STAATS HOSPITAL BUILDING
Some would say 1922 was a good year for entertainment in Charleston, West Virginia. The Kanawha Players were established, bringing local live theatre to the area’s residents. For entertainment on the big screen, the West Side saw the opening of its first movie theatre, the 635-seat Grand Theater. Located on the first floor of the Staats Hospital Building, it was flanked by a confectionary and an ice cream parlor. The cornerstone of the Elk River business district, the Staats Hospital Building was opened in 1922. It was a multi-function, four story building. The Glendale Lodge of the Knights of Pythias occupied the third and fourth floors. The fourth floor was primarily an open floor plan auditorium with a vaulted ceiling where meetings of the order were held. In existence since the Civil War, they adhered to a code of strict morality, absolute truthfulness, honor and integrity. A portion of the third floor housed a reading room, and billiard and pool room, kitchen, serving room and banquet room. A cigar counter was also located there. The structure was designed by John C. Norman, West Virginia’s first registered African American architect. Commissioned by the Staats brothers, the Staats Hospital Building features zinc columns, and reliefs of Damon and Pythias on the exterior facade . Prior to the hospital opening in 1923, in addition to the theatre and other small shops, the first floor housed an A&P grocery store, and was a temporary location for Kelley’s Department Store. The second floor housed business offices. Dr. Harlan Staats, an owner of the building and member of the Knights of Pythias, took over the second and third floors as a 67-bed hospital. In 1941, the Glendale Lodge of the Knights of Pythias M. moved out of the Staats Hospital Building. The hospital continued to serve the West Side and surrounding areas until the early 1980’s. St. Francis Hospital opened the St. Francis West Health Care facility and offices. After St. Francis vacated the building, by 2010 a single doctor was left as the buildings only occupant, utilizing only the first floor. The other floors fell into disrepair. The roof leaked. Any metal had been removed for salvage. In the early 2000’s, the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority (CURA) gave permission for the building to be razed. But by 2012, the Staats Hospital Building was placed on the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia’s Endangered Properties List. Purchased by local developers, a public/private partnership was established between the owners, CURA, a loan from the First State Bank of Charleston, a grant from the West Virginia Historic Preservation Office, and another from CURA earmarked to restore the roof. Years of neglect had rendered the jewel of the West Side a dilapidated shell of a building. The structure itself was sound, but the interior was in shambles. The restoration project began with clearing years of trash and repairing water damage. The tin ceilings were to be restored, graffiti removed, windows replaced and generally restoring the Staats Hospital Building to its former glory. Once slated to become a parking lot, the building continues to anchor the West Side business district, which is experiencing a revival as a thriving business destination. On Charleston’s north hill, the Spring Hill Cemetery is a silent sentry. Looking back visits there next month.

ecently I moved to a new home and the opportunity to go thru the life created and stored in the old home reminded me of what I always find to be the goal in my passion for design. As you head into Spring and the traditional cleaning that accompanies the season, a perfect chance unveils itself to bring great life moments into your home.
EVERY HOME should reflect those who reside within. Many moments are captured and then stored sometimes unintentionally forever in boxes in the attic. These treasures are what make our HOME a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE.

MAKING HOME a better place to live
One very cool “find” behind the sofa in my Den was a canvas painted by a friend from 9th grade at South Charleston High School, Nancy Riffle. For a special grandparent gift, Nancy painted a scene of the once present Christmas tree field and barn that are a permanent memory of my grandparent’s farm. The farm went into contract this week so these memories are never to be repeated. This canvas was returned to me after my recent loss of 103-year-old grandmother. Next find also hidden behind the sofa and now also placed in my Home Office is a great shadow box! My mom and her brother made these when we lived out west and the contents preserve moments from our time there! My grandmother seemed to always be reading at least one book at any given moment and she always encouraged us to read by offering to let us borrow something from her collection. THE HOLLOW HILLS is one that I didn’t get returned and now I have it as one of my favorites especially because it connects me to her! In my early career, a young gentleman worked for me who was the impeccable professional. He and his twin traveled to South America one year (he was about 20 years old) and these small statues were a gift
from his trip. He unfortunately ended up suddenly in the hospital that same summer and passed away presumably from and illness developed from the trip. The statues are ever present in my world to remind me that life is precious and can never be taken for granted. A PLAYBILL from one of my first visits and shows in NYC, a snake plant that has journeyed and grown with me for many years, and a pitcher that is one of my earliest memories from Mom’s kitchen. These things matter in developing a space that makes me feel “at home”.
Lastly two of my favorites… the original WEST SIDE STORY album that I remember as one of my parents first. It played in one of those old stereo cabinets that were an actual piece of furniture. It reminds me of my dad! The upper corner chewed by one of the gang. These guys are always around in one of my best memories… the picture on the steps. They are all gone now but this one connects me to a great period in my life. The point is this. A lamp is a lamp is a lamp… unless it’s a Ball canning jar filled with my marble collection and made into a lamp like my mom did when we were rebuilding our lives at one point in this journey. BALANCE is the ability to have a comfortable inviting and inspiring home that feels good and invites others to enjoy. The personal IMPORTANT pieces are the unique things that let people know us! These are the things that really make us smile, ponder, and reflect on what it is to have a home that is a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE!

WHAT TO DO ON YOUR WEEKEND TRIP TO CARRBORO Get in touch with nature at the orth Carolina Botanical Garden, one of the best collections of regional plants in the state. ou won’t want to miss the Pitcher Plants and Carolina Birdsin-a- est, two eye-catching plants that I was unfamiliar with. The botanical garden also has a large collection of Venus Fly Traps, which are grown right here in North Carolina.
After hours, head to the Baxter Arcade for a beer or cocktail while enjoying pinball, arcade games, and darts in this nerd-chic and funky establishment. Favorites include Frogger, Pole Position, Centipede, Galaga, Donkey Kong, and Game of Thrones pinball.
