May is probably the most perfect month of the year! Especially in Charleston. Spring is in full bloom, there are graduations, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day to enjoy, AND the weather is perfect. May means it is time for the Vandalia Gathering, “Live on the Levee” begins, and FestivAll treats us to a preview weekend of all the entertainment we can expect next month. This year, May 5 brings us the Kentucky Derby and Cinco De Mayo. The downtown streetfest scheduled for that day will be loads of fun, with plenty of food and entertainment. There are two charity sponsored 5-K walk/runs this month. For something really different, try “Irish Bowling” at Kanawha State Forest. That is an interesting blend of bowling and shot put. You may not need much talent, but you DO need to be strong, if you want to win! After Irish Bowling, you may want to check out the brewfest at “Foam at the Dome” at the WV State Capitol.
Ridge Boys”, for country music fans, and “Chicago”, which has been hailed as “one of the most important bands in music since the dawn of the rock and roll era” by former President Bill Clinton. Smaller venues make these concerts a special treat in a more cozy, intimate setting. CLOG (Charleston Light Opera Guild) continues its run of “My Fair Lady” with five more performances at the Civic Center. Fans of felines will not want to miss the “Almost Heaven Cat Club Show” at the Civic Center. This CFA, Cat Fanciers Association, presents an all breed cat competition that promises to be enjoyable for people of all ages. Speaking of being enjoyable for all ages, the Old Colony East End Yard Sale in the historic east end part of town truly has something for everyone! With so much happening here in Charleston, why would anyone want to be anywhere else?

...at the Spring Hill Cemetery
Peaceful. Intriguing. Reflective. All words that describe time spent among the monuments and memories of Spring Hill Cemetery. The seemingly nonsensical curves, angle and turns of the low stone borders lead around and past Charleston’s history, inscribed for perpetuity on marble, limestone, and granite. Viewed from above, intricately designed paths and walkways radiate outward from a rounded, geometric configuration. In 1869, Charleston’s officials sought out, and purchased for $2118.02, twenty acres atop the hill overlooking downtown. Although not designated as a municipal burying ground until 1869, the oldest recorded burial record is William Lewis, interred October 10, 1818. The Chalybeate Spring nearby inspired the name Spring Hill Cemetery. The ‘Old Circle’ is the original section, designed by civil engineer A.J. Vosburg, is reflective of a Victorian era walking garden. Charleston’s families of historical importance read like a street map. Ruffner, Quarrier, Dickinson, Laidley, and Summers plots proliferate the Old Circle. The cemetery holds the largest number of obelisk monuments in West Virginia. They mark the graves of prominent state residents, such as Gov. Atkinson, Senator John Kenna, Judge James H. Brown, and Jacob Goshorn, the first mayor of Charleston. Other monument designs are plentiful. The Littlepage family plot holds an enormous sandstone acorn. The Stump family plots hold stone markers fashioned into tree trunks. Poetry adorns the flat monuments covering several graves. The impressive Thayer Bowl is central to the graves of the family’s earliest members. Several feet away, an intricately detailed kneeling angel towers above the plots of the later Thayer generations. The angel statue is comprised entirely of zinc, giving it a bluish hue. The grave of Frank Cart, a member of the first locomotive union, is adorned with a train carved into a red granite marker. Styles of monuments, markers, and crypts range from Art Deco, Neo-Classical Revival, Romanesque Revival, and Gothic Revival. A fair observation might be that the older the grave markers, the more ornate. Newer sections, observed from the vantage point of the cemeteries crest, fall away to newer, less decorated markers. The mausoleum, located centrally, and below the Old Circle is heralded as M. the most architecturally significant. This is primarily due to the Moorish Byzantine design, wrought iron grillwork, red tiled roof, and size. It was built in 1910 and sold to the city in 1969. The crypts hold their own mysteries. Some simply provide above ground housing for vaults of loved ones. Others with ornate doors open into areas for seated reflection, and spaces for floral tributes. One atop the Old Circle area incorporates a stained glass window overlooking the city below. In fashion in the late 1800’s and early 20th century, the crypts in Spring Hill Cemetery are stately, regal reminders of the importance that was afforded to the deceased of the day. The cemetery contains numerous sections, including the Mt. Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery, the B’Nai Cemetery,the Lowenstein Cemetery, an American Legion field, the Confederate Veteran’s Cemetery, and a potter’s field. The potter’s field section is said to have a tree that was used for lynchings, and sounds of strangling are rumored to be heard from the spirits of those hanged there. Monuments exposed to the elements weather over time. The years of chemical valley pollution also took their toll. Nature does her part with lichens and moss. Cemetery staff clean and scrub in an effort to preserve the tributes to Charleston’s residents. Although originally a 20-acre cemetery, it has grown over the years to encompass over 170 acres. In 1908 and 1910, land was offered to the city by the Wood and Wehrle families. The city voted against acquiring the additional land for the cemetery and instead voted to use it for a park. A city park was created that was used until 1971 when the land was used to create the residential community, City Park Village, now called Spring Hill Apartments. Today, walking tours are given of the cemetery’s history. Bird watching clubs frequent the grounds to catalog various species. People walk the grounds to enjoy the view of the capitol city below, including a stunning view of the Capitol’s shimmering gold dome. Visitors come to view the resting places of both the famous and the ordinary. Collectively, they represent Charleston’s history. ver had one of those sleepless nights when the pillow was just not "working" for you? Or, forced your way through the same night when the mattress left a lot to be desired? It's that same old story of THE THREE BEARS! One is too HOT, one is too COLD, and finally the third is JUST RIGHT! The same can be said for the place you call "YOUR CHAIR"!
Most of us have that singular spot at home where we spend most of our time at the end of the day. And, even the spot designated to us in our workspace. The Chair! Most will also submit to the features and function of that chair as long as it's in the right location! Sacrificing the fit, the benefits, and the needs that this IMPORTANT piece should offer is a sure way to create a less than satisfactory
experience. Why not consider these attributes for the seat where we read, watch TV, knit, visit with family, and even nap? Price, color, and style are the obvious considerations. Moreover, we strongly suggest that while these are important to the look the chair presents in the design of the space, other (perhaps more important) questions should NEVER be forgotten! Here's a few to think about! LOCATION is one thing we probably most often leave off the list. For example, if you are leaning to a chair that requires electricity, is the desired LOCATION in the room going to allow for the cord to run to an outlet and is there an outlet? Cords running across the floor may easily create a hazard and obviously are NOT attractive. Another consideration with electrically operated pieces

LOCATION is also important to make sure the chair "faces the TV" for many. Consideration of how much space a fully extended recline requires might save you from disappointment when the chair hits another piece of furniture or extends into a main path for traffic. Often people purchase the reclining sofa (for example) only to discover that the coffee table is now in the way. The function of a piece is definitely part of any good LOCATION decision. So, let's consider FUNCTION in our determination of finding that perfect chair! How do YOU need this "home at home" to work? Think about these when searching for your next chair! Is stationary or swivel the best idea? Swivels allow for ease of movement to be a part of the activity in just about any part of a room. However, are swivels going to turn into a table and/or lamp sitting next to them? Would the movement or FUNCTION create a risk for somebody needing the arm support when climbing out? Motion of
furniture can be a wonderful asset as long as is well thought out! FUNCTION of a reclining piece is perhaps the most popular trend in upholstered goods these days. Again, what functions are important and will they serve as more benefits than issues? If a handle is the tool for operation, is it inside the arm or outside? Is it where the benefit will be in reach of the user? If a handle, is it easy to operate when an older person may be the one most using the chair? If it doesn't work well, the other considerations such as fabric, color, and style will suddenly not be enough to create a long-term happy experience! Finally, on FUNCTION, today's tech features are a real bonus. Keep in mind that chargers, docking stations, storage and more are available just about everywhere you look! And then let's consider those more obvious decisions. PRICE will often determine the number of features and benefits available in a chair. We strongly suggest that when possible, spending a little more will not only assure quality but also a chair that will serve the owner for a much longer period. If the chair ends up not meeting the needs, it will end up being replaced or (at the very least) leave us with a less than satisfactory experience about the chair and the purchase. The good news is this! You can find a chair that will work well for you in just about any COLOR, PATTERN, OR STYLE so it should always complement the existing space. Think about how the color and pattern will impact the "shelf life" of the chair! Is the current trend of color and florals going to last a while? How often to you want to replace the piece will certainly be relevant in those decisions. Also, keep in mind that leather can often be impacted by medicines that may come out of hair follicles, fabrics have a range of care instructions so that some may meet cleanability needs better, and both may add or detract to the experience. Avoid making costly mistakes by thinking about these ideas when you shop!

Driving 3 hours North of Charleston brings you to Canton, Ohio. Probably best-known for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton is a great place to visit with a Presidential library and burial site, art galleries, a classic car museum, and food tour, to name a few. Of course, you can’t visit Canton without going to the amazing Pro Football Hall of Fame HOF . xhibits include a vast collection of Super Bowl rings, Dynasties, an Instant Replay booth, bronze busts of HOF inductees, and a chance to have your picture made with next year’s Vince Lombardi Trophy.
