Happening Around Town

As COVID-19 continues, more and more everyday activities are going virtual. Worship services, business meetings, and classrooms are being conducted online. Even high school and college graduations are virtual or “drive-by”. Birthday parties and other special occasions are being held with the honorees waving from their front porches while friends and family cruise by with horns blaring and balloons everywhere. Hopefully, by the time Father’s Day rolls around, we will be able to celebrate more personally that we celebrated Mother’s Day! The hugely popular Friday evening “Live on the Levee” concerts held at Haddad Riverfront Park have been cancelled for this year. As of now, the city is planning a 4th of July celebration. The details involving that event will be announced as time gets closer. After 16 years of celebrating the artistic culture in town, FestivALL has cancelled all live concerts, exhibits, and other activities. It, too, will be going virtual. June 14-28, FestivALL will include at-home concerts by local musicians and other activities for everyone in the family. While the entire community mourns the cancellation of everything everywhere, there are a lot of ways to stay connected. Capitol Market is full of gorgeous flowers, plenty of plants, and is a very welcome return to “kind of normal” for everyone who enjoys gardening or landscaping. Alexis Palmer, the Marketing and Events Coordinator for Capitol Market, explains the outdoor market is now fully occupied with their regular vendors. 14 businesses have set up shop under the roof of the outdoor area and are open for their normal business hours. At the time this was written, the 9 indoor vendors were still working toward opening in safe circumstances. Regular spring and summer activities like the cooking classes

will be conducted in a different way. Details of the classes are being worked out and decisions are being made with the most up-to-date and safest methods possible. As frustrating and exhausting as the situation is, it is worth noting that COVID-19 is a global pandemic and everyone is having to cope with drastic changes in all aspects of life. Danny Jones, Charleston’s longest serving Mayor with four terms under his belt, has “retired” and opened the latest in a string of successful restaurants bearing his name and serving up his famous BBQ ribs and sandwiches. During a recent visit to grab a BBQ and Pepsi, Danny talked about the situation. He pointed out that the virus is no one’s fault. President George W. Bush predicted the probability of such a crisis during his term in office. It was inevitable that a virus would eventually sweep the globe and change life for all of us. It is likely a permanent change and we will learn how to work with it. Genesis Running Group has helped thousands of people in the area get off the couch and run a 5-K by gathering weekly and offering praise and encouragement while coaching the runners through a regimen whose motto is “Easy Start, Strong Finish.” That seems to be good advice for all of us now. Take it easy when possible, wear your mask when in public, and be grateful for the simple activities like hikes, picnics, and drive-in movies! As all of us make our way through this unforgettable summer, Charleston is a really cool place to have a stay-cation! Stay safe!

Voted Best Commercial REALTORÂŽ in the Valley As I looked around the neighborhood yesterday evening, I noticed kids playing in front of their homes. I saw neighbors sitting on their front porches and later by fire pits. I thought to myself, this is how we came up. Neighbors knew their neighbors and their children. I'm seeing old fashioned community seemingly sprout up from the ashes of this fire of which we have all endured. So, instead of losing your minds over the whatifs of the future, let us all rise up, be thankful and celebrate this day of rebirth. Easter is upon us. Like some of you, I haven't missed an Easter service for at least 40 years. However, that one on one relationship with Him doesn't have to be confined to the walls in which you worship. Wherever you may be this day, be grateful and have faith. Everything is going to be alright. The dreams of your tomorrows will greatly depend on the work and effort you put into the reality of your todays. Regardless of what it may look like, don't give up on yourself.

Where there is no light, be the light. Where there is no hope, bring hope into the room.

When others feel like giving up, show them how to continue moving forward. Together, we will make it through

...at laidley field

October of 1924 saw the dedication of new concrete stands in the stadium. The new stands increased the crowd capacity to 14,000. Many people with no inclination to attend a sporting event have been to Laidley Field. From 1947 until the present, the field has been the home to the Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival. Sponsored by the Charleston Daily Mail, and now the Gazette-Mail, the festival draws thousands of fans every fall to see area bands, majorette corps, and twirlers perform. In 1979, the facility was rebuilt. Owned by the Board of Education, it was home to many area high school and junior high school sports teams. In 2003, due to dwindling funds for the upkeep of the stadium, the Board entered into a joint venture with the University of Charleston. The university invested over $1.5 million to replace turf, add a skybox and locker room, and make other improvements. In return, they received field access for their sports and naming rights. Now called the University of Charleston/Laidley Field, it is an 18,500-capacity stadium. Charleston’s East End has been home to Laidley Field since 1919. James Madison Laidley was a lawyer and salt maker who served in the Virginia Legislature. One of his ten children, son George Laidley, became an educator and superintendent of schools in Charleston. Laidley Field was named in his honor. The original field had wooden bleachers that rose 12 feet high with ten rows of seating. Sections of seating could be moved as needed by a team of horses. The first football game was played there on November 8, 1919, featuring WVU and a tiny school, Centre College of Kentucky. From 1895 through 1949, WVU played a game almost annually in Charleston. The WVU-Centre matchup was a day-long event. The WVU band paraded through the streets of the city, ending on the field. At halftime, the band played, and the fans gathered on the field in a snake dance while the band played ‘Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here.’

In addition to UC sporting events, the stadium hosts state track and field championship, multiple high school playoff games, the Majorette and Band Festival, and other activities. Many notable athletes have played at Laidley Field over the years. These include Frank Criniti (Notre Dame), Dennis Harrah (Miami FL and the L.A. Rams), Billy Williams (Kentucky), and others.

Next month, Looking Back remembers Stonewall Jackson High School.

The game drew a record crowd of over 5,000 fans. Centre College, with a student enrollment of only 203 students, made a mark for themselves that day by defeating WVU 14-6. Incredibly, Centre College went on to finish in the top 5 teams in the nation that year, alongside Harvard, Illinois, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M. On November 10, 1923, tragedy befell Laidley Field. WVU was playing Washington and Lee, and with 960 fans in one section of the south stands, the spectators had several seconds of warning sounds of wood cracking and splintering before the wooden stands collapsed to the ground. Sixty persons were injured, and 25 of those were rushed to area hospitals. A fence to the field was laid down to allow ambulances and other vehicles pressed into transport service access to the injured. After a pause, the game resumed even as the wounded were tended to on the sidelines. The most severe injuries were broken bones.

state park, this scenic wonder is used for hiking, kayaking, water trikes, boating, diving, hunting, skiing, and biking. Fishing is hugely favored, and you can fish for trout, walleye, or bass. PI, a National Natural Landmark, is also a top spot for world-class bird watching. Beach 10 (between Gull and Sunset Points) is a favorite for family fun and swimming. You can also rent houseboats to enhance your visit and stay in Erie.

A fun indoor thing to do in Erie is to test your wits in The Niagara Room at Escape Game Erie. You’ll need to use your math and reasoning skills to get out of the locked room to win the game. Kids will appreciate the Erie Zoo for a nice collection of red panda, rhinos, lions, penguins, monkeys, and even farm animals. Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park and Experience Children’s Museum (with a water table and mini-Wegman’s grocery store) are also things they would enjoy in Erie.

non-stop 50s music and is a real crowd-pleaser. Sara’s Restaurant features American eats and sweets and is at the entrance of Presque Isle. Whether eating hotdogs, hamburgers, thick-sliced onion rings, fried zucchini, or drinking thick and creamy milkshakes, you are sure to love this lively and picturesque restaurant.

Enjoy a cold beer or creative cocktail from Molly Brannigan’s modern Irish pub. You can also watch sporting events and partake in a great happy hour there. If you are not familiar with ice wine (made from grapes harvested by hand at 17-degree temperatures), try a glass of this regional specialty at the award-winning Mazza Vineyards. It is delicious!

The whole family will love learning at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. The three-level whimsical hand-carved wooden whirligigs grab your attention at the entrance while climbing to the top of the glass-enclosed tower offers incredible panoramic views of Presque Isle. Tom Ridge has interactive exhibits, a Big Green Screen Theatre (IMAX), cafe, and gift shop. Fall brings a most exciting festival to Erie when 10+ tall ships come for a three-day maritime celebration. An off-the-beaten-path find is Schaefer’s Auto Art, a local landmark, with sculptures made from recycled metal and car parts.

Enjoy a delectable dinner in a sophisticated setting from Cloud 9 Wine Bar, complete with a vast list of artisanal wines from around the globe. The farm-to-table menu includes appetizers, like loaded deviled eggs and walnut crusted Brie, and a smoky Delmonico steak for dinner. Pineapple Eddie’s Southern Bistro is another tasty choice with Southern and Caribbean cuisine. The crabmeat hushpuppies are billowy and full of flavor, and the Southern fried chicken is fantastic. Save room for the homemade desserts.

Check out the Spencer House or Victorian Inn B&Bs for something more romantic or intimate. Both feature free breakfast and Wifi and offer a great alternative to traditional lodging.

It is within walking distance to many attractions and has lovely appointed spacious guest rooms. Highlights of the Courtyard include a fabulous bed, couches with ottomans, flat-panel TVs, and free Wifi. There is also a Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel nearby.

Erie is a delightful city with spectacular Lake Erie views and access, outdoor attractions, beaches, and history. There are plenty of fun things to see and do that can work for all ages. Enjoy your time in the Flagship City, Pennsylvania’s main access point to the gorgeous Great Lakes.  Photo by Melody Pittman.
