Summer is going full blast, and we aren’t just talking HEAT! Fireworks, music, beauty pageants, and a WWE exhibition match are just a few of the fun ways the family can enjoy summertime in Charleston. Free concerts, 5-K runs, cooking classes, and an interesting, eclectic schedule of events at the local libraries mean you don’t have to pay a dime for many of the activities in town this summer. The Juliet Art Museum in the Clay Center is currently the site for the traveling art exhibit “30 Americans” until August 19. This exhibit showcases works by many of the most important African American artists of the past three decades. The Clay Center is also the venue for “US FLOYD - LIVE”. Combining powerful and complex music with the lighting and audio-visual effects you would expect from an authentic Pink Floyd concert experience, US FLOYD is known as the Ultimate Pink Floyd Tribute band. Haddad Riverfront Park continues to rock on the riverbanks each Friday evening with the free “Live on the Levee” concerts. Also at Haddad Park, on Tuesday, July 3, celebrate American’s birthday a day early when the West Virginia Symphony Brass Band will perform in synchronization with the biggest and most thrilling fireworks display in the area!
July 1-31:
The inaugural Charleston Cycling Classic will take place July 21-22. This is a three-event, two-day race testing cyclists with an individual time trial, a criterium, and a road race to determine an over-all winner. The Kanawha Boulevard has undergone a renovation with the addition of a running and bicycle path in the western part of the city. Even if you are not a competitive bicyclist, you can definitely enjoy a ride along the Kanawha River bank with a cool breeze to balance the hot summer sun. If you enjoy running, there is a free 5-K Charleston Parkrun at 8am every Saturday through October at Magic Island. Bring your family and let them see how much fun getting healthy can be! There is so much to enjoy in Charleston in July. Before we know it, summer will be on the wane, school will be starting, and the time for leisurely fun will be over until next year! ...at the Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church
As the Civil War was ending, a church, known today as the Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church, was just beginning in Charleston. In 1864, the Washington Conference of the Methodist Church was organized, just one year before the Simpson group began worship services. The first minister was sent by the Washington Conference in 1866, the Reverend C.O. Fisher. The congregation had been worshiping in the church basement of Asbury Methodist. Around 1869 the congregation moved into a downtown building on Quarrier Street near Capitol Street. By 1870, the growing congregation led the church officials to purchase property and build a frame structure near the corner of Quarrier and Dickinson Streets. In January 1887, this third church home of Simpson was destroyed by fire. Rebuilding began immediately on the same site and was completed in 1888, and the church was officially named Simpson Methodist Episcopal Church. The congregation continued to worship there until the building and lot were sold. Proceeds from the sale were used to purchase the lot at 607 Shrewsbury, were the present church still sits. In 1914, construction began on the current building. The late Gothic Revival structure was designed by architect David Dick, who also designed the Nicholas County Courthouse. Brick with a slate roof, the church sits at the north end of Shrewsbury Street in a historic AfricanAmerican neighborhood near the business center of Charleston. The nearly square building is on a high foundation, with a steeply pitched hipped roof with platform and 4-story square bell tower. The tower originally had a decorative stone parapet and corner finials. The loss of these, while unfortunate, in no way reduces the stately appearance of the structure. Red brickwork and limestone banding provide distinctive exterior details. A limestone cornerstone to the right of the entrance double door contains the inscription “Simpson Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church” and the dates 1866, 1887, and 1914. The church’s large sanctuary features Gothic styled stained-glass winM. dows that flood the sanctuary with light. The eastern window was damaged by a fire in 1988, was replaced with a nearly exact copy depicting Jesus with the flock. The north window portrays Jesus in the garden. On May 10, 1939, the reorganization of Methodism in the United States saw the joining of three great churches of the faith: the Methodist Episcopal, the Methodist Episcopal South, and the Methodist Protestant. As a result, the Simpson church dropped the ‘Episcopal’ and the church was known from then to present day as the Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church. Simpson not only survived, but thrived during the segregation years of both church and state. At one time the membership swelled to 700 members, serving the burgeoning African-American community in Charleston. When the present church was being built in 1914, Simpson was an integral part of the Charleston residential neighborhood in and around the downtown area. Brick-paved Shrewsbury Street was a main artery in downtown Charleston, and the church was central to many businesses and homes of its’ parishioners. During the 1960s and 1970s the population of the neighborhood changed due to inner city housing developments, population shifts, and urban development, resulting in less of a concentrated presence of the African-American community in close proximity to Simpson. Businesses closed or relocated. Homes were razed for new developments. In spite of this, today, the church maintains cultural traditions of the community begun nearly 150 years ago. The Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church building remains a prominent historical structure in downtown Charleston. The foundation remains solid, both for the building, and the parishioners. In August, Looking Back remembers the Greyhound Bus Station on Summers Street in Charleston.

COOL Things about a Hot Summer! I
t's the heat of July and we are trying to find shelter from those high temperatures! It's also a great time to think about what some cool trends, and hot considerations that will create the perfect home environment for the second half of the year and years to follow!
A couple of noteworthy possibilities for us to address in this article are color and texture! ALL can be covered in one aspect of well-balanced interior or exterior design. Fabrics provide a wonderful opportunity to look at color as well as texture! And, this summer is NO EXCEPTION. Looking to create that cool, airy, and comfortable space, note the use this year of softer colors. While these are often contrasted with more extremes by adding pops of bold color, the use of the sherbets, as we like to call them, is an important tool to lower the thermostat visually in the home during the summer months!

The "hand" of fabric is always important as it impacts the comfort, wear, and tailoring of an upholstered piece. Surprisingly to some, harder finishes and tight flat weaves are an abundant source this year! Not only in the traditional forms but in more pronounced weaves to make the ideas more obvious! These fabrics tend to tailor extremely well and offer great performance as well! Heavy velvets and micro suedes are also
offering great performance but again are creating reactions as the weights seem denser than in the past! Excitedly, this will create some of the most comfortable upholstery opportunities we have seen in a while! Using patterns is always a perfect opportunity to "freshen" any room by changing out accents such as pillows, rugs, and lamps! These, also, are
available for Summer 2018 in great shades of soft colors and styles using both traditional and updated inspiration! The ational Museum of the USAF United States Air Force is a must-see. Its vast collection of aircrafts many from the early 1900’s is a delight to walk through and see how aviation has changed over the years. There is even a space shu le exhibit.
