Happening Around Town

2020 is almost half over and most of us are already TOTALLY over it! July will be the fifth month we have been practicing social distancing, wearing masks, washing our hands more than ever, and learning a brand new “normal”. But, even the COVID-19 cloud has a silver lining! As schools and businesses gradually re-open, nearly everyone has a new appreciation for simple things. And for each other. That is always a good thing. This time last year, Charleston’s big news was the $100 million renovation of the old Charleston Civic Center. It is now the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. This year, the Charleston branch of the Kanawha Public Library begins its $24 million renovation project. The main branch at 123 Capitol St. has closed and most of the books are now at the temporary library at the Charleston Town Center Mall. The renovation and addition of 20,000 square feet is expected to be completed in February 2022. This will include a large meeting area and a café. But in the meantime, the CTC Mall is a convenient place to hang out, find the latest new releases, and grab a Starbucks. Especially during these hot summer months. In June, the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences began a soft reopening as it began offering the popular “day camp” programs. Details for these can be found on their website. Most concerts and shows have been postponed indefinitely. The Clay Center has begun additional sanitary practices which include an ultra-violet system with the H-VAC units. They are also getting creative about how the space is used. New ideas are being implemented with the Susan Runyan Maier Sculpture Garden. Stay tuned as the staff announces more events.

The sports world is also having a slow and gradual roll-out of events. “Low Contact” events, like soccer and Little League, have gotten the OK to restart. The individual teams and organizations are deciding when and how to safely begin. Big news at the Shawnee Sports Complex is the opening of the club house sports bar and grill, “The Pitch”. The completely redone interior, from floor to ceiling, is stunning. There is even an upstairs loft with its own bar. Debuting 24 taps of mainly local beers and a very creative food menu, “The Pitch” is sure to be a fun place to meet up with friends. Many locals were sad to hear the restaurant at South Hills Market had closed permanently. Fortunately, “1010 Bridge Restaurant and Catering” will be opening in July, occupying the same space. The owners plan to feature “Appalachian dishes with a low-country influence”. After enduring months of a global pandemic, the opening of TWO new restaurants in town is very exciting. There are still many local events to be experienced virtually, but “Let’s Roam’s Charleston Scavenger Hunt: An Outdoor Activity in Charleston” is a super fun way to get out of the house with the family and explore the town. This $11 app for smartphones is an activity can almost anyone can enjoy. Lace up your walking shoes, snap photos, race against the clock, and experience Charleston in a brand new way! No doubt about it, CharleyWest is a great place for a “staycation”! Enjoy summer and STAY SAFE!

Voted Best Commercial REALTORÂŽ in the Valley I would like to invite any persons or company who would like to do business,

raise a family, build their factory, or simply relocate from mindlessness, violence, and total disrespect, to West Virginia. We are not in any way perfect, however, we stand together in bringing about change. I've witnessed a few peaceful protest of those exercising their rights, but I've also had a seat at the table where change and solutions are taking place. Where there is dialog, you will find effective change for all taking place. On the other hand, WV has more Veterans than most. Stay out if you're trouble. We don't need folks with their own agenda and narrative coming here to disrupt relationships that have been established between our citizens, law enforcement, and leadership. Frankly, I was a part of building some of those relationships that are still in place. Take care out there, and may God Bless America. www.dukejordan.com "SEMPER FI DEVIL DOGS"

...at Stonewall Jackson High School boy during the summers while attending SJHS. One-hundred and ninety-four of his works were reprinted in Reader’s Digest, and radio commentator Paul Harvey often quoted him. Football great Dennis Wayne Harrah grew up on Charleston’s west side and was an all-state center in 1970 for the Stonewall Jackson Generals. In 1975, he was the first-round draft pick of the Los Angles Rams. In 2013, Harrah was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Stonewall Jackson High School was built in 1940 to deal with the overcrowding of Charleston High School. Fast forward 49 years, and it was consolidated with Charleston High School to merge the two schools with dwindling enrollment. The new school, Capitol High, opened amid fears that the two fierce rivals wouldn’t co-exist peacefully; however, the 49-year rivalry ended with amicably. Sitting atop a rolling hillside on Charleston’s west side in the Edgewood neighborhood, Stonewall Jackson is an imposing structure. Wide twin stairs climb from Washington Street below to the front doors that have opened to area students for over 80 years.

Architect Paul D. Marshall graduated from Stonewall Jackson in 1948. He was a fourth-generation glass cutter, working at Libbey-Owens-Ford in Kanawha City before going on to apprentice with two architectural firms in Charleston. He is renowned for his preservation and restoration work in prominent buildings and structures. These include the State Capitol, Old Main at Marshall University, Woodburn Hall at West Virginia University, Graceland, Glenwood, the Frist Presbyterian Church, Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars, and many other projects in and out of the state. Now named Stonewall Jackson Middle School, the sprawling yellow brick school still houses students, and along with Horace Mann Middle School, is a feeder school for Capital High School. In recent years, there have been efforts to rename the school. Emotions run high on either side of the fence. One suggestion was to rename it Katherine Johnson High School, after the White Sulpher Springs native who worked as a mathematician for NASA. Others object, wanting to leave the school with the name as it was when they attended in years past.

The school mascot was the General, but in later years, most referred to Stonewall Jackson High School as ‘The Wall.’ This was partly an abbreviation of ‘Stonewall,’ and largely a nod to the powerhouse sports teams the school fielded. In 1967 and 1987, Stonewall was the state runner-up in football. But in 1974 and 1986, Stonewall captured the state football championship title. Several individuals of note attended Stonewall Jackson High School. Born in 1941, sculptor P. Joseph Mullins graduated from SJHS. He is the designer of the West Virginia Veterans’ Memorial and the Female West Virginia Veteran memorial statue on the state capitol grounds. Sara Jane Kahn graduated from SJHS in 1947. Better known by her married name, Sara Jane Moore, she attempted to assassinate President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. James Fredrick Dent was a prolific writer, humorist, and political cartoonist. He authored the well-loved column ‘The Gazetteer” in the Charleston Gazette, where he began working as a copy

Blue Ridge Mountains in North Georgia. Photo by Melody Pittman.

Driving six hours southwest of Charleston takes you to North Georgia. The area is filled with adorable mountain towns, each offering its own flair and fun. Just between the towns of Young Harris and Hiawassee, you will have an abundance of things to see and do on your weekend getaway. The winding and curvy roads will make you feel like you are in the mountains of West Virginia.

WHAT TO SEE & DO IN NORTH GA

Blue Hole Falls.  Photo by Melody Pittman.

16 CharlestonHomeandLiving.com | JULY 2020 016.720.indd 2

Hiking (especially the Appalachian Trail) and chasing waterfalls are the top things to do in North Georgia. Some falls can be seen from a walkout area, but others require hiking to get there. Blue Hole Falls is a one-mile hike through an amazing landscape. A swimming hole at the bottom of the falls provides a refreshing drink or cool-down spot at the bottom. You’ll find a second waterfall, High Shoals, on the same trail. You will experience an exciting drive and

amazing 360-degree panoramic views as you wind your way up Bell Mountain, a park and historic site in Hiawassee. Similar to driving Route 60 around Hawks Nest, once you park your car at the top, walk to the plateau for the colorful graffitied rock formations and epic views of Lake Chatuge. Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia at 4,784 elevation, is another must-see overlook in North Georgia.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Graffiti rocks at Bell Mountain.  Photo by Melody Pittman.

You can rent pontoon and ski-boat, kayaks, standup paddleboards, and jet skis from Young Harris Water Sports to spend time on Lake Chatuge, a recreational hotspot. Fishing is supreme in North Georgia, where spotted and hybrid bass are abundant. Don’t be surprised if you catch dozens of fish without really trying.

Sundance Grill (Hiawassee) is perfect for breakfast dishes such as a Gyro Omelet, Breakfast Sandwiches (with double sausage and cheese!), and Stuffed French Toast. For lunch, eat at Mary’s Southern Grill (Young Harris), a southern cooking restaurant with burgers, sandwiches, salads, and 15 choices for a veggie plate. Try the dill potato salad and stewed tomatoes---both absolutely delicious! The Happy Hawg (Hiawassee) is the top-rated Trip Advisor restaurant, serving smoked meats, pulled pork, fried corn-on-the-cob, and hot dogs.

Do some shopping in North Georgia at roadside antique shops (each loaded with treasures and trinkets), C&J Mountain Outfitters, TATA on Main, and Hometown Quilt Studio. One of the best Christmas stores you could imagine is Always Christmas, connected with other nice clothing, home decor, collectibles, and souvenir shops.

WHERE TO STAY IN NORTH GA

The premier place to stay in Young Harris is the Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa. This rustic lodge has a choice of luxurious accommodations (lodge, cottages, spa suite), 18-hole championship golf course, tennis, fishing, hiking trails, spa, and a plethora of amenities. You will be awe once you see the spacious lobby with a massive stone fireplace and scattered seating groups. The lobby affords views of the 503-acres of stunning Blue Ridge Mountain scenery and golf course.

Splash Island at Ridges Resort.  Photo by Melody Pittman.

Kids (and adults, too) will love Splash Island at Ridges Resort, an on-water obstacle course with inflatables, slides, swings, and bouncing platforms. There are river tubing and zip line places around the area, as well.

Cordial Stout or Hop Dang Diggity IPA. Enjoy a glass of wine from Crane Creek Vineyards, with award-winning varietals: Hellbender Red, Seyval Blanc, and Villard Noir Rosé.

Dinner from Sand Bar.  Photo by Melody Pittman.

An excellent place for dinner is the Dining Room at Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris. The Brasstown Meatloaf, a chef’s specialty, is bursting with flavors and covered with mouthwatering mushroom gravy. It comes with two side items, all for $19. Sand Bar (a more relaxed offering) is a sandy beach eatery with lake views, a food truck, live music, corn hole, and kid’s activities. Try the Pimento Cheese Dip with tortilla chips or Boneless Wings, both tasty choices.

Other choices include a Holiday Inn Express, Boundary Waters Resort & Marina in Hiawassee, and several Airbnb or cabin rental properties.

MOUNTAIN TOWN GEMS Brasstown Stables horseback ride.  Photo by Melody Pittman.

Brasstown Stables (Young Harris) offers horseback riding in a charming country setting. Choose between a one or two-hour ride or handled rides for children under seven.

If you’re concerned about traveling with COVID, North Georgia is a seemingly safe place, with plenty of fresh mountain air, room for social distancing, and businesses following suggested measures. The affordability and flexibility of the area only enhance the amazing outdoor attractions and picture-perfect scenery that will be good for your soul. Travel well.
