Summer is coming to a hot & humid close. Charleston in September is a terrific place to enjoy the last weeks of summer. School is back in session and there is a calm, yet fun vibe to the activities this month. Do you enjoy cornhole? The “American Cornhole Organization Charleston Major” take place at the newly renovated Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (the CC&CC) the 13th & 14th. Capitol Market is the venue for two “Let’s Get Cooking” events in the outdoor pavilion. A couple of major country stars will be performing concerts at the CC&CC. LeAnn Rimes and Miranda Lambert will each appear for concerts that are sure to be a hit with fans. LeAnn Rimes’ performance will be accompanied by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. The internationally acclaimed “Mountain Stage” has three concerts scheduled at the Culture Center this month. Afterward, stop by “The Empty Glass” for a bit of an after-party. The musicians stop by, let loose, and jam; making for a once-in-a-lifetime experience every time! Fans of J.Q. Dickinson Salt will be flocking to the 3rd annual BB&T Malden Salt Fest. The whole family will enjoy learning about the area’s rich history while enjoying live music, kid-friendly activities, and food vendors. The events include an old-fashioned parade, cake walks, salt-works tours, a Sunday church service, and self-guided tours through Spring Hill Cemetery. J.Q. Dickinson Salt is garnering

devotees all over the world! The Charleston WV parkrun continues every Saturday morning at 9am on Magic Island. This free and timed run is a great way to challenge yourself and measure improvement each week. It is a wonderful event for families who make fitness and health priorities in their homes. Another opportunity for runners of any fitness level is the Genesis 5K Training Program. Since 2007, Genesis has helped thousands meet their goal of running a 5K. The program is intended for all levels from walkers to experienced runners with the purpose of creating healthy lifestyles through exercise, nutrition, and fellowship. The skilled coaches and encouraging community among the runners are the boost that makes all the difference. ...at the Downtown Charleston Historic District

Within the general boundaries of Washington Street East, Leon Sullivan Way, Kanawha Boulevard, and Summers Street lies the Downtown Charleston Historic District. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, it recognizes architectural landmarks built from 1877 through 1956. Its broad scope of styles includes Italiante, Classical Revival, Renaissance, and Art Deco. This 460-acre area is reflective of the commercial growth that saw the small village of Charleston develop into the commercial capital of the state. The perfect storm of influences precipitated the growth of this area. West Virginians voted in 1877 to move the seat of government permanently from Wheeling to Charleston. Transportation advancements blossomed, including the South Side Bridge being built to connect the southern and northern halves of the valley, and numerous railroads converging in Charleston from all directions. At its peak in 1846, the salt industry produced over three and one-quarter million barrels. The salt industry at the eastern end of the valley had for years been a precursor of rising river traffic for shipping salt by flatboat, lumber mills for building barrels, and mercantiles to serve the influx of workers arriving to work in the salt mines. The valley, particularly the downtown area, became the focal point of religious communities. Sacred Heart on Broad Street (built in 1895-97), First Presbyterian Church (1915), St. John’s Episcopal Church (1883-84), Kanawha United Presbyterian Church on Broad and Virginia streets (1873-1885), Simpson Methodist Church on Shrewsbury Street (1914), and St. Marks United Methodist Chuch (1912) were among the churches anchoring the downtown area. As the seat of government for the state as well as a financial and commercial center, the need for hotels resulted in the construction of the Ruffner Hotel, Kanawha Hotel, and Daniel Boone Hotel among others. Utility companies also constructed buildings in the downtown area. The Charleston Home Telephone Company, the first phone service in town, opened its permanent headquarters at Squires’ new book Looking Back at Charleston is a compilation of 24 essays and color photos from her column and is available on Amazon. 210 Hale Street. Others included the United Fuel and Gas Company headquartered at the corner of Quarrier and Dunbar streets, and Appalachian Power Company headquarters on Virginia Street. Early downtown retail establishments included Palmer’s Shoe Store, O.J. Morrison Department Store, Kanawha Furniture Company, Holz Meat Market, and Kay Jewelry Company. Local banks, defying the odds of the war torn years, dominated the downtown skyline. Kanawha National Bank at 100 Capitol Street (1913-15), Kanawha Banking & Trust Company at 107 Capitol Street (1918), and Kanawha Valley Bank at the corner of Lee and Capitol streets (1928-29) although not still serving as banks, are still beautiful architechtural landmarks. The downtown area is peppered with historical buildings. Some retain their original charm and beauty, while others have fallen prey to ‘upgrading,’ often masking the buildings original design. The best way to appreciate historic buildings is often to simply look up. Many ‘remodeling efforts’ and ‘upgrades’ were done to ground levels floors only, leaving the upper floors untouched. But, even left in their original state, many buildings have decorative features only seen above ground floor level. One of the most identifiable, best loved, and enduring architechtural styles is Art Deco. The downtown area has several buildings that exemplify that classic style: the Atlas Building on Quarrier Street, across the street from the Atlas Building is the Quarrier Diner, and Riverview Terrace on Kanawha Boulevard. The old Stone and Thomas building, although reminiscent of Art Deco is Moderne style, and sadly continues to stand vacant. The multitude of historic buildings in the Downtown Charleston Historic District is best appreciated on foot. Before inclement weather arrives, take a walk and remember to look up.
