As August rolls in, and summer winds down, Charleston doesn’t let up! This month, MultFest, SportsFEST, & Downtown StreetFEST are just a few of the ways to celebrate summer or just enjoy a family “staycation”. On August 21, a total solar eclipse will occur. It was 1918 the last time an eclipse of this type was visible in the U.S! This has been described as the “Great American Eclipse”, since it will be visible in totality only within a band across the entire lower 48 states. It will make its appearance in Charleston at 2:35 that Monday afternoon. This once-in-a-lifetime event will be celebrated in town with a FREE pre-eclipse “Family Fun Day” at the Clay Center on Aug. 19 and also with a “Solar Eclipse Celebration” at Yoga Power during the actual solar event.
Capitol Market hosts two free outdoor cooking classes led by Chef Paul Smith this month. The Market will also be hosting the 9th Annual Beanstringin’. With free admission, you only need to purchase as many green beans as you wish to string and donate to Manna Meal, as they continue to feed the homeless with fresh and healthy meals. Bring a friend, buy some beans, and enjoy the live music and camaraderie! SportsFEST will bring over 800 athletes to Charleston. A variety of venues and locations will have competitions in Pro Watercross, EVP Pro Volleyball, Grappling, 3 on 3 Basketball, Smashyball and more. For alumni and fans of Marshall University’s Thundering Herd, Embassy Suites will be the site for “Paint the Capital City Green” tailgate party as everyone revs up for football season.
Celebrating 28 years of diversity, Multifest continues its multi-cultural event with performances by the Bob Thompson Band, the Martin Luther King Mass Choir, and national recording artist NEXT. Charleston is home to the Contemporary Youth Arts Company, which has brought fresh, original theater to the community since 1995. This month, the play “But Wait, There’s More” makes its debut, certain to delight theater-goers with wit and seriously talented performances by area teens.
As school begins a new year, Charleston ends summer break with a block party during Downtown Streetfest on Capitol Street and the last performance of the summer of “Live on the Levee. That season finale will feature fireworks as we begin celebrating Labor Day weekend.

...at the kanawha river
The sleepy little town of Gauley Bridge is the headwater of the West Virginia’s largest inland waterway. The river ends in Point Pleasant, another small West Virginia river town. Meandering primarily Northwest, the Kanawha River’s starting and ending points are lovely little towns that bookend the river that gave rise to much of West Virginia’s thriving industries. The Kanawha is comprised of the merging of the Gauley and New Rivers. One half mile shy of 100 miles long, the Kanawha River has carried its share of saleable products to ports on the Ohio River and beyond. The river valley boasts a bounty of natural resources as well as other commodities that are shipped on the river. Millions of tons of gas, coal, timber, salt, coke, petroleum, sand, gravel, and chemicals traverse the Kanawha every year. Before the mid-1800s, the river was virtually untouched for hundreds of years. In 1819, the steamboat Robert Thompson traveled up the Kanawha River to ascertain whether it was possible to navigate to Charleston. Upon reaching Red House Shoals, in present-day Putnam County, two days of unproductive attempts to pass the rapids failed and the boat returned downriver to the Ohio. The results were reported to the Virginia Assembly, and in 1820, they made the first appropriation for improvements of the river. In 1820, the Albert Donnally, a vessel built to ship salt, successfully navigated to Charleston. The 1840’s saw the removal of large boulders and dredging in some areas that allowed safe water vessel travel. Between Charleston and Point Pleasant were ten separate rapids that caused numerous wrecks and the loss of cargo and lives. The rapids near Scary Creek and Red House were the most treacherous. They were touted as the direct cause for the Winfield locks to be built. After becoming a state in 1863, the Senate took charge of the Kanawha River. They established a oversight board that carried on the work of improving passage on the river. In 1870, as a result of Congressional action, work began on a series of ten locks and dams constructed along the length of the river, taming the unpredictable river levels. There are three main tributaries to the Kanawha River. The largest is the Elk River, which flows into the Kanawha in downtown Charleston, dividing the east and west side of town. The Coal River joins the Kanawha in St. Albans, or as it was originally known, Coalsmouth. The Pocatalico River downriver from Kanawha County’s Elk and Coal, joins the Kanawha in Poca, in Putnam County. What is in a name? Plenty if you are the Kanawha River. Kanawha is an IroM. quois word meaning ‘water way’ or ‘canoe way.’ At least 34 other names were used at one time or another before becoming the Kanawha River. Among them are Big Connawas River, Big Kanawha River, Canhawa River, Chinodahichetha River, Great Kenhaway River, New River, Pi-queme-ta-mi, and Woods River. The Indian tribes that either settled in the vicinity of the river, or hunted the untamed wilderness on either side of it, contributed nearly all of its names. From Point Pleasant to Winfield there are no food or gas locations for recreational water craft. From Winfield, through Charleston and beyond to Deep Water there are both, which enables moderate pleasure craft activity. Commercial navigation of the Kanawha ceases just above Alloy, and most pleasure craft, other than the smallest of boats do not venture upriver beyond Deep Water. The Norfolk & Western Virginia Railway Bridge marks the end of the safe and easily navigable waters. Anglers drop lines into the Kanawha River at any number of points. Fish congregate below the locks, especially during the summer months. The increased water released raises the oxygen levels created by rapid water movement, attracting fish. Additionally, fish killed while moving through the lock systems are easy pickings for larger fish below the locks. Throughout the years, Charleston has centered many activities around the river. From sternwheel and speed boat races, to ‘Anything That Floats’ and rubber ducky races attract crowds on and beside the water. Concerts held on the levee, fairs and festivals, auto shows, and marathons are held against the backdrop of the beautiful, mighty Kanawha River. Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, and product design in addition to traditional decoration." - Mihai One of the principles I talk about most is BALANCE. While it becomes a summary of many of the other important principles that should be considered in great design, that "It Feels Good" response, tells the story. I am often known to say "If it feels good, we
in small spaces. REPETITION is considered to be the use of the same element throughout to create that feeling of BALANCE. This might be done by using the same style of case goods throughout the space so the traditional senses are at ease. Often you will see the end tables, coffee tables, and even the entertainment / media centers all come from the same collection to create the principle of REPETITION. More often you will see REPETITION successfully created using a common color theme of like textures at different points throughout the space.
Another consideration is most often the FOCAL POINT. This is usually a permanent fixture in the room such as a fireplace but on occasion the FOCAL POINT must be created. The focal point should direct the eye and draw you into the space. You can see easily that the stone fireplace creates the obvious point of interest and the space design ultimately will work with that feature.

TRANSITION is ability to control and create a sense of flow in a space. Stop in the campus’ Lilly Library bike lock is provided and see this internationally known jewel with a fascinating rare book section. Bloomington, Indiana is a fabulous place for a weekend getaway. I missed out not traveling to Indiana when I lived in West Virginia and now I realize just how much I missed. While myself and friends often traveled to Southern and Eastern destinations, a trip to the West of our state was hardly ever considered. A trip to Indiana is a must. BTown will convince you of that. Quite durable, soapstone changes color gradually over time from light grey to a dark grey/green shade. Limestone, another matte finish, is an excellent choice for bathrooms or areas other than kitchen countertops, as it is a softer stone and reactive to acidic solutions. A fan of the worn leather look? Limestone is the natural choice for you. Travertine, ranging from grey to coral-red shades, is in the limestone family.
