Happening Around Town
Fall is the most beloved season of the year. October is one of the most popular months. Niche.com has named Charleston one of the “2017 Best Places to Live in West Virginia”. What’s NOT to love about Charleston in autumn? Sipping cappuccinos al fresco at Taylor Books, enjoying an addictive pumpkin latte at Starbucks, or attending the “Charleston Boulevard Rod Run & Doo Wop”are just a few of the ways to soak in the fall sunshine & breezes off of the Kanawha River, while enjoying a little “sweater weather”. Thousands of car enthusiasts pour into town for the Rod Run & Doo Wop every October. The Doo Wop features classic cars, free concerts, & other outdoor activities. It is always a good time! Speaking of cars & good times, the Good News Mountaineer Garage Ball/ Get Together is an annual fun event that benefits the GNMG. This is an organization that repairs & restores donated automobiles, providing safe & reliable transportation to families working toward economic independence. Another cause worth supporting is the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. Its largest & most important fundraiser of the year, the “Tuxes & Tails” event, is a special evening where hundreds of supportive & involved animal lovers & donors come together at the Charleston Marriott Town Center to celebrate, bid on silent auction items, & support the life-saving mission of KCHA. Later in the month, Charleston continues its tradition of community support w/the 24th annual Dent Dinner fundraiser to benefit the Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center. Jim Dent was a much loved humorist & columnist at the Charleston Gazette for many years & this event is
held in memory of him. This year, internet sensation John Crist, will deliver the best of his viral videos live & in person! FestivALL Fall, from Oct. 20-22, is an unbelievable weekend of 400+ artists, 80+ events, 300+ performances, in 35 venues. For a full description & details of each event, check out the website at festivallcharleston.com. Then, the last week of October offers so many ways to celebrate Halloween. Children can enjoy the activities at Appalachian Power Park & Capitol Market, while adults can come in costume to the East End for the HallowEast Pub Crawl. During Oct. 27 & 28, the West Virginia Book Festival comes to town w/authors’ presentations & readings by such writers as R.L. Stine, who is famous for his “Goosebumps” series & Henry Winkler, who, in addition to being a famous actor, is also an author. There are several other authors joining these two to provide a wonderful weekend of literature & fun for everyone, children included. The event will open on Thursday, the 26th at the WV Culture Center w/the McCreight Lecture in the Humanities being presented by Azar Nafsi. Ms. Nafsi is an Iranian author & professor most famous for writing “Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books”, which remained on the New York Times Bestseller list for 117 weeks after debuting in 2003. The events on Friday & Saturday will be held at the Civic Center. Book lovers will not want to miss out on this! In October, the trees are gorgeous, the weather is perfect for enjoying the outdoors, football is in full swing, & the holiday season is just around the corner. The excitement is just beginning!

Looking Back
By: M. Lynne Squires
...at the Sunrise mansion
October is the month of ghosts and goblins, and things that go bump in the night. Sunrise, lesser known by its true moniker, the MacCorkle Mansion, is rumored to be haunted. The ghost of William A. MacCorkle is said to walk the halls of his former home, seen by both visitors and employees. It is rumored that his ashes are entombed in the base for the statue of his daughter, Isabelle. The statue was placed midway down the Sunrise Carriage Trail that leads from the mansion to the Kanawha River. The statue was said to have cried tears of blood every Halloween at midnight. The statue was removed to prevent vandalism, but the base remains on the trail. William A. MacCorkle was West Virginia’s ninth governor. He left office in 1897, and practiced law in Charleston. He began the construction of Sunrise in 1905 to be his family home. The Georgian stone mansion has a gabled roof with multiple dormers and chimneys. It sits prominently rests on a bluff high above the Kanawha River providing a panoramic view of nearly the entire city of Charleston. The north side, facing the river, is the front of the mansion and features four large columns, excellent representations of Doric, or neo-classic architecture. While the rear, or southern exposure of the home appears at first glance to mirror the north-facing side, there are several differences. The north side’s window placements are symmetrical, while the south side windows are not. The south side is comprised of stones MacCorkle collected while on trips throughout the United States. Each was carefully cut to fit into the house’s façade, and each is engraved to show its origin. M. Lynne Squires’ book Letters to My Son – Reflections of Urban Appalachia at Mid-Century includes memories of The Diamond of her youth. www.mlynne.com
Named after MacCorkle’s childhood home in Rockbridge County, Virginia, the three-story home has 36 rooms, including a paneled great room two stories in height. The room’s predominant feature is an ornate fireplace built with stones MacCorkle personally gathered from cities around the world, including London, Rome, Egypt, China and others. The mansion was designed and built by Ambrose Grayson Higginbotham who also built several prominent homes on Charleston’s East End. After the mansion’s completion, MacCorkle entertained many distinguished visitors there, including Adlai Stevenson, Vice President under President Grover Cleveland; Josephus Daniels, Secretary of War during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson; William Jennings Bryan, prominent political figure; John Philip Sousa, world renowned composer-bandmaster; and “Billy” Sunday, the great evangelist of the day. MacCorkle died at Sunrise in 1930. In 1936, MacCorkle’s heirs sold the mansion, and it was acquired in 1945 by the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army sold the houses and grounds to Sunrise Foundation in 1961, which had been formed for the purpose of purchasing the MacCorkle mansion. The foundation transformed the property into a museum complex. The Kanawha County Board of Education received a grant allowing for the construction of a planetarium boasting a 24 foot dome. It was used as a science classroom for students and curriculum training site for teachers. It was also used to train the WV Air National Guard in celestial science. In 2003, the museum moved to a new, larger exhibition space at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in downtown Charleston. Renamed the Avampato Discovery Museum, the Sunrise name was dropped. It now is home to the law firm of Farmer, Cline, and Campbell. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Next month, Looking Back visits Yeager Airport.

WE’RE READY FOR AMAZON! This year has been an adventure of working on many deals throughout the State of West Virginia. One deal on which we all should be working is the AMAZON Headquarters. From the State Capitol to our Representatives in Washington D.C., we should be rolling out the red carpets for them. I too, will continue sending sites to those whom are making the decisions. I've put a lot of time in traveling the roads looking for that special site for expanding companies and developers. Hopefully, by the time this is put into print, I will have sold the SEARS Auto. We put everything on the table for which they asked. This is the second buyer and offer I have written for this site. Only God knows what they really will do in the end.
On another front, I am courting a couple of buyers for 1840 Murdoch Dr. Parkersburg, WV. It is a 840,000 square foot former St Joseph Hospital, situated on 15.5 acres. It also has great connectivity, fiber throughout the structures, and two POP connections. It would make a great higher education campus, long -term treatment facility, mixed use condo development, or research and development site. We say we need a long-term state of the art opiate drug care facility...this is the answer. I can only imagine the jobs that would be created if the right someone would go ahead an pull the trigger on this project. It will take a person with a vision and a plan to carry out. Closer to home, 408 Leon Sullivan Way Charleston, WV is a property now with an 11% CAP. It has great leases and potential for even a higher CAP Rate. One more property just listed is a 20,000 square foot plus church in Scott Depot, WV which sits on 3.4 acres. I believe the key to growing West Virginia, is to get out there and be competitive in luring more businesses to locate in our State. At the national level, I don't believe we get a fair shake. Even if it's one person at a time, we've got to change the stereotypes of this State and the people. So to that HR Dept. or CEO of ABC Company, I will show that potential new hire more than a home or a parcel of dirt. I will give them a brief experience of living in WV. I will introduce them to folks whom are in the same fields and cultural backgrounds as well. I believe it's important for a stranger that's picking up and moving their family to feel welcomed. I will make them feel welcome and show them that we care. Finally, I would like to thank those of you who have referred folks to me. Please keep them coming. Just remember, with our International Berkshire Hathaway network, I can help anyone find Commercial or Residential anywhere in the world. Thanks again, and have a great day!

“HYGGE”
DESIGN TRENDS CHANGE
as Does the Weather
I recently ran across an article from 2013 that made me stop for a few minutes. I have often said that trends in home design are just like clothing. Wait around long enough and you will see the things come around again. Colors, styles, patterns, and hot space ideas are always a dictator in the “current” home as well. I wanted to share some of the article and my thoughts from 2017!
Here goes…
“Society is changing and its “movements” have collateral effects on all aspects of life as we know it. In developed countries, men are known to spend a lot more time at home than in the past, helping out with children and housework, as a result of the proclaimed men-women equality. In 2013, interior design will thus begin to mirror male preferences like never before.”
As predicted at that time, men have become a much more present part of home life. Working from home is more common than ever and many more are sharing the “stay
at home” duties as well. And when the dominate husband shows greater interest in the home furnishings, the look almost always takes on a more “masculine” look. At the very
the air and appreciations from visitors. And here are 30 incredible garden rooftop ideas for further inspiration.”
least many have replaced that recliner in front of the TV with a man-cave to expand his comfort space. And never forget the importance of Function in today’s world. Furniture is a multi-tasker that can now do almost everything for the male head of household! That and comfort are key!
Green is seen more and more in terms of unique plantings to create and artful and healthy point of view in all situations. Only limited to your creativity!
“Hand sketching and wall writing will be more and more popular this year, as graphic artists will start collaborating with interior designers in creating original wall imprints. Imagine your favorite message elegantly written in the hallway or various letters adorning the ceiling.” DAVE COOPER Space Planning & Interior Design
Dave Cooper 304-539-8592
Cooporris18@outlook.com
While this prediction also took hold and still is often seen today, the peak of the trend has begun to wane. So many new ideas out there that eventually we have to make room for new things by letting go of the old. For example, chalk paint in the last few years has been all the rage! Have you experimented with this technique?
Yes, this one is also a trend forecasted that is still a part of many home environments today. (pic of green space wall) Not only is there a seemingly endless of products and services that can create a “GREEN” home from the time it’s built but for the existing structure there are alternatives that can ensure the best for your outdoor environment.
“If people did not pay much attention in the past to how a furniture object feels when touching its surface, this is probably since functionality used to be the main soughtafter characteristic in a household item. Now things are much different. People are in search for “touchable” textures, which inspire warmth and comfort to engage and experience a proper home atmosphere. Suede and wood are two of the materials which will define the interior design world in 2013. Variety of texture will also be a key factor in arranging spaces.” I love to hand people several fabrics of different colors and textures. You can tell almost immediately by their reaction if touch or sight is most important. It is very true that texture has become much more important in a personal way in all home design. Even the dog bed needs to become a great escape where Fido can relax for his regular nap schedule. And don’t limit texture to fabrics! Rooms that offer a mix of straight and curved lines it’s movement are usually the most comfortable. You will notice family and friends are more at ease in the great room with its soft and more loosely constructed elements. While this area can be very sophisticated in presentation, it will always win over the Formal Living Room. In fact, that is likely one reason we see fewer Formal spaces in homes.

MAKING HOME a better place to live
“Green living will be a key factor in design and architecture this year. From mobile plant panels to framed plant screens with lighting effects, this idea can bring a fresh touch to any apartment or public space. This approach is not only healthy, but also original and elegant. The advantages of having such a green wall? Air cleaning, humidification, evaporation of

Bourbon is a product of the USA, made from 1 corn, and stored in new charred-oak barrels. astly, bourbon is distilled to no higher than 160 proof, while other whiskies must not be greater than 190 proof, a bourbon law.
