Are you Thankful?

I
October 2020
hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving last week here in Canada. Donna and I had a nice Thanksgiving, although we both missed our families, as we know you are all missing your families right now as well because of Covid 19 and really can't travel much. We did have some family with us who live close by, but for the others who live a distance from us, we pray you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. The question I would like to ask everyone out there now is, 'Are You thankful?' And if so, 'What are you thankful for?' Two questions to make you think ... I know when God asked me these questions, it really made me think long and hard about them. We have so much to be thankful for, so let's start with the first question, 'Are you Thankful?' We need to be thankful for everything in life; we also need to be thankful always to God. We can be thankful for little things or big
things, it just doesn't matter as long as we are thankful in all situations. Philippians 4:6-7 says, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplications, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Thankfulness is so important for everyone, but more so for us Christians. To sum it up in a nutshell, it's really acknowledging all the good things that are either happening to you now or that has happened to you. When we read the Bible, we see that thankfulness is telling us who God is and what He has done for us. Here are a few examples of thankfulness in the Bible: 1: David gives thanks to God for his kingdom: Before David was king of Israel, he was being chased as a wanted man. King Saul at the time was threatened by David and his popularity with the people. 1 Samuel 29:5: "Is this not David, of whom they sang to one another in dances, saying: 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands?'" and they relentlessly pursued David as he fled for his safety. Eventually King Saul was killed in battle with the Philistines and God made
David the King of Israel. After Saul's death, David then sings a song to God, praising Him in 2 Samuel 22:49: "He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man." 2: David gives thanks to God for his wealth: David wanted to build a magnificent temple to honour God, but God told him that it would be his son, Solomon, who would build the temple, as David had too much blood on his hands. 1 Chronicles 28:3: "But God said to me, 'You shall not build a house for My name, because you have been a man of war and have shed blood.'" But God did allow David to design the temple, and he did just before he died. David then made plans for the great temple in Jerusalem. Those plans were for a large fundraiser, a campaign to collect lots of gold, silver, jewels and tons of supplies for building the temple. David was overwhelmed with the response of the people's generosity, so much so that he gave thanks to God in 1 Chronicles 29:12-13: "Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, We thank You And praise Your

glorious name." After David's death, his son, Solomon, became king of Israel and he had the honor of building the temple to God in Jerusalem. It's an amazing building that is called Solomon's Temple. 1 Chronicles 22:9-10: "Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies all around. His name shall be Solomon, for I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days. He shall build a house for My name, and he shall be My son, and I will be his Father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever." It took seven years to build the Temple. 3: Thanking God for His Salvation for us: In Psalm 118, it calls all people to give thanks to the Lord. They are so thankful for God who delivered them from eternal death. God takes away eternal death as punishment of our sin and He replaces it with His loving kindness and compassion. Psalm 118:21: "I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation." 4: Daniel gives thanks to God for wisdom: There are few people like Daniel in the Bible. Daniel and his three friends were captured in Jerusalem and taken far

away to Babylon by king Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel sets his mind to being totally faithful to God, while trying to seek peace in the city where he now lives. Jeremiah 28:7: "And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace." In chapter 2 of the book of Daniel, we read that king Nebuchadnezzar has a bad dream that troubles him. He demands that all the magicians and wise men of Babylon explain the dream to him but no one is able to, except for Daniel. He understands that all his wisdom has been given to him by God. Daniel 2:23: "I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers; You have given me wisdom and might, And have now made known to me what we asked of You, For You have made known to us the king's demand." Daniel is not only given wisdom from God, but because of the wisdom, he is given great influence as well. He was given this from king Nebuchadnezzar for interpreting his dream. Daniel is now made ruler of all the Babylon wise men. Daniel 2:48: "Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise

men of Babylon." 5: The healed leper came back to thank Jesus: Back in the Bible times, leprosy was a terrible and serious disease. A leper in those days had to live outside the community, as they were considered "unclean." When Jesus was travelling to Jerusalem, He walked along the border of Samaria and Galilee. There He met ten men with leprosy, They immediately asked Jesus to have mercy on them. Then Jesus healed all ten lepers and sent them on their way and to show themselves to the priest. When they left they were cleansed. Only one of the ten men who were healed came back to praise God and give thanks to Him for healing him of his disease. The amazing part of this is that the man who came back to praise God was a Samaritan, and the Jewish and the Samaritans did not like each other. Most Jews would not travel through Samaria; they would take the long way just to avoid Samaria. Luke 17:11-17: "Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" So

when He saw them, He said to them, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks, And he was a Samaritan. So Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?" 6: Jesus gives thanks before meals: Jesus then gives thanks before feeding both multitudes of people that came to hear Him speak. Jesus had His disciples gather what food they had and brought it to Him, they had five loaves of bread and two fish, so Jesus took them and looked up to heaven and gave thanks to the Father and with that they had enough food to feed the multitudes which numbered 5,000 and another time it numbered 4,000. Now, we have to realize that both times were a lot more people than the 5,000 and 4,000 they fed, because in those days, they only counted the men. So now, you had the women and children who more than doubled those numbers. Matthew 15:36-37: "And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples

gave to the multitude. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left." Jesus also gave thanks at the Last Supper when He broke the bread and gave it to His disciples and told them to eat it as this is His body and the wine as this is His blood of the New Covenant, and they drank it. Luke 22:14-20: "When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you." 7: Jesus gives thanks by demonstrating His authority: When Jesus' friend, Lazarus, died, He went back to raise him from the dead so the
people there would see that He has the authority to bring the dead back to life, because He is the resurrection of life. Just before He brings Lazarus back to life, Jesus thanks God for hearing Him so that all of the people there would know that God had sent Him to do His work on earth. John 11:4145: "Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying, And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me." Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let him go."Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him." 8: Paul gives thanks to God for the bread and his safety: When Paul told the guard they should not head out to sea, they did not listen to him and set sail anyway. When they ran into a terrible storm, the ship was about to be wrecked against the rocks. Paul then assures everyone on the ship that no one would perish in the

shipwreck that was about to happen. Paul then encouraged everyone to eat a meal, for they had not eaten in quite awhile, and by this they would have enough energy to swim to shore. Before Paul broke the bread, he gave thanks to God in front of all people on the ship, then they ate. Acts 27:35: "And when he had said these things, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all; and when he had broken it he began to eat." So now the next question is, What are you thankful for? One thing is my wife, Donna, who is amazing to me. For instance, I recently had a few teeth pulled, so I couldn't eat or drink a lot of the things I enjoy. So she decided to eat and drink only the things that I could. This was huge to me; it showed me the love she has for me and I'm so thankful for her love and that God brought her to me. I'm also so thankful for all that God has done for me and for His love. Another thing I'm thankful for is Thanksgiving, even though it has been hard for me over the last few years after I lost my son. I'm not thankful for losing him, but thankful that God always turns something really bad into something really good. In this case, I wasn't a Christian at the time, but after Curtis passed away, it eventually

lead me to Jesus and that I'm very thankful for. Let's look at some things that we should be thankful for and how to give thanks to God for them, such as: Having a roof over our heads. Let's say to God, 'Thank You for our house; thank You for a roof over our heads, some place to sleep and live. Thank you for the food in the house, where we are not hungry but have lots of energy to do things. Thank you for the vehicle that gets us where we need to go, such as grocery stores and other places, for the gas in the vehicle so we can travel. Thank you for the health of our children, family members and friends so that they're all safe and healthy in this world today. Thank you for our animals, for their health and happiness and that we can enjoy our time with them.' We should also be thankful for the weather; it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, whether it's the weather we like or dislike. For instance, I like the warm weather, spring, summer, even most of the fall, like today, nice and warm. I'm not a great lover of winter; but we should still be thankful, I'm thankful for every day that God has created. Psalm 118:24 says, "This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it." When we do this and thank
Page 7
God for the day, we show Him our humility, that we trust Him in the day that we are in. We never want to grumble, moan or complain, because this is the opposite of what God wants from us. This shows pride and arrogance. So let's be thankful in these opportunities and humble ourselves before God. Philippians 2:14 says, "Do all things without complaining and disputing." So let's not forget to live for God and let's give Him all the thanks and glory, that He deserves, everyday. God Bless.

You Can Overcome Bullying...
Book by: Nick Vujicic Written by: Lynne Wood
S
tand Strong is a wonderfully written, informative book for anyone who has or is experiencing bullying in their lives. Nick Vujicic is an Australian American who is a world renowned speaker, author, evangelist and an anti bullying advocate. Nick speaks to millions of students around the world on this subject. Nick was born without arms or legs but he felt he was blessed in many ways. He has a very loving family who encouraged and helped him, but once he left the protection of home to enter school, everything changed. It was like he had a bull's eye painted on him; he felt constantly picked on. Nick thought about suicide at eight years of age. It's terrible when a person would even be driven to consider such a waste of life, especially a child. At a low point in his life at ten years of age, he did attempt suicide but the thought of what his family would go through stopped him. He tells people if he had given into the bullying and
went ahead with the suicide, he would have missed out on all the wonderful things that God had planned for his life. He's now married to a lovely lady, has four amazing children, a great career, a loving family and friends. When you're being bullied, don't give up and don't let their words and actions define who you are. It isn't about anything
you've done or said, or the way you look or speak, that causes a bully to pick on you. You can't stop people from saying hurtful things, but you do have a choice on how you respond and how you live your life. Bullies have their own issues; they pick on someone like you to make themselves feel better. Don't let them define who you are; instead, focus on your strengths, who you are as a person. You are a child of God. God created you. He loves you and He has an amazing plan for your life. Trust Him. This book has a lot of great stories and will help you develop a "bully defence system," so you can handle bullies by building your strength from the inside out. The bullies in Nick's life didn't try to make him stronger, but they did and Nick's hope is that your bullies will make you stronger too. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13.
"But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one." 2 Thessalonians 3:3

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Why should we fear God?
cclesiastes 12:13-14: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.” God is love. 1 John 4:18 tells us that: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” Over and over in the Bible we are exhorted to fear God, to have the fear of the Lord, to live in godly fear. But why should we fear God? If God loves us, why should we fear Him? If we don’t fear God, we will not take sin seriously enough. The consequences of sin are enormous. Jesus Christ warned us to fear God, not men—and he confirmed that in everything about his life and death. He spoke lovingly but frankly when people needed to face their sin and repent. In God’s righteousness, even when we have been forgiven for our sins, we still have to reap the results of having committed sin. Galatians 6:7-8 says: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to
the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” Psalm 130:3-4 reads: “If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, Oh Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared.” Fearing God is to fear to act against His will. When we weigh our words and actions on the scales of godly fear, then we gain wisdom and understanding and virtue, because then we learn and do God’s will. A lack of godly fear
leads to us doing our own will. This disregard for God does not lead to any kind of spiritual growth. We ought to fear to cause Him sorrow or grief, knowing how incredibly wretched sin is, how much God hates it, and how much it hurts Him when we sin. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 says: “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord
and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” To fear God is to have an absolute reverence and awe for Him, the Creator of all things. In the Bible, we get a few glimpses into heaven, and we see the heavenly creatures worship Him around His throne continually, crying out “Holy, holy, holy!” and covering their faces. Psalm 89:7 says: “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.” Hebrews 12:2829 states: "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.” Almighty God has called us by name to serve Him, and He is working in us so that we can be saved to be with Him for eternity. This causes an inexpressible love and gratitude and reverence to grow and increase in our hearts. Paul says to work toward complete holiness because we fear God (2 Corinthians 7:1). We develop a deep personal love relationship with God when we fear Him. To fear God is to love Him with all our heart, all our soul, and all our strength, and to keep His commandments. Deuteronomy 6:4-5 says: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God,

the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 10:12-13 states: “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” Also, we learn in Matthew 22:36-38: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’” Jesus demonstrated His love when He lived out His words in John 15:13: "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.” We need to act with love and goodness to our fellow man as well. If we fear God, we are more likely to keep our word and treat others with kindness. God is full of grace and longsuffering for us, and that Jesus died for our salvation, so that our sins are forgiven when we repent of them. Hebrews 12:28 says,
Page 11
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.” So how does fear of God, who is perfect love, take away fear? As you walk with the Lord, realize that God poses a threat to your ego, but not to you. He rescues you from your delusions, so that He may reveal the truth that sets you free. He casts you down, only to lift you up again. He sits in judgment of your sin, but forgives you anyway. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but love from the Lord is its completion. With a love like that, what else is there to fear but God?

Al Oliver was an excellent Major League ball player; he had a great career. Al, in 1969, was named to the All Rookie Team. He played Major L e a g u e Baseball as an outfielder and first basemen from 1968 through 1985 season, most notably as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five National League Eastern Division titles in six years between 1970 and 1975 and he went on to win the World Series in 1971 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also won the 1982 batting champion, as well as the RBI champion as a member of the Montreal Expos. He was also a three-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Al Oliver enjoyed playing in Montreal; he had really good numbers his first year but his second and last season dwindled because of an injury he suffered. Al Oliver He said no matter how he played Montreal that second season, the fans were Expos 1982 - 1983 great to him; they never booed
him. Al's numbers shows off his amazing talents on the baseball field. Al was the first ball player at that time to hit a .300 batting average with 200 hits. He also had 100 RBI's (Runs Batted In) in both National and American Leagues. Al batted .300 or more in an amazing nine straight seasons and eleven times total. Al was also a seven-time All Star; he compiled 2,743 career hits. This was the second most of any player who isn't in the Hall of Fame. Al has a lifetime batting average of .303 and 1,326 RBI's. Although Al Oliver isn't in the Hall of Fame as of yet, with these numbers, he could very well be in there soon. Al Oliver was a talented ball player, but he is even a better motivational speaker. Al isn't afraid of speaking about the way this world is going ... morally falling apart at the seams. Al speaks out on several issues such as the violence that is occurring in our schools today and on the role parents should have on their children, on how to be positive role models for them in the home life. Al was then given an honour by speaking at the funeral and giving the eulogy of his close friend and former teammate, Willie Stargell. Because of this, the President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Dale Pelrosky, asked Al if he would convey the invocation at the 2001 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, which was a great honour for Al. Al became a strong Christian with spiritual values because of the amazing community he had at his church. On Mother's Day, 1997, Al was ordained a deacon of his church, like his father and grand father was. One Hit From Home “Faith Changes the Game
he movie, One Hit From Home, just happens to be about baseball; after all it is October...World Series time, and although with Covid 19, it's different, but never the less, they are playing the Fall Classic now. This movie, released in 2012, is about a promising ball player named Jimmy Easton, who had his career end early due to a knee injury. When Jimmy comes back home to Phoenix, Arizona, he gets into a bar fight with a man who insulted him. It seems like Jimmy is off to prison but his uncle, who is a sports director at a local college, gives Jimmy an ultimatum to either do community service as a baseball coach on a losing team,
or go to jail. The team only has one talented player named Brandon Elliot, whose dad is verbally abusive to him when he doesn't play well. As we learn later in the movie, Jimmy Easton's drinking problems started after the death of his parents, who died in a car accident. He blamed himself because he was supposed to be with them, but changed his mind after being drafted. After leaving town to play professional baseball, he left everyone behind and didn't return till after his knee injury. At first, Jimmy didn't care about coaching. Even though he was there, he really wasn't. Awhile after he started to change. He could tell Brandon had a hole in his swing and began to work with him and change his game. The team started to feed off of Jimmy's coaching and began winning games, a lot of games, and went to the championships. One day, Jimmy noticed he could run again, so he told his agent and a team became interested in him again, but he decided at that time to stay and coach. Brandon's dad decided to change his ways
and repented of his abuse and asked Brandon to forgive him. Brandon does and they develop a good relationship. Then tragedy strikes again; Brandon and his dad were in a car accident in which Brandon's dad passes away. Brandon becomes so confused that he doesn't want to play baseball. Does Brandon come back to play and help his team win? Or is Brandon so confused he just can't think of playing baseball at this time in his life? One Hit From Home is a sports movie that is enjoyable to watch. This movie has good acting; it has triumphs on and off the field, and touches on coming to terms with how to deal with loss and one's grief.
