Discouragement!
Owner/Publisher: Rob Wood
T
his is a word that no one wants to think about or feel, although it happens to us all every once in awhile, even Christians... the word is Discouragement. This word manifests itself in many different forms: a broken relationship, a layoff, a vehicle you wanted but could not get, or even trying to start a business...all of these I have gone through and I'm sure you have as well. When this happens to us, what do we do? Where do we turn? Who do we ask for advice? Before we answer these questions, let's look at what causes us to become discouraged. Discouragement is one of the biggest tools the enemy will use on us to try to defeat us. If we don't recognize what is going on within us and around us, he will make us feel unworthy; he will make us feel hopeless and he will try to steal our joy. He will set the stage and try to get in our heads and do damage. Once he is set up, he will bring other
things that will be even worse, such as doubt, depression, anxiety, loneliness and even anger. 1 Peter 5:7-8 says, "... casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." We must never take discouragement lightly; we should always strengthen our minds through Christ Jesus. Sometimes we need a loving hand to help us through and other times we need someone to be tough with us in a loving way. Either way, we need to stand up and fight our way through it because discouragement is a sin that we need to deal with. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." When we do not seek help in turning to Jesus Christ, we risk falling deeper into discouragement and other troubles, which will become very costly to us. If we let it in our lives, it will leave us with a feeling of hopelessness and totally defeat; it will take all of our energy from our bodies and spirit. It will keep us from

doing what God wants us to do for Him, because it takes our vision away. Because we just don't want to face anything that comes up before us, we would rather just stay in bed or sit on the couch feeling sorry for ourselves. When we get like this, discouragement starts to weaken our faith and becomes contagious to us and others around us, family or friends and it will weaken them and their faith as well. Often when we get discouraged, we tend to want to be comforted by others, but the comforts we look for are the ones that avoid our discouragements. Instead, we need to rally our courage, face our discouragement and overcome them. When we decide to avoid them, discouragement becomes a huge problem, such as sin giving way to unbelief, and that will be no different than giving way to lust, anger or other sins. Jesus does not want us to be sad or discouraged. After all, He wants us to be happy, to be full of joy and peace; He commands us not to be discouraged. Jesus tells this to His disciples right after the last supper, before what would be one of the most discouraging nights of the disciples lives, when Jesus is arrested, accused and is led to

the cross to be crucified. John 14:1 says, "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me." Let's look at Jesus' words in John 14:1, "Let Not." We see that these are not just comforting words; they are commands. Jesus knew that the disciples were going to be tempted to fear what was going to happen next. Things were going to look really bad; everything they knew was going to crumble down all around them. So what were the disciples suppose to feel and do? They were to Believe! They were to believe in God, and Jesus. What Jesus is saying to them is, "Don't let your hearts be troubled by the things that you see. Let your hearts be filled with what I have promised you." Basically, that is what He is telling you and me. What is tempting you into discouragement right now? Do you find it hard to believe that God really can make things right in your life, or whether He can turn things around again? God can take all those bad things that happen in your life and He can turn them into good as Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." But the thing is, Romans 8:28 says that He
Discouragement!
will turn the bad things into good for those of us that love God. If we don't know God, and don't love or even follow Him, how can we even think that He will help? We need to have a personal relationship with Him; then He will hear us and work things for us. As 1 John 5:14-15 says: "Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him." Christians can have confidence in knowing that our God always hears and answers our prayers. I will touch more on this in the new year when I write on prayers. When we think about it, discouragement is doing more harm than good; it is actually choking the faith right out of us. Let's not just sit back and be depressed, sitting in our chairs watching TV, drinking and eating our favorite junk or comfort foods. We need to stand up and clear the obstruction from us; clear the path of discouragement from our lives and we need to fight to keep our faith strong, to be encouraged, not discouraged. Let's get out there and get encouraged with that kind of amazing faith-fueled courage that truly builds us back up and keeps us strong. It's better
Page 5
to get rid of those diversions in life and look towards God and start believing in all of His promises that are in Scriptures. God gave us the Bible so that we could look up the Scriptures and by doing so, this will help us to be encouraged, and from there we might have hope. The book of Romans has a few scriptures that will encourage you in your walk with God. Romans 15:4 says, "For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience of comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." Another good one is Romans 8:35-37: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." So don't let your hearts be ruled by all the things that you see. Let your hearts be ruled by all the things that Jesus promises you. Jesus clearly tells us that we will always have peace through Him. He will give us a peace in our hearts, it's a peace that cannot be given by the world. Peace from the world is like a peace

that you have for a very short time. In a fleeting moment, it is gone again. When Jesus gives you peace, it's a peace that resonates in your heart. It's a peace that will lift you up and will help you through anything. This is because Jesus has overcome the world. John 16:33 says, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." What we need to do to overcome discouragement is to turn to God. When we go through things in our lives, what is the one constant thing we do? We go to a family member or a close friend and we talk to them about what is bothering us, or who and how they hurt us. But we do have one friend that is so close to us, one that is closer than a brother. He is so merciful and His mercies are new every morning, and one whose love endures forever. That one true and only friend is Jesus, when we get discouraged and we need hope to lift our spirits back up, He can. Isaiah 40:2931 says, "He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on

the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint." You see, when we truly love people, we want to talk about what is in their hearts, minds or thoughts, to bring all the hurt, pain or fustrations that they're feeling to the surface, and by talking, it helps them to deal with their problems. This is how God is; our Father in heaven is so much like this. He truly loves and cares about us and for everything that has happened in our day. He wants us always to run to Him, to tell Him all that is on our hearts. 1 Peter 5:6-7 says, "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." So go to Him and tell Him everything. We need to remember, when discouragement comes back as it does from time to time, turn to God. Remember how great God is, that He may not take you out of your storm, but He will help you through the storm. At that time, we will praise Him as the storm rages, not because we are thankful for the storm in our lives, but because we are thankful for God who will take our hand and help us through. So just be still and listen for that still
soft voice. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" When you hear a voice telling you which way to turn, listen to it, for it is God directing you in the area He wants you to go. Isaiah 30:21 says, "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left." I pray you listen to His voice to guide you. Focus on Him, for this will keep you from discouragement, and by doing so, God will bless you today and every day.

Too often, we get lost in the contents of our thoughts; Feeling worthless and insecure can overcome our hearts. These falsehoods make us believe that life's a slippery slope; Stripping us of experiencing true joy, peace and hope. Loneliness leads to feeling unloved and misunderstood; A fear of being disconnected from the outside world. We look around for acceptance; all but in the right place; Continually struggling as if we can earn some saving Grace. Our Heavenly Father knows and hears our pleading cries; He is all-knowing, ever-loving, omnipotent and wise. He understands our yearning to be connected to the One Who loved us so very much that He gave His only Son. He sent the Holy Spirit to teach what we need to know; To show us how to love like Him and help us begin to grow; To fill us with truth and strength so we can live our lives In such a way that we will become committed followers of Christ.

The Last Hour
November 2020
A Look at the End Times...
Book by: Amir Tsarfati Written by: Lynne Wood
T
he Last Hour is a well written, excellent book by Amir Tsarfati, an Israeli Christian who gives a different view into the end times. He explains that Bible prophecy is not a secret; it is a mystery to be found in scripture and he explains it wonderfully. The Last Hour is based on truth from biblical scripture about God's plan for what has already happened and what is to come. He talks about the rapture, the antichrist and the great tribulation. This book comes highly recommended by Dr. David Jeremiah and Ann Graham Lotz as a definite must-read in biblical prophecy. Amir served in the military, as is mandatory in Israel, and he continues as a Major in the Israel Defence Forces. He is a well respected Bible teacher and is also CEO of Sar EL Tours. Amir was the chief tour guide in Israel for twenty years. Dr. David Jeremiah first met Amir on one of those tours over twenty years ago; they have been friends ever
since. The first chapter is all about Amir's life and how he became a Christian. Amir lives with his wife and four children in Israel. His home overlooks the valley of Megiddo, which the Bible calls Armageddon, where the final battle will take place. Could
you, just for a moment, imagine looking over that valley every day, knowing what will happen there one day? As Amir sits on his porch, he has no fear that, when that final battle takes place, he will be safe with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I always enjoy reading a book on prophecy when it's taken from scripture by a person with biblical knowledge like Amir. The Last Hour was not written to scare you, but to open your eyes to the truth of what is to take place. Don't be afraid to pick up this book and read it; it's meant to give you peace and hope as a believer, knowing what your future holds as it unfolds before you. "Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." 1 Corinthians 15:51-52
"But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only."

salm 13:1-4: “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long will my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O Lord my God; enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him”; lest those who trouble me rejoice when I am moved.” Sometimes, life can no longer seem worth the fight. Reading this psalm, we detect some discouragement in David. The psalmist feels down and out. David’s struggle with despondency grew very intense. He was becoming weary because of the length of the test. We can’t be certain of the issue plaguing the poet-king. We do know, however, that some of David’s darkest days came before he was officially promoted to the throne of Israel. God was preparing him for an immense task and He used the trials to shape him into a man of maturity and inner strength. Maybe the circumstances that David faced led him to write this song. He had just slain Goliath of Gath. The Philistines were a defeated foe of Israel and David had become

Be Encouraged! the most famous hero in the land. The people sang his praises, which fueled King Saul’s jealousy. As a result, Saul became focused on murdering David. Though innocent before God and loyal to King Saul, David literally ran for his life and lived as an escaped fugitive in the hills of Judea for more than a dozen years. Hunted and haunted by Saul, David must have entertained doubts at times. He often had no one but the Lord to
turn to in his despondent moments. There he was, the anointed kingelect, existing like a beast in the wilderness, running for his life. Do you remember the last time you felt abandoned? David was overwhelmed by his life trials; he was feeling emotionally crushed and wondered if God had forgotten him. David resorted to handling discouragement on his own. He had begun to plan a way. Sometimes when we’re discouraged, it seems as if God doesn’t care about us. We figure that we’re going to have to work
things out for ourselves. This is doubting God’s promises, suggesting He is not trustworthy. Solomon writes in Proverbs: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) “Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3) “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” (Proverbs 16:7) What happens when we try to work things out in our own flesh? Exactly what happened to David: Our companions become sorrow, frustration and worry. We need to learn to leave our burdens with the Lord and let Him work out the details. It is also important for us to remember that God not only designs the depth of our trials, but also their length. God wishes to teach us wonderful lessons in the midst of our grief and sorrow. If we can turn our eyes towards Him, and ask the Lord to enlighten our eyes, our countenance will once again regain its shine. When trials are dealt with in the flesh, our faces, especially our eyes, become hard, flat, and dull. The eyes bear the marks of rigidness and inflexibility, lacking the sparkle and the light that once

manifested itself from our hearts. When our inner joy leaves, so does the shine from our eyes. Release the enemy to the Lord and let Him take care of the results. A change in David occurred when he decided to lay it all out before God in prayer. God’s grace will keep us going, and His grace gives us hope. By waiting, we learn patience; it gives us strength and it builds our faith. “I have trusted! … My heart shall rejoice! … I will sing!” Reading Psalm 13:5-6, David’s circumstances had not changed; Saul still hunted him; David’s outward circumstances had not changed, yet David had changed.

Psalm 13:1-4 God had “dealt bountifully” with him. So, what does this mean for us? It means that we must recognize that God uses trials to transform us, not our surroundings. God wishes to train us, to mold us. He uses the distressing circumstances brought on by evil to benefit us, rather than destroy us. The evils intended by the world become His tools. In doing so, He deals bountifully with us … deep within where no one else can see or touch. The apostle Paul came to realize from his “thorn in the flesh” as he wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9. Weakness is not a symptom of a terminal disease; it is proof of our humanity. It is the platform
Page 11
upon which God does some of His most magnificent work. It all comes down to God’s perfect timing and our need for the fruits of the Spirit, especially patience, faith and self-control. Without the Holy Spirit working in our lives and developing these characteristics within us, we will struggle. If the daily grind of discouragement gets a hold of you and drags you under, be encouraged with this beautiful psalm of hope. It will not only become a comfort to your soul, it will lift you off your face, put you back on your feet, and you will be rejoicing and singing to the Lord.

Dan Bouchard Finding Jesus while in Atlanta D
aniel Hector "Bouch" Bouchard was born on December 12, 1950 in Val-d'Or, Quebec. As a member of the Sorel Black Hawks, Dan and his team went to the Memorial Cup in 1969, where he won 14 of 19 games. He then went on to play for the London Knights of the OHA (Ontario Hockey Association). In 1970, Dan was drafted by the Boston Bruins. For the next two years, he played in the AHL (American Hockey League) for the Bruins' farm team, the Boston Braves, where Dan was an AHL first Team All Star. He also played one game in the CHL (Central Hockey League) with Oklahoma City Blazers. Dan made his NHL (National Hockey League) debut in 1972-1973 season for the Atlanta Flames, as Dan was selected during the 1972 expansion draft. After he played for Atlanta for eight seasons, the Flames moved to Calgary during the summer of 1980. As the 1980-1981 season was halfway through, Dan asked for a trade, as he wasn't happy in Calgary. When he asked for a trade, they told him no one wanted him, so when he asked if he could make some calls, they said he could. A few calls to Quebec and Dan had a trade waiting; all he needed was Calgary to agree, which they did. Calgary sent Dan to the Quebec Nordiques for Jamie Hislop. Dan was the last original Atlanta Flames player with the
team. Dan then led the Nordiques to their first playoff games since joining the NHL in 1979 from the WHA (World Hockey Association) merger. In Quebec, Dan enjoyed more wins with a talented team in front of him. This only improved the battle of Quebec, between the Quebec Nordiques and the Montreal Canadiens. Dan was there to stop most of their shots and beat Montreal in the first round. They also knocked out the Boston Bruins for an exciting playoff run. But Dan and the Nordiques were eliminated by the Wales Conference finals by the defending champions, New York Islanders, who won their third of four straight Stanley Cups that year. During the 1985-1986 season, Dan was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. Dan, that same year, lost to the Calgary Flames in the first round of the playoffs, which ended his NHL career. He then went on to play a season in Switzerland for HC Fribourg Gotteron in 19861987 season, but after only three weeks, Dan suffered a serious knee injury. that ended his hockey career and made him hang up his skates and pads. He then took the Goaltender coaching job with the Quebec Nordiques. Dan gives credit for his long career, which was 14 seasons, to the advice given by NHL legend, Frank Mahovlich, also known as the "Big M." In Dan's first NHL start, the Big M scored on a slap shot on the rookie goalie. While he skated past, he said, "One of many, kid, one of many!" Thanks to the

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for this day that You have given us and for the blessings You have bestowed on us. Thank You for Your guidance and protection. You know our every thought and fear; we need You, Lord, to take control of our lives and to help us to think clearly when we are frustrated, overwhelmed, tired and confused. Help us to take our focus off ourselves and keep our eyes firmly planted on You. Help us to know You have not forgotten us; nor have You forsaken us. Give us courage to take one step at a time. We give You all the honor and the glory for carrying us through and to use this situation as a testimony. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray,

Chase Elliott Third youngest NASCAR Champion... N ASCAR driver William Clyde "Chase" Elliott II was born on November 15, 1995 in Dawsonville, Georgia. On November 15, 2020, he became the third youngest driver in the history of NASCAR to ever win the NASCAR Cup Series Championship.Chase's first ever Cup Championship, joining his Hall of Fame father, Bill Elliott. One scripture that Chase likes is Hebrews 12:1. It says, "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." Chase was 24 years, 11 months old when he became the third youngest driver to win in the Cup Series Championship. The second youngest was Jeff Gordon, as he was 24 years and three months old in 1995. The youngest driver to ever win a Cup Series Championship was Bill Rexford, at 23 years old. Chase held off other drivers... Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano in the final race of the season which was at the Phoenix, Arizona racetrack
for the first time. Denny Hamlin, who is one of Joe Gibbs' drivers, was also racing for his first Cup Series Championship. Brad and teammate, Joey, were driving for Team Penske; they were looking for their second Championship. Chase Elliott's win is amazing considering he had to fight through the cars ahead of him, because of problems he had with the pre race inspections. Once Chase was out on the track racing, he quickly moved up. He was in third place by the end of stage 1. Then he had moved up into second place at the end of stage 2. By the time of the third and final stage, he was leading the race. Chase led the race for a strong 153 laps, which includes the final 43 laps after he passed Joey Logano on the 270 of 312 laps. Chase's difference in the win was 2.740 seconds over Joey's teammate Brad Keselowski. Chase has become the fourth driver to win a racing championship for Rick Hendrick. His victory on Sunday, November 15th, gives Hendrick Motorsports its 13th championship and their first since 2016, when his teammate, Jimmy Johnson, won his last of his seven championships, all with Hendrick Motorsports, tieing him with Hall of Fame drivers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Rick Hendrick's other championships came from four-time champion Jeff Gordon, who raced his whole career with the organization, and then in 1996

Terry Labonte won a championship for the team. Chase started the playoff series with two wins; then he moved through the playoffs with wins in round of 12 and round of 8 finals. Chase also continued in his dominance of the road course racing. He stretched his winning streak to four with victories at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course (a new race added after Co-Vid 19 shutdown) and at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Chase's other win was a career first and the second one at Martinsville Speedway in the season's second last race. Chase's Sunday victory brings back the championship to Dawsonville, Georgia, where Chase's father, Bill Elliott's own

Cup Series Championship was celebrated by the town in 1988. The Pool Room happens to be a place that the Elliott's and other Peach State racing legends go to for a friendly game of pool and to watch and cheer on Bill Elliott's victories by using a siren. The Pool Room owner changed those victory screams for Chase Elliott as he moves on through NASCAR. Like Bill Elliot, Chase brought the No. 9 car to a championship. They're the third father-son pair to win a Cup Series Championship. They followed Lee and Richard Petty and Ned and Dale Jarrett; all of them are NASCAR Hall of Fame drivers. Chase started his career at a young age of 13, but he still kept up his grades. It was harder for

him as a teenager, but he found a way to balance his schoolwork and his racing career. He missed some classes, but he did succeed. In 2014, Chase enrolled in Kings Ridge Christian School, although he didn't give another thought about going to college because he was totally committed to his racing career at that point. Chase's mom is a former photographer with both Illustrated and Scene. She is the Elliott's family manager and social media director. Chase also has two sisters, Lauren Star and Britanny. Chase likes the scripture, 2 Corinthians 5:17, which says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new."

Faith of our Fathers “A Journey of Brotherhood
he movie, Faith of our Fathers, is appropriate since this is a month on remembrance. Faith of our Fathers is a movie about two sons who are both trying to find out about their fathers. They were both friends and they were killed together in battle in Vietnam. It's a gripping movie with a powerful evangelistic message, which is centered on Jesus. The movie starts in 1997 when John Paul finds a box that belonged to his father that was filled with Vietnam war memorabilia, when his mother passed away. As he continues to look in the box, he finds a name of another soldier; as well as a photograph of his
father and the other soldier. John Paul then tracks down the name and finds his son whose name is Wayne, who lives in Alabama. Wayne then promises to allow John Paul to read his father's letters from Vietnam. But John Paul can only look at the letters as long as he gives Wayne money and travels along with him to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. The long journey has its fair share of problems for the both of them. As John Paul begins to read each of the letters, he realizes the strong bond both of their fathers had for one another. The movie shifts from present day with John Paul and Wayne to Vietnam showing their fathers struggles with war and their building of faith. A great part of Faith of our Fathers is the strong focus on Jesus. Eventually, all the letters from Wayne's father and the letters from John Paul's father gives both men just the answers they have been looking for, and the answer was Jesus. Both fathers tell both of their sons (John Paul and Wayne) that God loves them both very deeply, and that they both would gladly give their lives for both
of them, just as Jesus died for us all because He loves us deeply, more than any human could. John Paul and Wayne learned that Jesus showed His love for them both when He died on the cross, and also learned how their fathers died for their brothers in arms when they gave their lives for their country. Faith of our Fathers script is very good; the movie as a whole is very appealing and the conclusion is moving and captivating. The war scenes are very tense, gripping and compelling. There is also some comedy mixed in as well. Starring: Kevin Downes, David A.R.
