From Houses to Hospitals: Improving Healthcare in the 1920s

Festivities for Good Samaritan Medical Center’s 100th anniversary were curtailed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, an event that led to questions about how and why healthcare changed radically during and after World War I. From Houses to Hospitals examines how Palm Beach County’s modern healthcare system developed, expanding during the Roaring ‘20s.

Famous Firsts recognizes the first Black females in the Palm Beach County legal community. Representing a wide range of professional positions that have been traditionally male dominated, these women faced gender and racial barriers and overcame them.

Precious Gift: Rescue and Shanghai

The Johnson History Museum will offer an exhibit created by the Amud Aish Memorial Museum in Brooklyn, New York. Precious Gift: Rescue and Shanghai explores how European Jews found refuge in Japan and China, far from the deadly influence of Adolph Hitler. Diplomats from Japan, the Netherlands, and Lithuania enabled travel from Europe to the Far East, where families could reestablish their lives and practice their religion. “The story of the Jews’ escape to Shanghai carries with it important lessons: the power of faith, the importance of perseverance, the role of resilience, and the imperative of survival,” said Rabbi Sholom Friedmann, Director of Amud Aish Memorial Museum.

The US Congress designated the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, which in 2023 occurs on April 16-23. Each March, our Women's History Initiative celebrates contributions and achievements of women in a broad variety of fields. This exhibit features women of Palm Beach County who have stepped out, breaking barriers. Visitors will broaden their understanding of the suffrage movement in the United States and women's activism, including the part race played in challenging universal suffrage.

Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom Hashoah, marks the anniversary of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Poland.

VIRTUAL HISTORY TALKS

José Garcia, PhD The Mariel Boatlift In 1980, desperate Cuban refugees set out across the Straits of Florida to escape political and economic repression. Many longed to reunite with family members in the United States, who had already escaped from Fidel Castro’s communist dictatorship. Dr. José García was one of more than 125,000 Cuban immigrants who took part in the Mariel boatlift and has presented his experiences around the world. The journey of Marjorie Merriweather Post, of Mar-a-Lago fame, began gluing cereal boxes in her father’s barn as a young girl. No one could have predicted that C. W. Post’s Cereal Company would grow into the General Foods empire, with Marjorie as its heiress and leading lady. Not content to stay in her prescribed roles of highsociety wife, mother and hostess, Marjorie became the wealthiest woman in the United States before the age of 30. Pataki is a New York Times bestselling author of five historical novels featuring fascinating women.

Powell presents his interviews with refugees who left Cuba between 1959 and the 1962 Missile Crisis and those on the Freedom Flights of the late 1960s and early 1970s. More than 600,000 Cubans migrated to the US, many arriving in Miami with only a few clothes and pocket money. Exiles describe why they left the island, how they prepared for departure, what situations they faced in the US, and how they integrated into American life. Powell's work is preserved in the University of Miami Cuban Heritage Collection.

The Florida Sugar Cane League was founded in 1964 by George Wedgworth and a group of South Florida farmers. It represents all the nearly 300 farmers in the EAA through its educational efforts. Its mission is to build sustainable long-term relationships between agriculture and Palm Beach County’s diverse population by exposing those on the East Coast to the lives and livelihoods of the people who grow much of their food. The League offers “Meet A Farmer” luncheons and Farm-To-Table dinners to strengthen that bond. It also represents the industry’s interests in Washington, DC.

The HSPBC has partnered with the League to reserve two dates for their group Farm Tour. It is a fun, informative trip into the heart of the area where our farmers grow food for you and your family. Guests learn how farmers grow sugar cane and the many other crops that make the Everglades Agricultural Area the Winter Vegetable Capital of the World. The sheer vastness of the land, the economic impact of agriculture, and the importance of Lake Okeechobee are all on the agenda as the League seeks to provide a first-hand glance at life in the Glades. Register at pbchistory.org or call 561. 832. 4164 ext. 100.

Agriculture has long been the lifeblood of Palm Beach County, beginning with our early European settlements. In what would become the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), settlers and land speculators found unique conditions for growing food. The muck soil, heat, and flat land made the EAA a perfect conduit for feeding South Florida—and later, the nation. Palm Beach County leads the nation in the production of sugar cane, sweet corn, sweet bell peppers, lettuce, radishes, Chinese vegetables, specialty leaf, and celery.

ARCHIVAL EVENING

The premier benefit event of the HSPBC is Archival Evening, a muchanticipated dinner dance that highlights those whose achievements have substantially contributed to the unique character of this region. This year we will honor George T. Elmore. George Thomas Elmore moved to Florida at the age of 17 to work for his brother, Bob, who had recently moved his Hardrives Co. to Fort Lauderdale. In 1953 George founded Hardrives of Delray, so as not to encroach on his brother’s territory. Starting with a dump truck, roller, and grader, George’s company built much of Military Trail, Congress and Atlantic avenues, several segments of I-95, and much more. They provided road surface for schools and subdivisions, striving each time to be timely, cost-effective, and the highest possible quality. Elmore’s impact on Palm Beach County has gone far beyond the pavement. During the rapid development of the 1970s and 1980s, he was on the ground floor of the Economic Council, Business Development Board, Florida Atlantic University, Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and more. Since stepping back from leadership of Hardrives, he has spread even more time, wisdom, and funding among dozens of local private and quasi-government organizations.

THE 1916 SOCIETY

When you join the Historical Society of Palm Beach County at this most prestigious level, you enable us to help educate our county's children, maintain a free museum for all, and operate a vast archival research facility. The ways in which we share our history are changing. We appreciate your support as we continue to deepen our impact here in Palm Beach County.

When it was constructed in 1916 in sparsely populated West Palm Beach, the elegant neoclassical style of the Historic Palm Beach County Court House demonstrated the vision local government had that the country would develop into an important destination. In 2007, the structure was restored to its former grandeur and stands today as an icon and a testament to the county's phenomenal growth.
