Wish You Were Here: Tourism in the Palm Beaches
Tourism in the Palm Beaches
This season the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum invites visitors to dive into the evolution of our 150-year-old tourism industry. In 1875, this region was a pristine paradise, and the first visitors ventured south for the thrill of the hunt. Though Palm Beach County still attracts tourists for its natural beauty, its offerings have blossomed and diversified to include nearly every recreational opportunity under the sun. Wish You Were Here explores this development and how the business of fun and games and R&R still shapes and enriches the lives of tourists and residents today.
Wish You Were Here will transport you with celebrities, artifacts, and stories about the paradise that residents enjoy year-round. Every day is an opportunity to be a tourist at home. Play tennis after work or attend a golf tournament. Feel pampered at a resort spa. Take a weekend cruise. Enjoy cuisine from every corner of the world. Chill on the beach. Take in a museum exhibit!
Using new technologies, Wish You Were Here will allow visitors to get up close and personal with history. Flip through the pages of a 140-year-old diary on your phone. Listen to the jazz music that emanated from the Sunset Lounge nearly a century ago. View never-before-exhibited paintings by the Highwaymen. Learn the evolution of America’s national pastime, baseball, in Palm Beach County and see memorabilia from the region’s most prominent players of golf, tennis, and polo.
Bring the whole family to explore this dynamic past. In the Children’s Education Area, participate in activities, such as designing postcards. On scheduled days, docents will guide children through other activities; visit pbchistory.org for dates and times.
There will be a $12 admission fee to enter the Grand Exhibition for non-HSPBC members over 18 years of age. School Group Tours include 2 FREE Teacher Admissions to Grand Exhibition per class, up to 25 students.

The opening of the 7½-mile-long Celestial Railroad in 1889, linking the Indian River Lagoon in Jupiter to Juno on Lake Worth, served as the gateway for residents, goods, and tourists. This photo-rich presentation, largely sourced from the HSPBC archives, will include vivid before-and-after views of a transformative five-year period.

Tom Warnke is a local historian and the executive director of Surfing Florida Museum in West Palm Beach. He has been surfing since 1956, when his family moved to Boynton Beach. In 1966, Tom founded the surfing organization Cripple Creek Surf Club. He became president of the Palm Beach County Surfing Association, which convinced the Florida Supreme Court to strike down a local ordinance that had banned surfing in the 1960s.
Tom was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame and founded Florida's first Surfrider Foundation Chapter in Palm Beach County. Since 2021, he has been the archive coordinator for the Delray Beach Historical Society.

Moderator Gaby Viteri, from Ecuador, will lead a discussion with the artists whose work is on display in the multidisciplinary exhibit she curated, Visual & Natural, exploring the connectivity between Latinx traditions and cultures. Paloma Eden’s work encompasses painting, calligraphy, and flamenco dance, which is inspired by her Puerto Rican heritage. It explores deep and raw emotions.

Maria Magdalena Marcenaro is an Argentine visual artist whose work celebrates color, nature, and humanity as she explores magical realism, Latin American folk arts, and literature to inspire emotional connectivity.
Caromoonstar uses cosmic and universal language to explain connections with bright colors and organic figures that reflect her upbringing in Venezuela, Chile, and Florida.

Portraits of the Highwaymen
Robert L. Lewis | Live Painting
5:30 - 7:30 pm
Historic Courtroom
In celebration of Black History Month, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County will present the exhibition Portraits of the Highwaymen, which will explore the original Highwaymen artists and their impact on Florida landscape painting. The Highwaymen included 26 African American artists, primarily based in Fort Pierce, Florida, who rose to prominence in the mid-1950s. Their distinctive landscapes, often sold door-todoor or from car trunks along Florida's coastal roads, totaled over 200,000 paintings. Despite facing rejection from galleries and navigating the racial tensions of the Jim Crow era, they achieved remarkable success and inspired future generations of African Americans to pursue their craft.
In addition, the HSPBC will host Highwaymen artist Robert L. Lewis for a live painting event. Don't miss this opportunity to witness the creation of vibrant Florida landscapes and learn about the rich history of the Highwaymen artists.
Look for HSPBC announcements to register for this free community event.

Through our Women’s History Initiative, we facilitate a growing group of both women and men who support activities to recognize and empower the strength of women in our community, past and present.

Coconuts, Beaches, Mosquitoes, and Panthers: The Pioneer Era: Today Palm Beach County is a modern paradise and easily reached. The Gilded Age in Palm Beach: Nationwide, the Gilded Age lasted from about 1877 to 1890. LANDMARKED HOME LEGACY PROGRAM
The Historical Society of Palm Beach County maintains a vast archival collection (SEE Archival Collection, page 40). This valuable resource contains primary and secondary sources on Palm Beach County and Florida history, including architectural drawings and other information related to Palm Beach properties that are safeguarded by the town’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The HSPBC sincerely appreciates the owners of these properties for their commitment to preserving these historic icons. With more and more people seeking refuge in our paradise year-round, it is a critical time to save our past for future generations.
The Historical Society is the steward for some of the most prominent names in Palm Beach architectural history, such as Treanor & Fatio, Gustav A. Maass, William Manley King, Howard Major, Marion Sims Wyeth, and, of course, Addison Mizner. Owners of a landmarked property can learn more about its unique story through the HSPBC Landmarked Home Legacy Program. The Historical Society limits access to information on a private home to its owner of record.
Landmarked Home Legacy Program Benefits:
• Academic Research: Up to 20 hours of top-level research of our archives associated with the property, which may include architectural drawings, newspaper articles, documentation, photographs, and more.
• Digitized files: A digital copy of relevant files with written description.
• Accessible files: Access twice annually to relevant items and artifacts.
• Protected files: Permanent, secure storage, according to the best preservation standards and practices.

ARCHIVAL COLLECTION
Since 1937, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County has been the principal repository for historical materials and artifacts that document the area’s history. Our collection has become a respected source and treasure trove for residents and researchers worldwide, ever since the gift of The Right Reverend Nathaniel Seymour Thomas’s extensive Floridiana and rare book collection became the cornerstone for the nascent Society’s holdings.
The HSPBC’s vast resources have recorded civic milestones and cultural events. The archive contains four million images. The museum also has a vast collection of three-dimensional artifacts, numbering more than five thousand items, representing Palm Beach County's material culture of the 19th to 21st centuries. The Library Collection includes over 4,600 book titles. Archival research files contain architectural drawings, diaries, manuscripts, correspondence, family scrapbooks, oral histories, and other documentation of Palm Beach County’s unique past.
Over the years, the Society has transformed these collections into multi-dimensional interactive exhibitions for the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum and for pop-up exhibits that travel throughout the county. They are a source for the history and civics programming that we provide free of charge (SEE Education, page 39). The Historical Society has published many books encompassing the people, places, and events of diverse local history, from the Everglades to Palm Beach.
The Historic 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse, designed by noted Jacksonville architect Wilber Burt Talley, reflects the architectural and civic history of West Palm Beach. Construction of the building coincided with a period of rapid growth and development in Palm Beach County, which had been incorporated in 1909.
The courthouse quickly became a focal point of the county's civic life, housing government offices, and courtrooms, and serving as a venue for significant legal and social events. Throughout the decades, the building underwent modifications to accommodate the county’s growing needs. By the 1970s, another need for more space in a modern judicial complex led to the courthouse being encased within a larger structure, hiding its original façade.
The historic significance of the courthouse was recognized in the late 20th century, sparking efforts to restore and preserve the building. In the early 2000s, a major project of meticulous effort uncovered the original structure from its modern shell and revealed its former glory. Completed in 2007, the courthouse was reopened to the public as a historical museum and cultural landmark.

BEHIND THE PALMS
In 2022, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County began a collaboration between our Research Department and Kilo Content to produce a video series, Behind the Palms, hosted by Kilo owner Kent Anderson. Behind the Palms breathes creative life into seldom-heard stories of Palm Beach County history. The first episode won a Telly Award!
Each new episode premieres at one of our events. All episodes then reside on the HSPBC YouTube channel for all to enjoy anytime. Look for these upcoming episodes:
Peanut Island’s Presidential Bunker – Why is one of only two presidential bomb shelters located on Peanut island?
The Amaryllis – How did this shipwreck create one of the best surf breaks in the world?
Big Mound City – Why does this prehistoric site change everything we know about Florida history? The Ashley Gang – How did “borrowing” a brother’s car lead to the downfall of Florida’s most notorious gang family?
Fannie James, Postmistress – How did an African American woman come to hold one of the highest government offices in a southern town in the 1890s?
Myth Busters – What is the truth behind many Palm Beach County legends?
Watch these past episodes on YouTube. (1) How a Shipwreck led to Billionaire's Row, the remarkable relationship between a beached ship on Palm Beach and formation of the island’s Billionaires Row; (2) The Conchtown Rumrunners, the original residents during Prohibition; (3) The First International Airport, proving that the first international trips were piloted in Palm Beach County, not from London in 1919; and (4) Gateway Marathon, the historic offshore race that returned in 2019.
