There’s nothing more freeing than taking to the water. Venturing out into oceans, fjords and bays, with the sun beating high above you and crystal waves moving gently all around. If that sounds appealing to you, then these six sailing destinations across Europe are bound to tempt you to take your next aquatic escape – and each boat-friendly locale is conveniently close to some of our loveliest properties, too… Photo: Rhodes island, Greece HistoricHotelsofEurope.com | The Historic Traveller 7

Croatia

Looking for the best sailing destinations in Southeast Europe? Croatia is sure to deliver. With amazing bays and ports up and down its stunning coast, its water-based excursions are hard to beat… wherever in the country you make your base. In northern Croatia you’ll find Kvarner Gulf – a scintillating bay home to independent restaurants, bars and clubs that sit snugly against the coast – where you can sail among dolphins against a colourful horizon. Head down south, and you’ll be spoilt for choice for other prime sailing destinations. There’s the island Brač, where you’ll discover one of the country’s most famous beaches, Zlatni Rat – also known as the “Golden Horn”. The blue cave in Biševo is well worth your attention, too, while the Pakleni islands – a stunning archipelago full of tropical treasures – provide plenty of places for you to explore on the water.

Hotel Villa Astra

WHERE TO STAY If Kvarner Bay is where you want to be, check out Hotel Villa Astra. This renovated property, designed by an esteemed Venetian architect, is beautiful, boutique and bespoke: the ideal trio. Within its sunflower-hued walls are seven intimate bedrooms, while just outside is a secluded outdoor swimming pool and range of emerald gardens, which look almost ethereal in summertime’s glow. www.hhe.travel/astra Down south Puteus Palace offers a luxury five-star heritage hotel experience you’re bound to appreciate even more after fulfilling and thrilling – but tiring – days on the waves. The hotel has only fifteen rooms and suites, assuring wonderful, hands-on hospitality. Outdoor and private wellness facilities like a pool, finnish sauna and jacuzzi only contribute more to the paradisiacal vibes of the palace.. www.hhe.travel/puteus

Greece One of the obvious places to consider is Rhodes. A famously beloved Greek island, this tourist hotspot is also a fantastic place to kickstart any number of water-based adventures. Right in the heart of the Dodecanese, and close to fascinating locations including the volcanic island of Nisyros, the fishing villages of Tilos and much more, you could spend weeks on the water here and still not manage to see it all. Historic Crete also has similar sailing fruits on offer, and from here, you can enjoy a variety of boat tours from Heraklion, Chania, Elounda and more: giving you plenty of flexibility for where you’d like your aquatic adventures to lead. Alternatively – for a less touristy trip – you might want to consider the Deep Mani area of the country, which boasts hidden coves and glistening, private bays that have managed to remain something of a secret to holidaymakers. Enjoying breathtaking sailing excursions to the Diros caves – which look like something from another world – or explore the even more remote parts of the rocky peninsula by going further south, where traditional villages and quiet, secluded beaches await…

WHERE TO STAY

Situated on a charming cobblestone street in the medieval heart of Rhodes, you’ll find Allegory Boutique Hotel. Equal parts inviting and noble, its guests enjoy a range of contemporary amenities in a cultural setting that simply oozes history: a favourite combination of ours. www.hhe.travel/allegory

This cluster of Venetian houses contains seven luxurious, bespoke suites that are bound to give you some interior design inspiration, along with fantastic touches throughout the hotel such as Cretan art, fountains and a sprawling wine cellar. www.hhe.travel/avli-lounge

Finally – for your secretive excursions in Mani – Kyrimai is the place to go. With its warm and traditional furnishings and delicious on-site restaurant, as well as a string of accolades to its name – including The Best Historic Hotel of Europe by the Water award – you know you’re guaranteed an incredible stay when you book. www.hhe.travel/kyrimai

Ireland

Ireland has long-been revered for its glittering coastlines and sandy bays… but when you’re throwing sailing into the mix, there are a few spots that really stand out. Kenmare Bay – a gorgeous blue expanse of water surrounded by lush wildlife – has many “water adventures” on offer via companies such as Star Outdoors, including cruise ships, kayaking, canoeing, pedal boating and sailing. Elsewhere, the glacial fjord – Carlingford Lough – promises sailing adventures aplenty in the midst of the more untapped Irish countryside, while in Donegal, Lough Swilly is a must-visit… particularly as it sits on the Wild Atlantic Way. Between its famously varied coastline and array of blissful beaches, there are more than enough sailing destinations here to whet the watery appetites of every type of sailor.

Poland Poland might not immediately spring to mind when you think of sailing destinations across Europe, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth considering… quite the opposite. Though the country is more known for its culture-filled cities and fascinating history, its countryside also bears many fruits: particularly the West Pomeranian Sailing Route. This watery trail encompasses a network of harbours and marines between Szczecin and the West Pomeranian Baltic coast, with an impressive twenty locations on the way – allowing you to dive into the country’s more rural side from many sapphire shores. What’s more, you can try out many different water activities on this route, from windsurfing to kite-flying and kayaking.

WHERE TO STAY A fairytale forest deserves a fairytale palace to match – and that’s exactly what you’ll find in the exquisite Manowce Palace. Flanked by woods and close to one of the West Pomeranian Sailing Route’s many starting points, this one-ofa-kind hotel will help you enjoy the Polish countryside in an unmatched fashion. It’s a great choice if you’re travelling in a group, too – available for full hire, Time to plan that next big trip… www.hhe.travel/manowce

Norway

The city of Bergen is one of Norway’s leading cruise ports, and what’s more, sits close to a gorgeous fjord – giving you plenty of scope for sailing adventures. With handy resources and boating companies based around the city to help you start sailing, it’s easy for you to get to the water – and encouraged, too, as it’s known for being one of the best ways to sightsee. In particular, Bergen’s popular sailboat cruises combine the beauty of the fjords with Nordic history: complete with a captain that shares stories about Bergen’s unique past while you float by, and admire, the city’s shores. A special experience for all sailing aficionados.

WHERE TO STAY IN BERGEN Hotel Park is just a short walk away from Bergen’s various waters, along with a handy boat equipment shop where you can stock up on whatever you need for embarking to your sailing destinations. The building itself, which dates back to the 1890s, has a lovely, historic feel too – decorated with tasteful rare antiques and traditionallyfurnished rooms that sets it apart from the other hotels in the area... www.hhe.travel/park HistoricHotelsofEurope.com | The Historic Traveller 15

EUROPEAN CASTLES

Architectural Dreams:

8 EUROPEAN CASTLES YOU CAN ACTUALLY STAY IN From baronial Welsh beauties to fairytale stays in Germany, these bonafide castle hotels in Europe are all chandeliers, champagne and chinoiserie. Some have luxury whirlpools and sumptuous saunas, others have gastronomic restaurants and lakeside terraces. There are castles with fourposter beds and open fireplaces, rose gardens and red carpets… but all of them have one thing in common: a rich, wonderful, worldly, immersive story to tell. Which one of these astonishing castles would you love to spend the night in?

HistoricHotelsofEurope.com | The Historic Traveller 17

EUROPEAN CASTLES

HAVERFORDWEST, WALES

Roch Castle The story of Roch Castle is an unusual one. The first known inhabitant was a Norman knight by the name of Adam de Rupe. Legend has it that Adam built the castle on a rock as a result of a prophecy that a viper would bite and kill him within a year. He planned to live in the very top room until the prophecy passed, but it’s said that the viper was hidden in firewood and snuck in, biting and killing him. The very top bedroom of this 12th-century treasure is named after De Rupe. With five stars, luxurious amenities and superb customer service, the award-winning stay encapsulates the feeling of staying in a real castle, with all the modern comforts. www.hhe.travel/roch-castle

18 The Historic Traveller | HistoricHotelsofEurope.com

TUSCANY, ITALY

Castello di Gargonza “My father always said that a building is completely restored when we can recoup the memory of its former inhabitants”, owner of Castello di Gargonza, Neri Guicciardini tells us. At the end of the 60s, his father brought the 13th-century castle back to life, along with the “ghost village” that surrounded it.

Today, Neri and his wife Elisa welcome guests from all over the world to experience life inside the village, with one of the best castle hotels in Europe as your homely base. Think open fires, authentic Tuscan dishes and old wooden staircases. www.hhe.travel/gargonza

HistoricHotelsofEurope.com | The Historic Traveller 19

EUROPEAN CASTLES

KILDARE, IRELAND

Barberstown Castle Not your ordinary castle: Barberstown Castle was once home to rockstar Eric Clapton. Before the Tears in Heaven singer moved in, this 13th-century castle was home to nearly 40 other residents - one of which is spookily rumoured to be interred within the tower.

Less than 30 minutes from Dublin, this charming castle experience is convenient to get to, but far enough to transport you to another time in history. www.hhe.travel/barberstown

20 The Historic Traveller | HistoricHotelsofEurope.com

UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS

Kasteel Sterkenburg Perched on an island, surrounded by canals, this 13th-century castle is a grand example of power and splendour. Recharge your soul in the elegantly lush grounds: storks nest by the castle, chickens strut through the garden and roe deer appear in the orchard during twilight.

Your room purposely doesn’t have a television, allowing you to feel closer than ever to Mother Nature. From Kestrel to Kingfisher, the eight individually designed B&B rooms are named after the birds who live on the estate (apart from the odd one out room “Turtle”). Breakfast is served in former gardener’s house - do try the plum jam, which comes straight from the Sterkenburg orchard. www.hhe.travel/sterkenburg

HistoricHotelsofEurope.com | The Historic Traveller 21

EUROPEAN CASTLES

LIBLICE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Chateau Liblice Czech Republic isn’t short of castles, but Chateau Liblice is one of the most romantic, historic and relaxing of them all. Since the Baroque building was erected in 1699, it’s been a magnificent home for both counts and countesses.

Now, thanks to extensive recontruction, it´s a home-awayfrom-home for the modern traveller. The spa and wellness experiences within are out of this world: everything from chocolate massages to the ‘sunny meadow’ leave you floating with euphoric bliss. www.hhe.travel/liblice

22 The Historic Traveller | HistoricHotelsofEurope.com

LAKE COSTANCE, SWITZERLAND

Schloss Wartegg Castle hotels in Europe are no spring chickens - this Swiss residence Schloss Wartegg goes all the way back to 1575. But that doesn’t mean it’s not twice as grand as the days Empress Zita mooched through its gardens. Choose from two bedroom views: a glorious green park or the sparkling Lake Constance. Life’s tough, isn’t it? www.hhe.travel/wartegg

HistoricHotelsofEurope.com | The Historic Traveller 23

EUROPEAN CASTLES

MERANO, ITALY

Hotel Castel Rundegg Hotel Castel Rundegg looks as if it’s been lifted from a love story. A spellbinding whirl of sunshine and South Tyrolean spirit, the Merano-based beauty is one of the most intimate castle hotels in Europe. There are 30 rooms, each charmingly decorated to make you feel instantly at home. All tastes are catered for in the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant - vegetarian and gluten-free food is also available. www.hhe.travel/rundegg

WEEZE, GERMANY

Schloss Hertefeld A castle in the country: it’s the dream. Schloss Hertefeld is the only inhabitable castle ruin in Germany, with a fascinating history than spans back more than 800 years. We’d recommend booking a night in the imaginatively designed Tower Room, or the glorious Heaven’s Room - complete with not one but two bathtubs and a rooftop that can be opened to gaze at the night sky. www.hhe.travel/hertefeld

CITY GUIDE VIENNA

26 The Historic Traveller | HistoricHotelsofEurope.com

My Town VIENNA All senses are smattered in Vienna. The sweet scent of apple strudel lingers in your nostrils, the tinkling sound of Strauss gently caresses your ears, and richly ornate architecture sends your jaw to the floor. With 23 districts to choose from - each stuffed with opera houses, museums, parks, shops, art galleries and palaces - it can be difficult knowing where to start.

CITY GUIDE VIENNA

CULTURE For a dip into Vienna’s musical past: Innere Stadt There’s a district to match every experience you’re craving in Vienna. Music lovers will find their happy place in the heart of the city: Innere Stadt is a playground of musical monuments dedicated to the capital’s classical history. Feel closer to the composer royalty at Mozarthaus, learn how to conduct a virtual opera at the House of Music, or feel your hairs raise with a show at the Vienna State Opera House.

Opera House

Prater

For family fun and green spaces galore: Leopoldstadt and Prater

For imperial time-travel: Schönbrunn Palace

Whether you’re with kids or big kids, it’s impossible to be bored in Leopoldstadt. The island is taken over by the giant Prater park (known as ‘Green Prater), where locals flock to for picnics, strolls and lazing. Turn up the pace at one of the 250+ Vienna attractions - from wax wonderland Madame Tussauds to go-karting. For the best views in the city, jump on the huge ferris wheel at the park entrance.

There are 45 precious rooms to pace in all their Rococo glory at the majestical Schönbrunn Palace. Nothing here has lost any of its former beauty - you can happily imagine the life of Viennese royalty as you ooh and ahh in the state rooms and private apartments of Franz Joseph and Sisi.

28 The Historic Traveller | HistoricHotelsofEurope.com

Albertina Museum

Schönbrunn Park and Palace

Must-see Museums Two words: Gustav Klimt. Belvedere is an essential part of his story – the Vienna-born artist, founded the museum in 1903 and helped mould it into the greatest collection of Austrian art it is today. Artlovers who venture to Albertina are rewarded with a varied and outstanding selection of works. Some of its mainstay masterpieces include art by Monet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. A completely off-thewall art experience, The Museum of Art Fakes is stuffed with replicas made by famous forgers, this (ironically) one-of-a-kind gallery is totally unforgettable.

Squeeze an Empress Sisi walking tour into your schedule. The empress is one of the most famous women in Austrian history and left a huge impression on her peers for her remarkable character, nonconformism and “modern” attitude (she even had a tattoo!). See where she shopped, slumbered and snacked while your guide regales you with stories about the revolutionary royal

CITY GUIDE VIENNA

FOOD For sweet treats and classical culture: Cafe Frauenhuber and Café Sacher From home-cooked goulash to schnitzels the size of your face, Vienna is a dream for foodies. Cafe Frauenhuber is where smart locals slide into a seat, eager to fill up on authentic Austrian fare. While the plum strudels and cream-topped coffees are worth visiting for alone, the historic coffee house also has another fascinating draw: this was the place Mozart performed his last every public show in 1791. If chocolate is your thing, put aside some time during your Viennese escape to track down some “Sacher Torte”: a classic Austrian cake layered with apricot preserves. Café Sacher serves an exemplary slice. For old-world charm and authentic Austrian fare: Hotel Stefanie Book at table at Hotel Stefanie if you want traditional, upscale Viennese dining and staff who will move mountains to provide an unforgettable service - ask them for advice on everything from the history of the Wiener Schnitzel to the surrounding attractions.

Hundertwasser Village

SHOPPING

Packed inside an old car tire factory in Landstrasse is one of the coolest places in Vienna for shopping. Hundertwasser Village is utterly Instagrammable - stuffed with boutiques, shops, cafes and a rooftop forest. It’s designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who also created the dazzling monochrome patchwork on the famous Kunst Haus Wien museum. Nip by to snap photos of the architecture and go in to explore the contemporary photography, if that’s your thing.

For sightseeing and retail therapy: Mariahilf You won’t know where to look first on a walk down Mariahilferstrasse - Vienna’s oldest, longest, most famous shopping street. Dive into quirky boutiques and inspiring shops, stopping only for a caffeine fix in some of the best coffee houses in the city. Set your compass east and you’ll find Naschmarkt - a fast-paced market boasting 120 stands of delectable global cuisine.

WHERE TO STAY Where better to head to for the local downlow than the Schick family - hosts of the oldest hotel in Vienna: Hotel Stefanie. The charming stay has accommodated, fed and wowed guests since the year 1600, oozing with old-world spirit, generous hospitality and lashings of Viennese ‘Schmäh’. t’s also a very forward-looking destination, with some of the area’s best accommodation and restaurants. www.hhe.travel/stefanie

WANDER ANSBACH´S GARDEN OF MARGRAVES Pastoral Bavaria is home to some of the most magical European parks on the map. But if we had to choose just one to dive into, we’d have to pick the Margraves of Ansbach. Gardens in southern Germany just don’t get more magnificent than this. In particular, the “Hofgarten” (Court Garden) is a must-visit – where natural greenery sits alongside more formal, Baroque-inspired parkland, and a giant orangery creates a stunning silhouette against the Bavarian skyline. Once a year in July, it also hosts the Rococo festival, which celebrates the elegance of the Ansbach court. It’s quite the historic affair.

WHERE TO STAY: Close to the gardens you’ll find Schwarzer Bock, a boutique hotel that’s beloved by guests the world over. Modern amenities and medieval influence are expertly met, here, making your stay one that’s as comfortable as it is cultural. HIKING DESTINATIONS

AUSTRIA

Gleinkersee Many of Austria’s best early summer hikes revolve around Gleinkersee: a small alpine lake surrounded by hills, trees, mountains and playgrounds. Test yourself with a hike up to the Dümlerhütte Alpine Hut, starting at the lake’s crystal waters, or embark on a less intense trip round the nearby Wurzeralm pastures or the lake itself. Following your walk, there are plenty of ways you can take to the water, too, including sailing on a wooden jetty or taking a trip on the “legend boat”, which you can ride while listening to local legends from an experienced storyteller. There are options for everyone.

WHERE TO STAY Where to stay: It’s hard to imagine a person who wouldn’t immediately fall under the spell of Villa Bergzauber. This fairytale property can’t fail to lift your spirits, whether you’re taking a dip in its outdoor heated pool or sinking into a perfect sleep on your ultra-soft pillow in a Superior room. www.hhe.travel/bergzauber

An unmissable slice of Swiss bliss..

Whitesands Bay PEMBROKESHIRE - Whitesands Bay is one of the best surfing beaches in the country, but includes plenty of things to do for travellers outside of its wondrous waters. Routes around the beach include panoramic views of Ramsey Island and a glorious trail along St David’s Head – where you’re likely to stumble across the historic Neolithic tomb, Coetan Arthur Dolmen, dating from around 3,000 BCE. These are just a few of the amazing options in this pocket of the world, too. North Pembrokeshire is home to 186 miles of coastal trail, making it a hotbed of exemplary early summer hikes.

62 The Historic Traveller | HistoricHotelsofEurope.com

WHERE TO STAY Conveniently close to Whitesands Bay is Twr y Felin Hotel. Built in 1806, this four-star hotel combines contemporary and classic styles with well-practiced flair. the country, including historic beehive huts. Make sure you pause to refill at Dingle Town, too, for a taste of traditional and Irish life. The pastel-coloured streets here are home to a ton of cosy pubs, music venues and boutiques, sitting snugly against the backdrop of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Italy: Palermo

Palermo, with its Arab-Norman roots and UNESCO World Heritage status, is permanently camera-ready. Every twist and turn of this divine Sicilian city reveals something new. Head straight to the Cappella Palatina, a chapel designed in 1130, for a strong dose of design to get you started. A part of the ceiling here is decorated by star-shaped panels, created by 12th-century Maghreb craftsmen, while religious mosaics and intricate sculptures can’t help but draw the eye. Other unmissable sights include the Massimo Theatre, an opulent opera house, and Mondello Beach: a perfect slice of paradise encircled by mansions, cliffs and leafy foliage.
