SUPPORT HISTORIC MACON

Historic Macon Foundation is a non-profit organization that revitalizes our community by preserving architecture and sharing history. Our vision is to be the premier preservation organization in the nation. Historic Macon is a national leader in preservation and a role model for revitalization efforts throughout the country. Our innovative real estate tactics, state and federal tax credit consulting services, advocacy efforts with the Fading Five list of endangered places, educational programming, and low interest loan programs allow us to transform our community and demonstrate the powerful impact of saving historic places. We’ve completed nearly 150 houses and kept 25,000 tons of debris out of the landfill. Since 2014, we’ve attracted $5.8M in investments in our target neighborhood, Beall’s Hill, and expanded our efforts to Mill Hill in collaboration with the Macon Arts Alliance and the Urban Development Authority.

Our work allows citizens to take preservation into their own hands. To date, Historic Macon has helped Maconites rehab 162 structures with our tax credit consulting service and awarded 67 loans for facade improvements. Citizens are improving their neighborhoods through Historic Macon’s Neighborhood Incubator program throughout Macon-Bibb. Our work continues to expand as we revitalize and preserve Macon. With the help of our community, we are proving that Macon is preservation.

Historic Macon’s staff works to preserve and revitalize Macon every day. Historic Macon is currently rehabbing a downtown building to serve as its new headquarters. Staff are pictured in their future offices at 338 Poplar Street in the above photo. Interested in supporting preservation in Macon? Visit the ticket table to become a member! THE PORTER HOUSE The Porter House’s Construction

In the summer of 1927, Mr. James Hyde Porter and his wife, Mrs. Olive Swann Porter, went on a trip to Normandy, France. The Porters drove around the countryside and Mr. Porter decided he would build a French-inspired house if he ever had the chance. The opportunity came later that same year and Mr. Porter consulted with W.E. Dunwody Jr., a local Macon architect, to design a unique building that referenced the Porters’ trip. Dunwody referred to this chateau-inspired building as the “Farm House” and designed several other structures for the Porters’ property. The property, known as Porterdale, includl id ria ed a swimming pool, pool house, formal garden, garage, green house, experimen- dle Geor mo e nM gia A rchives, Washingto tal fields, and bird coops. In particular, Porterdale became very well known for its rose garden and the Porters hosted the first annual meeting of the Georgia Rose Society at their home for a tour on May 1, 1934. At the time Dunwody designed this house, he shared an architectural firm with William Oliphant. That firm is still in existence today as Dunwody/Beeland, Architects, Inc. Mr. Porter and his wife spent weekends at this house from its completion in 1928 until Olive Swann Porter’s death in 1939. After Mrs. Porter died, Mr. Porter sold their house at 562 College Street and resided exclusively at this house. He lived there until his death in 1949.

Porter Connection to Wesleyan

, Au gust 1949.

While living in “the Porter House,” Mr. Porter gave $150,000 to Mercer University for the new female dormitory and $100,000 to Wesleyan College for work on its new campus, known as the “Rivoli” campus. The Porters did not have any children but he served on Wesleyan College’s Board of Trustees in the 1920s. In 1921, Dr. William Fletcher Quillian, president of Wesleyan College from 1920 to 1931, asked Mr. Porter to serve on the Board.

Mr. Porter had deeper connections to Wesleyan than his generous donation for the new Rivoli campus. He assisted the college a great deal during the Great Depression not only with his own personal wealth, but by also encourag, Co ing other businessmen to give generously to the women’s institution. Mr. Porter’s V ll e XX ge ol. A V , r chiv e service was fortuitous for the college, since they were in the process of moving the es , Th mna e Wesleyan Alu campus from InTown Macon in order to have a more modern campus with more space. The college purchased the land for the current campus, then known as the Rivoli Campus, in January 1923, and immediately began drawing up construction plans. Wesleyan hired a New York firm to design the campus, but Dunwody and Oliphant were the local associate architects on the project to oversee construction. In order to raise the money to pay for the new campus, Wesleyan College embarked on a capital campaign. The campaign started well, but an economic downturn in 1924 caused it to stall. Wesleyan desperately needed more space for its liberal arts facilities that the new Rivoli campus would provide, so the college decided to sell bond funds to help meet its $1 million capital campaign goal. The plan succeeded and construction of the new campus was scheduled to be complete in time for the 1928 fall term; the same year construction was completed on the Porter House. Wesleyan College’s liberal arts departments were just settling on their newly completed Rivoli Campus when

10

the Great Depression began. Although almost all colleges and universities suffered during this time, Wesleyan was particularly hard struck by the Depression because the bond funds they sold to complete the Rivoli Campus came due. Mr. Porter led a group of trustees to purchase all of Wesleyan’s debt, and then Porter gave two gifts totaling $150,000 to Wesleyan to cover its debt.

After Mr. Porter In 1951, Arthur Lewis and the First National Bank and Trust Company in Macon, functioning as executors of James Hyde Porter’s will, passed Porterdale on to Mrs. Kate M. Gillen. She borrowed against the property several times between acquiring it in 1951 and defaulting in November 1954. Porterdale sold on the courthouse steps on November 2,1954 to First Baptist Church of Christ, Macon for $2,710. On November 24, 1959, the property transferred from the First Baptist Church of Christ, Macon to Porterfield Baptist Church. After 1954, Porterfield Baptist Church utilized Porterdale as a combination of church offices, Sunday School rooms, lodgings for ministers, and a meeting space, which was used by Alcoholics Anonymous. All changes to the original house, including the additional bathroom, removal of two mantles and the corresponding walls, and the enclosure of the Covered Walk occurred in 1978 when the church renovated the property for more functional use as church offices. In 2008, a storm moved through south Bibb County and a tree limb fell through the roof of the house. In 2012, the Porterfield Baptist Church Board of Trustees voted to demolish the house, deciding it was too expensive to maintain. Wesleyan College, the Porter Trust, and Historic Macon Foundation brokered a deal to save the house by moving it off the church’s campus, which was executed by the Porterfield Baptist Church Board of Trustees on April 30, 2013.

Porter House Moves to Wesleyan On November 17, 2013, the Porter House was moved approximately 12 miles from its original location on Houston Road in south Bibb County to Tucker Road on the edge of Wesleyan College’s campus. The house was moved in two sections and placed on a new foundation that was constructed using the original Dunwody foundation plans. The bathroom addition was not moved with the rest of the house, and the infill of the covered walk was removed prior to the move. Between November 2013 and early 2015, Wesleyan worked on completing the foundation and exterior of the Porter House, not knowing if the property would ever be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. In May 2015, Georgia’s Historic Preservation Division officially declared the James Hyde and Olive Swann Porter House eligible for listing in the National Register and plans to complete the rehabilitation began in earnest. Dunwody/Beeland, Architects, Inc. oversaw the entire moving and rehabilitation process while R.C. Poss Construction oversaw the move and the initial phase of work. Sheridan Construction completed the rehabilitation. Late in 2016, the Porter House finally completed the journey that began with the threat of demolition in 2012. Saving this building would not have been possible without the support of the Porter Trust. Wesleyan College plans to use this architectural treasure as an event facility. Historic Macon recognized the efforts of The Porter Trust and Wesleyan College with the Thad E. Murphey President’s Choice Award during Historic Macon’s annual meeting and preservation awards in May 2017.

Terry Holland • Room 8 • front porch Terry has a degree in Architecture from Auburn University and has been an accredited Interior Designer for 35 years. He was attracted to this Design House due to other projects completed for Wesleyan College: Taylor Hall in 2010 with Dunwody/Beeland, Architects, Inc., Tate Hall administrative areas in 2011, and the Confucious Institute in 2013. In this case, he gathered Chinese artifacts housed all over campus and designed a gallery to exhibit them within the Willet Library. In 2011, his partner, Jeff Logan, opened If It’s Paper in historic Ingleside Village. When shopping for space, they hoped for an area to accommodate Time to Consign, the consignment shop located in the rear of the store that is merchandised by Terry. Once that store was established, Terry mentioned to several long-time clients he was considering early retirement from his design business. Several of them encouraged him to keep working and help them downsize. In the last four years he has moved seven clients to Carlyle Place, The Gables, and to smaller houses in Macon. Last year, he began looking for a smaller house within 60 miles of Macon for personal downsizing and closer proximity for long weekends than his house in Beaufort, SC. With some encouragement from Joni Woolf (former editor of Macon Magazine) he looked at houses in Americus, eventually purchasing a 1928 colonial revival style home in the historic district four months ago. Terry plans to keep his office located at 227 Orange Street in Macon for several more years and is now a freelance writer for the newly launched Americus Magazine. His architectural studio is located on the top floor of the family’s house, where she sat at a drafting table doing her own projects. Surrounded by all the hand drawn plans, she was naturally drawn to love architecture and design. In 2011, she graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA in Interior Design. After graduation, Carolyn worked on commercial interior design projects in Atlanta, first with BoggsVickers Architects and later with PFVS Architects. She then decided to join her father’s firm, DMMA, as Head of Interiors. Since working with her father, they have collaborated on both commercial and residential projects, ranging from new custom homes in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida to a new microbrewery that’s bringing an old cotton mill back to life in Greensboro, Georgia. While in the Art School at the University of Georgia, she spent the 2010 summer semester studying abroad in Cortona, Italy and there met Macon native, John Reichert, as he was studying for a Masters of Landscape Architecture. In early 2014, she moved from Athens to Macon with her husband and purchased a house on Orange Terrace from Historic Macon. The two designers had the opportunity to finish the construction plans, selections, and process. Their efforts earned them a 2015 Preservation Award from Historic Macon. Carolyn is an Allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. When she is not working, she loves raising her two year old daughter, Wren, and spending time in their blossoming backyard.

Megan Carson Sparks Yoga founders, Megan and Josh Carson, both grew up in Macon. When they decided to permanently put roots down here, they knew they wanted these roots to extend beyond simply living in Macon. They witnessed downtown come back to life over the last several years and saw a great opportunity to integrate one of their passions into this growing community. Megan has been teaching yoga since 2012, when she earned her teacher’s certification at Atlanta Peachtree Yoga. In addition to teaching in Macon and Atlanta, she has taught yoga internationally and worked in Costa Rica assisting in a training program for new yoga instructors. With the opening of Sparks Yoga, Megan and Josh sought to build a dynamic space that is welcoming to all. Whether you’ve tried yoga or it’s your first class, you will find what you’re looking for here: Sparks Yoga has experienced yoga teachers who provide classes that fit every body and every skill level.
