1120 GEORGIA AVENUE By Kristen Hartley, HISTORIC MACON INTERN Georgia Avenue has been prime real estate in Macon for many years, and in the mid-1800s, it was no different. Mr. Asher Ayers, one of Macon’s prominent citizens, bought the land on which the current home at 1120 Georgia Ave. stands in 1877. Mr. Ayers was a lawyer at the firm of R.K. Hines (advertisement from the August 28, 1878 issue of The Telegraph pictured right). While working at the firm, he would undertake public and private accounts, settlements of partnership affairs, receiverships, and confidential business of all kinds. He and the other associates that worked at the firm traveled across Middle and Southwest Georgia to help loyal, paying customers. Ayers later became Chief Deputy United States Marshal for the Southern District of Georgia. He served in this role for seven years and was widely known as the champion gunshot of Georgia. Everyone that came into contact with Mr. Ayers seemed to enjoy his presence, and it was once stated that he never had an enemy. Unfortunately, Mr. Ayers lived a short life, and in 1897 he passed away at the age of 37. He left behind a wife, two children, and an aged mother, who occupied the Ayers mansion on the corner of Walnut and Third Streets. Ayers originally bought the lot of land on Georgia Avenue as an investment. He paid $1,100 for the lot and sold it in 1881 for $2,250. The lot stayed empty until William Lee Ellis, the chairman of public works in Macon, purchased it in 1892 and the home was constructed on the lot. The lot was originally referenced as 300 Georgia Ave. until 1949 when the post office updated the addresses of the area. Ellis lived in the house for eight years and then sold it. The house then went through several owners until 1918 when Mr. Richard S. Thorpe bought the house for $13,200. Mr. Thorpe and his sons opened R.S. Thorpe and Sons clothing store (pictured above) at 567 Cherry St. in 1908. It was a clothing store for men and boys and had a women’s salon upstairs. An advertisement for the store from the October 11, 1913 issue of The Telegraph is pictured right. As a businessman, Mr. Thorpe was active in civic affairs and religious work in Macon society. He always assisted in projects that would help create a better Macon. Mr. Richard Thorpe passed away in 1929 and was survived by his four sons: Virgil S. Thorpe, Cecil A. Thorpe, J. (Mack) Harris Thorpe, and Warren Thorpe. After Richard’s death, the house went to Cecil and Warren.

Warren Thorpe and his wife Margaret had one daughter, Katherine Thorpe. They all shared the house with Mr. Cecil and seemed to make a very happy family. Katherine married John Dennis (pictured left). Wimberly Treadwell and Marion Discher, granddaughters of Warren and Margaret, recall going over to the home after school and eating Margaret’s delicious snacks. Margaret had an open-door policy; anyone was welcomed into the home. She frequently had members of the community over to play bridge. Warren brought the money into the home while Above: A photograph taken at Katherine Thorpe Dennis’ wedding, which took place at 1120 Georgia Ave. Katherine Margaret ran the household and was very active and John Dennis are pictured center. Seated on either side of in the community. She had a bachelor’s degree the photo are Warren (left) and Margaret Thorpe (right). from the University of California at Berkeley. She co-authored two books and was a contributor to specialized publications. She was the first president of the Junior League of Macon and was a member of the Macon Writers Club, the Macon History Club, the Mary Hammond Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.

Warren Thorpe passed away in 1974, and Katherine passed away two years later. Margaret helped take care of Katherine’s children, Wimberly, Marion, and (little) Warren. Margaret stayed in the Georgia Avenue home until 1975 when she moved to Magnolia Manor. Oscar Busboom bought the home and lived there with his family until the 1990s. The home saw two more families before it was recently purchased by David and Brooke Merrill, the current owners. The architecture of the house is magnificent both inside and out. The home is Queen Anne with Eastern Stick Style detail, which puts emphasis on asymmetrical composition and decorative “stick work.” The asymmetric style is prominent inside and outside of the home. The house also exhibits applied ornamentation in the form of wood boards on the exterior surfaces that are intended to express the inner structure of the building. The original front doors of the home are the focal point of the architecture. The ornate woodwork makes these doors a great entry way into the wonderful finishes inside the home. SUSAN RAZA | DOWNSTAIRS HALL/FOYER Transformational Designs, Inc. • 478-501-3373 • suraza@cox.net Susan Raza has been doing decorative and faux paint finishes, murals, furniture, and floors in Macon and the Central Georgia area for 12 years. She has participated in six Decorators’ Showhouses, and her work has appeared in Macon Magazine and The Telegraph. At this time, Susan is branching out and bringing her past design experience into the present with plans to do design work for clientele. With her experience in drafting for demolition/reconstruction, designing textiles, decorative painting and color work as well as her degree in interior design, she will create unique spaces that reflect the feel her clients intend and that they will enjoy living and entertaining in. This beautiful Victorian home of large spaces invites an eclectic treatment based in the traditional. Susan sees the expanse of wall space as an opportunity to display colorful artwork with accents of chinoiserie to create a diverse backdrop and mood. Susan treated the floor with a classic diamond pattern alternating with the existing heart pine to retain the flow of heart pine throughout the house. A koi fish swirls around the newel post. The diamond pattern is completed with an expresso border stenciled with a metallic pattern. The accent wall is textured with metallic to enrich the long space. The fireplace in Katherine Walden’s space uses a combination of colors and marbling to enhance the classic feel of the room.

BROOKE MERRILL | DINING ROOM Brooke Merrill Home • 678-458-5832 • brooke@brookemerrillhome.com In her former life as a Securities Operations Manager for J.P. Morgan in Dallas, Texas, Brooke excelled at recognizing the diverse personalities and the unique needs of her team. Although her career advanced rapidly, securities operations was a very poor outlet for her incredible creativity and immense sense of style. After pursuing an internship with Hannah Sophia Interiors, a Marietta interior design firm, she discovered her personal and professional mission: to create an affordable sanctuary for every client. That mission has served to establish Brooke Merrill Home as a recognized name and valued member of the Greater Atlanta design community. Visit Brooke’s website at www.brookemerrillhome.com.

VALORIE LEWIS | KITCHEN Breezy Hill Interiors • 478-447-2925 • valorielewis@aol.com Valorie Lewis landed her first decorating job while standing in line at a paint counter and boldly telling the store owner that he needed to hire her. That was over 25 years ago, and since then, countless people have realized that they, too, are in need of her talents. Valorie’s customers have found that she not only produces a polished, unique look, but also makes what can be a stressful process fun and enjoyable. Valorie works at Warno-Cam Paint Co. with Benji Lewis, her husband of 17 years. She and Benji have worked together for the entirety of their marriage to provide Macon with exceptional paint, wallpaper, blinds and fabric. She has also operated Breezy Hill Interiors, an interior design and consulting company, since 1995 and specializes in residential and commercial design. This is Valorie’s fifth Showhouse. In recent years, Valorie has become very much involved with Rooms From The Heart, a non-profit organization that provides bedroom makeovers and home repairs for children who are seriously ill. As a board member and as a contributing designer, Valorie enjoys working closely with these amazing children and their families to provide cheerful, restful and therapeutic dream rooms. She finds this volunteer work to be immensely rewarding and inspiring. When she is not working to make her clients’ homes more beautiful, Valorie can usually be found on her 20-acre farm in Jones County, Breezy Hill. There she enjoys gardening, tending her ducks, chickens, goats and horses, playing with her six grandchildren and entertaining friends and family in her renovated farmhouse.

MARGARETTE TAYLOR | MORNING ROOM Margarette Taylor Interiors • 136 Lundy Ct. • 478-476-9771 Margarette considers herself as an “ole pro” with Showhouses as this is her 11th. She has been in the design business for over 28 years. She loves working with clients from the ground up and also working with the clients’ personalities to make each home show their own personality—always in good taste! She enjoys the challenge and fun of participating in the Historic Macon Showhouse as this is a great way to help in redeveloping Macon’s historic community. “This year it is a privilege to have Deb Eliott Smith joining me in installing the morning room. Deb has her own business, Chez Moi, and loves finding interesting artifacts for her clients. She is such a pleasure to work with and is excited to see this ‘ole house come to life.’” Margarette extends a special thanks to her work room group and to the ever-faithful friends “who show up when [she needs] them.”

CANAAN MARSHALL | GUEST BATH Canaan Marshall Designs • 478-335-2484 • cmarshall85@yahoo.com Canaan Marshall’s professional career plays out like scenes from the movie, “Night at the Museum” or as a journey through Macon’s Museum of Arts and Sciences. The paths and roads taken have been anything but conventional. At the dawn of the new millennium, he began his artistic journey as a volunteer for special events at the Museum, which led to the paid position of Lead General Assistant. The journey continued on with later castings as Education Assistant, Facility/Group Service Coordinator and Special Events Coordinator. Mr. Marshall believes the design process should be fun and creative (much like his personal style, which blends New York “Chic” with English formality). His life experiences and the numerous projects he has created serve as building blocks in his development and preparation for the entrepreneur he has become today. Mr. Marshall is the gatekeeper of history and the storyteller of those who lived in the past, making those historical and ancient cultures come to life by infusing the link between the present and the past for this generation. Canaan is a proud Maconite and is a graduate of Central High School. He is currently pursuing a liberal arts degree from Mercer University. In his spare time, he indulges in his high regard for the performing arts as a singer and actor.
