Project: Triesenberg + New Fire Station

PUBLIC TRANSPORT All parts of the site are within 200m of bus stops.

ELECTRIC CAR RENTAL + ELECTRICITY STORAGE A electric car rental place is there which also acts as a storage for surplus electricity generated by the PV panels reducing reliance on the grid.

ACTIVE + PASSIVE BUILDING DESIGN All buildings are oriented to the south to maximise solar potential. The roof has been angled at 38deg. the most appropriate angle to benefit from year round solar orientation. The solar panels are used to generate heat water and the rest of the area dedicated as PV electricity generation.

1. Street Network

BIOMASS CHP BOILER The energy centre is fed with biomass generated from the farm and forests of the village.

PEDESTRIAN PREFERENCE Planning preference has been given to walking and the Greenway is a vehicle free zone in the centre of the development.

Proposed Road network

2. Pedestrian Movement

HEAT + ELECTRICITY

WASTE HEAT

GREENWAY The run off water is channelled into the swale in the middle of the site and further fed into a retention pond recharging ground water and reducing storm water run off.

GROUND SOURCE HEAT Deep bore wells are drilled to use the earth as a heat sink, reducing heating and cooling demand.

ENERGY CENTRE Uses a biomass Combined heat and Power (CHP) boiler to supply district heating to the settlement and at the same time producing electricity.

WASTE HEAT Waste heat from the industrial manufacturing is brought to the Energy centre for distribution for heating purpose. HEAT ELECTRICITY WATER

Residences

PROJECTS WORKED ON > >> >>> >>> >>>>

Residential Apartment building at Mehli, Shimla Temple Pavilion at Shathala Residence for Sanjay Garg, Chandigarh Residence for Hardayal and Kanwar Singh, Shimla Extension of parents residence, Shimla

> Residential Apartment building at Mehli, Shimla - 3 Apartments proposed in a block development parcel - very steep site Learning Intent Test proposal for an insulated thermally efficient building.

> Current Status of Project: sent for planning permission. Learning Outcome: > Difficult to convince developers for energy efficient or climatic designs as very few actual examples are built there in the region which can be replicated.

> Residence for Mr. Sanjay Garg - Complete rebuilding of an existing residence Learning Intent - Design Development - Construction document preparation

>> Residence for Hardayal and Kanwar Singh - Renovation and Extension of an existing residential building to create 3 separate apartments. Learning Intents: To explore the possibility of reusing an existing building and to extend the life without demolishing it completely.

> Current Status of Project: In principle approval of design concept. > Learning Outcome: Great satisfaction of the design outcome, reusing the existing structure gave the clients a new satisfaction of being connected to the heritage and at the same time was a big cost saving for them.

>> Extension of Residence for Parents - Renovation and Extension of an existing residential and farm building. > Learning Intents: - To implementing sustainable passive solar design solutions for climatically suitable environment. - Try and utilise local construction techniques.

GROUND FLOOR LVL

> Current Status of Project: Construction in progress > Learning Outcome: - Got the opportunity to implement the actual learnings of the Sustainable design courses. - The passive solar design strategies are experimental and unproven there but its a chance to put the learnings in practice. - Availability of technological expertise, materials and cost benefit analysis are needed to arrive at the best solution to be implemented. - Innovation and patience is the key.

>> Temple Pavilion - Pavilion for a village deity’s palanquin. > Learning Intents: - To be acquainted with the rich cultural tradition of building consturction. - Applying local traditional resources for a sustainable project.

> Learning Outcomes: - Extremely difficult to convince people of the relevance of traditional expertise which is looked down upon as ‘old fashioned’ - There is no organised method to undertake projects in a community setting, too many decision makers to influence the outcome.

LEARNING OUTCOME AIM > Implement what was learnt from the exposure in the alps. > Try and adhere to the standard of professional excellence in designing with minute details. > Try to get a high degree of workmanship. > Implement design for climatically suitable sustainable buildings

ACTUAL > Adapting technology to suit the conditions in India is a challenge considering the resources and expertise paucity. > What is taught in the school may not be directly relavent for the place I intend to work in now, but exposure to it is certain to change the way of thinking.

GOOD THINGS

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT

> Gave me a chance to put to practice what was learnt.

> More expertise from the architects to implement the ideas would have helped. Basically I was experimenting and am still not entirely sure of how the ideas will actually work.

> Time to introspect about the learning progress and the relevance in the real world situation. > Understanding the real meaning of Sustainability.

> Technical expertise to implement all what is available and done in the developed world. > Got a chance to work on the concentration of sustainable design studio but unfortunatley the project for the urban design got scrapped and I could not get a chance to try any ideas there.
