ANTHROPOMETRY Tarapur, India The brief of the project was to design an art and craft institute, where artists from respective art forms can stay for a short span and exhibit their work. Workshops were also provided in order to encourage collaborations of different artists. The accommodation is also provided for visitor’s to attend exhibitions or events happening on the campus. The bottom line for this studio was to understand anthropometry at such scale in polyhedrons. Case studies involved understanding cotton workshops in Bhuj, India.

Rhombi - cuboctahedrons as a form for the art institute.

1

Design Development The basic human anthropometry starts from human dimensions to the area required for any human activity. Here, polyhedrons being solids with multiple planes follow a geometrical rhythm which if placed in human scale, forces you to take care of the negative spaces being formed. The role is to avoid those spaces from becoming non-accesible. Rhombi - Cuboctahedron gives a linear ground coverage and narrows as it rises.

Art and craft institute needs to have workshops where cotton, metal and wood could be treated. They have been combined a placed in accordance to the noise they produce. Trees near the highway becomes a screen that lters noise and dust from the road. Also, it covers the most of South - West facade in order to keep the accommodation cool.

MATERIAL STUDIO Vadodara, India The agenda of the studio was to get a hold of various materials used in construction, as it is one of tthe key aspects afer lerning anthropometry. Site lies on the banks of Mahi river in Vadodara. A weekend house for an artist was the project brief. Stone as a construction material was used and a load bearing single height structure was designed with a character of cluster. Site area : 1130 sq mt.

Design Development The site lies on the banks of Mahi River, Vadodara and a weekend house demands leisure and relaxing spaces. Scattered stone structures take you to a trip. Halls have to be huge and in front, while swimming pools can hide between trees and open up to the river front. A gradient of slope on the site is used to bring levels into the picture, which can differentiate spaces. The plan follows a simple grid, but gym breaks the monotony.

CASE STUDY Nadiad, India A community in Nadiad called, “Desaivago” resides since 250 years. They were the landlords during Mughals and Britishers. The Patidars were the main residents of Nadiad at that time. Seperated in 4 groups as Desaivago, kakarkhad, samadi chakla and lakhawad. Our area of study is “Desaivago”. All roads and streets meet at the lake nearby, which makes the drainage natural and maintenance free. There are usual clusters of houses which reect the pol culture of Nadiad. Bhausaheb ni haveli has 200 rooms in one house with typical courtyards and multiple entrances. Proper documentation of Shankardas ni khadki was carried out.

D O C U M E N T A T I O N (GROUP WORK) “Shankardas ni khadki” is the name of the residence which was documented. The main aim was to study a house which was build 250 years ago in Nadiad. The construction of this load bearing structure involved mainly bricks. It had elements like traditional chajjas and balconies with low height parapets. This residence was a summer house for the family. Multiple terraces and balcoonies was the typical character of these kind of houses in “Desaivago”. Roof had layers sandwiched and also containd a layer of brick bed right below the overhead lofts in the roof. Also, acted as buffer spaces that didn’t let heat penetrate the lower levels.

CONTEXTUAL STUDIO Nadiad, India The brief of the project was to design a “Community Living Space” while keeping in mind the context of the site. Case studies involved the study of the “Pol culture” which was considered as the heart of the city. Desaivago is one such very old community that resides back in Nadiad. Shankardas ni khadki was the main focus of documentation and learning. I strongly believe in the beauty of “otla culture” and “Vadki culture” and have tried to bring back the essence of mutual shading, social connect and togetherness in this community living project. I strongly believe in the concept of considering context in a design. Courtyards are involved in ventilating the houses overall. Site Area : 784 sq mt.

Design Development Wanted to maintain the essence of long and narrow pol houses. Community living weaves the fabric of indian cities and spaces that encourage social and cultural interaction have to be planned accordingly. Focal point of plan ‘A’ is not catered. The arrows are pointing outwards. ‘B’ brings a common focal point.

INSTITUTION AL STUDIO Ahmedabad, India The brief was to design a Central Bus Terminus in Ahmedabad. This semester teaches how to handle public institutions in terms of scale, network and connectivity. The site lies in Geeta Mandir and has two existing darwaja’s. The old city of Ahmedabad is very congested and so, the roads along the length of the site are strictly one ways. This makes it more difď€ cult to circulate buses because the Terminus operates busses from North as well as South Gujarat. A lot of encroachment on the current streets is observed which narrows down the lanes. City bus transport had no access to the earlier bus terminuses. Richshaws and taxis encroach the immediate road connecting to any such station.

Astodia darwaja lies very near to the site, which is a heritage monument. Thus, 100mts of radius from any such monument is a no construction zone. The site has connections to Ahmedabad Railway Station. Site Area : 31,000 sq mt.

9

Design Development The site has existing darwajas which have been retained in the design. An axis has been developed which brings both the darwajas and the main entrance of the building in a single line. This is where people can connect through the long passages of the terminus. The form has mild curve to visually shorten the length of the structure.

BASIC DESIGN

Module Development - Polyhedrons

Semester 1

Semester 2

The main aim for this exercise was to learn how to scoop out volumes out of cubes and cuboids geometrically on grid. The method explored for subtracting volumes was CUT - CREASE - FOLD. Such units were then placed at different time zones of a day and documented. Learning how light and shadow plays an important role. Also. spaces created inside and outside the units after subtracting the volumes were related to spaces we regularly come accross.

Breaking the regular forms and exploring horizontal, vertical and voluminous characters by the use of polyhedrons. Creating modules and joining them at edges or vertex, giving birth to a new stable form through horizontal character.

Taking simple geometrical 2D shapes and keeping them as foreground in black or white backgrounds alternatively. Gradually increasing their sizes upto a level where foreground and background switch attentions.

11

PVC Workshop Semester 3

Depth In Graphics Semester 4

The agenda of this workshop was material exploration. Spaces for humans were designed and deď€ ned by a frame structure of PVC pipes. Surfaces were covered in order to manipulate spaces. A lot of junctions and material behaviour was discovered.

2D graphic was selected from a magazine. Was scaled up and painted in three different modes. Normal (Flat), Primary colours(Flat), Monochrome(Flat).

Foam Bricks & Siporex Blocks

Sketch-up Model The graphical frame was further done on a foam brick where volume had to be scooped out and delicately handled, learning how much pressure to put to shape up the foam brick. Also, siporex bricks used in construction was used and tools like ď€ ler, hammer and hexa blade was used to scoop out the volume out of the brick. Further, to give life to it, it was installed on the college campus by students to make it permanent.

ASSORTED Practical Executions Festivals are one of the key sources of energy. Theme based and traditional installations, lampshades and positive environment are the sources which can cater the occasion and enhance the campus. More or less like a thought, design and execution process, at this level it teaches material behaviour and time consumed to ď€ nish the job.
