Video Evidence in Football. Thierry Henry has added once again to the wonderful saloon bar conversations where all football injustices are discussed in a manner both heated and sincere. ‘The Hand of Frog’ was one red top’s description of the French striker’s hand ball which led to France’s undeserved qualification to the World Cup Finals over the cheated Irish. I remember Maradona’s Hand of God Incident and how much that hurt, so my sympathy goes out to all Irish supporters, but I also have participated in the on going conversation about the third goal in the 66 Final. Did it cross the line? Did it Change the course of the game? Even though this happened several years before I was born. The argument for goal line cameras, and TV judges for disputed or contentious decisions, plays into the hands of the big businesses that own football clubs, and pay players more in a week than our Prime Minister earns in a Year. It forgets about the fans who want value for money entertainment. I want to see games I can talk about in 20 or even 50 years time, and if its over a dodgy refs Decision all the better. I don’t want a sanitised game, built to keep the status quo for the Football Giants.
Get Set Club 85 Friday 20th November Callum, Sean Peter and Frazer make up this quite impressive band. They show all the Stage craft required to hold the audience’s attention and The Bass , guitars and drums are played with some great skill. The real let down here is the Vocals. With this sort of Pop Rock set it’s not required that the Vocal is the strongest or the most impressive , but it should be in tune most of the time and this wasn’t. I’m not saying shoot the singer, but maybe he needs to get back to basics, or pick up a few a tips on how to add to this otherwise entertaining performance. These guys have all the basic ingredients, for an Indie/ pop/ rock band, and They certainly have the knack of entertaining a crowd even as small as tonight's. All in all at this point in time they are a fun band but not yet the real deal. Catch their Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/getsetuk However beware of some of their gig claims as I can’t confirm these at the moment.
In Colour Club 85 Friday 20th November This 5 piece band travelled all the way down from Stafford for this gig,and to entertain such a poor turn out must have been very disappointing indeed. To there credit, they carried on like true professionals, with a set that moved the evening into a much heavier phase. Though no where near metal, it was the far side of pop rock, and carried all the signature signs of a group with a wide repertoire. Such as a varied pace of songs, building to a finale. The vocals were slightly buried into the back ground , but were in tune, and the interaction with the crowd was pleasant and made more novel by an accent rarely encountered in these parts of Hertfordshire. The 5 hour round trip for these guys , may well have caused them concerns about making the trip again, however, anyone who saw them would welcome them back again. These guys are not yet top 10 material, but if you get the opportunity they are definitely worth a look.
Arms of Atlas Club 85 Friday 20th November I’ve never heard a Backstreet Boys, cover taken to the verge of heavy metal before, but these guys do it, and do it well. They have a genuine boy band appeal to them as well, which some felt made this cover naff, however I thought of it as post ironic humour, especially as the rest of their set was original and tight, with great guitars and good solid vocals, although once again tonight they sounded a little buried. Was this a deliberate thing, or maybe I haven’t yet full recovered from this swine/ bird/ man flu thingy. Again great crowd pleasers, and this is a band I want to see again, And a band that I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of in the New Year.
Exit Avenue Club 85 Friday 20th November In the last issue, I reviewed their release ‘Sway’ and while complimentary I described them as a ‘Guilty Secret’. Well I take it back, I am officially outing myself as a fully fledged Exit Avenue Fan. A great pop rock set, with an incredible togetherness, and superb turn of pace. They know how to get (at this point a growing and swelling) crowd moving. The few covers they did were distinct enough to tell they were putting their own individuality into it, although some may say, this is another way of saying they make all songs sound a bit samey. My overall feeling is that this band are just brilliant, and are probably just one (by which I mean the right one) song away from finding Chart success. Is that song ‘Sway’? Probably not, but it’s a good B side.
Happy fluffy fortnight peoples! Well I’ve got her ,I’ve got my new fluffy puppy! I’m so in love hehe. She’s the cutest ‘fluffin’ thing I have right now lol its not been so easy finding the perfect name though....from Miss Kitty to Pixie to Lady and back to Miss Kitty and then Tinkerbell.....it is now officially PIXIE! So i now have 3 fluffy doggies....Britney, Buffy and Pixie.....what could be cuter? Oh and i also dyed my dog Britney pink this week! was so freaking adorable! until she licked it all off 10 mins later! As much as id love to talk about my doggies for all this page.....I’ve been told i have to mention 'important' things, or what not...lol

If the Fuzzy face event was anything like last time I’m pretty disappointed to miss out! It was quite awesome! Well there’s always next yr! lol
I’ve been out once this whole fortnight and that was just for a few drinks....well a few drinks planned.... I managed to get so intoxicated that I dont remember going to bed....not the first time and defo not the last but scary never the less! We Went for a few here in Letchworth then to ‘Que Pasa’ in Hitchin It was extremely quiet until me and my mates got there with THIER big mouths.....i was the quiet, well behaved one. Lol I ended up getting ice thrown at my face and cocktails all down me....not bad for a Sunday night. Also, how glad am i that Lloyd Daniels is out of the X-Factor! sad about the twins going, but now Im all for Joe! Let us know what gigs are coming up over the next few weeks and I'll love to come down to them! Peace out and live life fluffy and loud!!!!

Afternoon gigs can be a bit of a strange affair, and this one overall was no exception, aet to bright November afternoon, and very few people in attendance, is always a shame. This four piece though started the afternoon off with promise, thrashing guitars amd crashing drums gave an interesting and accomplished feel to this band, the only issue for me was the young lady singing. She is no doubt a good vocal, and proved this later on in the set, however the first couple of tunes seemed to be too low for her to pull off comfortably, but their track ‘Victim’ rectified this, I wonder if they are playing acquired material without adjusting it to their talents. My biggest issue really is their name, how many times do we see To Be Confirmed on flyers, meaning yet to organise anyone. I get the joke, but I don’t think it does them any favours
I’d seen this band a few months ago, and I must say they are better than I remembered. The vocalist has a clear strong voice, although on occasions this sometimes did descend into a squeal, akin to nails being dragged across a blackboard, something that should be watched, as overall this a very polished performance. There is good stage craft, and a nice rapport with the audience, ‘ No emos self harmed in the making of this song ‘ they quipped while introducing Catalyst. A slightly tired, Travis style cover of Britney Spears, is probably representative of this, band, talented and fun, but lacking the originality and freshness we hope for. I look forward to seeing them again though, as they seem to be growing all the time.
WHAT A WASTE!!!! ‌..only a handful of people here to see this incredibly skilful and exciting band. Enthusiatic and with great changes of mood and pace, these guys, played a relentless set despite the few people there to support. It may not take the same amount of nerve when the crowd is made up of friends and family, but it still takes some careful thought before the vocalist launches himself of the stage and stand eye to eye with the audience. He did this with great effect and to much appreciation. These guys are one to watch, find their website at www.scholarstheband.com and info on free music downloads
The Rogue Radio Victorian Ball, was again not as well attended as some have expected, but those that did go made up for the lack of numbers with gusto. Many dressed in top hat and tails, looking the epitome of a Victorian gentleman, others as Dickensian caricatures of urchins and cutpurse’s. Droome were first on with, if not a Victorian feel, certainly a surreal one, An infectious mixture of dark gothic tones and a strange but beguiling rendition of ‘ The Owl and the Pussycat’ added to the fun and often strangeness of the evening.
Lowki and Miss Twist visited the stage next to lift the evening into a modern set, and they were followed by Chaos Baby (review over page), amazingly their debut at Club 85, and the evening went on into the early hours with DJ Sets from Charlie Frame, who should be congratulated not only on this superbly presented evening with Matt Turner, but also on his newly acquired job with The Guardian newspaper. Rogue, present again later this month, and if this is a sample of the Standard then I fully recommend you make the crowd swell, you won’t be disappointed!!!
Anybody who has not yet seen Chaos:Baby will now have to wait until February as they take a well earned break, fronted by Laura this band were on their mischievous best. As well as another good airing ,of what now becoming local folklaw songs, with a hard punk attitude, there was offers of accepting sexual favours instead of payment for merchandise, a flash of ( brazier clad ) breast, and the launching of a shot glass ( all be it plastic for the ‘elf and safety’) into the crowd. This team play with outrageous fun and infectious enthusiasm, not for the narrow minded or over easily offended, but for any one with a semblance of a sense of humour or a life.
Another week where the internet is hailed as a hero and the vilified. Facebook and Bebo have been hailed as improving literacy across our youthful population while Google is accused of putting money before free access to information
Social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo, plus online blogging, could help improve children's writing skills, research has suggested. Half of children (49%) believe that writing is "boring", according to the National Literacy Trust's study. But those youngsters who spend time blogging enjoy writing more, it found, with almost six in 10 (57%) saying they like putting pen to paper, compared to two fifths (40%) of those who do not have a blog. The study, which questioned 3,001 pupils in England and Scotland aged nine to 16 via an online survey, examined how much young people enjoyed writing, what types of writing they tend to do and how good they think they are at it. The findings show that technology is boosting children's confidence in their writing skills.
Some six in 10 (61%) of those who have a blog and more than half (56%) of those with a social networking page, claim to be good or very good at writing. In comparison, just under half (47%) of those who do not use either of these mediums were likely to say the same thing. The study also reveals that pupils who write online are more likely to also write short stories, letters, song lyrics or a diary. In total, three quarters (75%) of those questioned said they write regularly, with more than half (56%) of youngsters saying they have a profile on a social networking site like Facebook or Bebo, while a quarter (24%) said that they have their own blog. Technology-based mediums are now among the most common form of writing, the study found . More than eight in 10 (82%) of young people write text message once a month, while over seven in 10 (73%) wrote instant messages online, and almost two thirds (63%) wrote on a social networking site.
Of non-technology based writing, 77% of those questioned wrote notes or answers in class or for homework at least once a month.
Jonathan Douglas, director of the National Literacy Trust, said: "The digital age often gets a bad press but the findings of this report demonstrate that social networking sites and blogs are linked to young people's more positive attitudes to writing.
tion sites by going through the search engine every time they wanted to read a story. Google senior business product manager Josh Cohen said the organisation recognised the "challenges" faced by media outlets that want to charge for their content. "Previously, each click from a user would be treated as free," he said. "Now we've updated the programme so that publishers can limit users to no more than five pages per day without registering or subscribing." Another option is that the search engine will include the headline and first few paragraphs of a story in a preview page, but users would then be asked to pay to view the rest of the content.
Google has bowed to pressure from newspaper publishers and agreed to let them limit the number of free news pages users can read per day.
But Mr Cohen warned that news organisations would have to accept the threat of being shunted down its rankings.
The internet search engine has said that publishers will be able to cap access to their subscription websites to five articles per day, after which they can be redirected to a payment screen.
"Paid content may not do as well as free options, but that is not a decision we make based on whether or not it's free," he said.
Its concessions follow claims from some media outlets that Google has profited from its links to online news pages.
Users have found that with Google's "first click free" programme they can gain unrestricted access to subscrip-
With Christmas festivities about to start the Government have released an Iphone app so you can count how much your drinking. I usually work out how much I’ve drunk by subtracting the money left in my pocket from the amount I took out...
People can download a mobile phone application to keep track of their festive drinking, the Department of Health has said. Public health minister Gillian Merron launched the "alcohol tracker", which is available from iTunes and www.nhs.uk. It allows drinkers to input how much they are consuming and view graphs of whether they are sticking to recommended units, which are three to four a day for a man and two to three for a woman. The application also helps people work out how many alcoholic units there are in a drink and get personalised feedback on their habits. Ms Merron said: "It is all too easy to lose track of how much you drink. "So as the festive parties start to build up, this innovative tool will help people keep tabs on their drinking - wherever they are. It's one of many ways the Government is helping people to understand how much they are drinking. "Sticking within the NHS recommended limits means you reduce the risk of serious conditions such as mouth cancer and strokes." Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware, said: "Efforts to help people keep track of how much they're drinking over the festive season and throughout the year are a good idea. "Trying to stick within the daily unit guidelines will help people avoid the January slump and the long term health implications associated with drinking too much alcohol." People with a standard mobile can access a units calculator by texting the word UNIT to 64746.
This Issue DJ Fee-Line, Reviewed a Club 85 Gig for us, Ghosts on Pegasus Bridge, Black Polaris, Textbook Tragedy and Arusha Accord. Would you like to be our next guest reviewer? Then drop me an E-mail at HitchinGigs@live.co.uk
Ghosts on Pegasus Bridge were the first band on. With two guitarists (one with a broken hand!) a bassist with a lovely singing voice, an energetic drummer and a lead singer with real presence this band warmed up over their short set. Black Polaris followed with an atmospheric, tight set. The drummer is fast and kept a good beat throughout. The band themselves have a good stage presence and really got the crowd involved. Throughout Black Polaris' set I could tell they have a real passion for the music they play, something I always notice. The riffs remind me of Machine Head, so if you like them, chances are you'll like Black Polaris. They finished with a nice collaboration with the lead singer of Kate is the Decoy to round off an intense set. Textbook tragedy were third on. These boys not only look the part but sound it too. With good group dynamics and every member being immensely talented I can see big things for this band. Hailing from Vancouver, Canada they have a huge fan base here in the U.K and I'm sure in other countries. Their set is heavy but with shots of clean vocals, is audible! Arusha Accord headlined with unfortunate amount of tech problems, they muscled on and had a challenging but good set. Although a few songs were hard to hear from where I was standing, I could see this band have a strong following and deserved to be headlining. Their image is strong and they sound slightly like ''Between the buried and me'' who I love, but with some slap-bass thrown in there to sound a little funkier. Overall a good night from Bob and Club 85. Fee-Line

The other day as I travelled on the tube to Camden to take part in a study on the effects of cannabis for the 3rd year psychology students at UCL I saw the female version of me. I understand you may’ve just had to read that again and that you may make a link between the study and my randomness but I wasn’t anything but sober at the time. I am fairly serious about what I saw as It took me quite by shock at the time but standing in front of me was this girl my age, exactly my height, brown eyes and red hair which is peculiar in itself because I have never seen a girl with exactly the same colour hair as me until that day, similar yes but not exactly the same. She was wearing a plain black shirt as I was with a leather jacket in the same style and colour as mine (dark brown not black with gold zips,) similar trainers (which is just plain odd because I would wear much better shoes if I was a woman) and her denim skirt was the same colour and style of my own blue jeans and frayed around the bottom just the same and it wasn’t just the clothes but her facial features and her stance as well, whilst obviously her features very much more feminine than my own there were some serious traits going on between us. We both had small sharp eyes and good high cheekbones a lack of freckles normally associated with our hair and skin tone and unless she was wearing silk underwear there really couldn’t be more similarities in the way we dressed. Now I know this could just be an extension of that horrible moment where you realise you’re wearing the same top as someone else at a party but this was more than that, this was an entire outfit and looking at her face I realised that she actually looked more like me than anyone in my entire family, more so than any of my cousins or my brother and I was stunned to say the least. I know I’m probably opening myself up to some serious mickey taking even by writing this but I simply don’t care because this was too incredible not to share. I know this all sounds like a series of lame coincidences which is what I thought it was at first but then after an astounding number of things had already grabbed my attention I noticed that she had mirrored my body language exactly as she had come onto the tube (which always makes me uncomfortable) and I could hear the drum and bass from my headphones phasing in and out with the spill from hers and realised she was listening to the same style of music as me and that she had a gleaming metal chain running along the right hand side of her skirt, I reached down instinctively and found that this was the one day in about a fortnight I hadn’t worn mine - damn this was getting a little weird. To have someone walk onto an empty tube and pick the space opposite you and to feel like you are looking into a mirrored world is just mind-blowing especially when she is already staring right at you by the time you notice her! I started thinking about an episode of Red Dwarf where they travel to a parallel dimension where everything is the same except that their history and society has been dominated by
women instead of men. Nellie Armstrong landing on the moon and the works by the famous English playwright Wilma Shakespeare. I couldn’t help but wonder if she was perhaps thinking of the same episode and if we would get on and have similar interests? would it turn out we liked exactly the same bands and films? Had the same dreams to travel California and Australia? Perhaps she could also quote every line of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and writes for music magazines in her spare time… Perhaps I can find her blog about when she saw the male version of herself on a tube towards Warren Street online somewhere? maybe that’s taking things a bit too far. I wondered if we had been twins separated at birth which would explain why I look like no one in my own family? I wondered if it was vain of me to think that she was cute? I hope not because she was attractive in such an odd way and that’s the bit I find unsettling and its also glaringly obvious that if this was the case then I would clearly look better as a woman! This was all becoming far too much for a simple tube journey. I wondered if I was on a reality TV program about to be set up for something not quite hilarious? But dismissed this idea fairly quickly. I felt so bad then just as I do typing this now for not summoning up the fortitude to talk to her but what would I’ve said? Something casual perhaps like “I like your jacket” subtly pointing out that it was almost exactly the same as my own and then moving on to the fact our hair was the same colour and we were listening to similar music. Should I’ve just pointed out the apparent coincidences and get a conversation flowing until I could mention the fact we were seemingly separated at birth? Perhaps not but it would’ve been a damn sight better than simply waltzing up to her and exclaiming “You look like the female version of me!” And in my moment of indecision about my method she was gone and as she turned right out of Warren Street station towards McDonalds she was lost again as suddenly as she’d been discovered. I wish I could’ve seen her walk into McDonalds or light a cigarette - anything that would’ve allowed me to think that she wasn’t really like me but she didn’t and my fascination kept its shining light. My umming and ahhing about whether she would take offence or be startled or not seems so pointless given the way she was also looking at me and smirking with the right side of her mouth as I do but I guess I’ll never know. I’m not really one for morals but I think if this story had one it would simply be ‘carpe diem’ to seize the day and the moment because even if she had thought my realisation was the strangest thing ever (which I doubt, there are much stranger things on the London underground) then she would’ve been gone again in an instant and I wouldn’t of cared in fact I am far more haunted by the fact I didn’t say anything and missed an opportunity for a funny conversation than by anything she could’ve possibly said. Perhaps she was thinking it too and was equal shy about mentioning it? Just like me. I hope you enjoy these rants, I make no apologies or explanations for them and it is my simplest hope that by laying out the things that go through my mind day to day we can connect over them and find similarities and therefore a way to make each of our individual lives easier simply by knowing that whatever the world throws at us we do not go through it alone.

It’s always a privilege to receive an CD to review, usually from young local bands after a bit of exposure or some feed back. In this case we have a man who has been playing for some considerable time, and has kindly sent us a copy of ‘Along The Way’ so we can let you know about it. More information on Jonathan can be found at www.rootsnroll.co.uk
This album is a real nostalgic piece.
Machu Pichu.
Reminiscent of Late sixties and early seventies folksy acoustic sets. Wonderful , Male and female harmonies, with lyrics that are paradoxical, and sometimes challenging, however the sentiment is always clear.
That’s not as disparaging as it first sounds, this is a quality album, with Variety enough within its tightly defined boundaries to give those of you who find pleasure in the sounds of the like of Simon and Garfunkle, a fresh sound to hear.
The tunes edge towards haunting, but are not in any way intrusive, and would make a great album to play when the throng have left your party leaving you and a few close friends to inspect the debris, and enjoy the quieter beer.
It could also appeal those looking for something more rooted to follow on their Jose Gonzales or Jack Johnson discoveries.
As an album I really like it, and think it will come off my shelf quite a few times in the next few months. However if Along the Path ( as the name suggests) is actually an anthology of the journey Jonathan has taken , then his path seems to have been a fairly straight one, with no major detours . More Milton Keynes
All in all a very pleasant album, and one I’m sure will find itself a niche if not a cult following.
Kerrie-Ann Franklin is a keen gig goer, And supporter of the band Room 94. Here she explains why she thinks we should all go and see them when we get the opportunity. I’ve had a quick Listen and agree that these guys are worth a look, Do you have a band you think is worth letting people know about ? Email us on Hitchingigs@live.co.uk Room 94 are a band based in Hertfordshire. They consist of: Kieran (vocals and guitar), Kit (vocals and bass), Dean (vocals and drums) and George (vocals and guitar). The guys are so lovely and they love hanging out with all their fans whenever they come to gigs. So far in their band history the band have played with DissolvedIN, The Broadcast, Koopa, Twenty Twenty and DoubleA. Room 94 had their single release at the Camden Barfly on the 12th August. It was an awesome gig where the guys sang and danced whilst they performed. The best way to for me to describe their music is a blend of rock and pop. They make music which everyone will enjoy listening and dancing to. Some of their songs which I think everyone should check out are: ‘We Feel like Royalty’, ‘Head to Toes’, ‘Tell Me a Secret’ and ‘Alright Tonight’. A Room 94 song everyone should check out on YouTube is ‘No Sleep’ which features Kieran and Deans brother Sean, who is also a member of the band Saving Aimee. ‘No Sleep’ features a dance which is easy enough for everyone to learn so they can show the guys their dance moves at Room 94 gigs. In the month of December Room 94 have two gigs coming up. The first is on the 12th December at the O2 Academy 3 in Birmingham. The support band will be Octane Ok. The second is on the 20th December at the Camden Barfly in London. The support bands will be Electric Skyline and Octane Ok. Tickets for both these gigs can be bought from their MySpace page which is www.myspace.com/room94. Tickets will only cost around £6 so buy one as a Christmas present for a friend. Also, if you buy a ticket for Room 94’s Birmingham gig then you will receive a free limited edition signed Christmas postcard from the band. Room 94 also have a tour coming up in February next year. Support bands for this tour include Octane Ok, The Return and Exit Avenue. They will be travelling to various places including Potters Bar, London and Sheffield. Tickets can be bought from www.room94.co.uk/tour and they cost £5.50 plus postage and packing. Come check out the guys at a venue near you soon because they love meeting new people and gaining new fans of their music.
Those of you have been following the Facebook comments know we have heard on the grapevine something of immense value. Before we go on please be assured that before we print these we check with as many sources as possible Over the last week or so since we announced we had an important announcement, I’ve had countless numbers of emails guessing what it could possibly. Have Aghast been signed, has Mark rejoined Scar My Eyes, are Model Horror really going to stay together? All of which may well happen, but its not the message we’ve been asked to spread. With Christmas approaching fast we all have plans for December , so many that it seems that there just aren’t enough days in the month or enough pounds in the bank.
This usually means January is a slow and often bleak time for those of us used to going out most weekends, until we receive January’s Paycheque. Well here’s forewarning, The Kerrang tour with My Passion, And Young Guns kicks off in earnest on the 22nd of January, But a source very close to the band inform me that there is a secret warm up gig before hand, and its here in Hitchin. For Venue, time and dates confirmation make sure you sign up to our newsletter (subscribe on our home page) . But our best information tells us it’ll be an all ages gig on the 19th of January at Club 85
In the second of her guest articles, Kerry-Ann Franklin explains why she is looking forward to attending Remix on the 19th Of The bands I know performing at the Remix on December 19th for the Christmas party are The Broadcast and Jump the Lights. The Broadcast are a pop/rock band from Hitchin/Luton. Jump the Lights are a pop/rock band from Hertfordshire. The Broadcast have played with bands such as The Mission District, My Passion and Saving Aimee. Whereas, Jump the Lights has played with bands such as The Mission District, Snakes Hate Fire and The Broadcast. These are the two bands I want to see most at this gig because I love their music and they are really lovely guys to speak to. I am looking forward to this gig because it allows you to chill out listening to music before the festive period. However, the gig also contains two bands that I love performing music that I love. Other people should come to this gig because The Broadcast and Jump the Lights contain awesome and friendly guys. Everyone will love their music as well because it is music you can dance and sing along to. The best song by the Broadcast in my opinion is ‘Party Party’ because it is a really dancy song with a catchy chorus. Also, the best song in my opinion by Jump the Lights is ‘Tick Tock’ because the chorus is so catchy and Jonni’s (the lead singer) dance moves are really easy to copy and fit with the song perfectly. However, you will be able to dance along to all the songs by both bands. Although the other bands performing at this gig are Panda Police, Blue Root Zoots and Efferus. Who’s hot and who’s not? They are all such lovely guys that I am not going to give one answer for that question. To make it easier I am going to say that they are all hot because I’m not singling out one single person. If you want to check out the Broadcast and Jump the Lights for yourself then get to the Remix on Saturday 19th December. Tickets cost £3.50 in advance or £5 on the day at the door. The gig starts around 5.30pm and finishes around 9.30pm. So treat yourself before Christmas and come down to check out these awesome bands
