Restaurant Review

There would seem to be a growing problem, I suspect it is not only in this area, of young people not being allowed into venues because they are under 18 and therefore not legally allowed to purchase or consume alcohol. It is ironic, because it is often the case that members of the bands are themselves underage, thus encouraging underage friends to come and see them play. The problem is that young people are turning up at venues hoping to get past security on the door, but when they do not they are hanging around in the streets outside, often sitting on the pavement consuming alcohol ! This is I’m sure you would agree, not an acceptable situation and steps need to be taken to either accommodate these young people or at the very least prevent them from hanging around and potentially putting themselves in danger. Some Landlords do of course make efforts, the system of hand stamping is still used, whereby a red stamp for underage gig goers and a black stamp for over 18s is applied to the back of the hand on entry to the venue. This form of security can be confirmed by both the Doorman and the Barman, so if it can work in one venue why not in others ? The law is so woolly on this issue and the Police have tried to help me sort this out, but basically it is at the discretion of the Landlord to allow young people on to the premises. It is his license — his choice. However, there is a section of the law which states, if you are 16 and have a written work contract, or proof of attending a legitimate training scheme, you may go into licensed premises, but you must stay away from the bar. Also, if a party of 16 year olds is accompanied by a person over 18, that is also considered sufficient under the law and you may enter the licensed premises, but again you must stay away from the bar. At the end of the day, the law is one thing and the Landlord is quite another. The Landlord holds all the cards and he can refuse entry to anyone he chooses, not just underage drinkers. Perhaps it would be an idea to arrange your admittance to the venue with the Landlord prior to the event and not just show up on masse on the night ? Your thoughts please

I have to admit to a certain amount of trepidation about writing this review Labcoat and Mac, Shirabon and Monster Monster, all appeared at the same gig on the same night at Club 85 and quite frankly, it was really strange. The crowd was very sparse, in fact it was really only friends and family of the Artists and us of course. I find it quite difficult to think of this entertainment as being music. I spoke to Mr Labcoat after the gig, Mac was safely in his case and he assures me that all the tunes are original compositions, but I found it difficult to differentiate between any of these “pieces of music” and old style turntable mix sets or old style techno. The tunes are written and styled on a laptop and the instruments are duplicated by pre programmed software. I use the word instruments very loosely, because this is really an amalgamation of computer generated sounds and therefore I personally cannot truly recognise it as music, especially not at a live gig venue. In a nightclub as late night dance music, great ! but I do not feel this will ever be a medium of entertainment that will draw crowds who appreciate live music. Having said all that, the guys who write and perform in this medium, are keen, intelligent. lively guys, who are totally committed to their art and good luck to them. The music scene is always better for new ideas and talent and this is for sure, certainly all of that. My apologies if I missed the point, it may be that I just didn’t get it ! However, I stand by my assessment, this is not a style of music that suits live music venues, as it simply is not live music. Perhaps a lively pub venue would be better or a nightclub , I’m sure you will let me know your thoughts. hitchingigs@live.co.uk

Redmaxx are a well established band who have been together for about ten tears, but they have not played live for about two years, due to family commitments.

They have been in the studio, however, recording their new album, Complain Rock and tonight they got together with old friends, colleagues, family and hopefully new friends, to celebrate the release.

Redmaxx had themselves a great reunion night, obviously thoroughly enjoying being back on stage and this transferred to the crowd. We all had a great time.

I have listened to the album and it is uncanny how close the live and studio performances are. The band really does translate well to the stage.

They have no immediate plans to hit the live circuit, as Simon, their very gorgeous drummer, is getting married shortly. Sorry ladies !

Simon did actually make it into my top ten drummers, really nice work mate !

If you want to know more about the band you can of course find them on Www.myspace.com/redmaxx

Good luck with the nuptials Simon and thank you all for a great party.

I look forward to seeing you all again soon

I have a copy of the album to give away, which is excellent, your question is What is the title of the fourth tune on the album Answers to hitchingigs@live.co.uk Before 6pm September 10 2009 www.myspace.com/redmaxx

Dear Sexy Nanna I am a 25 year old man and I live with a 35 year old woman with three kids. We also have a child together. I am always being left with the four children while she has a great social life with her mates. I love spending time with my son, but she won’t let me have time with him on my own, she says I have to take the whole brood or nothing. I keep telling her they are her kids not mine, but she says I can’t have one without the thers. What should I do ? Bernie

Dear Bernie You don’t say how long you have been living with this lady, or if there are other fathers involved. It is easy to see from your letter that the sparkle has gone from your relationship and you are feeling totally taken for granted. You are of course entitled to see your son on his own and if she disagrees you should consult a Family Court Solicitor and find out your rights. Do not let her use you as unpaid childcare, stand up for yourself and your son. It may be time to think of getting your own place where you can find some peace and be able to have quality time with your boy. Social Services should be able to advise.

Dear Sexy Nanna I have found some nude pictures of my daughter in her bedroom. I was not looking for them, but found them when putting away laundry. I don’t know who took them and I don’t know how to approach her about this. She is nineteen and therefore an adult, but don’t tell me to respect her privacy as I am worried sick ! I am divorced so cannot discuss this with my ex husband, what should I do ? Marianne

Dear Sexy Nanna My boyfriend has recently put on quite a bit of weight and so I am finding him less attractive. He’s a great bloke, lots of fun and all that, but it has already slowed down his libido, if you get me. I have tried to approach the subject with him, but he doesn’t take me seriously. He says he is happy and it’s partly my fault because I make him happy ! He says he is not worried about anything, so it’s not that, what do you think ? Maggie

Dear Maggie I suppose the PC thing for me to say would be you must love Dear Marianne him whatever, but I do know It doesn’t say much for your relationship with your daughter what you mean. Aries You must feel as though you have taken a luck potion, as everything you do turns out to be absolutely the right thing. Beware of over confidence, but you will be very lucky soon, so long as you believe in yourself.

Leo There is a time and a place for everything and you like everything to be in place. You feel that you have put something out of place, however, and you are about to apologise. Are yon sure you did something wrong ?

Sagittarius You feel your life has no Flavour, not enough sugar ? or just too much salt? Something in your life is more right than you realise. You need to re-arrange your time so that you can become more aware of it.

Taurus You are feeling almost telepathic at the moment, you can tell what people are going to say and do before they know themselves. Double check your assumptions, you might not always be on the button.

Virgo What goes around comes around, is a maxim you have al3ways believed and you are about to be proved right. Don’t forget though that just because something feels or looks wrong, doesn’t mean it is. Be wary.

Capricorn You are always drawn towards people who you think have lots in common with you. Maybe it’s time for you to consider that just because people are different does not mean that you could not relate to them, if you can find it in your heart to try.

Gemini You need to slow down and take some time to enjoy the world around you. There is danger of life passing you by, you are working too hard, it’s time to relax and put your feet up ! Treat yourself, you deserve it !

Libra You are continually drawn to people who are no good for you. Why is this ? It is a very destructive trait. Soon an old face will come back from your past and you should be ready to welcome it with open arms, it will do you good.

Aquarius You are about to get lots of praise and admiration, whether you want it or not ! You will not like where it comes from, but you might enjoy it if you give yourself a chance. What do you think ?

Cancer You are surrounded by people of intelligence and insight, but you are choosing to ignore their help and advice. Why ? No man is an island, we all need help from time to time. Let you friends help you, they think a lot of you.

Scorpio There is a situation in your life and you are awaiting the outcome with baited breath. In fact you are trying to steer matters to your own sense of conclusion. Do not interfere, it is not necessary, let others make up their own minds.

Pisces You have an interest in common with someone who is a complete opposite character to you. If you can find out who this person is, you may both achieve a long desired mutual ambition. Good Luck !

The following pages are dedicated to the bands who performed at Club 85 on Friday August 21st Glass Artery Divine Chaos Terrathorn Edge of Reason (the) A really good night ! Opening this extravaganza were Edge of Reason, who immediately launched their set with an almighty crash of guitars, banging drums and growling, raucous vocals. Brilliant, just the start you want on an evening like this. However, the overall effect of all this banging and crashing was confusing, it didn’t seem like they were all on the same page. One had the feeling that they were more about the noise than the actual musical content and there was a definite lack of co-ordination about throughout their performance. We all appreciate that hard/heavy metal must be that, but I struggled to find any semblance of composition from these guys and at times it was simply a cacophony of noise. The levels all seemed too high and the band seemed to be competing with each other rather than giving a united performance. I did not get the feeling of angst, merely a band trying to be hard rock, but badly missing the point ! It’s a pity, because they are a nice looking, very pleasant bunch of lads, but their music needs work. They are not nearly tight enough, the drummer is not up to my personal standard ( you know how I love a good drummer ) and frankly I found the bass a tad boring. Their saving grace may be their lead guitar, who showed promise, but very little inspiration. Edge of Reason are a good opening band, but in my view nothing more. They were loud, repetitive and lacked imagination. Sorry guys, as it used to say on my school report card, could do better, must try harder !

Terrathorn are a band from Southampton, who travelled to be with us tonight and I for one am delighted that they did. A fabulous opening to their set, slow, deliberate, loud bursts allowing us to hear all the instruments and steadily gathering us up into a frenzy as the vocal joined in and transported the crowd with heavy, banging, but definitely tuneful lyrics. James takes vocal and when I say that, I really do mean he takes them all over the room. He leaps on and off and all over the stage and really entertains us all with his excellent growling tones and relentless activities. This band play like a well oiled machine, each seeming to be telepathically linked to his comrades. The drummer is among the best I have seen, very competent and defo does a great job of holding the whole thing together. He has a talent for reducing the pace of the tunes and then building everything to a frenzy, the others follow his lead perfectly. These guys are showmen and what a difference it makes to see a show, not just a performance. The three guitars are lined across the front of the stage and look almost choreographed, they obviously have dedication to their art and it shows. James, very politely, told the crowd they had worried about following the previous band, because their set had been fantastic, but these guys need never worry about following anyone, they are in a class of their own ! Synchronised guitars, fab drums, excellent vocals, trust me, you don’t need anything else ! I loved them, can you tell ?

This is exactly what you expect to see when you go to a heavy metal gig. Four scary looking, thuggish looking type guys, who know their trade like the back of their hand. Not only that, they have a bass player with long blonde hair ( he’s gorgeous ) and hurrah, here comes the great news, a killer drummer ! These guys own the stage, they brook no opposition, in their attitude, performance and skill as musicians. The vocals are of course rip your ears off raucous, but with this crew it works, I would have expected nothing less. They have loads of expression, loads of angst and convey all of these emotions directly to your ear holes !. The killer drummer, gives no time to relax during or between tunes, he launches the band from one song to the next with no mercy, that force of drumming is just sexy and he is ! These guys took my breath away, they are heavy, uplifting, exiting, sweaty and sexy. There were some great changes in pace throughout the set and great guitar solos. They are undeniably all talented in their own right, but they come together to create the most highly polished metal I have seen ( see what I did there ? ) It never ceases to amaze me that the scary image heavy metal bands can project ( and Divine Chaos is certainly no exception ) is so at odds with how they really are ! These chaps were so helpful and lovely and polite, they made me feel all fluffy ! But make no mistake, there is no fluffiness when they are on stage ! I enjoyed the show and I enjoyed talking to them afterwards, especially Ben, thanks love, it was great to meet you all.

Headlining for us tonight, Glass Artery, who opened with a much more orchestrated sound. Very tight very disciplined, their music is composed of many changes of pace and beat. There are no hair tossing antics with this band, they are a professional looking band who are here to put on a show. I don’t know if the band had trouble with their sound check, but, my only criticism would be that everyone was drowned out by the drums. They were fantastic, by the way. The guitars held their own to a certain extent, but the vocal was almost indiscernible, pity. Anyhoo, these things happen in show business and can’t always be helped. I don’t want to dwell on the negative, because this band are extremely good and well worth a listen if you get the chance. I’m not too sure actually, that I would call this band heavy metal, they were more punk rock to me. They were certainly not the heaviest band of the evening, although the heaviness did increase a little as the set went on. In any case, they were certainly the most commercial band of the evening and it would not surprise me at all if they are snapped up in the near future, if they have not been already. The crowd loved them and joined in emphatically. Their show included a guitar performance by their lead guitar, whilst lying on the floor and a drum duet by the singer and the drummer. This is a good looking, highly polished band of obvious musical talent. Their writing is superb, varied, interesting and imaginative, they deserve to go far and I’m sure they will.

QR CODES What and Where Are They? 15 years ago QR codes were developed by Denso a Japenese company to identify car parts. Now in Japan they have been widely used as real world hyperlinks for phones and other devices for marketing and I information. You may have seen them on Pepsi bottles, or the odd one in a newspaper or magazine. Many phones have Bar Code Reader Apps which will allow you to convert the code into something meaningful. In the four pictures to the right the

bottom left two contain codes especially for you. If you have a modern Nokia or Samsung phone you should have a Barcode reader under your accessories. Simply activate it, open your camera lens and point it at the screen to see the links and messages. The top picture shows how lots of information can be sent over a far distance by situating a QR code on top of a building and the last picture is to show QR codes aren't just for geeks. Let us know where you spot them‌ they are about!!!!!!!!!!!

This band is heavy, heavy punk metal, played by musicians who really are musicians, they are all very talented men in their own right. However, one got the very distinct feeling that their performance is strictly for themselves, they really don’t seem to give a rat’s hat whether anyone else likes it or not ! Strange, because if the sound levels had been right, I think they would have been very, very good indeed. The vocals were far too low, I’m told this is by choice, in my opinion a bad one ! Anyhoo, they were giving away albums and I took one to hear the recorded version of them and they are really very good. Come on boys, let everyone hear you properly, you really do have something to contribute !

I loved this band, they took me back in time to the days of flowers in the hair and Woodstock and Patchouli oil. Very reminiscent of Lindisfarne I thought. They have a double bass, a mandolin, keyboards as well as the lead guitar and drums, excellent ! This band would not appeal to the teenage ear, I wouldn’t have thought, but everyone on the night found them very enjoyable. Their music is very folksy, sometimes bluesy and sometimes a bit of skiffle ! ( you can google that ) A talented band of musicians, nothing very innovative but thoroughly enjoyable.

DJ Tim ended the night for us excellently. He played lots of old tunes and had everyone up dancing and generally being mad ! In respect of the whole evening being a bit old school and retrospective, he played a blinder. I’d like to see more of Tim Cookie, we spoke to him for a while after the gig and he is indeed a cookie ! Great sense of fun, enjoys his work and generally promotes a sense of happiness. My thanks to him for completing a great night, taking us all back in time and giving us all a good laugh. Hope to see him again soon.

Kerchoonz K Box The K –Box is about the size of a Mobile phone and connect to your MP3 through a USB adapter This box uses Audio Gel Technology to turn any surface into a speaker. Place it on a table or kitchen counter and the sounds start blaring out. The quality of the sound depends on exactly which surface you place the K box on. But does offer the opportunity

for you to share your favourite tunes in a public or a different setting without carrying around bulky speakers. With 20 hrs worth of battery life this unit can probably outlast your MP3 player time wise. At an expected cost of just over £50 it shouldn’t be out of the reach of anyone who really wants it.

Eco Friendly or Eco Fraud? I’m all for greener living, recycling where we can and helping keep our planet habitable

This is not just a large MP3 player, it has 2 audio channels to allow you to hear two tracks at once and with several functions to allow you to mix, fade in and beat match. For novices there is a an automatic beat matching function.

I just worry sometimes we are being taken for a ride, this ‘eco friendly’ I pod dock still contains all the electronics required for it to work, including a plastic housing for the connector itself. It still has two fully operational speakers, however, its all been put into a log. ( wooden not captain’s ! ) I actually think it looks quite cool, and wouldn’t mind one myself, I just don’t fully understand how this makes it eco friendly or why they think we would not question it. Price to be announced

It is claimed it has the full versatility of a mixer deck, and can be plugged into any amp system to provide high quality replay. So if you are not a purist Vinyl DJ and fed up carrying heavy loads this may be for you

Good friends of ours, Vanilla Nightmare have kindly given us a copy of their new album to review and then pass on to one of you as a competition prize. Regular readers of this magazine will remember that we were invited to watch the making of the DVD, which accompanies Lover, the first track on the album. Vanilla Nightmare appeared alongside RedMaxx last Saturday and performed Lover live, we never actually got to Hear it all the way through when the DVD was being shot, but It was well worth waiting for.

COMPETITION We have a copy of the album to give away, your question is What is the title of track 6 on the album ? Answers to hitchingigs@live.co.uk Closing Date September 12th 2009 6pm

Vanilla Nightmare are great personalities, they are not only talented musicians, but very funny guys. The lead singer, Mark, reminds me of Jarvis Cocker, to look at, but he is nicer and much more talented ! Budge plays a mean base guitar and gives out hangover cure advice, ( nibble on a slice of corned beef apparently ! ) On drums we have Chris, excellent banging drummer and very cute too ladies ! Synthesiser and other funny noises are provided by Benny and of course his interim gags and general piss taking of the rest of the band is hysterical. This band are commercial in the sense that it’s only a matter of time before you will all want to be buying their music. They are original and the album is so original I can’t stop listening to it. It will remind you different styles of punk rock, but at the same time impress you with it’s originality. The lyrics are just superb, what imagination and style. You know how it is when you hear tracks that get into your head straight away and you have to play them over and over till you know them, this is one of those albums. There is never a dull moment and I can’t wait to see them again and sing along ! What a saddo you may say, but no, these are tunes worth learning ! Good luck guys. I hope you go all the way !

The Longest Players To be honest, during the first three tracks these guys played, I thought I had made a terrible mistake in even making the effort to come out. Fortunately as time went on, I was proved wrong. In fact, I would go as far as to say we have made a discovery tonight. The vocal in this band is so unique that I am going to make the claim to fame that I found him before any of you ! He is a tenor, no that’s not what he costs, he is individual and can sing as sweetly as you like and throw in the raucous melodies that you all love on demand. He is a find ! This band needs to get into a studio and record their sound properly. It’s all very well thinking that you know the sound you want to achieve, but getting there takes expert knowledge. They have all the basic requirements, with the added bonus of a vocalist who does not realise how good he is ! I cannot wait for the first real tracks they lay down. Their drummer, Joss, is really good, but a tad too loud and of course this can be rectified with practice. Their lead guitar is too reticent, but really good when he lets himself go. The bass guitar is solid throughout, but in my view could take his eye off the drums now and then and take the lead a little more. All in all they have the makings of a great band, but need to find the individual confidence in themselves to come together in greatness. They are playing Breastival, we shall see !

I have to control myself whilst writing this column, because all I want to do is gush on about how very marvellous this band is. When they came on stage I immediately thought of a young Marc Bolan, because the lead vocal/guitarist, Andy, has that look about him, all big hair and glitter. However, he started to play and instantly we were thinking Hendrix. This young man is a real talent and lists Brian May among his influences. I think he’s far better than Brian May already and only time will tell. Joe is on drums and whilst I would not say he is the best I have ever heard, he has the potential to be great. It’s only a matter of time, dedication and rehearsal, he has all the basic ingredients. Bass guitar is taken by Matt and taken very well, with a class that a lot of base players could learn from. Solar Drone have only been together a few months and in sometimes it shows, but the overall potential for greatness is to my mind blatantly obvious. They have a presence on stage, you have a sense of excitement before they even play a note and given that I saw them during one of the most poorly organised gigs I have ever attended, that is no mean feat. Not only did they play their own set, they filled in for a band who did not turn up. Their writing is brilliant and they even had the balls to perform an instrumental, not easy as I’m sure you know and it was stunning. The piece fully showcased all the individual talents of the band and it was undeniably impressive. We need to see more of these guys, they need experience and exposure and it can only lead to bigger and better performances. So who is going to take these boys to fame and fortune ? If you want to be put in touch please Email me at Hitchingigs@live.uk I will of course let you all know when their next gig is confirmed and we'll all go and support them — then we can say we knew them when……….

COCO BEFORE Letchworth 12A

A beautiful Italian Restaurant situated literally in the middle of Hitchin Town Centre. Convenient for shopping trip lunches, ideal for romantic evening meals or a great place to get together with lots of friends and sample some Italian hospitality. The service is fast and friendly, the food is delicious and the overall ambience, whether it be night or day, is warm and welcoming. The menu is varied, and not expensive and should cater to all tastes. All in all a great dining experience and one which I hope to repeat very soon. Bon Appetite !
