Back in the Saddle at 72 Linda Priboth of Parker, Illinois rode her horse Dolce out of the hunter ring as Reserve Champion in the Adult Hunters during Week II. Their success was celebrated, but the real story is how Priboth and the 16-year-old Hanoverian mare found each other. The story, however, goes back even further than Dolce’s entrance into Priboth’s life. Priboth, a sprightly 72-year-old rider, is the mother of Colorado trainer Laurie Priboth Jueneman of Snowfield Farm and didn’t find her place in the
Week VI
By Lindsay Yandon led Priboth to the show ring where she began competing in the Adult Amateur Hunter division. In 2008, Priboth was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and began intensive treatment. The treatment sent her illness into remission, but Priboth still made the decision to stop showing. “She made a deal with my family that she would go back to casual riding and no longer compete,” said Jueneman. Cue Dolce. In December of 2013, cancer reentered the lives of Jueneman and Priboth as one of Jueneman’s clients, Dory, passed away from the disease. “I had promised Dory that I would care for her horses for the rest of their lives,” Said Jueneman. “And that is when mom started taking lessons on one of them – Dolce.” After another family discussion earlier this year, Priboth decided to dust off her show coat and bring Dolce to Thermal. “They were an instant match,” said Jueneman. “I could see a confidence in her [Priboth] when she was riding Dolce that I haven’t ever seen before.”

saddle until she was 45. Ever the dedicated horse show mom, she groomed, mucked, trailered and braided for her daughter before Jueneman left for college. Not wanting to sell their horses, she started riding them herself. “She got very serious about her riding and fell in love with it,” said Jueneman. Love soon
Sixteen-year-old Hannah Von Heidegger was all smiles on Sunday afternoon. She and E-Unanime De La Haie won the $10,000 Junior/AmateurOwner High Jumper Classic, presented by Bayer’s Legend, but also made a splash in the Strongid® C 2X™ Grand Prix Stadium. Before Von Heidegger earned her fair share of the spotlight in the $50,000 Horze Equestrian Grand Prix, she piloted Monarch International’s E-Unanime De la Haie with hopes to qualify for the Bayer’s Legend® (hyaluronate sodium) (Continued on page 4)
The calm and collected Priboth was unhinged with excitement after her success in Thermal. “It was the highlight of my riding career to win this on a very special horse,” she said. “We know Dory was watching.” Despite show-ring glory coming later in life, Priboth admits that she will forever be a horsewoman, riding multiple horses and filling her days with barn chores. Most importantly, however, she’s just plain proud to be Dolce’s new partner.

Riders to Watch: Katie Cook
by Lindsay Yandon
Read each week for an insider’s look at who we think will be the top West Coast contenders for the HITS Championship at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York September 3-7. KC: Blessed! I owe so much gratitude to so many people. John [Bragg] has done so much for me and allowed me to ride some amazing horses. The owners who let me ride their horses are the reason that I am where I am. Lastly, I am blessed that my husband supports this passion of mine. HNW: What are you doing when you aren’t in the saddle? KC: Professionally, I am a sales representative for Equitex stall drapes and accessories. I love my job because it involves horses and is flexible enough that I get to focus on my kids. It’s really hard to balance family and competing, but I’m afraid that if I let it go now, it will be really hard to find my way back. You never know where life is going to take you, so I am going to hang on to what I have now for as long as I can.

Katie Cook’s entrance into the horse world was a casual one. She grew up with horses in her backyard and was a proud member of her local 4-H club. Today, Cook, an amateur, rides with acclaimed West Coast trainer John Bragg at Bridgeport Farms in San Juan Capistrano, California. Despite not having a mount to call her own, Cook and her catch rides have made a splash at this year’s HITS Desert Circuit. Beginning with Capital Challenge in 2013, Cook decided to take her competitive riding to a more serious level and committed to showing the duration of the HITS Desert Circuit. Cook began turning heads with a pinto gelding named Symphony after winning the $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix twice in a row. That streak grew to three when she jumped Pamela Moellenhoff ’s Santos to the blue during Week III. Cook’s ride invitations soon expanded and she quickly became the rider to watch during West Coast qualifying for the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. “This is a big deal,” exclaimed Cook in reaction to the success she has had during the winter circuit. “I never imagined that things would go this way for me this year – I was just happy to be able to be in the saddle.”
HNW: What is the one piece of riding apparel that you couldn’t live without? KC: My boots – they’re my lucky boots. They were custom made for a friend of mine who never got to wear them. She passed away unexpectedly and I started to wear them. Since I began showing in them I have been Champion or won more classes than ever before – I have had the best year ever in these boots. Whenever I put them on, I think of her. Luck is something Cook admits she has experienced a lot of in the last few months. “I’m lucky to ride the horses I ride, I’m lucky people have given me the opportunities they have and I’m lucky to find eight distances every day for weeks in a row,” she joked. “But honestly, it’s so much more than winning ribbons – I live for the moments when I am in the saddle and don’t have to think about anything else except riding.” Cook, even with her humble attitude, has big plans for 2014. Qualifying and heading east for the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final tops the list, while she also hopes to stay at HITS-on-the-Hudson for the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals, making a nostalgic return to her equitation roots. While Cook admits that she takes her amateur riding career one day at a time, her daughter Charlotte is “horse-obsessed”, so Cook may be not only be a rider, but a horse show mom before she knows it.
Here’s a closer look at Katie Cook: HNW: How did you get your start in the show ring? KC: I took my first jumping lesson when I was 12 and soon after my trainer sent me to ride with the Karazissis’ at Far West Farm. During my last years as a junior, I competed in the equitation ring and did the medal classes. During college, I took a break from riding and when I graduated, I started riding whatever extra horses I could find in Orange County. HNW: What brought you back to the show ring? KC: After I had my first child – Cody, who is now four – I wanted to find a local barn and that’s when I met John [Bragg]. My plan was to take some lessons and not really jump again. Within a couple of months though, I was back in the show ring and hooked all over again. HNW: Describe your experience at the 2014 HITS Desert Circuit in one word? Vol. 2 No. 4

“It’s certainly the most amount of money I have ever ridden for and it would be great to get there,” she said. In the Horze Equestrian Grand Prix, Geledimar was the first of Von Heidegger’s two jump-off rides and she left the ring wide eyed and grinning after both. “I’m still hoping for my first grand prix win, but I could not have been happier with how this day went. I was so excited just to get my first horse clean – the second one was icing on the cake,” said Von Heidegger.

Anyone watching as Von Heidegger landed off the last fence would have been convinced she was the winner as she dove onto the neck of Geledimar and wrapped her arms around the mare, planting kisses in her mane. “We have been having four faults week after week and I knew this was coming soon – I could feel it” said Von Heidegger. Von Heidegger was also eighth in the grand prix with Axl Rose for Monarch International.

Since 1897, Culver Academies has been
putting students on the backs of horses. We do it for a simple reason — they learn lessons in wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice. These virtues not only develop good riders, but good citizens. Located on a scenic lakeside campus, Culver Academies offers a coeducational college preparatory boarding school, grades 9-12, and an unparalleled summer experience through the Culver Summer Schools & Camps for boys and girls ages 7-17. The opportunities for our horsemanship students range from an Honors in Equine Science certification to national caliber polo teams, a jumping team, and one of the few rough-riding units still in existence. The Black Horse Troop
and Equestriennes have appeared in presidential inaugural parades, the Pegasus Parade, and the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade. With unparalleled programs and facilities, Culver offers young men and women the opportunity of a lifetime – an international environment where tomorrow’s citizens can mount up to learn, grow, and lead.

Mandy Porter Takes Catch Ride to the Blue When Mandy Porter walked into the Strongid® C 2X™ Grand Prix Stadium on Friday, the crowd expected to see her in the tack of her usual stallion, Con Capilot. This time, however, she piloted a 16.3 hand grey gelding named Lexito for Marguerite McAfee of P2 Capital, LLC. Porter, who hails from Encinitas, California, catch rode for Lexito’s regular rider Toni McIntosh of McIntosh Stables after injury has sidelined McIntosh and earned them a win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. “I rode this horse a little last fall for Toni [McIntosh], so I was familiar with him, but I certainly did not expect that we would go in there today and win,” said a pleasantly surprised Porter. “This is a game horse, but doesn’t have a lot of experience at this level – my goal was just to help keep him right and building for Toni.”

Karazissis, Sweeney Win in Hunter Ring Jenny Karazissis of Calabasas, California is a regular contender in the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, and has clearly lost no ground this year as she jumped Splendid to a win in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix for owner Julia Landmann on Friday. With top scores of 85.75 and 88, Karazissis bested a field of 35 to win under the lights in the desert. “This is a relatively new ride for me and I was very impressed with how well he handled this level of competition,” said Karazissis of the six-yearold gelding that she found for Landmann in Florida this January. “Julia bought him right before the circuit without trying him herself, and that gamble has paid off with this success today.” Tucker Williams of Houston, Texas designed the courses for both hunter prix at and made great use of the expansive Hunter Stadium. “We used every inch of the ring and spread the fences out to let them really gallop. The riders really showed up to compete today, which created a very exciting atmosphere,” said Williams who owns and operates CCI Jumps in Texas. Highlighting the course, Williams built a 12 stride bending line across the middle of the ring that gave many riders a chance to shine.

Why Sleep is Critical
by: Kimball Willson, Certified Health Coach
when you wake up in the morning, there are many techniques that can support you in getting better zzzz’s.
Health Coaching is usually thought of as nutrition consulting, but there are many other aspects to health than just eating well. Sleep is just one of those important areas that is critical to your overall health, but with the lifestyle of competitive riders, it tends to be one area where we end up shortchanging ourselves. However, ensuring that you get enough sleep is one lifestyle change you can make immediately that can have a big impact on your energy levels and your health. Learning some strategies and developing a sleep routine can help you to feel ready and restored, and give you the edge you need to maintain steady energy levels, even on the most challenging horse show days. Sleep deprivation can affect your mood, appetite, increase sugar cravings and leave you feeling unmotivated and unable to think clearly. With early schooling hours and uncomfortable hotel accommodations, getting the recommended seven-nine hours of sleep may seem impossible when on the road. If you are having sleep problems, whether you are not able to fall asleep, you wake up too often, or you don’t feel well-rested
14 | HITS News Weekly
1. Creating a bedtime routine will help prepare your mind and body for rest. Start by shutting down electronics that can be over stimulating such as the TV or your laptop an hour before bed. Maybe incorporate some gentle stretching or deep breathing. Some people like to relax by reading or taking a warm shower. Whatever works for you and is something you can stick to is what is important in creating this routine. If you tend to wake up with your mind racing with the next day’s barn chores or nervousness, keep a journal nearby where you can write down your thoughts so you can get back to sleep. 2. Aim to go to bed and wake at the same time each day whenever possible. This will help your body get into a sleep rhythm and make it easier to fall asleep and get up in the morning. It is also important that the room be pitch black as this will help maintain the hormonal levels that help you get a good night’s rest. When light hits the eyes, it disrupts the circadian rhythm of the pineal gland and disturbs production of melatonin and serotonin. (There also should be as little light in the bathroom as possible if you get up in the middle of the night.) 3. Be careful of what you consume during the day. Try to limit caffeine intake as this can alter your ability to sleep well. Many people can still experience the stimulating effects long after consuming caffeine and it can keep you from falling asleep. On the other hand, alcohol may make you drowsy,
but the effect is short lived and you will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol can also keep you from falling into the deeper stages of sleep, where the body does most of its healing. It is also best to avoid grains and sugars before bed (no late night dessert). This can raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Later, when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep. And of course, avoid foods that you may be sensitive to as they may affect sleep, such as causing apnea, excess congestion, gastrointestinal upset and gas. Implementing a few simple changes and committing to this small shift can make a huge impact on your energy levels the next day. Although long horse show days may seem draining, if you prepare by supplying your body with the rest it needs, you can transform the way you feel, as well as improve the consistent energy levels you experience. Kimball Willson is a certified Health Coach with an extensive background in the equestrian industry. As a lifelong rider and competitor, she understands the dietary and lifestyle struggles faced by today’s equestrian athletes. She specializes in guiding and supporting riders of all levels who want to gain more energy, improve their diet and lifestyle, and ultimately perform their best in the ring. Rusty Stewart and Bristol Quickly Back on Top Rusty Stewart, who hails from Camarillo, California, has rested his longtime grand prix mount Bristol since the end of last season, but returned to competition on the highest of notes this weekend. Stewart and the homebred 16-year-old gelding were the fastest double-clear effort in an 11-horse jumpoff to win the $50,000 Horze Equestrian Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, in front of a packed house. An original order of 37 showed over a course set by Danny Foster of Milton, Ontario. According to Stewart, there wasn’t a stride on the course where one could take a break. “The course was very technical, plenty big enough and asked a question with every turn. All-in-all it produced an exciting jump-off,” said Stewart.

Despite the recent hiatus from competition, it took Bristol no time to readjust to the show ring. “He was just Bristol,” said Stewart in reaction to how his horse performed. “He’s getting faster every day and he loves to jump in front of a crowd – the course designer could have built anything and I would have trusted him to do his job today.”
