A rub. It’s all that separates a flawless round from “better luck next time.” But you’re not depending on luck. You’re depending on countless hours in and out of the saddle. And you didn’t come here for just a ribbon. You came for the championship ribbon. So ask yourself, does your horse have the stomach to win?

Time for a gut check. TheStomachToWin.com

When administered for 8 or 28 days, just one dose a day of ULCERGARD is proven to effectively prevent performance-robbing equine stomach ulcers in horses exposed to stressful conditions.

FLU PROTECTION. VIRAL SHEDDING. Only Vetera® 2XP and the VETERA® XP portfolio have been updated with the most relevant equine influenza (flu) strains, Ohio/03 (Clade 1) and Richmond/07 (Clade 2), to provide comprehensive flu protection for horses. Less current vaccine strains can provide partial protection from clinical disease, but the viral shedding that puts other horses at risk can be similar to an un-vaccinated horse.1

Choose VETERA XP vaccines for direct protection, to reduce the chance of disease and viral shedding.

Insurance protection when you’re showing on the road There’s nothing more exciting than hitting the road for the show circuit. Enjoy the thrill of competition and reconnecting with friends while the member companies of American International Group, Inc. (AIG) protect the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to build. Our comprehensive insurance coverage can be tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of horse owners.

Protect your assets No matter where you are, accidents happen. Horses and people can be injured, and property can be damaged, lost or stolen. Be sure that your personal insurance program will provide protection when you need it most by discussing the following questions with your personal insurance advisor: • Do my homeowners and excess liability policies extend coverage to horses that I own or lease? • Does my liability coverage extend to locations or competitions away from home, in another state or out of the country? • Does my homeowners policy provide coverage for my personal property, tack and equipment? • Does coverage extend to my property when it’s away from home for long periods of time?

For more information, please contact your independent insurance advisor or for help finding one in your area, please contact Susan Weber at 888.594.7061 or susan.weber@aig.com. Homeowners | Equine Liability | Private Collections | Automobile | And More

HITS-on-the-Hudson

by Emily Stoermer

The debut of the Stal Hendrix Pre-Green Futurity at the HITS Championship, the LEGEND Club and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Wells Fargo, as a Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) CSI-5* event are just a few of the exciting additions to this year’s HITS Saugerties Series.

Stal Hendrix Pre-Green Futurity The Stal Hendrix Pre-Green Futurity offers young hunters the spotlight during the Richest Weekend in Show Jumping. The inaugural class boasts a guaranteed $25,000 purse, plus add-backs from all nominated horses. In true HITS fashion, the formation of the Pre-Green Futurity brings attention and impressive prize money to a unique division of riders. Together with the support of title sponsor Stal Hendrix, HITS continues to exceed expectations and grow the sport of show jumping through inclusivity.

nominated, the larger the prize money at the Final in September. “I am very excited to present this opportunity to young horse equestrian sport enthusiasts,” said HITS President and CEO Thomas Struzzieri. “With every penny of the nomination fees returned in the prize money, it should make for an extremely competitive Final in Saugerties. Early estimates suggest a six-figure purse for the first year.” The Stal Hendrix Pre-Green Futurity nomination form and class specifications are available at HitsShows.com.

LEGEND Club Interested competitors are encouraged to nominate their pre-green horses early, as the class is expected to draw a sizable number of entries. Additionally, exhibitors are reminded that the more horses

Gourmet food, luxury surroundings, and the best seats greet guests of the LEGEND Club at HITS-on-the-Hudson. Enjoy the horse show in style. Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern Executive Chef Giuseppe Napoli, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, the country’s premier culinary college, will craft each menu and create fresh, healthy selections for guests to savor.

The Paddock Club The Paddock Club, a full-service mobile kitchen, will now serve as a secondary food

service area near the Hunter Stadium. The Paddock Club features covered seating and fresh, deluxe cuisine by Diamond Mills Executive Chef Giuseppe Napoli.

FEI CSI-5* Rating Earlier this year, the FEI approved the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Wells Fargo, on September 6 as a CSI-5* event. Based on the prize money and the ranking, this class should be the highestranked class in the United States this year. The new FEI CSI-5* designation comes as HITS continues to expand its offering of international events to attract both U.S. and foreign competitors at the highest level. A total of 50 riders will be eligible to compete in the CSI-5* Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Wells Fargo. “HITS recognizes the need for U.S. riders to gain FEI ranking points right here in their home country, and strives to offer the best opportunities for riders, both domestic and foreign. The FEI’s CSI-5* designation is a testament to the quality of this event,” said HITS President and CEO Thomas Struzzieri. “This solidifies HITS’ standing as the most dynamic American showcase for world class riders and horses. It places Saugerties even more clearly on the international show jumping map.” Top: The 2015 Saugerties Million is now an FEI 5* Event. Merial Merial, a leader in the animal health care industry, announced recently it completed its acquisition of LEGEND® (hyaluronate sodium) from Bayer HealthCare. LEGEND is the first FDA-approved joint therapy product labeled for both intraarticular and intravenous injection. It is indicated in the treatment of joint dysfunction of the carpus or fetlock in horses due to non-infectious synovitis associated with equine osteoarthritis. By decreasing the production and release of these mediators, LEGEND helps reduce joint inflammation and the resulting pain and lameness. LEGEND has a proven track record, with millions of doses sold and more than 20 years of treatment success. In field studies, clinical improvement was judged to be excellent or good in 90 percent of the cases treated with I.V. LEGEND and in 96 percent of the cases treated with I.A. LEGEND. Judging horse and rider style Hunters and Equitation are two of the three disciplines that HITS offers across all circuits. Both divisions are judged based on certain United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) standards that registered judges follow, with an element of subjectivity. The third discipline, Jumpers, is judged in an objective fashion, based on time and faults.

Judges only have a short time in which to watch each competitor to assess a horse or rider’s style of performance with a score. Certain judges look for particular skills in the show ring, based on their tastes in horse or rider, while others may judge in a more systematic fashion, with rhythm and form as the core of their choices. Recently, HITS had the chance to speak with Walter J. Lee, renowned USEF R-rated Judge, to discuss what he, as a Hunter and Equitation judge, looks for in the ring. “Style is the common factor in Hunter Seat Equitation, Hunters, and Jumpers. Though each may differ slightly, correct, balanced form is the core of all forward seat riding,” said Lee. “Correct form is most functional and this applies to both the horse and the rider.”

style in their performance,” continued Lee. “While Equitation is judged on the rider’s form and style, their functionality in directing their mount through the designated course of jumps is imperative. Both Hunters and Equitation are judged subjectively, with the highest emphasis put on form and smoothness.” The most important quality of an Equitation rider is their ring presence, otherwise called style, as they execute the track, or course of jumps, from start to finish. “When I judge,” Lee adds, “good Equitation is about a rider with correct, balanced style on a rideable horse. Therefore, it makes sense that competitors should be judged on their style of performance in the ring, on a set course, without getting stuck on mechanical and arbitrary criteria for striding

The XP indicates that the vaccine now offers protection against disease in the Clade 1 family (Ohio/03) and Clade 2 family (Richmond/07). Horses in the U.S. may be at risk of infection from Clade 2 isolates of equine influenza (Richmond/07) due to exposure from commingling or travel. “It is imperative that when we think about the risk of exposure to Clade 2 EIV, such as Richmond/07, we don’t just assume that performance horses are the only ones at risk,” says Tuttle. “If a horse lives in a pasture next to a horse that travels or is commingled,

The New Home of the

Furusiyya

On Friday, February 13, all eyes were on the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium as the Opening Ceremony for the Furusiyya Federation Équestre Internationale (FEI) Nations Cup™ CSIO-4*, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona, began, and a memorable day in Marion County, Florida, horse sport history was underway.

webcasts looked on as the six nations – the United States, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Ireland – took turns over a two-round competition. The course of 15 efforts was set at 1.50m and designed by Martin Otto of Muenster, Germany.

During a presentation of the flags by a local high school color guard, a brass ensemble performed the Star Spangled Banner and one horse and rider from each of the six participating countries stood center stage, undoubtedly hoping to return to that same spot at the prize giving ceremony later in the day.

The Irish team, with Darragh Kenny, Lorcan Gallagher, Kevin Babington and Conor Swail, led by Chef d’Equipe Robert Splaine, had luck on their side, and ultimately took home top honors. Coming to Ocala with a strong squad, the team left the Sunshine State with a FEI Nations Cup™ title under their belts and a share of the $200,000 purse.

A packed grandstand, sold out VIP area, and thousands of viewers watching two live

Irish Got Lucky on Friday the 13th

In the first of a two-round competition, Kenny was quick to set the tone for the afternoon, with a clean round right out of the gate. On deck for the Irish, 23-year-old Gallagher, with Diktator van de Boslandhoeve, impressed in his first-ever FEI Nations Cup™ to give Ireland their second clear round of the day. Clean trips continued for others on the team, including Babington and Swail, who placed Ireland with an impressive zero total penalties as the first round came to a close. After the FEI Nations Cup™ scoring format was applied, dropping the highest penalty from each team, the standings going into the second round had Ireland, Colombia,

and Canada tied for first with zero faults, the United States and Venezuela tied for fourth with four faults, and Mexico in sixth with 12 faults. Of the three leading teams, Ireland was first to take the ring in the second round, with Kenny accruing eight penalties along the way to drop his team down on the leaderboard. Gallagher followed with what started as a strong round but ended with a foot on the tape at the water jump resulting in four faults, which at the time, was just enough to keep Ireland in the game for a podium finish. The pressure was on for the remaining Irish riders, as both needed to go clean for a shot at first. Babington and his mount, Shorapur, cleared the course, again igniting a match for first between the United States and Ireland. The last attempt for the Irish, and 22nd in the order, Swail, on Grafton, delivered his next clear of the day, ultimately gaining a leg up on the competition for first place. Throughout his ride, Swail’s teammates were giddy with excitement at the thought of Ireland taking home the prize. Dressed in signature Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ garb of sashes and coolers, Ireland’s winning team galloped into the prize-giving ceremony beaming with pride welcomed by an applauding audience of equine enthusiasts, HITS exhibitors and Marion County residents. Onlookers waved the flags of the six nations, while the Irish fans’ cheers carried into the wind. “We’re four great lads, we always try to come prepared and we love jumping in the Nations Cups. We’re thankful it all went very well,” said Swail. Top: Kevin Babington and Shorapur give Ireland double clear rounds at the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ at HITS Ocala CSIO-4*. Balancing the Barn and Books:

About the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League In 1991, Tom Struzzieri, President and Chief Executive Officer of HITS, Inc., the largest hunter/jumper horse show management company in the United States, founded the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League to encourage and enhance the competition level of Children and Adult Hunter and Jumper riders. Having grown from 10 member shows and approximately 100 riders in 1991, the League remains at the forefront of hunter/jumper competition nationwide by encompassing over 1,100 commissioned member-shows and more than 2,100 member-riders today. The League member-shows offer competitors the opportunity to vie for points in 19 sanctioned divisions throughout the season. These points are maintained by the League and updated weekly on the M&S League National Standings. Year-end rider rankings then determine qualifiers for the prestigious M&S Insurance League National Finals held at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York each September. It’s not too late to become a member of the M&S Insurance League and begin earning points at HITS Horse Shows and M&S Insurance League member shows. For more information or to apply online visit HitsShows.com or contact League Coordinator Patricia Guerriero at 845.246.8833 or Patti@HitsShows.com.

The Voice of a Champ

After a very competitive 2014 Marshall & Sterling Insurance League season, HITS had the privilege of corresponding with one of our most successful junior equestrians, Lena Rae Reeb, to get her perspective on riding and life, in general. At sixteen years of age, Lena is not only a dedicated and fierce competitor, but also a very insightful, confident and compassionate person. It was a pleasure getting to learn about how it all started for Lena and where she feels the road ahead will take her. Here’s what she had to say: PG: How were you introduced to riding and at what age did you first begin to ride competitively? LRR: I was introduced to riding when I was very young as my Mom, Leslie Kogos, owns Larkspur Farm [in Wilton, Connecticut]. I started riding when I was 6. I started competing in Short Stirrup when I was 8. PG: You seem very passionate about riding. Would you say that you were born to ride or was it a passion that developed over time? LRR: I definitely think I was born to ride. It’s not just a passion of mine, it’s a necessity. I don’t know what I’d do without it. It’s my cure to everything, whether I’m sick, or tired, or upset. PG: Who is your trainer and at which barn do you train? How long have you been training there?

by Patricia Guerriero

LRR: I train at Larkspur Farm with Michele West, and my mom, Leslie Kogos. My mom has been one of my driving forces and inspirations. PG: What would you say was your biggest challenge growing up in the industry? LRR: The biggest challenge I had growing up in the industry was balancing my school life with horses. If I could, I would spend all of my time at the barn, but in order to be a devoted student I had to really plan my time and be responsible about my studies. PG: What was your proudest moment or moments in show jumping? LRR: My proudest moments were when I won the inaugural Children’s Hunter Pony Finals in 2012 on my pony, Patriot, at HITSon-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York; winning the Children’s Hunter Classic at the CHJA Finals on Patriot, and two years later on my horse Call Me. Another highlight was winning Grand Hunter Champion and Best Child Rider on Private Ryan in the 2014 Marshall & Sterling Insurance League Finals, as well as being Children’s Hunter Champion and HITS 2 Working Hunter Champion. PG: When you and Private Ryan won big at the 2014 M&S Insurance League Finals, what was the highlight of that event for you? LRR: The highlight of that event was being able to see all of my hard work consistently pay off!

Top: Joe Norick of M&S Insurance presents Lena Rae Reeb and Private Ryan their awards for Champions of the Children’s Hunter Horse competition at the 2014 M&S Insurance League Finals at HITSon-the-Hudson, Saugerties, NY. PG: As you look ahead, do you think you will continue riding after high school, perhaps on an equestrian team in college? LRR: I will certainly ride after high school, and I am open to looking into riding on an equestrian team in college. PG: Have you any idea what career path you would like to follow? LRR: I would like to stay in the horse industry for my career. I couldn’t imagine anything that I’d love doing more. It’s a passion of mine that I don’t foresee ever dying down.

PG: If you had to choose one thing that riding has helped you understand about life, what would that be? LRR: Riding has given me a compassion and understanding of horses. Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix

Shines with 5*

Hosting the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ during HITS Ocala Week V was just the beginning of an enhanced commitment by HITS to domestic high performance athletes. Exciting new opportunities to compete on an international level continue in the United States during the HITS Saugerties Series when the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Wells Fargo at HITS-on-the-Hudson debuts as an FEI CSI-5* event. HITS Saugerties commences in New York’s majestic Hudson Valley on May 20 with eight weeks of show jumping boasting 19 Grand Prix events leading up to the Saugerties Million on Sunday, September 6. The days prior to the Saugerties Million will host three additional FEI jumper classes bringing the prize money total to $1,168,000 for the taking. Featured events include the $34,000 FEI Saugerties Jumper Classic on Wednesday, September 2, the $34,000 FEI HITS Jumper Classic on Friday, September 4, the $100,000 FEI Hudson Valley Jumper Classic on Saturday, September 5, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix CSI5*, presented by Wells Fargo on Sunday, September 6.

Rating by Emily Glass

Laying claim to the three largest purses in the fifty states, all of which are offered by HITS, the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix rounds out the Richest Weekend in Show Jumping amongst other notable classes such as the Vetera® XP Vaccines $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix, the Stal Hendrix Pre-Green Hunter Futurity, the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final and the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final. HITS big money classes continue at the return of the National Sunshine Series at HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California beginning October 28, 2015. A FEI CSI-5* Grand Prix (pending approval) is scheduled for Sunshine Week II, November 4-8. Looking ahead to 2016, HITS has applied for CSI-5* sanctioning for Desert Circuit Week III in Thermal, as well as Week VII of the Ocala Winter Circuit in Ocala, Florida. HITS recognizes the growing need for U.S. riders to compete at a top, international level in their home country, without having to travel abroad. From Short Stirrup to Grand Prix, the common goal at HITS is simple: provide a competitive environment that meets the needs of all levels of riders today, tomorrow, and in the years to come. As high-performance riders await the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Wells Fargo, now an FEI CSI-5* event, on Sunday, September 6, at HITS-on-the-Hudson, HITS takes a look back at this year’s first two $1 Million Grand Prix champions in the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping. Olympian Jaime Azcarraga, of Mexico City, Mexico, claimed the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix on March 15, 2015, at the HITS Desert Circuit on his Anton Radio Formula. Jaime Azcarraga, a five-time Olympian from Mexico City, Mexico, and his Anton Radio Formula, triumphed over a challenging course to claim the first jewel in the HITS Triple Crown, the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by MortgageCall, at HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California. Azcarraga has competed in five Olympic Games between 1984 and 2012. He was

one of only five riders in a field of 44 to go clear and move on to the jump-off over the challenging course designed by Marina Azevedo of Sao Paulo, Brazil. “He’s a winner; he’s a tough horse,” said Azcarraga, 55, after his win, of the 11-yearold Warmblood gelding that carried him to victory in just 41.036 seconds. Excited crowds that day packed the bleachers, VIP, and the Platinum Club, to watch the grand finale of the HITS Desert Circuit unfold. When Azcarraga, who is also a successful businessman, entered the ring, fans of the well-known Olympian stood to cheer him on. Azcarraga said, of the first round, that eliminated all but five of the hopeful riders, “It was a tough course. The jumps were tight and the end was very technical.” Second-place finisher McLain Ward, of Brewster, New York, who flew in from Florida, finished the jump-off in 41.053, less than two-tenths of a second behind Azcarraga. Ward would later claim second place again in the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix the following Monday, at HITS Ocala.

HITS President and CEO Thomas Struzzieri said that it was a terrific crowd and a great event. “It’s our third year hosting this,” he said, at a press conference with the athletes. “All in all, it was a great class.” Title sponsor American International Group, Inc. (AIG) has been a strong supporter of HITS for many years. “It is really a privilege for us to be able to sponsor this class,” said David Hubbard, Vice President, AIG Private Client

Group, which includes coverage tailored specifically for equestrians. “It’s really a lot fun for us to meet the people behind the scenes, all the people who are behind the events—the riders, the owners, everyone else who is involved. It’s not just something we do because it’s good business. We do it because of the relationship and we enjoy it as well.” HitsShows.com and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Network webcast the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by MortgageCall, live. Over 14,000 viewers in more than 10 countries watched the action from Thermal unfold and joined in conversation and excitement via social media. A replay of the event is available to watch on USEFNetwork.com and HitsShows.com. Charlie Jayne: Newest Member of $1 Million Grand Prix Winners’ Club

There wasn’t a quiet spectator in the house as Charlie Jayne, of Elgin, Illinois, aboard Chill R Z, owned by Alex Jayne and Maura Thatcher, made his victory gallop around the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium after winning the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix on March 23. After placing third at the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal, California, just one week earlier, Jayne brought his A-game to the Sunshine State for a second chance at the top spot and, after a thrilling jump-off round, left the ring $350,000 richer. Fortysix of the world’s top riders attempted the 14-effort course set by Buddy Brown of Menlo Park, California, and six made it to the jump-off.

Next $1 Million Grand Prix Winner? | 77

In the first three jump-off rounds, Kirsten Coe on Baronez, followed by Lauren Hough riding OhLaLa and Jonathan

McCrea with Aristoteles V, each had four faults. Then, two-time $1 Million Grand Prix winner, McLain Ward, on his Rothchild, provided the first clear round. Ward breezed through the course and for a moment, it looked like he had another $1 Million win under his belt. Jayne and Chill RZ, who went immediately after Ward in the jump-off, cut through the course, and as they launched over the final fence, the Great American Insurance oxer, for a clean round in a time of 42.24, the crowd erupted in cheers for the new leader. “Everybody in the jump-off was quite fast but I just had the advantage of knowing that Lauren had a rail down and I got to see McLain go,” said Jayne.

Above: Charlie Jayne basks in Great American Million glory. Photo by ESI Photography

“Before the jump-off I was talking to a friend who said ‘You know Charlie, you

won over a $100,000 last week, so just go for it,’ so that was basically my strategy,” he added. “I think I got a little lucky at the last fence. I was a few tenths of a second behind McLain last week, and I was just about that much ahead of him this week. Luck was on my side.” One entry remained and all eyes were on Callan Solem and VDL Wizard as they raced the clock and Jayne for the win. Clean but not quite fast enough, Solem finished just behind McLain’s now second place rank. Jayne, who has attempted numerous $1 Million Grand Prix and placed second, third, and fourth over the past five years, has had ample time to think about a purpose for his newly acclaimed winnings. “It’s going right to the bank,” he assured us.

OSPHOS contains clodronate disodium, a bisphosphonate indicated for the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses. OSPHOS is the only FDA-approved bisphosphonate for use in horses that is labeled for intramuscular injection. In a clinical trial evaluating OSPHOS in 86 horses, lameness improved in 74.7% of horses by at least one grade 56 days after treatment. Only 9% of horses displayed clinical signs of being uncomfortable, nervous, colicky and or pawing after receiving OSPHOS. Less than 1% of horses experienced colic requiring treatment.

OSPHOSÂŽ

(clodronate injection) Bisphosphonate For use in horses only. Brief Summary (For Full Prescribing Information, see package insert) CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. DESCRIPTION: Clodronate disodium is a non-amino, chloro-containing bisphosphonate. Chemically, clodronate disodium is (dichloromethylene) diphosphonic acid disodium salt and is manufactured from the tetrahydrate form. INDICATION: For the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive OSPHOS. WARNINGS: Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. HUMAN WARNINGS: Not for human use. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure. PRECAUTIONS: As a class, bisphosphonates may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. Sensitivity to drug associated adverse reactions varies with the individual patient. Renal and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may be associated with plasma concentrations of the drug. Bisphosphonates are excreted by the kidney; therefore, conditions causing renal impairment may increase plasma bisphosphonate concentrations resulting in an increased risk for adverse reactions. Concurrent administration of other potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be approached with caution and renal function should be monitored. Use of bisphosphonates in patients with conditions or diseases affecting renal function is not recommended. Administration of bisphosphonates has been associated with abdominal pain (colic), discomfort, and agitation in horses. Clinical signs usually occur shortly after drug administration and may be associated with alterations in intestinal motility. In horses treated with OSPHOS these clinical signs usually began within 2 hours of treatment. Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration of OSPHOS.

An affordable optionAsk your veterinarian for details!

As with all drugs, side effects may occur. In field studies, the most common side effects reported were signs of discomfort or nervousness, colic, and/or pawing. OSPHOS should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding. Use of OSPHOS in patients with conditions affecting renal function or mineral or electrolyte homeostasis is not recommended. Refer to the prescribing information for complete details or visit www.dechra-us.com. CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of licensed veterinarian. * Freedom of Information Summary, Original New Animal Drug Application, NADA 141-427, for OSPHOS. April 28, 2014.

Bisphosphonates affect plasma concentrations of some minerals and electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, immediately post-treatment, with effects lasting up to several hours. Caution should be used when administering bisphosphonates to horses with conditions affecting mineral or electrolyte homeostasis (e.g. hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, hypocalcemia, etc.). The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age. The effect of bisphosphonates on the skeleton of growing horses has not been studied; however, bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity which impacts bone turnover and may affect bone growth. Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding. The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in breeding horses or pregnant or lactating mares. Bisphosphonates are incorporated into the bone matrix, from where they are gradually released over periods of months to years. The extent of bisphosphonate incorporation into adult bone, and hence, the amount available for release back into the systemic circulation, is directly related to the total dose and duration of bisphosphonate use. Bisphosphonates have been shown to cause fetal developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals. The uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone may be greater than into maternal bone creating a possible risk for skeletal or other abnormalities in the fetus. Many drugs, including bisphosphonates, may be excreted in milk and may be absorbed by nursing animals. Increased bone fragility has been observed in animals treated with bisphosphonates at high doses or for long periods of time. Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption and decrease bone turnover which may lead to an inability to repair micro damage within the bone. In humans, atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients on long term bisphosphonate therapy; however, a causal relationship has not been established. ADVERSE REACTIONS: The most common adverse reactions reported in the field study were clinical signs of discomfort or nervousness, colic and/or pawing. Other signs reported were lip licking, yawning, head shaking, injection site swelling, and hives/pruritus. A Little Goes

a Long Way

by TJ Derella

Join HITS in making the show grounds more environmentally friendly HITS is pleased to announce the establishment of a corporate sustainability initiative designed to reduce the environmental impact created by our horse shows. Through small actions, as simple as increased recycling opportunities, HITS can make a significant difference in the way it handles waste management. Operating forty weeks of horse shows in five states is no small feat, yet there are always opportunities to lighten our environmental impact. After a review of

the successful 2015 winter show season, it was evident that a change as basic as increasing the number of recycling receptacles on our show grounds is one small move that can make a big impact. But we can only make a difference with your help. “We are constantly looking at ways to minimize our impact on the environment,” said HITS President and CEO Thomas Struzzieri. “Offering customers and staff the opportunity to recycle is just the first step in our plan, and we hope our facilities continue to be shining examples for other horse shows around the country.” The three basic “R”s of the sustainability movement are: reduce, reuse and recycle.

Reduce Reducing the amount of trash our shows produce is a simple way to help the environment.

Reuse We can reuse waste by finding creative ways to repurpose items normally discarded.

Recycle Recycling by guests and staff through our new user-friendly program at HITS-on-theHudson is a great, practical way to make these goals a reality. As most people know, many items used every day such as paper bags, soda cans, and cardboard are made out of materials that can be easily recycled. Recycled items are put through a process that makes it possible to create new products out of those used materials. New recycling bins will be placed at a variety of locations across the venue including concourses, vendor row, concession areas, and next to any existing trash receptacles. Bins will be clearly labeled with a recycling logo so exhibitors can easily identify the difference between waste and recycled goods. Sorted redeemable recyclables will be offered to local charities that will have the opportunity to take them to a local redemption center, or recycled directly by HITS. All non-redeemable recyclables will be put into the recycle stream and reused accordingly. Saugerties will be the first site to implement this plan of increased recycling opportunities and other HITS show grounds will soon follow suit.
