My perspective on architecture Here I would like to share some inspirations to my perspective on design and architecture: 1/ delightful craftsmanship and details I believe that beauty exists in the tiniest, most ordinary objects in our daily life. Beauty should be approachable by the general public. Yasuji Hanamori, my favourite editor of a magazine during the post-war eras of Japan, once said that “Beauty works only when it emerges to our daily lives.” The act of being conscious and reflective on ordinary items and daily routines defines the beauty and hence, the art. Beauty is formed by small details and small thoughts. This is projectable to different scales, from object/ furniture design, to architecture/ city scale. 2/ spatial quality by inviting nature “In making for ourselves a place to live, we first spread a parasol to throw a shadow on the earth, and in the pale light of the shadow we put together a house.” Junichiro Tanizaki wrote in his literature “In Praise of Shadow”. I am always fascinated by the poetics between light and shadow. As Tanizaki mentioned, the quality of beauty is not related to the things itself but the light and the darkness. Always there must be a proportion between light and shadow and that gives a balance of the space / objects. It also defines the beauty of a place. 3/ materials that evoke sensation The sensation is something like that of petting a puppy. It is satisfying and soothing. Material plays an essential role in sensation. This is something we can touch and feel. It can be warm or cold in both physical and psychological ways. When we touch bricks, it is cooler than our hand under the shadow but it gives a certain feeling of warmth because of its scale and manufacturing process. Marble, on the other hand, has a very full, wild texture, it is elegant but frigid. By consciously selecting materials could bring the space a sensational layer, beyond the tangible, physical layer.

C O2 ne utr a l bricks Re us e d brick s f rom demolishe d bui lding s The site holds a cultural connection to Dutch brick, but traditional brick production conflicts with our sustainability goals. We prioritize sustainability by using reused bricks and lime mortar, minimizing our carbon footprint.
The former brick factory De Ooij aan de Waal is being transformed into a unique area for living and working. The site, unused for years and serving as an army dump for the past 50 years, was acquired by developer Schipper Bosch. The plan is to build around 200 sustainable wooden homes, with a focus on preserving the area’s history, landscape, and ecology. The vision incorporates historical elements like the restored brick oven and chimney, and a charming wooden hedge hut. This transformation is a collaborative effort, engaging local residents and stakeholders, including Staatsbosbeheer.

Potential of CLT To fully utilize the strength of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), the homes are designed around a grid that optimizes CLT’s structural efficiency. This configuration creates a series of interchangeable spaces, allowing for flexible arrangements. For instance, a kitchen can easily transform into a sitting area, and vice versa. This grid not only serves as the primary load-bearing structure but also enhances the internal spatial quality of the homes. It is seamlessly integrated into all buildings, spanning from social rental apartments to detached houses. Embracing this grid aligns with a construction approach marked by a high level of prefabrication.

When designing for the homes, we have paid attention to the nuances of transitioning between indoor and outdoor spaces. How one enters, where to place shoes, and where to hang up coats. Our emphasis is particularly placed on the seamless flow from private outdoor space to the communal landscape.

In the summer of 2021, Studio Ard Hoksbergen and VDNDP won the architectural selection for the construction of Xplore – Agora Amsterdam, a secondary school for 600 students in Amsterdam North, commissioned by ZAAM
10
Agora emphasizes independent learning, empowering each student to determine their educational journey.
This freedom extends to their unique learning path, encouraging students to delve into and explore their curiosities, thereby tailoring the educational experience to their specific interests and inquiries.

In Leeuwepoort, the building plot is divided with blocks aligned to Leeuwesteyn’s scale. The architecture emphasizes sustainability with brick facades on the outer sides and a focus on biobased materials for the internal facade. Unique architectural elements, including corners, gables, frames, and ornaments, contribute to the character of Leeuwepoort.
The design showcases a distinctive “typical Leeuwesteyn” aesthetic through recognizable ‘korrels’, and community engagement is prioritized with an emphasis on entrances and meeting places.
Leeuwepoort employs a material palette of brick and wood. The outer blocks feature robust Art Deco facades in varied brick colors, blending seamlessly with Leeuwesteyn’s existing architecture.
The inner blocks showcase a warm and relaxed atmosphere with wooden cladding. The strategic use of brick colors, recycled pavement tiles, and varied wooden slats adds contemporary flair and playful variation to the overall design.
Leeuwepoort showcases biobased construction at its core, building homes with wooden facades and 3 interconnected inner courtyards filled with greenery. The use of sustainable materials, such as straw and flax for insulation, highlights the commitment to environmental responsibility. This nature-inclusive design not only enhances residents' well-being but also provides a habitat for local fauna. Overall, Leeuwepoort sets a example of sustainable urban living, emphasizing both aesthetic appeal and environmental consciousness.

The building features a two-story housing plinth and a towering structure of over 50 meters, contributing significantly to the area’s quality. Our goal is to create a neighborhood with a strong sense of community, blending social and private housing, offices, studios, and facilities around a central park. The challenge is to maintain a human scale in a large residential building. We achieved this with a soft plinth, connected houses, and strategic facade openings. Social housing units provide outdoor spaces, and the entrance serves as a hub, fostering transparency and a sense of identity. The building not only occupies space but actively contributes to the neighborhood’s collective spirit.

This school building in Deventer is designed to honor the city’s historical streetscape, drawing inspiration from the craftsmanship evident in the city’s traditional architecture. The goal is to seamlessly integrate with the rich cultural heritage of Deventer.
Integrating Etty Hillesum’s poetic words into the entrance pavement, weaving her profound reflections into the school’s foundational identity
The school, resembling a miniature society, mirrors Deventer’s essence on a smaller scale. Inspired by its bustling streets, the design offers a clear view of the expansive sky. With its heart in sky-reaching patios echoing Etty Hillesum’s reflections.
De school is een plek waar dromen geboren worden! Een gebouw waarin er ruimte gegeven wordt aan de lucht, waar de toekomst van de leerlingen ligt. Etty Hillesum, 21 June1942 *The sky serves as a symbol, representing dreams for the future.
It prioritizes clear pathways, providing an immediate overview upon entry, thereby defining its identity. The smart building structure allows for adaptable layouts and uses, facilitated by a functional and straightforward column structure. The school’s design emphasizes simplicity and adaptability in its program, creating a dynamic and flexible environment.

Despite being newly built, the campus lacked space for classrooms and outdoor activities. We were commissioned to extend the U-shaped layout, triggering concerns about fire evacuation for the added six classrooms - prompting consideration for an extra staircase.
