COBBLERS’ CORNER
4 04
VOLUME 11 ISSUE 10 FEBRUARY 22, 2018
Of cobblers, grills, and thrills Is the shoe mending trade gradually losing its foothold in Muscat? This was the thought that made us shift our focus from the usual glitz and glamour this week to the cobblers manning their small shops in the narrow alleys of the town. In an age where footwear is more about fashion than comfort, and people prefer to replace the damaged pair instead of fixing it, the need for a cobbler certainly seems to be fading. Javed Iqbal, however, begs to differ. Iqbal has been in the shoe-mending industry for a long time. Despite the changing times, the gradual decrease in demand for his services, and his meagre income, he has not given up hope. And he is not the only one. Faiyaz Ahmed, a newcomer to the profession, took the plunge despite being aware of the fact that the situation wasn’t ideal. This week, we gained insight into the life of cobblers in Muscat and soaked up their heart-warming optimism. We then took our hopefulness to a new level as we headed for a rooftop grilling experience. After all, why not make the best of whatever is left of the winter months in Muscat? Once done with lip-smacking, grilled dishes, it was time for an adrenaline rush. We were all set for thrills and fun as we geared up for wakeboarding. It seemed quite difficult at first but experts at Watersport Oman said the sport was good for beginners and encouraged newcomers to participate. Turn to Page 12 for more information.

akeboarding is basically snowboarding on water, where you get towed behind a boat and pulled across the surface of the water. The small board, which is shaped like a flattened boat, can be pulled at a speed of up to 40km/hr. What started in the 80s, when surfers started hitching rides on boats with a rope, similar to water skiing, and got evolved into a sport in the 90s, is fast catching up in Oman. Ideal for a family holiday and adventure, this extreme sport combines surfing, water skiing, and skateboarding; if you haven’t tried this sport yet, it is time to give your adrenaline a rush and learn about wakeboarding from Watersport Oman, which organises regular sessions at Azaiba beach, Bandar Khayran, and several other places in the Sultanate. Watersport Oman was launched five years ago as the country offered ideal conditions for water sports. The firm is involved in a number of water activities, including wakeboarding, wakesurfing, stand-up paddling, and kitesurfing, as well as in organising trips to Bandar Khayran, Wadi Arbayeen, Damaniyat Islands, and other scenic beaches of Oman. Anyone interested, who isn’t afraid of water, can join the sessions. “We teach people from scratch. We introduce them to the equipment and safety features and then do trials. It is a
one-hour course and you can extend it as much as you want. Once you’re ready, you can ride,” Florian Baiker, founder of Watersport Oman, said. For those who haven’t done wakeboarding, it is important to know a bit about the sport before jumping into the water. It takes some time and experience to know how to cut speed across the cove and manoeuvre the board with precision. After a couple of short lessons, you’ll have the ability to control your direction to avoid wakes or cut across them quickly to jump into the air. “We provide everything, including the boat, lifejackets, wakeboards for girls, children, and men. Anyone can come. They just need to be comfortable swimmers and physically fit,” Baikar added. One can also learn some wakeboarding tips and tricks from experts, who supervise activities on the beach. For instance, the body movements to cross the wake, surface spins, jumps and other fun tricks can be learned, which make this activity all the more exciting and thrilling. Conditions are ideal for the sport in Muscat during winters; once it gets hot, the south of Oman offers ideal conditions for such water activities. Watersport Oman +968 9269 4962

GRILLED TO PERFECTION E
ver since its invention in the Caribbean, this ancient cooking method has evolved through time to become a fine dining celebration that carries influences from around the world. From traditional Omani pit barbecues, known as Shuwa, to smoky Indian tandoor grills, these have become a staple for outdoor picnics and patio cooking, giving us a fun and fiery way to indulge in our favourite dining moments, especially during the winters. This week, we are taking you to the Samah Rooftop Restaurant at Platinum Hotel to feast on a variety of meats and fish, perfectly marinated and cooked on grills and in tandoor ovens, serving nothing short of a barbecue rooftop fantasy. When we heard that Samah was dishing up some authentic barbecue flavours on weekends, we could not contain our excitement. After all, when the weather is still favourable, who wouldn’t like to taste some hot and spicy grilled delights in the outdoors?
As we entered the rooftop, poolside restaurant, the aroma wafting from the grill set the mood and we were ready to feast on a wide array of scrumptious kebabs and steaks. We walked around the pool and to the edge of the restaurant to take a peek at the busy streets of Al Khuwair, only to get an even better view of two iconic landmarks: the snow-white Al Ameen Mosque in Bousher and the Bousher-Al Amerat mountainous road. It was quite spectacular. We found a perfect spot and walked to the grilling station to pick and choose the ingredients of our choice. At the station, we were spoilt for

choice. We asked the friendly waiter to surprise us with two platters full of tandoor-grilled goodness. The crisp smell of the grills filled the air and soon the waiter placed two plates on our table, along with lemon butter and barbecue sauces. The plates looked great with moist, flavourful chunks of traditional Indian meats, as well as barbecue favourites. Some of the cuts we tried included a tender grilled chicken marinated in mustard paste and lemon juice and spiced with hints of garlic, thyme, rosemary, and a splash of olive oil. Lamb chops were also on offer, marinated in mustard paste, HP

sauce, a bunch of garlic and rosemary, and olive oil. The chops were perfect, with a sweet-spicy flavour to match. We also had Mutton Sheekh Nawabi, a classic Indian kebab made of minced meat, mixed with fragrant ginger, chopped garlic, green chilli, hints of coriander leaves, a bunch of Indian spices, and a bit of creamy butter. The kebabs are then put on a skewer and charred in a tandoor-oven. They weren’t the star of the show, but were worth trying, especially if you love kebab rolls. Another great dish was the Asrafi Chicken Tikka. Tender pieces of chicken marinated in ginger-garlic paste, yoghurt, Indian spices, and mustard oil gave the dish an impeccable taste. Paired with butter or garlic naan, it was a match made in heaven. We saved the best for last. The stuffed tangri kebab, a traditional staple made of drumsticks, stuffed with minced chicken and prepared with creamy yoghurt, crushed cashew nuts, mustard oil, Indian spices, ginger, and a slather of garlic paste, was absolutely succulent, from its crispyyet-soft meat to the piquant filling. We stepped inside Samah full of scepticism, but left a few pounds heavier and with a desire to come back, not only for the lip-smacking fire-kissed Indian grills, but for the beautiful views of Al Khuwair, as well.

arved from former Yugoslavia, the Western Balkans span the entire Dalmatian Coast, sharing boundaries with Romania and Bulgaria in the east and with Austria and Hungary in the north. During the troubled 90s, the Balkans were unfortunately known for tragedies stemming from ethnic complexities. With time, however, the discords started diluting and compatibility increased. With Marija Šerifović winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 and the 2008 edition coming to Belgrade, an entire spectrum of regional
friendliness finally amalgamated. Yugoslavia was a combination of the Slavic word “jugo”,meaning south, and “Slaveni”, referring to the Slavs. It was a country for people speaking the south Slavic languages, such as Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Slovene and Macedonian, as opposed to other Slavic nations of the north, notably Poland,Czech and Russia. After World War I, a conglomerate was formed and named the “Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes”, in which there existed a sub-blending within the Serbs from the areas of the AustroHungarian Empire, with the independent kingdom of Serbia. The Serbian Royal
House of Karađorđević was re-anointed as the Yugoslav royal dynasty. After World War II, however, with the abolition of the monarchy and the formation of a communist government under the towering leadership of Josip Broz Tito, the country was renamed the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, with a constituent of six Socialist Republics (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Serbia, which again contained two autonomous Socialist Republics of Vojvodinad and Kosovo). Moreover, the territories of Istria, Zadar, and Rijeka were integrated into

shells of grenades, bullets and parts of exploded landmines. Serbia The capital Belgrade on the banks of river Danube remains home to inventor Nikola Tesla. The city also houses major vestiges of Communist era architecture and the Belgrade fortress that hosted the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. It is not just the vibrant Belgrade with her pulsating nightlife that signifies Serbia, but cities such as Novi Sad, Niš and Zemun are no less captivating. Lepenski Vir, Gamzigrad, and Studenicva have history interwoven into them, while nature lovers can get their fill at the National Parks, Zaovine,or even in the caves of Resavska Pećina.

it from Italy. The country was renamed in 1963 as the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a name it held on to till the disintegration started in the end of the 80s. Tito’s unfortunate passing away in 1980 paved the way for a collective Presidency, with the migration of power from the federal government to republics and autonomous bodies. The cusp of the 80s and 90s was a time for tumultuous upheavals.More so, since Tito had broken off from Joseph Stalin, and the disintegration of the USSR had become imminent. The absence of the Soviet threat removed a powerful impetus for the necessity of unity in Yugoslavia. Taking advantage of a weakened central government,Slobodan Milosevic fermented trouble in the surrounding republics, while trying to establish his Presidential position at home. But non-communist players took control of the legislatives in Croatia and Slovenia, and the script started evolving rapidly. Though the Yugoslav Army (JNA) tried to intervene, they withdrew in a short while and Slovenia became the first country to be sovereign. But in Croatia, the JNA favouring the Croatian Serbs left the country devastated, with thousands killed and many more displaced. Macedonia and Bosnia screamed for independence as well. A US peacekeeping force at the border of Serbia and Macedonia ensured there was no conflict, but Bosnia was living a gory tale. Within four years, an ethnic conflict arose with an intensity that Europe had not witnessed since World War II. After the loss of thousands of lives with millions left homeless and countless maimed, Bosnia became a free country. The Albanian majority population in Kosovo ensured that Kosovo moved away from the conglomerate as well. The last
breakaway was Montenegro. Meanwhile, justice upheld the crimes of Slobodan Milosevic and Ratko Mladić. Finally, from a single Yugoslavia, seven sovereign countries emerged. Croatia The jewel of the Western Balkans has Dubrovnik at the bottom end, and is the best place to visit other countries. Old Dubrovnik is a picture postcard town. Soak in the ambience, walk the alleys, waltz the ramparts, indulge in local beverages and cuisine, ferry down to the island of Lokrum, or do nothing at all and watch the world pass by: the options are numerous. Spit, Zadar, Rijeka are enchanting places to visit. The Adriatic Coast that outlines the entire stretch of Croatia in the west is tragically the most underrated and possibly the best coast one could come by. Bosnia & Herzegovina Being on the crossroads where the Byzantines from the east met with the Romans of the west, it has a merry mix of cultures and traditions. The Ottomans built astounding bridges over mountainous rivers in Bosnia and many of them have become absolute tourist attractions. On the way to Mostar, stop at Medujorge. A catholic pilgrimage centre since the Virgin Mary appeared on the Apparition Hill in 1981, it is adorned by a wonderful church. Further up, Mostar has an old bridge or Stari Most, built by the Ottomans over the river Neretva, which has become iconic and generic to the town itself. Diving from the bridge into the cold water of Neretva is a traditional sport and attracts a lot of skilled divers. The quaint town of Mostar has turned the ethnic conflict of the previous decades into commerce, and remnants of the war are sold as souvenirs, including
Montenegro Budva, Bay of Kotor, Sveti Stevan, all these crowd the Adriatic coastline of Montenegro and are absolute wonders and a far cry from the comparatively placid capital Sarajevo. Budva is the party capital of the Balkans and the nightlife here is eclectic. The Venetian-built stone walls around the medieval town of Stari Grad are amazing to wander around and the beaches are exciting. Just a few miles away is the small islet of Sveti Stefan. Once a playground of the rich, it is an exclusive property of the Russians now. The Bay of Kotor will keep you hunting for superlatives. The Bay has apparently been inhabited since antiquity and spending a few days to explore the area is simply delightful. Kosovo, Macedonia, and Slovenia Kosovo is still licking its birth wounds and though it has incredible trekking spots in the Sharr and Kapaonik mountains, it is yet to develop its latent tourism potential.Macedonia’s biggest attraction is Lake Ohrid in the south. Capital Skopje is a charming, neat city with a Grand Old Bazaar quarter and Ottoman houses-turnedmuseums,including the National gallery of Macedonia, which was a Turkish bathhouse many centuries ago. Slovenia is a heaven for ski enthusiasts. The Julian Alps are home to many ski towns such as Vogel, Kranjska Gora or Kanin. They are easy to access and the pistes are rather uncrowded. But that does not diminish the beauty of the church-topped isle of Lake Bled or the medieval castles in Ljubljana, where architecture is an eclectic mix of baroque and modern.
