For the Egyptian priesthood, Hermes was the Greek equivalent of Thoth, the god of scribes and, by extension, the god of law.

In Egyptian cosmology, it was the essential role of the pharaoh/king to uphold the cosmic order and prevent chaos by serving as the intermediary between gods and men. Earthly law was the same concept on a lower plane; it prevented society from descending into chaos. It’s just possible, then, that the serpent staff behind the head of Ptolemy I represents an attempt to develop a visual symbol, in terms of G reek iconography, for the concept of order (Egyptian Ma›at). Ptolemy V was explicitly compared to Hermes «the Great and Great» in an inscription (OGIS I, 90, line 19). The inscription refers to the provision of justice (literally, «the just thing,» which is not quite the same) for all. Huss says this is the only time this comparison was made in this reign. Our coin was struck by officina S=6, a new variety: previously this hexagram had only been recorded from officinae Δ=4 and E=5. Extremely beautiful and rare.

The baboon, modeled in rare two-tone faience has a light blue faience body and wears a green solar disk on his head. The baboon was an animal manifestation of Thoth, the god of writing and measurement, but was also closely associated with the sun god Re, for it becomes agitated and shrieks loudly just before sunrise. As an amulet, the baboon would have linked its owner with rebirth and renewed life in the company of the newly risen sun. The piece was originally part of a small bronze sarcophagus lid and has brown, red and green patination. A beautiful example of an increasingly rare Egyptian type. The four sons of Horus were responsible for protecting the internal organs of the deceased. Each of the four gods was associated with a particular canopic jar and its contents. From the late 18th Dynasty onwards the lids of the canopic jars were modeled in the forms of the four gods- jackal, baboon, hawk and man. Depictions and paintings of the four sons consisted of human figures with their characteristic head. Imsety protected the liver and was depicted as a human headed figure, mostly mummiform. Egyptian Bronze Hathor Headed Sitrum Handle, Late Period, ca.

715-330 BC. The sistrum was a sacred musical instrument used in the worship of first Bastet and more commonly Hathor. It was used in dances and religious ceremonies as well as averting flooding of the Nile and to scare off the evil Set. Originally this piece would have had a high looping piece of metal which would have extended above the handle. Along the sides of this metal would have been three to four holes for which movable rods would have been inserted. When shaken the metal rods would have rattled making a loud clanking noice. This particular sistrum handle is quite complex with the head of the Egyptian god Hathor at the center as well as a cat on top representing Bastet. Horus-the-child is often shown seated on the lap of his mother Isis, nursing at her breast, but the square base on which his feet rest suggests that this piece was independent of a larger statue ensemble. The shrew was regarded, together with the ichneumon, as a manifestation of the sun-god Horus of Letopolis in the Delta, whose name, (Me)khenty-(en)-irty “the Blind and the Seeing,” reflects the complete daily cycle of day and night. The ichneumon, active during the day, represented daytime sunlight and thus the “seeing” aspect of Horus, while the shrew, a nocturnal animal, symbolized the darkness of night and the “blind” Horus. .........................................................................................................................450 428. Egyptian Faience Lion-Featured Amulet, Ptolemaic Era, ca. 30030 BC. A lion-featured amulet, with apparent similarities to the images of the protective dwarf-god, Bes; a wide face displaying prominent ears, arched eyebrows, and mane-like beard. This amulet of a lion’s head functioned protectively as well, invoking the fierce nature of the male lion and its observed

strength. This may be a representation of the male lion-god Mayhes, son of the cat-goddess Bastet, who, in mythology, aided the sun god against the evil serpent Apophis, who had threatened the progress of the sun in the sky. This amulet was constructed for wear as a pendant in a necklace, with perforation for stringing and flat backing. It is made of faience glazed green and is in good condition with minor wear on the nose area and slight chipping at its headdress.

Although images of Mayhes are usually associated with the Saite Period, 26th Dynasty, (664-525 B.C.) this image appears to be of later date, to the Ptolemaic Era, (300-30 B.C.).

This is the front and back portion of a frame which would have been part of a stand which possibly held a sarcophagus in ancient times. The legs are modeled in the form of a lion and lioness- the front part of the stand depicts the heads and forepaws and the back of the frame, which would have originally been attached with side rails, now missing, is modeled on the rear part of a lions.

Hair combed upwards and knotted at the top of the head. The coiffure is reminiscent of the head types of the Three Graces, cf. B. Sismondo Ridgeway, Hellenistic Sculpture, III. The Styles of ca. 100-31 BC (Madison 2002), pl. 37. However, the coiffure is known for young (i.e. still unmarried) girls since the late 4th century BC and was in use throughout the Hellenistic age. The workmanship of this head with its sharp contrast between the sfumato of the face and the rough, artistically unfinished mass of the hair points to a late Hellenistic date. Roman Marble Torso of Young Dionysos Wearing Panther Skin, ca. 154-284 AD. This torso of a youthful nude male shows the god of wine carrying a drinking cup in his right hand. The upper part of the vessel is missing, but it probably had two vertical handles, making it a kantharos, the characteristic cup of Dionysos. The god wears his pantherskin like a sash across his chest.

One paw hangs down onto the god’s belly. The skin is characterized as that of a panther not only by the claw but also by the circular spots incised into its surface.

The god’s long hair falls onto his shoulders in back. A flowering ivy vine, one of the characteristic plants of Dionysos, climbs the pillar beside the god’s right leg.

In his missing left hand the god would have held his thyrsos, a staff of fennel topped with a pinecone or a cluster of leaves.

It is relatively rare for Dionysos to be shown wearing his pantherskin across his chest, but it is even rarer for the god to be shown in such a flat and linear style.

Traditional Classical illusionism, with its rich modulations of surface and contrasts of light and shadow, has given way to simple contours, sharp outlines, and closed, almost geometric surfaces. This style of representation is known from a multitude of grave and votive reliefs from Phrygia in the mountainous interior of western Turkey. It is clear that this style is a kind of folk art contemporary with the more conventional classicism of the coasts of the Mediterranean. Guntram Koch has brought together examples that are dated by inscription from 154 to 284 C.E. (Roman Funerary Monuments in the J. Paul Getty Museum I, Malibu 1990, 115132). Freestanding sculptures of Classical subjects in this stylized, linear manner are rarer.

This sculpture may not come from Phrygia itself. The grayish marble from which it is carved is unlike the fine-grained almost pure white marble characteristic of Phrygia, which stems from the important quarries of Dokimeion (near modern Afyon). The sculptor apparently moved beyond his native area to an adjoining region, choosing a marble more readily available there.

One of the special attractions of this statuette is the beautifully preserved surface.

One can easily see that the sculpture was finished with claw chisels. A fine chisel was used for the god’s body, and a slightly coarser one was used for the panther skin, as if to create a contrast of texture. The chisel used for the back of the pillar was coarser still. The absence of polish suggests that the sculpture may have been shipped from the sculptor’s studio to a relatively distant destination.

Sculpture may often have been polished only at its final destination.

Pre-Columbian Moche Portrait Head Vase, ca. 500-600 AD. A nice example of a Moche head vase. The piece has the characteristic large curved nose and wide open eyes with frowning mouth. 454. Viking Pair of Bronze Bracelets with Animal Terminals, ca. 9th10th Century AD. A pair of bronze bracelets of substantial thickness with rounded band tapering down to a slender animal head (possibly a boar) at each terminal.

Each piece has a wide uninscribed face with punched geometric detailing towards the terminals. Thick green, blue and brown patination, particularly on the underside. A slight bend and ancient repair in the middle of one of the bracelets.

Northeastern Thailand Ban Chiang Terracotta Painted Bowl, ca. 3rd Century BC. This piece is molded with the classic orange Ban Chiang painting with curvilinear lines and striations. Northeastern Thailand Ban Chaing Terracotta Painted Footed Vessel, ca. 3rd Century BC. The piece has a conical foot which suspends the bowl with a thick lip. H. 7 1/8” D. 6” (18 x 15 cm).....................................................................................................375 457. Chinese Ming Iron Head of a Buddha, ca. 17th Century AD. This large Buddha head is typical of late Ming iron sculpture. The piece is thickly cast and retains traces of its original polychrome painting. Larger pieces of Ming iron work were cast toward the end of the Ming Dynasty and painted. This is a nice example of the Chinese version of the Buddha with a wider face and larger heavy domed ushnisha and the urna is moved from the forehead to the top of the head.

This Buddha dates from the late Ayutthia period, about the middle of the 18th century. It stands in stylized elongated form and holds both hands in the double Abhaya mudra. This mudra is very popular in Thailand, sometimes called the “stilling of the waves” as a gesture of the dispelling of fear. The piece retains traces of its lacquer gilding over a glossy olive patina. A nice larger example of a Thai Buddha. H. 27” (68.5 cm)...............................................................................3950 459. New Guinean Sepik River Wooden Drum, ca. late 19th- early 20th Century AD. This very substantial drum is sculpted from a single timber. It has a raised nub bottom below a wave pattern register. The body of the drum has a long rectangular opening into its hollowed out center with a carved face above the opening. The drum terminates in the boldly modeled head of a crocodile surrounded by two circular relief designs. The piece has traces of pigment throughout and a wonderful aged surface complete with beating scars on one side of the opening. This is a superb ethnographic piece of very large size and in excellent condition. H. 58” (147 cm)...............................................................4500 460. Japanese Plique-a-Jour Vase, ca. early 20th Century AD. Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time consumption (up to 4 months per item), high failure rate, requires psychological strength to start over. The technique is similar to that of cloisonné, but using a temporary backing that after firing is dissolved by acid or rubbed away. In perfect condition with no cracks.. H. 5” (14 cm)..................1400 461. Indian Marble Standing Parvati Stele, ca. early 20th Century AD. This small white marble stele depicts Parvati dressed in a flowing sari represented in manifold form, her four arms holding a lingum and a yoni, a small image of Ganesh, and her primary arms holding a rosary and a small basket. She is delicately carved with a crown and nice facial detailing. A very nice example of a later Indian style. Traces of pigment. A few scattered chips. United States Map of the United States, By: Case, Tiffany & Co., 1851(dated). A scarce large format map of the United States with striking insets of a President Washington and a view of the Capitol of Washington. The projection oddly distorts and for-shortens the western portion of the U.S. The very interesting territorial configurations include the pre-Gadsden Purchase border with Mexico, a large Oregon Territory occupying the entire Northwest and extending to the Continental Divide. Bordering Oregon is a huge Missouri Territory that extends east to an oversized Minnesota Territory at the Missouri River. The very large Indian Territory sits between Utah, Missouri, and Missouri Territory. Utah and New Mexico are at their largest extent. In Utah is the Mormon Settlement at the Great Salt Lake. The map extends to include most of Central America and the western part of the West Indies. Lacks covers. A fine example with bright, full original coloring on thin banknote style paper. Folding as issued.

One fold intersection split and a couple tiny spots, still very good. The finest example of this map we have seen. 23 1/2 x 24” (59.7 x 61 cm)...................1450 463. South American Americae pars Meridionalis By: Hondius / Jansson, 1640 (circa). This is an important, decorative map of the South American continent. The coastlines are well detailed but the interior is filled with spurious information. Several rivers (including the Amazon and Paraguay) all have their source in the Lago de los Xarayes. The mythical Parime Lacus dominates the interior of Guyana. The map is richly embellished with ships and sea monsters in the oceans and vignettes of villages and animals on the continent. The large title cartouche features natives and indigenous animals.

464. Western Hemisphere L’Amerique, Meridionale et Septentrionale by Nicholas de Fer, 1705 (dated). Publication: L’Atlas Curieux ou le Monde Dresse. This charming map of the Americas is a reduced derivative of De Fer’s classical wall map of 1698 with information gathered from the archives of the Academie Royale des Sciences. The island of California covers the entire west coast of North America north of the Tropic of Cancer with two large imaginary islands off shore. One of the prominent features in northern Mexico is Les Mine de S. Iean et de Ste. Barbe, the legendary Santa Barbara mines of the Chihuahua-Durango region. There are several large spurious lakes on both continents. A partial coastline of New Zealand appears beside the title cartouche. The map is richly decorated with three cartouches and a compass rose. This is the second state. Some paper weakness has been reinforced at lower left and there are a couple minor soft creases. B+. 13 x 8.8” ( 33.1 x 22.4 cm).................................................................................................................1300 465. Western Hemisphere Totius Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Novissima Repraesentatio By: Homann Heirs, 1730 (circa). This attractive map is a revision of the elder Homann’s 1710 map of the Americas. After his death in 1724, his son (Johann Christoph Homann) reengraved the plate to correct the western coastline of North America, shown here extending very far west and north, with very little detail. California is no longer shown as an island, although the remnants of the interior sea can be seen near the Pais de Moozemleck where a river nearly connects with the Mississippi River system, hinting at the possibility of a Northwest Passage. The Great Lakes are taking shape, being actively explored by the French fur traders and the Hudson Bay Company. The Solomon Islands are prominently placed in the Pacific, considerably too far to the east. The map is decorated with two large pictorial cartouches, the one at top shows natives worshipping a fearsome demon at the right, while at left they listen placidly to a priest. The lower cartouche features the landscape, native fauna and two natives. A nice example with a good impression. Original color and mild toning. 22 1/2 x 19 1/4” (57 x 49 cm).....1850 466. Colonial A Chart of The Great Western Ocean with the Coast of Europe, Africa and America by S. Parker, 1721. This is a very handsom chart of the northern Atlantic Ocean published during the era of heavy slave trade. This Chart appeared in John Senex’s “A New General Atlas, containing a geographical and historical account of all the empires, kingdoms, and other dominions of the world: with the natural history and trade of each country.” Condition: B. Publication: John Senex’s “A New General Atlas” London. 19 3/8 x 23 1/2” (49 x 60 cm)..........................................................1500 467. African Africae Accurata Tabula ex officina By: Nicolas Visscher, 1677 (circa). This beautiful map of the African continent is typical of the late seventeenth century, including updated information taken from Blaeu’s wall map of the continent. The Cuama and Spirito Santo Rivers are shown with a common source in the Sacaf Lacus in South Africa. The Nile arises from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan, located below the Equator, as according to Ptolemy The interior is decorated with elephants, ostriches, monkeys, lions and rhinoceros, and eleven small ships sail in the sea. The title cartouche is flanked by natives and angels, and in the lower left is a dedication cartouche with the coat of arms of Gerardo Schaep surrounded by Neptune and his entourage. This is the second state of the map with the notation of privilege in the bottom.

Original color with a nice impression. There is some offsetting in the image and a few tiny holes near the centerfold. Some light toning and foxing primarily in the margins. 21 1/2 x 17” (55 x 43 cm)................................................................1500 468. Mediterranean Mangi Turcarum Dominatoris Imperium per Europam (Map of the Ottoman Empire) By: Seutter / Lotter, 1760 (circa). This striking map covers the Turkish Empire, extending to Greece, Arabia and Lybia, with the Caspian and Black Seas and Eastern Mediterranean.

The map is filled with details of towns, rivers and mountains. The gorgeous, large title cartouche featuring the emperor, merchants, soldiers, and a lion was engraved by Abraham Drentwet Jr. Map is in B+ Condition with original color, some toning along the centerfold and some soil in the cartouche. 22 1/2 x 19 1/2” (57 x 50 cm).....................................................................................................850 469. World Werelt Caert by Daniel Stoopendaal, 1730 (circa). This is the second state of Stoopendaal’s double hemisphere map from a Dutch Bible based on Visscher’s similar map of 1663 and surrounded by allegorical representations of the continents. It has been updated here to show California as an island with a flat northern coastline, Australia’s western and northern coastlines, a revision in the coastline for New Guinea, and the addition of some islands in the South Pacific. Diagrams of the Copernican and Ptolemaic solar systems rest between the hemispheres. This is the small version of this world map, without the banner title. Dutch text on verso. The map has been professionally remargined to accommodate framing and backed with light. B+.
