GOLD River God Acheloos MYSIA, CYZICUS; 500-450 BC, EL Stater, 16.12g. Not in von Fritze; second recorded of type. Obv: Head of river god Acheloos r. (man-headed bull), tunny to l. Rx: Quadripartite incuse square. This lovely early stater from Cyzicus has an image of the river god Acheloos. Acheloos fell in love with Arethusa which is why she fled to Syracuse. This type is unknown in von Fritze and the only other specimen that has been seen in the market is a hekte (see Gemini IV, 8 January 2008, lot 186). Some light wear that is normal for these early electrum coins but great centering and no real issues. Fascinating imagery on an early coin. EF for issue.................................................. 14500 GAUL, AULERCI CENOMANI, LE MANS; 2nd Century BC, Stater, 7.08g. De La Tour-6847. Obv: Celticized head of Apollo r. Rx: Celticized horse with human head prancing r. A pleasant piece with good centering, but weakly struck on one edge, at lower right on obverse and lower left on reverse. Some minor pitting. VF......................... 1500 BRITAIN, DUROTRIGES; 65-58 BC, EL Stater, 6.10g. Van Arsdell-1205-5. Obv: Abstracted head of Apollo r. Rx: Disjointed horse standing l. Weakly struck along one edge and with some wear, but still a pleasant example. Fine+..................................... 675 MACEDONIA, ALEXANDER III THE GREAT; c. 323-319 BC, Stater, 8.61g. Price-2114. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. with long curls and wearing a Corinthian helmet. Rx: Nike standing l. holding wreath in outstretched arm; monogram in outer l. field and double ax in inner r. field; legend [ΑΛ]ΕΞΑΝΔΡ[ΟΥ] r. Outstanding style with incredible detail. The reverse slightly off-center with resultant loss of the top of Nike’s head. EF with some luster.......................................................................................... 4500 Nero and Poppaea NERO; 54-68 AD, Rome, 64-5 AD, Aureus, 7.30g. BM-52, C-42 (60 Fr.), Paris-199, RIC-44 (R2), Calicó-401. Obv: NERO CAESAR - AVGVSTVS Head laureate r. Rx: AVGVSTVS - AVGVSTA Nero and Poppaea standing l. beside each other; Nero is togate and radiate and holds patera and scepter; Poppaea is draped and veiled and holds patera and double cornucopia. Ex Goldberg 75, 24 September 2013, lot 2579. The figures on the reverse can hardly be Augustus and Livia, since neither is called divine. They must be Nero and his consort, and the issue date of the coin requires that the consort be Poppaea, who was made Augusta when she gave birth to a daughter in 63, and who died in 66. See Mattingly in BMC, p. clxxiii. The authors of the standard catalogues do not seem to have noticed that Poppaea sometimes holds a double rather than a single cornucopia in this type, as clearly on our coin. This is Nero’s most entertaining issue, showing not only an excellent laureate portrait of Nero on the obverse, but also his radiate, togate figure with his unfortunate wife Poppaea standing next to him on the reverse, for whose death Nero is said to have been responsible by kicking her in the stomach when she was pregnant. Slightly off-center on the reverse with very minor imperfections in the metal. Some wear on the high points of hair. aEF................... 12500 NERO; 54-68 AD, Rome, 66-7 AD, Aureus, 7.27g. BM-94, Paris-236, RIC-66 (R2), Calicó-445, C-317 (40 Fr.). Obv: IMP NERO CAESAR - AVGVSTVS Head laureate r. Rx: SALVS in exergue, Salus seated l. on throne, r. holding patera, l. resting at her side. Some faults in fields, particularly a scratch before Salus’ legs on reverse and an indentation to the right of her left elbow. Good detail with only a touch of wear. EF ...... ................................................................................................................................. 12500 HONORIUS; 393-423 AD, Milan, c. 395-402 AD, Solidus, 4.50g. captive, and holding labarum and Victory on globe, COMOB in exergue, M - D in field. Ex Goldberg 72, 5 February 2013, lot 4630 (Hunter Collection). A very pretty coin with lovely strike and minimal issues. Two slight scratches in upper left field on obverse, one to right and the other to left of the legend. EF............................................................ 2000 ARCADIUS; 383-408 AD, Sirmium, 395-7 AD, Solidus, 4.31g. RIC-1 (R3), Depeyrot-32/1 (1 spec. from officina I=10). Obv: D N ARCADI - VS P F AVG Bust diademed r. Rx: VICTORI -A AVGG I Emperor standing r. holding vexillum and Victory on globe, placing foot on chest of bearded captive lying before him, mintmark S - M across field, COMOB in exergue. Ex Goldberg 72, 5 February 2013, lot 4629 (Hunter Collection). Depeyrot records only one specimen of this solidus from officina I: Kress Sale, 30 June 1964, lot 959. Incredible detail, particularly the face of the bearded captive. A pretty piece. Mint State........................................................................................... 2750 TIBERIUS II; Antioch, 578-582 AD, Siliqua, 4.12g. DO-38, MIB-5, Sear-446. Obv: Armored facing bust of Tiberius holding globus cruciger. Rx: VICTORI - A AVGGΘS Cross on four steps, OB+* in exergue. VF+............................................................ 1500 JUSTINIAN II; 2nd Reign, 705-711 AD. Constantinople, Solidus, 4.22g. Berk-200. Obv: D h IhS ChS REX - RECNANTIuM Facing bust of Christ with short curly hair and cross behind his head, raising his r. hand in benediction and holding the book of Gospels in his left. Rx: D N IuS - TINIA - NuS MuLTUS AN Facing bust of Justinian II with short beard and crown with cross atop, holding a cross potent on three steps in r. hand and a globus cruciger, inscribed PAX, in l. hand. Justinian II was the first to mint coins with the image of Christ. The first version showed a long-haired Christ, which was to become the standard depiction of Christ from then on until the present day. The second type, as on our coin, was an Eastern-looking Christ with short curly hair, which may have been what Christ really looked like. This coin is a beautiful example with no real issues. Very slight scratch on neck of Christ and in field to left; some flat striking in legend at top of obverse and at corresponding bottom of reverse. EF....................... 5000 IRENE, SOLE REIGN, 797-802 AD; Syracuse, Solidus, 3.82g. Cf. DO-1c. Obv: Facing crowned bust of Irene holding globus cruciger and cruciform scepter, pellet in field l. Rx: Same type as obv., but C in field l., I in r. Extremely rare. Stylistically interesting image of Irene on small flan from the Syracuse mint versus the more wellknown variety on larger flan from Constantinople. Very sharp strike for issue. The legend is mostly off-flan which is typical for these coins. EF for issue................................. 8500 GREEK SILVER ATREBATES, EPATICCUS; 35-43 AD. Silver Unit, 1.03g. Van Arsdell-580-1 (Common). Obv: Bust r. wearing lion’s skin; EPATI in front of face. Rx: Eagle facing with head turned l., wings spread, holding serpent in claws; above, pellet in ring . Some roughness to the surfaces but nonetheless a lovely strike and good centering. aEF.... 300 Janified Sphinxes SPAIN, EMPORION; c. 5th century BC, Trihemiobol, 1.00g. Villaronga/BenagesIberian-1. Obv: Janified sphinxes. Rx: Irregular square incuse. The patterns for these coins have their origin in Massalia. Ex Gorny & Mosch 199, 2011, lot 14. This small coin (10mm in diameter) has an uncommon obverse type of janified sphinxes. The relief is high and the strike is excellent. EF..........................................................................3500 SPAIN, OSCA; c. 180-20 BC, Drachm, 3.83g. Burgos-1501. Obv: Bearded head r., Iberian inscription behind. Rx: Horseman r., Iberian inscription below. Nice toning and surfaces and great strike. EF.........................................................................................325 SPAIN, TURIASO; Early 1st cent. BC, Denarius, 3.96g. ACIP-1720. Obv: Male head r.; Iberian inscription before, behind and below head. Rx: Horseman with lance r., Iberian insciption TURIASU below. A very nice example with good centering and sharp

strike. There is a die break extending from the mouth of the head on the obverse to the edge of the flan. There are also two hairline cracks at 3h (extending from nose to edge) and 9h (from back of head to edge). Choice EF............................................475 GAUL, MASSALIA, OBVERSE BROCKAGE; 3rd Century BC, Tetrobol, 2.49g. Obv: Head of Artemis r., quiver over shoulder, monogram under chin. Rx: Same, incuse and mirror image. Lovely toned example with nice relief. VF+ with cabinet toning...................................................................................................................... 650 GAUL, MASSALIA; 3rd Century BC, Obol, 0.66g. Obv: Young male head l. Rx: Wheel with four spokes, M-A in two quadrants. Somewhat rough surfaces; obverse struck from worn die. aVF...................................................................................... 200 CALABRIA, TARENTUM; c. 272-235 BC, Nomos, 6.41g. SNG ANS-1197, Vlasto-877-882. Obv: Naked youth on horse prancing horse r., wielding spear in r. hand and holding large round shield and two additional spears in left. Behind ΔΙ; in exergue, magistrate’s name. Rx: Taras on dolphin l. holding kantharos and trident. Symbol of nymph to r., TAΡΑΣ below. Nicely centered and reasonably well-struck piece. VF................................................................................................................. 400 LUCANIA, LAOS; 500-480 BC, 1/6 Stater, 1.06g. SNG Cop-1149. Obv: Manheaded bull standing l., looking back. Rx: Bull standing r. This small coin (10mm in diameter) has very interesting imagery but porous surfaces. Fine......................... 200 LUCANIA, THURIUM; c. 350-300 BC, Distater, 14.53g. HN Italy-1815 (same dies), Noe-Group G. Obv: Head of Athena r. wearing Attic helmet with florid crest and decorated with Scylla holding rudder-oar in r.; on neckguard, griffin; behind IΠ, in field behind head, Nike flying. Rx: Bull charging r.; above, torch; below neck, EY; in exergue two fishes. This coin is a beautiful type and is well struck and nicely toned. Corrosion and cleaning scratches on the surface, however, allow us to price it very reasonably. VF+............................................................................................ 1000 BRUTTIUM, CAULONIA; c. 525-5000 BC, Stater, 7.59g. Noe, Caulonia-7. Obv: Apollo Catharsius advancing r., raising lustral branch behind head in r. hand, and holding running figure also holding branches on outstretched l. arm; on r., stag. Rx: Same type, incuse. All elements of this important early Greek type are visible, but corroded surfaces on the obverse make it inexpensive. aVF................................ 2750 Magnificent Pedigreed Akragas Tetradrachm SICILY, AKRAGAS; 410-406 BC, Tetradrachm, 16.98g. SNG Lloyd-818, RizzoTav 11, # 1, Seltman-NM 1948, p. 3, # 6, Kraay-/Hirmer 178. Obv: Quadriga r. First horse looks back, driver is naked except for scarf. Nike flying l. crowning driver; crab in exergue. Rx: Two eagles on a hare which rests on a rock. Ethnic AKPAΓANTINON retrograde. Ex Friedinger-Pranter collection, purchased c. 1930-1950. A great coin from the time when Akragas was facing the attack of the Carthaginians, and one of the most beloved ancient coin types, with a racing quadriga derived from Syracuse on the obverse and two eagles about to devour a captured hare on the reverse. The highest parts of the relief weakly struck. Slightly doublestruck on obverse. Otherwise well-centered and sharply struck. This masterpiece would make an incredible addition to any collection of Greek coins. EF.............................. 65000 SICILY, AKRAGAS; 213-210 BC, Punic Half Shekel, 3.32g. Obv: Laureate head of Zeus r. Rx: ΑΚΡΑΓΑΝ—[ΤΙΝΩΝ], eagle with spread wings standing l., large T in left field. Some porosity on both sides. Reverse slightly off-center. Otherwise, nicely toned, sharply struck and attractive. VF................................................................. 750 SICILY, KATANE; 420-410 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.05g. Same dies as Gulbenkian-185, SNG ANS-1256, and Jameson-541. Obv: Quadriga r., crowned by flying Nike. Rx: Laureate head of Apollo r., wild parsley leaf behind, ethnic KATANAION before. A chef-d’oeuvre of the ‘Maestro dalla foglia’, this coin was struck when the Chalcidian cities Katane, Naxos and Leontinoi were holding their ground against the increasing supremacy of Syracuse. (The Leontinians were forced to leave their homes in 422 BC.) Nevertheless, this coin of Katane owes its galloping quadriga obverse type to a Syracusan prototype. The reverse head established a now appearance of the god Apollo, thereby anticipating the relevant dies of Euainetos and his school (after 409). Slightly doublestruck and worn on obverse, the reverse better. Struck on an unusually large flan. Lightly toned and very attractive. VF............ 8000 SICILY, LEONTINI; c. 450-430 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.06g. SNG Cop-347, SNG Ashmolean-1785. Obv: Head of Apollo laureate r. Rx: Lion’s head r.; around, four barley-corns and ethnic ΛΕΟΝΤΙΝΟΝ. Both sides slightly worn and with some corrosion, the reverse being better than the obverse. Otherwise perfectly centered and nicely toned. An exemplary work of early classical art. VF............................ 750 SICILY, SYRACUSE; 430-420 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.20g. Boehringer-642. Obv: Quadriga r., horses crowned by Victory. Rx: ΣΥPAKOΣION Arethusa with hair in sakkos ornamented with meander pattern; four dolphins around. Ex Coin Galleries, December 2005, lot 26. With a well struck obverse. Some contact marks on reverse, but with a very sharp Greek meander pattern on the saccos of Arethusa. EF...... 4500 Lovely Toned Syracuse Tetradrachm SICILY, SYRACUSE; 474-450 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.39g. Boehringer-571. Obv: Quadriga r. crowned by flying Nike, sea monster r. in exergue. Rx: Head of Arethusa r. with wavy hair bound with taenia, which passes three times over her head and around her hair held in a knot on her neck. She wears earrings and a pearl necklace with a pendant at the front. Before and behind her head, ethnic ΣVRAKOΣI - ON; around her head, four dolphins. Flan a little tight, but well-centered, sharply struck and with some lustrous areas. EF......................................................................... 8750 SICILY, SYRACUSE, TIMOLEON AND THE THIRD DEMOCRACY; c. 344317 BC, Hemidrachm, 1.83g. SNG ANS-519. Obv: Head of Athena facing front and slightly l., wearing a crested Attic helmet, three dolphins around. Rx: Naked rider on horseback r. Worn and somewhat corroded, with some dings and scratches, the rare obverse type nonetheless clear and well-centered. Fine......................................... 200 SICULO-PUNIC; c. 345-320 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.27g. Jenkins - SNR 56, 1977, 163Y. Obv: Head of Arethusa l. in the manner of Euainetos; below chin, shell; four dolphins swimming around head; dotted border. Rx: Horse’s head l. with palm tree symbol behind; Punic letters below (‘MMHNT). The obverse closely copying Euainetos’ head of Arethusa from Syracusan tetradrachms, even reproducing the cockle-shell symbol below her chin. Purchased from HJB Ltd. Fixed Price Inventory in 2000. Choice EF............................................................................................... 8500

30. SICILY, SICULO-PUNIC; 320/15-300 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.21g. Jenkins-232 072/R199. Obv: Head of Arethusa l. with three dolphins around. Rx: Horse’s head with palm to r.; Punic ethnic below. Only two recorded by Jenkins (ANS and BM). There is a small die break running from the nymph’s lips through the tip of her nose towards the dolphin’s tail. Attractively toned. aEF.............................................. 8750 31. HANNIBAL AT TARENTUM; Quarter Shekel, 1.94g. Obv: Head of Tanit l. Rx: Horse standing r. Ex HJB BBS 146, 29 November 2005, lot 36. This coin was issued during a brief period when Hannibal held the city of Tarentum. He captured the city through a deception carried out by a group of Tarentine noblemen who tricked the Roman night guard at the city gates, allowing the Carthaginians to enter the city. The head of Tanit is exceptionally well-struck; a thin flan crack extends from the edge of the coin to her chin. The horse’s head on reverse is off flan, which is common for this issue. Ex Gemini VIII, 14 April 2011, lot 24. The obverse doublestruck, the reverse with large bubbles and weak areas, such as often occur on these products right from the silver mines. Obv: Head of Herakles r. wearing lion-skin headdress. Rx: Zeus enthroned l., monogram in l. field. Nice iridescent toning. From one of the most prolific Alexander mints in Asia Minor. EF............................................................ 250 43. MACEDONIA, ALEXANDER III THE GREAT; 336-323 BC, Drachm, Elephant, Chios, c. 270-265 BC, 4.09g. Unpublished. Rx: Symbol: Elephant head 3/4 left facing with large ears and tusks. This symbol surely relates to the victory of Antiochus III over barbarians in 269 BC. The Galatian tribes crossed the Hellespont in winter of 278/7. Some of them served briefly as mercenaries in the army of Nicomedes of Bithynia, but then they were set loose to ravage Asia Minor. The three tribes divided Asia Minor into raiding districts. The Trocmi took the Hellespontine coast, the Tolistobogii claimed Aeolis and Ionia, and the Tectosages drew the inland. Places known to have been raided or threatened/extorted include Cyzicus (278/7), the sanctuary at Didyma (277/6), Priene and Erythrae (270s), Thyatira, Laocidea on the Lycus, and perhaps Limyra or other places in Lycia. In 269 BC, Antiochus I drove the barbarians out of Asia Minor. Antiochus I was honored as Soter (Savior) by the Ionian League and at Bargylia in Caria. The “Elephant Victory” was commemorated by terracotta statuettes at Myrina and by a poet from Magnesia ad Sipylum. Minor weakness and dirt on obverse. aVF........................................................................ 400 Memphis Mint 44. Rx: Zeus seated l. holding eagle and scepter, star in l. field, reengraved over sickle (?). See Price’s B27 for a “barbarous” imitation in the British Museum which includes a similar “sickle” symbol. Head of Hermes flatly struck and partially off flan on reverse, a few old light scratches and a scrape on obverse. A slightly better coin was estimated at 275,000 Swiss francs in a recent sale. The rare coins of Pheneus were minted in the short period of freedom and prosperity for the city after the wars between the Boeotians (led by the general Epaminondas) and the Spartans, and before the conquest of mainland Greece by Philip II and Alexander the Great. While the obverse type harks back to the popular Arethusa head of the Syracusan decadrachms, the reverse is original: the local hero Arkas, ancestor of the Arkadians, being rescued as a young child by the god Hermes. Being the son of Zeus and the nymph Kallisote, Arkas was in danger of falling victim, as his mother did, to the jealous rage of Zeus’ wife Hera. Therefore Hermes brought the child to his own mother, the nymph Maia, who lived in the mountains near Pheneus, where Arkas then grew up. Even today, the Pheneus valley remains a place to escape to and relax, especially for hasseled contemporary Athenians. Toned EF.............................. 22500 81. Crawford catalogued all of Caesar’s elephant denarii under a single number, but Woytek has shown that these denarii come in two main styles, obviously corresponding to two mints. Our coin is from the less common of the two mints, showing a more crudely rendered elephant who appears to be standing still, his two front legs and two back legs being virtually parallel to each other, whereas on coins of the other mint the elephant steps briskly to the right, his right foreleg and right back leg slanting forward, while his left foreleg and left back leg slant backward. aEF............... 2500 Exceptional Toned Caesar Denarius 136. ROMAN IMPERIAL SILVER

Two-Thousandth Anniversary of Death of Augustus

In connection with this anniversary which will occur on 19 August 2014, we are pleased to offer a selection of denarii of Octavian/Augustus, featuring one of the finest known examples of Augustus’ rare denarius showing the herald of his Saecular Games on the obverse and a portrait of Divus Julius Caesar on the reverse (lot 185). This coin, and many of the others, commemorate important events of Augustus’ rise to power followed by his reign as the first Roman emperor: ● Appearance of a comet taken to signal the ascension of Julius Caesar to the heavens in 44 BC: lots 162, 185. ● Alliance with Mark Antony against the assassins of Caesar: lots 141-142 above. ● Agrippa’s defeat of Sextus Pompey off Sicily, 36 BC: lots 149-150, 152, 170. ● Erection of a temple of Mars the Avenger after defeat and punishment of Caesar’s assassins: lot 184. ● Defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium, 31 BC: lots 169, 171. ● Completion of Senate House, begun by Caesar, 29 BC: lot 155. ● Honors of 27 BC, including name Augustus: lots 176-181. ● Erection of temple to Jupiter the Thunderer, after close escape from lightning strike in Spain: lot 175. ● Recovery of lost military standards from the Parthians, 20 BC: lots 157, 161. ● Celebration of Saecular Games, 17 BC: lot 185. ● Presentation of Agrippa as prospective successor: lot 186. ● Presentation of his grandsons Gaius and Lucius Caesars as prospective successors: lots 172-174, also 384 (provincial). ● Triumph of Augustus’ actual successor Tiberius over the Germans, 13 AD: lot 190. ● Several coins also refer to interesting myths, Pegasus (lot 158), Tarpeia buried by shields (159), and the Caledonian Boar (165), while three coins will be of interest to specialists because they are unpublished varieties of known types (lots 172, 175, 182).

The bulla around Gaius’ neck signifies that he was still a child and had not yet assumed the toga of manhood (J. Pollini, Gaius Caesar on horseback, Mus. Notes 30, 1985). Portrait left was very rare in this issue. For the C CAES AVGVS F reverse type, only three aurei with portrait left seem to be known, from two different obverse dies. Our new denarius with portrait left is from one of the same two obverse dies, Giard’s D320, pl. XIX, 70/1a-b, with

With the other reverse type of the issue, IMP XIIII, Barbarian offers child to Augustus seated on platform, portrait left is attested on just three coins, two aurei and one denarius, all three from the same pair of dies: Giard-66-67, p. 95, pl. This reverse type usually had the legend written horizontally across the field, IOV - TON. With the legend written vertically, e.g. IOVIS on left, TONANT on right, or with the legend written in exergue, as on our piece with IOVIS.TON, it is very rare. With legend in exergue, the type has apparently so far only been known with portrait left on the obverse: RIC-65 (R4-3), citing a worn and damaged specimen in Oxford (Ashmolean Sylloge-49); another VF specimen, from the same pair of dies, was in Glendining 1952, Ryan Part 5, lot 1981. Our coin with portrait right is an unlisted variety, and seems to be from the same reverse die as the Oxford and Ryan examples with portrait left. This distinction seems doubtful; the two wreath types are hard to tell apart. He indeed created an entry for such denarii, his no. 124, but wrote “No specimens found.” However, CoinArchives Pro contains eight further denarii like ours, with two of the horses looking back, suggesting that this variety is really not so rare, and should have been found by Giard and RIC! Metcalf, The Tell Kalak Hoard and Trajan’s Arabian Mint, Museum Notes 20, 1975, p. 99. The style of the dies, however, suggests that they were produced by mint of Rome engravers. aVF.... 200 222. This interesting reverse type is usually under-described, for example by Cohen 9: “Abundantia seated right, resting her elbow on her chair and holding wheat ears; before her, a child standing; in the distance, a vessel”. Mattingly, BMC 304, corrected the name of the divinity to Annona, and recognized that she and the little figure were each holding two ends of a piece of cloth between them, so that it could serve as a receptacle for wheat ears. Mattingly termed this receptacle an “open bag”, but it is probably in fact the end of Annona’s cloak; compare the parallel type of Septimius Severus, BMC pl. 57.3, where Annona holds out a fold of her drapery

ANTIQUITIES SCULPTURE 461. PHOENICIAN IMPORTANT LIMESTONE HEAD OF A DEITY, ca. 1000 BC. The piece is sculpted from hard dolomitic limestone typical of the eastern Mediterranean coast of southern Lebanon or northern Israel. The face is deeply pre-classical in character – that is, dating from before Alexander the Great’s injection of Greek artistic ideals into the Near East. Its overall monumental scale suggests the civilizations of the Phoenician city states rather than the more modest and more general Syro-Phoenician cultures and attribution. The facial features of the piece strongly follow the conventions of the “Assyrian” Ivories, which are in fact Phoenician ivories. Such features conform nicely to typical Syro-Phoenician stylistic conventions, which derive mainly from Egyptian and to a lesser extent Mesopotamian influences. Hence the eyes have a drilled out dot for a pupil and the eyebrows have been separately carved out, but not joined as in the Mesopotamian fashion, to receive separate inlays – the traces of which still remain. The nose is rounded and heavy and the mouth, straight and horizontal. The hair had circular curls following the top line of the forehead and long parallel bands of straight hair cascading down the sides of the head and gently curling at the bottom. The piece is unfinished in the back and has elements of a corroded out iron anchoring pin in the base of the neck. Significantly, the head also forms a hollow basin and retains thick deposits of calcium carbonate consistent with it having contained many generations of evaporated liquid. Hollow headed deities are known in the Syro-Phoenician and Punic contexts but whether they were ritual vessels or the hollow represented how the deity was somehow invested with power, propitiation or purpose is not known. The piece has scattered abrasions and large chips to the top rim. Large scale SyroPhoenician sculpture is extraordinarily rare, so this is a very significant and culturally important piece. Provenance: Ex Chicago estate, acquired in Italy before 1970, and cleared through an FBI database for missing or stolen art with further details and documents on request. H. 12” (31 cm)............................................................ 250,000 462. ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF AMAZON, Roman Imperial Period ca. 140-160 AD. A fine marble head of a Amazon with a mural crown. The head has a well preserved surface, the Amazon is attractive and she has distinct Classical character. She originally belonged to an architectural relief since her hair becomes less detailed toward the back and does not curve around the back of her head. In spite of her Classical derivation, the goddess clearly dates from the Roman Imperial Period. She has an emphatic quality and fullness of form that are unmistakably Roman. The city-wall that she wears like a crown is also rendered in a simple, direct, and typically Roman manner. Moreover, sculptures with a mural crown are hard to find before the Imperial Period. The generous, easy carving of the head strongly suggests that this piece originated in Asia Minor. Comparisons can be made with sculptures in Ephesus of the second half of the first century CE. A head of Zeus from the Nymphaeum of Pollio of 93 CE has similar calm, clear forms and sharply defined locks of hair. Another example from an Imperial statue of Apollo from Ephesus is comparably linear. The minimal use of drill work in the hair is a common feature. While it is evident that this sculpture derives from the Classical Asiatic tradition, it shows differences that show bearing on its chronology. The two first-century heads

from Ephesus previously mentioned have more firmly defined locks of hair. In this Amazon, the hair has a sketchier, more fluent quality. A few Asiatic sculptures of the Antonine date, on the other hand, have a similar treatment of the hair. For example, the veiled goddess, possibly Demeter, in the monumental relief from the Agora of Smyrna, rebuilt around 180 CE, has a similar modeling although its face is fuller and softer. The pillar figures of Amazons from the Ephesos Theatre, dated between 150 and 175, also avoid conspicuous drill work and their sharply linear strands of hair have a texture that is highly similar to this sculpture. This piece has s clearer more Classicistic design than the Ephesus pillar figures; in front view she is more firmly and sharply defined although in this respect, she is closer to the Demeter from Smyrna. On balance, an Antonine date- perhaps an early one, about 140160- seems appropriate for this piece. The conception of the Amazon is based on Classical sculptures of about 440 BCE. The most probable source of inspiration can be found among the various Amazons carved by the famous sculptors Polykleitos, Pheidias, and Kresilas for the temple of Artemis at Ephesus. All these Amazons, which are known in many copies, have gracefully elongated oval faces, and their hair is pulled back from a central part in regular waves. The asymmetries in the head may make it possible eventually to connect her with a specific model. The head does not, however, represent the Ephesian Artemis, nor is it an exact copy of one of the famous Amazons, whose heads are tilted to the side. While the Amazon seems to tilt her head forward to look down from her architectural setting, the centerline of her face is vertical, since she holds her head upright to support a mural crown. The crown identifies her as the protector of a city or cities. She could be Tyche, Cybele, Rhea, or the goddess of a specific city. The last alternative seems by far the best. According to legend, many cities of Asia Minor were founded by Amazons. On coinage of numerous Asiatic cities of Roman times, an Amazonian founder wears a mural crown. Among these cities are Cyme, Kibyra, Magesia ad Sipylum, Smyrna, Ancyra, and Cremna, and many more could probably be found. It is very likely that the piece represents one of these Amazonian city founders. The theme may be common on coinage, but it is rather rare in marble sculpture. Not only do we have an attractive Classicistic sculpture of Roman times, we have an interesting and (sculpturally) rare iconography. H. 13” W. 12 1/2” (33 x 31.8 cm).............................................. 175,000 BRONZES 463. LURISTAN LARGE BRONZE SWORD, ca. 1200-800 BC. Lobed pommel with cast central lines and inscribed geometric designs. The hilt is also inscribed with various lines. There is a squared midrib. The hilt and blade would have been cast separately and then connected and refired. The hilt and blade have been rejoined, but this is not unusual. Light green patina and tan incrustation. Ex Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. BBS 125, lot 191. February 27, 2002. L. 36 1/4” (92 cm)................................... 6500 464. CHINESE WARRING STATES PERIOD BRONZE SWORD, ca. 4th-3rd Century BC. This is a superb example of ancient Chinese weaponry in an excellent state of preservation. The bronze sword has a beautifully shaped and symmetrically balanced blade with a subtle central midrib and slanted edges. The overall blade has an even green patina with some raised portions of blue azurite and the handle has three separate sections for the original probably leather wrapping. This piece comes from a group of Chinese antiquities that originally was purchased from Nagatani, a respected dealer in Asian art in the Chicago area in the 1950’s and 60’s. L. 20 7/8” (53 cm).................................................................................................................. 4500 PRE-COLUMBIAN 465. PRE-COLUMBIAN SEATED GOLD MONKEY HOLDING A COCA LEAF, ca. 14th Century, AD. The piece comes from northern coastal Peru and likely belongs to the Chimu people, who were absorbed into the Inca Empire before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Hammered from a large thick sheet of gold, the repousse seated monkey holding a coca leave over his feet and looks upward, his curled prehensile tail running up his back. The piece has piercings around its edges suggesting it was attached to a hat or served as a type of finial. It has scattered dents and crush marks around its base. At about 115 grams of 22 karat, or finer, gold, this little monkey represents a substantial piece of Pre-Columbian gold that escaped the smelting pots of the conquistadors. Provenance: Sotheby’s Park Bernet, May 22, 1980, Lot 97A with the receipt and further documents on request. H. 3 1/2” (9cm)... ........................................................................................................................... 45000 ASIAN ART 466. JAPANESE GILT BRONZE BUDDHIST SHRINE, 19th Century. This Buddhist gilt bronze shrine dates from the late Edo to early Meiji period in the middle 19th Century. It represents among the finest examples of Japanese metal craft and artistry that occurred during Japan’s rapid modernization, when it’s exquisitely refined metal workers turned away from the traditional crafts like sword furniture to increasingly elaborate sculptures like the present example and the later “Meiji” bronzes. The piece is more typical of one produced for the domestic Japanese market as a personal shrine or zushi. It is made in four basic parts: a square base with lion corners, an elaborate double lotus base, complete with movable lotus seeds, a main shrine to receive the deity with four movable double doors and an elaborate roof complete with support struts and a tall Buddhist spire surmounted by the chintamani or the wish granting Buddhist jewel of wisdom. Scattered green corrosion to the surface with minor components expertly recast and restored. Provenance: London Collection. 33 ½” (85 cm).................................................................................. 25000
