Area of flat strike on horse’s head and neck. VF..................................... 1350 ATREBATES & REGNI; 55-45. BC, Stater, 5.87g. Van Arsdell-216-1. Obv: Plain. Rx: Stylized, mane-less horse with triple tail galloping right; above, deformed charioteer (resembling a fish); below, wheel; pellet in lozenge to left. Ex Gemini XII, 11 January 2015, lot 2. aEF......................................................................................................... 1875 UNCERTAIN IONIA; 650-600 BC, 1/96 Stater, 0.17g. SNG Kayhan-691 (1/192, one pellet). Obv: Two pellets. Rx: rough incuse square. Ex Gemini XII, 11 January 2015, lot 149. EF...................................................................................................................... 1875 IONIA, EPHESUS; c. 625-600 BC, EL Trite, 4.74g. Weidauer-40 (same dies). Obv: Spotted stag grazing r.; above, retrograde, ΦΑΝΕΟΣ (“Of Phanes”). Rx: Two rough geometric incuse punches (Reverse “F”). Ex Jonathan Rosen Collection Unusually nice for this issue. Stag has complete head with eye. Legend is sharp but the tops of some of the letters are off flan. aEF....................................................................................... 57000 UNCERTAIN CITY IN IONIA; 550-530 BC, Hecte (1/6 Stater), 2.30g. Obv: Horsefly. Rx: Incuse square with rough surface. Traité II 2, 1870, pl. 152, 16 (same obverse die, but struck in silver, attributed to Ephesus), cf. Hauck & Aufhauser 19 (2006), lot 108, and Tkalec (29 Feb. 2000), lot 118). The hemihecte Triton VIII (2005), lot 407 could be part of the same issue. The second recorded example of a very surprising coin, first because its obverse die seems to show not a bee, as one might initially think, but a horsefly, and second because the same obverse die was also used to strike a silver coin, the reverse there showing a rosette within an incuse square. Where exactly these coins were struck cannot yet be established. Extremely rare. One a few examples on the market, with one sold in Gemini X, 13 January 2013, lot 96 at 40,000 USD hammer. This example is slightly more worn with isolated areas of porosity. aEF.......................................... 24500 IONIA, PHOCAEA; 600 BC, EL Hecte, 2.59g. Bodenstedt-29. Obv: Three seals swimming around central ringed pellet. Rx: Irregular incuse. This is one of the earliest issues of Phocaea, as indicated by its low catalogue number in Bodenstedt. EF....... 4200 IONIA, PHOCAEA; 600, EL Hecte, 2.56g. Bodenstedt-29. Obv: Griffin’s head l. with open jaws, to r. seal swimming upwards. Rx: Irregular four-part incuse. Tip of griffin’s beak off flan. Von Fritze -; Hurter & Liewald, SNR 81 (2002)-p. 28, no. 17; SNG von Aulock-7241. Obv: Bearded head of Heracles l., wearing a helmet in the form of the head of a sea monster; below, tunny fish l. Rx: Four part incuse square. A delightful little gem. The imagery is fascinating with the head of Heracles wearing a helmet in the form of a sea monster. A tunny fish is below signifying the Greek city of Cyzicus. Nice relief with sharp details. EF................... 3600

Lovely Archaic Head MYSIA, CYZICUS; c. 550-475 BC, EL Hecte (1/6 Stater), 2.68g. cf. von Fritze-66, pl. II, 19 (stater); Rosen-447; Greenwell, Cyzicus-78, pl. III, 31. Obv: Archaic male head l., with pointed beard; hair hanging long behind and represented by dots; below, tunny fish l. Rx: Four part incuse square. Some wear on high points but otherwise a lovely specimen with high relief and wonderful detail. EF................................................................... 3600 Athena on Electrum MYSIA, CYZICUS; c. 500-470 BC, EL Hecte (1/6 Stater), 2.67g. von Fritze-67, pl. II, 20 (stater); Boston-1447; SNG von Aulock-1187. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena l. Below, tunny-fish l. Rx: Four part incuse square. An elegant type from the time of the transition between late archaic and early classical style. Athena wears an Attic helmet as on Athenian coins, but the Cyzicene coin does not copy Athens and was by a much more talented engraver than those at the contemporary Attic mint. A fabulous piece! Perfectly centered with sharp details and high relief. Lustrous surfaces. Mint State................ 3700 MYSIA, CYZICUS; 550-500 BC, EL Hemihecte (1/12 Stater), 1.37g. NFA XX, 10 March 1988, lot 709; for the type cf. von Fritze-97, pl. III, 16 (stater) and Rosen Collection-473 (hecte). Obv: Chimera l. on tunny fish l., forelegs extended in semicrouch. Rx: Quadripartite incuse square. VF............................................................1150 MYSIA, CYZICUS; c. 550-475 BC, EL Hecte (1/6 Stater), 2.72g. cf. von Fritze-112, pl. III, 31 (stater). Obv: Nude youth kneeling l., holding tunny fish by tail. Rx: Four part square incuse. A brilliantly defined figure. Traces of overstriking. Von Fritze shows this type as a stater, but corresponding hectes, twelfths, and twenty-fourth staters are also known today. Near Mint State.................................................................................... 2700 MYSIA, CYZICUS; c. 550-475 BC, ELHecte (1/6 Stater), 2.65g. cf. von Fritze-129, pl. IV, 15 (stater); Greenwell, Cyzicus-75, pl. III, 27. Obv: Frontal gorgoneion with protuding tongue, tunny fish l. below; a test mark “x” on left. Rx: Four part incuse square. Tunny fish is off flan, but gorgon is in incredibly nice relief and well-centered. A fantastic piece. BM-29, Paris-1, RIC-24 (R3), Calico-311, C-3 (150 Fr.). Obv: TI CAESAR DIVI - AVG F AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Tiberius r. Rx: DIVOS AVGVST - DIVI F Laureate head of Divus Augustus r.; above, a star. Tiberius struck this coin, so his portrait is traditionally described as occupying the obverse. On our specimen, however, metal wells up beyond the edge of the die at 7-8h on the Tiberius side, suggesting that Tiberius’ die was in fact the reverse die, so Divus Augustus occupies the obverse. Scarce issue struck on a large flan. Bold VF....................................12000 Exquisite Aureus SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS; 193-211 AD, Rome, 207 AD, Aureus, 7.22g. BM358, Calico-2529, C-605. Very rare, apparently only the second specimen recorded. Göbl knew only a single example of this aureus with this bust type, in Berlin, whose dies however cannot easily be compared with those of our piece, since Göbl did not illustrate the Berlin coin in his monograph. Extremely nice aureus of Gallienus with none of the nicks and bends usually found on his aurei. Rx: VICTORIA CONSΛB IB Cross potent on base and three steps; in exergue, CONOB. The Interregnum aurei of Carthage are much rarer than the issues of Alexandria. The Carthage mint differs from Alexandria in that the future emperor Heraclius is beardless. This coin is so rare that this is the first example we remembering handling in 51 years. A great rarity of historical importance in that it established that the reign lasted until 611 AD. Mint State..31500 CONSTANS II, 641-668 AD; Constantinople, c. 651/52, Solidus, 4.48g. Obv: C P E TETR[ICVS] C AVG Bust radiate r. Rx: PAX - [AV]G Pax standing l. holding branch and transverse scepter. It is chiefly the coins that provide evidence, not accepted by everybody, that Tetricus I made his son joint Augustus for a short time at the end of his reign. Rare antoniniani show jugate busts of Tetricus I and II with the legend IMPP TETRICI PII AVGG; and an antoninianus in Oxford that shares its reverse die with several of these jugate-bust coins shows on the obverse a radiate portrait of Tetricus II alone, with legend IMP C P E TETRICVS C AVG. See C.H.V. Sutherland, An Unpublished Coin...of Tetricus II, Museum Notes XI, 1964, pp. 151-8, pl. XXIX. Now a few other antoniniani of Tetricus II alone naming him Augustus are reported by RIC-236, 250, 253, and 290-1, but these all appear to be just ancient imitations, not official issues. Our coin may be only the second such coin recorded which is actually official, though its omission of IMP at the beginning of the obverse legend is admittedly odd. A remarkable and very rare obverse type calling Carus “Master and God” and showing his portrait facing that of the sun god. Analyses have shown that the rare coins marked XI contained about 9% silver, while those marked XXI contained about 4.5% silver. The coins marked XI must therefore have been worth twice as much as those marked XXI, and “XI” must have meant “ten parts copper, one part silver”, whereas “XXI” meant “twenty parts copper, one part silver”. Horus is depicted nude with a side-lock and the two goddesses are depicted in tight fitting tunics modeled in deep relief. The piece has nice dark green glossy surfaces. No restoration. Ex Midwest Collection formed before 1967. H. 1 1/2” (4 cm). . .950 292. EGYPTIAN GREEN FAIENCE BES AMULET, Saite Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664-525 BC. An amuletic plaque of the dwarf-god Bes, his face rendered in traditional fashion with plumed headdress, prominent ears, and a beard of incised lines. Bes was a protective deity who frightened evil away with his scowling expression. The amulet is composed of faience, glazed green. The reverse features an arrangement of glyphs including the nefer sign, meaning “good” as “beautiful”; the renpet sign, meaning “year”; and topmost, the solar disk glyph re with the horned glyph wepet below it meaning “to inaugurate” or “to open”. Together, the inscription wishes the owner a good or beautiful opening of the year; or in other words, a “Happy New Year.” This was a gift amulet for an annual holiday, perforated for stringing to wear in a necklace. In very good condition. H. 1 1/16” (2.7 cm). . ...............................750 293. EGYPTIAN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE PALE BLUE-GREEN FAIENCE DJED-PILLAR, Late Period, probably Saite, ca. 715-330 BC. Extraordinarily fine and large pale blue-green faience djed-pillar. Although the djed-pillar is attested from earliest times, exactly what it represents is uncertain. It may be a stylized tree trunk with the branches chopped off, or it may represent the four pillars that support the sky superimposed upon one another. Ultimately the djed-pillar was considered to represent Osiris’ backbone. As a hieroglyph, djed meant “stability,” and this amulet therefore imbued its owner with stability and endurance. Chapter 155 of the Book of the Dead prescribes placement of a djed-pillar amulet at the throat of the mummy, to transform the deceased into an “equipped spirit” in the entourage of Osiris. Drilled crosswise through the middle, this amulet would have been sewn onto the bandages of a mummy, either at the throat or elsewhere on the torso. L. 2” (5 cm). . ..............500 294. EGYPTIAN FAIENCE PLAQUE OF KHONSU, Late Period, ca. 664-525 BC. This rectangular plaque of blue-glazed faience depicts the moon-god Khonsu in frontal view. The son of Amun and Mut, Khonsu is typically represented as a youth, head shaved except for a long sidelock, and wearing a broad-collar and a uraeus cobra on his brow. Whereas Khonsu is usually shown in the tight-fitting wrappings of a mummy, the fact that he is here depicted as nude emphasizes his youthful aspect. This plaque would have placed its owner under the protection of Khonsu or permitted him to assimilate Khonsu’s attributes and characteristics. Broken and reglued at chest level. Mounted. H. 2 1/4” (5.7 cm). . .....................................................................700 295. EGYPTIAN LARGER BLUE FAIENCE PATAIKOS AMULET, Late Period, ca.

This is a wonderful example of the Hellenization of the Egyptian gods after the conquest of Alexander. Harpocrates, son of Osiris and Isis, is clearly modeled in Classical form to every degree except the crown ornament and the gesture of touching the finger to the lips- an identifying characteristic of Harpocrates. The piece is beautifully modeled and balanced, its torso tilting gently to the left and a cape tied at the shoulder closely following the contours of his body. The typical unglazed face retains some of the original black and red pigments on the face and hair, and, unusually the flesh colored pigment of the face which often leaves no trace. This is an authentic, antique map showing the reaches of the Ottoman Empire at the height of its power with comparisons to the Empires of Alexander the Great and the Romans. The map was published out of Amsterdam by Henri Abraham Chatelain circa 1719. This impressive map is one of the only maps of its era to cover the entire Ottoman Empire. From southern Europe and Northern Africa, the map extends as far east to include the Arabian Peninsula, Persia and the Caspian Sea. Two insert maps include a smaller version of the map extending a bit further east to include the Ganges River, and a map of Greece that notes Macedonia (the birthplace of Alexander the Great). The map pays great attention to detail noting hundreds of towns and large cities, mountain ranges, and river systems. On either side of the map are extensive tables noting the exact locations of important towns and states throughout the map. Also included alongside the tables are lengthy descriptions recounting the history of Alexander the Great and the Roman Empire.

Condition: Map is in B+ condition with areas of mild damp staining. . ...............750 328. EUROPE EASTERN TABULA RUSSIAE EX AUTOGRAPHO, QUOD DELINEANDUM CURAVIT FOEDOR FILIUS TZARIS BOROIS DESUMTA …. MDCXIIII, By: Hessel Gerrits / Willem Janszoon Blaeu Date: 1613 / 1635 (circa) Amsterdam Dimensions: 16.75 x 21.5 inches (42.5 x 54.6 cm)

This is an authentic antique map of Russia with an insert plan of Moscow and a view of Archangelsckagoroda. The map was originally engraved by Hessel Gerrits in 1613 and later reissued by Willem Blaeu beginning in 1634.

Hessel Gerrits created this influential map of Russia from a compilation of manuscripts brought back from Russia by Isaac Massa, who lived in Russia from 1601 - 1609. During that time, a promising young Czar of Russia named Fedor Godunov II was murdered when he was 16 years old. That period of Russian history was known as the time of troubles. The plan of Moscow was based on Czar Fedor’s draft. It would become the most reproduced map of Moscow for about 100 years, used by Braun & Hogenberg, Matthaus Merian, and Gabriel Bodenehr, just to name a few. Finally, the view of Archangelsckagoroda (Archangel) is important as it was Russia’s only northern port until the founding of St Petersburg in 1703.

The map depicts hundreds of villages and cities, forests, and river systems. Near the center of the map, a “great wall,” known as the Zasechnaya bar is depicted running from the Volga River to just east of Lithuania. The Zasechnaya bar was system of fortifications, used by Russia to protect against the invasion of Mongol-Tatar and Crimean troops, as well as a foothold in the attack on opponent. The Caspian Sea is quite misshapen as very little was known of the region, particularly the eastern side. The map is adorned with sailing ships, two compass roses, three figures in Russian attire, and a decorative title cartouche.

Condition: Map is in B condition, with a diagonal tear in the lower right that extends 2 inches into the image and has been professionally repaired on the verso. Map displays lovely hand coloring and full margins. . ..............................................................2500 329. MIDDLE EAST / HOLY LAND TURCICI IMPERII DESCRIPTIO, By: Abraham Ortelius Date: 1595 (published) Antwerp Dimensions: 15 x 19.5 inches (31 x 33.8 cm)

This is an authentic antique map of the Middle East, Turkey and the Eastern Mediterreanean by Abraham Ortelius. The map was published out of Antwerp in 1595 as part of the Latin edition of “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.”

The map is based on Ortelius’ own map of Asia, which was derived from the work of Italian mapmaker Giacomo Gastaldi of 1561. It shows a relatively accurate depiction of the Red Sea but a misshapen Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea. While the coastline of the Arabian Peninsula is shown with great detail, many of the inland place names and their locations are taken from antiquity and legend rather than actual reports of exploration.

The map is loaded with detail, showing mountains chains, and river systems, as well as numerous villages and important cities, such as Rome, Tripoli, Athens, Constantinople, Cairo, Jerusalem, and Mecca. Decorative elements within the map include four sailing ships (two of which are engaged in battle), a sea monster roaming the Black Sea and a strapwork title cartouche supported by two female, winged sea creatures.

Condition: Map is in A condition, wide margins and no separations. There is some light toning along the edge of the paper and very minor offsetting near the top portion of the centerfold. Map displays exception hand coloring. . .................................1250 330. U.K. / IRELAND CAMBRIAE TYPUS AUCTORE HUMFREDO LHUYDO…, Date: 1579 (Published) Amsterdam Dimensions: 14.5 x 19.5 inches (36.8 cm x 49.5 cm) Description: This is an authentic, antique map of Wales published out of Amsterdam in the 1579 Spanish edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.

This is the first state of the first printed map of Wales. The map was based off of Humphrey Lhuyd’s map of Wales from 1568, as well as Mercator’s 8-sheet wall map of the British Isles circa 1564. The map details several rivers, mountains ranges, forests and notes numerous place names throughout. In the top right, the coast of Ireland with Dublin is shown. The map is embellished with a sea monster, sailing ship, distance scale in English miles, and an early baroque style title cartouche.

Condition: This map is in B condition with extended side margins. A paper fold appears in the lower left corner that is likely contemporaneous with the printing of the map. Near the center of the map, an area of oxidation has created two very small holes. Map displays original coloring with some light offsetting.. 14.5 x 19.5 inches (36.8 cm x 49.5 cm). . ............................................................................................750 331. UNITED STATES UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CORRECTED & IMPROVED FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES, By: Benjamin Warner Date: 1820 (dated). Dimensions: 25.5 x 16.5 inches (64.75 x 41.9 cm).

Warner’s map of the United States was one of the first separately issued maps to show the the country occupying lands from coast to coast. Much of the detail in the western portion of the map was based on maps by Lewis and Clark, Humboldt, Melish and Pike. This map is one of only a few maps issued from 1818 to 1820 that show mythical rivers of the west including the Buenaventura River that runs from the Great Salt Lake (only half of which is mapped) to the Bay of Francisco. Within the Rockies (just north of the 42nd parallel) is a note stating “Clark’s canoes stop 3000 miles from the Mississippi.” Texas is shown within a very large Spanish Territory, just south of the Arkansas Territory that encompassed much of present day Oklahoma. The false island of Philippeaux is still shown to exist within Lake Superior. Midwestern forts, Indian Tribes, and California Missions are shown with detail throughout the map. This type of map is a must have for anyone looking to complete a U.S. western expansion map collection.

Condition: Map is in B condition with some small fold splits (restored on verso), minor toning, and some narrow margins. . ..........................................................1500 332. MEXICO CARTE DES REPUBLIQUES UNIES DU MEXIQUE, By: Johann Georg Heck Date: 1834 (dated) Paris Dimensions: 13.2 x 10.1 inches (33.6 cm x 25.7 cm)

This is an authentic, antique map showing the Republic of Mexico, portions of the United States and Indian Territories during the 1830s. The map was published in Atlas Geographe. Astronome. Et Hystorique by Johann Georg Heck out of Paris in 1834.

In this map, Mexico is shown divided into several provinces that include Texas and Upper California. Routes from Natchitoches and Austin to points south are depicted, as well as several trails leading from Jefferson and St. Charles, Missouri to Santa Fe. The 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty line acts as the border between Upper California and the Oregon Territory. Native American districts are also depicted in the northern portion of the map. Within the Great Basin the mythical Lake Teguayo is shown below Lake Timpanagos with several notations including “desert country, inhabited by few” and “country of many free Indian tribes.”

This is overall, an unusual and scarce map showing the Republic of Mexico and continuous parts of the United States during a very interesting time of territorial expansion in North America.

Condition: This map is in A condition with some light foxing and original color. . ...............................................................................................................................450
