Our example was probably from the same piece of jewelry as BM-878 since it has the same hairline edge marks. These light weight staters were issued to compete with the staters of Philip II; a somewhat later issue of similar weight is on a smaller, thicker flan to more closely resemble Philip’s staters. Very rare, apparently the fifth known specimen. When recently cataloged there were seven citations shown, however they were all incorrect because they represented the 9.1 gram issue. This is the very rare 8.5 gram issue that was created to compete with the gold staters of Philip II. Minor imperfections as previously catalogued. Horse standing r., crowned by boy rider. Rx. Dolphin rider l., holding cantharus and trident. Below, waves. Ex NAC 51 (2009), lot 493. Though the types seem serene, Tarentine coinage was frequently struck to finance the city’s never-ending war against the indigenous tribes of the Apulian and Lucanian hinterland. The obverses of the 4th century display riders’ games (in this case, a victorious boy crowns his horse), and the reverses show the mythical founder of the harbor city, Phalanthos, riding a dolphin towards the shore. A high percentage of the relevant coins were overstruck on Corinthian staters, thereby not only obliterating the undertype but also defacing the Tarentine designs. The reverse legend states that Domitian has celebrated Saecular games, and the type probably shows one of the heralds who announced his intention to celebrate them. Rare: not represented in Reka Devnia hoard. The new RIC rates this coin as far commoner than it actually is, probably because its historical reverse type, desired by collectors and readily saleable by dealers, has led to its over-representation in collections and among the illustrated pieces in the sales literature. Darkly toned from being in the earth. The earthen vestiges on the reverse give this coin a very pleasant cameo effect. Despite fairly convincing uneven edge, pitting, and apparent remains of red deposits, this coin is probably a modern cast, since its metal appears to be silver, whereas genuine coins of this issue contained very little silver and look like
bronze coins. Nevertheless the coin probably derives from an authentic original, and is therefore of interest for preserving record of a new, second die showing the engraver’s error IVNONO for IVNONI in the reverse legend. Rx: COS - III Zeus Karios standing front, holding spear and shield, both of which rest on ground; in front of the shield an eagle on a curving pedestal. Unusual image of a local Carian form of Zeus, which appears nowhere else in ancient coinage or ancient art. Very rare: only two specimens known to Metcalf. Our coin shares its obverse die with Metcalf’s specimen 192, but is from a new reverse die. Apparently overstruck on a PAX cistophorus of Augustus, RPC-2203: the AX of PAX and the outline of Pax’s lower body is faintly visible in reverse left field to the right of the C of COS, and above Zeus’ head we can probably make out a leaf and two berries from the wreath encircling the original reverse type. The curious triangular indentation at 5 o’clock on obverse edge may be the lower corner of an IMP VES AVG countermark that had been applied to the cistophorus of Augustus and that was largely filled in when the coin was restruck for Hadrian. Scarce: 16 specimens known to Metcalf. The same reverse type appears on provincial bronze coins of Sardes, sometimes in connection with a legend mentioning KOPAIA which identifies the statue as that of Kore (Metcalf, p. 55). Overstruck on an uncertain undertype. EF. EF.1800 292. HADRIAN; 117-138 AD, Cistophoric tetradrachm, Aezani, 10.17g. Metcalf Type 49, BM-1066 note, bust var. of C-275 (30 Fr.) and RIC-497 (R ). Obv: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P Bust draped and cuirassed with head bare r. Rx: COS - III Zeus, naked to waist, standing l. holding eagle and scepter. Rare type and mint: only 13 specimens in Metcalf, of which three have the bust draped and cuirassed like ours and the rest have either bust draped or head bare only. From the same obverse die as the Vienna specimen, Metcalf pl. 15, 224. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Mark Antony and Octavia, RPC-2201 or 2202: the cista and the coil of a snake below and to the right of it survive in left reverse field. Rare silver drachm of Tranquillina at Caesarea, unknown until 1978 when Sydenham/Malloy-617aa reported two specimens, in Leu 18, 5 May 1977, lot 373 and the Burbules Collection. Recently several dozen further specimens of this rare drachm have appeared on the market, mostly of Year 4 like the two Sydenham/ Malloy pieces, but also several of Year 5. The Year 4 pieces all seem to come from only three obverse dies, one without stephane and with a nest of braids on the neck, and two with stephane and without the nest of braids. The Year 4 reverse dies vary in the abbreviation of the legend, KAIC B N or KAICA B NE, and in the placement of a pellet in the field left of Mt. Argeus on some dies. The three Year 5 drachms come from a fourth obverse die, and from two reverse dies, both with a pellet in upper right rather than upper left field. EF.1200 304. This aureus is not in RIC or BMC and was unpublished until a specimen appeared in Leu 10, 29 May 1974, lot 202. Its date of issue was probably 188 AD, since that was the date of two related types on bronze medallions, one with legend FORTVNAE DVCI C V P P, showing Commodus sacrificing before the standing Fortuna, the other with legend FORTVNAE REDVCI C V P P, showing the emperor sacrificing before the seated Fortuna: see Dressel, Berlin Medallions, pp. 1412. The type of Fortuna Redux seated, sometimes with legend FOR RED, was also used on ordinary bronze coins and denarii of Commodus dated TR P XIII=188. According to Dressel the trip to which these types referred may have been one to Africa that is mentioned by the Historia Augusta, which Commodus planned and collected subsidies for but then never actually undertook. Fortuna Redux, the Fortuna who brings the emperor safely back to Rome, is common on Roman coins, but this is the only appearance of her companion Fortuna Dux, the Fortuna who guides the emperor safely to his destination. EGYPTIAN ALABASTER HAPY CANOPIC JAR, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. This is a wonderful example of an Egyptian canopic jar. Canopic jars contained the internal organs of the embalmed mummy. There were four jars used in this process, this particular one was reserved for the lungs of the deceased. The piece is sculpted out of white banded alabaster and as is typical, the bottom section is turned while the top lidded section is carved. The lid depicts the head of a baboon, the god Hapy. EGYPTIAN A LARGE EGYPTIAN BRONZE AND GILT WOODEN IBIS, Late to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664-30 BC. The piece is depicted seated and realistically modeled. Its body is sculpted in wood with it’s wings tightly folded. The body has a heavy layer of course granular gesso that has a gold leaf applied- most of which is intact and in good shape. The head, legs and tall pieces are cast separately in bronze and attached to the body. On the head the eyes are inlaid white and black glass set into the head. The elongated beak curves downward with the neck curving inward to connect with the body. The legs are solid cast with incised scales and tangs for inset into a base. As with the better and larger examples of ancient Egyptian ibis, the tail feathers also are rendered in a bronze plate with incised feathers. The bronze pieces all have their original archaeological surfaces largely intact. Thus the familiar sequence of green over black over red in the general corrosion sequence of complex to simple corrosion compounds; this pattern is especially visible on the legs. The ibis represents the Egyptian god Thoth. Originally the god of the moon, Thoth came to greater importance later in Egyptian history as the god of wisdom, science, magic and the judgment of the dead. The cult of Thoth gained prominence during the Late Period, when thousands of ibis were mummified at his main temple in Khmun. This present example is a well-known and recognizable type with established parallels in both museum collections and auction records. Provenance: Ex California estate, acquired in the 1960’s. The map was published in Chicago with a copyright year of 1881. It’s not often that one finds a large format, double page map of a Chicago suburb from a late 19th century atlas, especially one of an affluent town such as Lake Forest. The map shows various land plats and their sizes, some with family names, divided among three main wards by Western and Deer Path Avenue. Parks are noted in green and tributary rivers feeding Lake Michigan are shaded. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and train depot is shown running north and south adjacent to Western Avenue. The two parks Academy and University are presently the site of Lake Forest College. Mayflower Park was eventually taken over by residential housing. ROUILLE SECRETAIRR ‘D ETAT AYANT LE DEPARTEMENT DE LA MARINE… 1750… SUR DE NOUVELLE OBSERVATIONS ON A CORRIGEE LES LACS, ET LEURS ENVIORNS 1755, By: Jacques Nicolas Bellin Date: 1755 (dated) Paris Dimensions: 19.5 x 24 inches (49.5 x 61 cm) This is an authentic antique map showing of North America from the eastern seaboard to the Rocky Mountains. The map was originally published by Jacques Nicolas Bellin in 1750 for Charlevoix’s Histoire et description générale de la Nouvelle France. This example came 5 years later with the added title “Sur de Nouvelle Observations on a corrigee les Lacs, et leurs Enviorns,” which notes new observations and corrections on the Great Lakes region. This fantastic large format map is based on Delisle’s map of 1718 with additions from notes compiled by the Jesuit priest, explorer and historian, Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix. Bellin produced a substantial number of important separately issued maps, particularly reflecting continuing discoveries and political events in the Americas. This map extends its coverage further south to include all of Florida and includes fairly accurate delineations plethora of Indian villages, army forts, trading posts, missions, rivers, portages throughout the map. While Jacques Bellin’s maps were regarded as some of the most accurate works of the 18th century, a number of topographical fallacies found their way onto the page in into history. A notable mistake displayed in this map is the massive mountain range that runs the length of present day Michigan. Bellin can also be noted for his insertion of three fictional islands in Lake Superior, including I. Philippeaux, I. Pontchartrain, and I. St. Anne (not shown in this map). Condition: Map is in A condition with original coloring, full margins, a strong impression, and a healthy watermark that can be seen clearly when held to the light. . 2500 452. The partial mapping of New Guinea generates some interest as for decades there was much speculation with regard to whether or not New Guinea and Australia were possibly connected. The first European ship to sail along the Australian coast was the Duyfken captained by Willem Janszoon in 1606. At the time, Janszoon believed he was looking at unexplored reaches of New Guinea. Often times the area between Korea and Japan is referred to as either the East Sea or Sea of Japan. This map places the area in favor of Korea naming it Mer de Coree. A little further east, Vaugondy includes a portion of “Terre de la Compagnie,” which can be found in hundreds of maps as an enormous landmass that in some cases stretches half the distance of the Northern Pacific. This landmass is an erroneous mapping of the Kuril Islands by 17th century Dutch explorers. Look to the northern border of China and you can see the delineation of the Great Wall built over several dynasties to keep the Mongols out of China. Condition: Map is in B condition, printed on thick paper with a light stain in the center and lovely hand coloring. . ............................................................................................. 550 453. EUROPE EASTERN ABBILDUNG DES SCHWEDISCHEN UND BOLLISCHEN FELDLAGER AM WEIXEL, SAN, UND NIGER FLUS DA DIE SCHWEDISCHE NOCH UBRIGE VOLCKER EIN GESCHLOSSEN GEHALTEN WORDEN GESCHETEN IM MARTIO ANNO 1656, By: Matthew Merian Date: 1660 (circa) Frankfurt Dimensions: 10.1 x 13.9 inches (25.7 x 35.3 cm) This is an authentic antique map showing the Swedish invasion of a Polish encampment across the river from the town of Sandomierz. The map was published in Frankfurt by Matthaus Merian as part of Theatrum Europeaum, circa 1660. Matthaus Merian was one of the most talented copper plate engravers of his time. This remarkable work of his depicts one of many battles between the Polish and Swedish in the mid-17th century known as the “Deluge.” During the wars the Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth lost approximately 1/3 of its population as well as its status as a great power. According to Professor Andrzej Rottermund, manager of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, the destruction of Poland in the deluge was more extensive than the destruction of the country in World War II. Condition: Map is in A condition with some tear repairs that are hardly noticeable unless the map is held to a light. . .................................................................................. 550 454. WORLD PLANISHPHERE ELEMENTAIRE ET ILLUSTRE INDIQUANT LA DESCRIPTION GEOGRAPHIQUE DES PARTIES CONNUES DE LA TERRE…, By: Alexandre Vuillemin Date: 1853 (dated) Paris Dimensions: 25.1 x 34.25 inches (63.75 x 87 cm) This is an authentic antique map of the World by Alexandre Vuillemin. This is earlier folding map edition that came out of Paris, dated 1853. This large and striking map of the world is based on the Mercator projection. The map appeared in “Atlas Illustre de Geographie Commerciale et Industrielle,” and is loaded with information, such as international shipping routes of the 1850s and descriptive text on numerous countries regarding their size, population, spoken language(s), resources, and primary exports. Recent discoveries within the Polar Regions are noted with dates and place names. What stands out most about this map is its implementation of 17th century elements such as decorative vignettes within the map and along the lower border. Within the map, illustrations of sailing ship and whaling scenes accent the oceans while scenes depict reindeer sledding and Russians fighting polar bears fill in the uncharted areas of northern Siberia. The lower corners of the map feature illustrations of the various people of the world. Also shown flanking a diagram of the planet are pictorial charts listing the world’s highest mountains and longest rivers. Condition: Map is in A condition with no signs of weakness or separation along the linen folds. Map also displays original outline hand coloring. . .................................. 1350 455. POLAR SEPTENTRIONALIUM TERRARUM DESCRIPTIO PER GERARDUM MERCATOREM CUM PRIVILEGIO, By: Gerard Mercator
Date: 1628 (Published) Amsterdam Dimensions: 14.5 x 15.5 inches (36.8 cm x 39.5 cm)
This is an authentic, antique map of the Northern Pole by Gerard Mercator. The map was published out of Amsterdam in 1628 as part of Atlas sive Cosmographicae. This landmark map was the first separately printed map to focus on the Arctic. The North Pole is depicted according to legend as a massive rock, surrounded by circulating waters, feeding four rivers that separate four large islands. Interestingly, magnetic north is noted with a separate island between Asia and North America, just north of the Strait of Anian. In North America, there is a very early reference to California (California regio, sola fama Hispanis nota), curiously shown north of the El streto de Anian. The map depicts the attempts of Frobisher and Davis to locate the northern passages to Asia. In the North Atlantic, Greenland is given an interesting shape, Iceland closely resembles Ortelius’s depiction, which was derived from indigenous sources, and the mythical island of Frisland is shown with several named towns. This is the second state of the plate with updates in the region north of Russia including undefined coastlines to one of the islands surrounding the pole and Novaya Zemlya. The map is surrounded by a floral design with four roundels in each corner. These contain the title, the Faeroe Isles, the Shetland Isles, and the mythical island of Frisland. Condition: This map is in B condition with a nice impression with attractive color and very wide margins. There are expert repairs to several centerfold separations, one tiny hole at bottom left, a tear adjacent to the centerfold that extends from the bottom of the map to the center, and a number of chips and tears in the blank margins. . ............................. 2500
