Rx: P M TR P XIIII COS III P P Septimius on horse prancing r., holding spear horizontally by waist, with point behind him rather than in front. Rare: only five specimens in Reka Devnia hoard. CoinArchives Pro shows two other specimens with the emperor’s spear pointed backwards, as well as several specimens on which the spear point is unclear. An aureus of the same type with the spear pointed forward: BMC pl. 40.9. Mint State........ 3 5 0 Onyx Cameo CARACALLA CAMEO; ca. 215-217 AD, A portrait cameo of two layers, white on blue-black. The Emperor facing right with heavy brow and creased forehead, the details of his characteristic short beard and curly hair crisply incised. He is laureate and wears a cuirass and paladamentum. L. 20mm One virtually never sees Imperial period cameos unless you view the collection in Florence, Italy. What seems impossible does actually exist in large public collections, no doubt also in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Even though this cameo has a few edge breaks, the portrait of a mature Caracalla is flawless. This is in the Denarius section of the catalog because it is the size and type of an exquisite denarius, though it is a hand-carved cameo of one of the most villainous emperors of Rome. This cameo is a prize for anyone collecting Roman portraits or the coinage of Caracalla. No wear...................................... 21000 JULIA PAULA; Branch Mint, 220 AD, Denarius, 3.34g. Kraay cites two coins from these dies, in Paris and in the H.P. Hall Collection. Our piece, being of excellent quality, and having appeared earlier in NFA V of 1978, might well be the Hall specimen cited by Kraay; to be certain one would have to check Kraay’s plaster cast of the coin in Oxford. Hall’s specimen was apparently no longer in his collection at the time of his death, however, since no such coin was described or illustrated in the Glendining sale of the H.P. Hall collection in 1950. Ex NFA V, 23-4 February 1978, lot 396 Possibly the Hall Collection piece cited by Kraay-277 This massive sestertius of Galba shows a wonderful, expressive portrait. Vitellius, the emperor’s deceased father, seated l., togate, on curule chair on platform, receiving something from or handing something to the first of three togate figures who stand r. on the ground before him; the second togate figure on the ground also raises his r. arm towards the seated censor, though that raised arm is mostly concealed behind the first standing figure; above the heads of the three standing figures, a man seated r. on an invisible platform, probably a scribe writing down the names of those who are approaching the censor. This sestertius of Vitellius commemorating his father’s censorship under Claudius is very rare, apparently coming from only one reverse die. The specimens known to Colin Kraay in his unpublished Oxford dissertation of 1953 were all from the same die pair as ours, and the same is true of all the specimens we have been able to locate in CoinArchives Pro, the Berk photofile centering on auction catalogues of c. 1970-1990, and a large number of collection and auction catalogues in the Berk library. A plaster cast in BM is stated to show the same reverse type coupled with a variant obverse legend, reading GERMANICVS rather than GERMAN (RIC 114); we would expect this variant, if confirmed, to also come from the same reverse die. Similarly a sestertius in Berlin reported to have not CENSOR II but CENSOR III in the reverse legend (RIC 135) must surely just be a tooled CENSOR II from the same reverse die. Vitellius’ father was the most distinguished member of the Senate during Claudius’ reign, having served as consul three times, the last two times with the emperor as his colleague, and then becoming censor with Claudius in 47-48 AD. The title CENSOR II in the sestertius type is odd, perhaps referring to the fact that the censorship of Vitellius’ father was carried out in two consecutive years, for L. Vitellius was certainly censor only once, and correctly has the title CENSOR only on the gold and silver coins struck by his son, not CENSOR II as in the sestertius type. See the discussion of this question by Eckhel, Doctrina VI, pp. 314-5, followed by Mattingly, BMC I, p. ccxxv. Roman portraits of Vitellius perfectly centered like this are quite scarce and desirable. This coin is even more desirable because of its reverse type commemorating Vitellius’ father which was apparently struck from only one reverse die. Wonderful green patina with some earthen toning. Rx: COL AVG - TROAD Hercules “Farnese” standing r., holding r. hand behind back, and leaning with l. arm on club that is covered with lionskin and rests on rock. Volusian appears as Caesar (bare-headed) on only two obverse dies at Alexandria Troas, ours with legend ending VOLVSS (RPC 441 and 443), and RPC 440 and 442 with legend ending VOLVSSI. These two dies are so similar that RPC mistakenly calls them the same die. The letters ELD in Volusian’s legend on these dies have hitherto been read as GLO (Lars Rutten, Forvm Ancient Coins, March 2007) or ELO (RPC), but neither of these readings makes sense, so they had to be dismissed as errors of the engraver. On the basis of our coin C. Clay thinks that the correct reading is ELD, probably standing for Volusian’s name Veldumnianus with omission of the first letter V, if so the only appearance of this name on Volusian’s coinage at Alexandria Troas. Very few provincial mints struck coins for Volusian as Caesar: apart from Alexandria Troas, RPC p. 11 cites only Coela in Thrace (RPC 168-171) and Cadi in Phrygia (RPC-855 and 875). A very rare type, extremely rare from officina Γ=3; MIB lists only two such specimens, from a Stanley Gibbons list and from Berk Collection; absent from the major museum collections. This coin represents the brilliant transition by Justin I to his nephew Justinian I which created strength for the Eastern Christian Roman Empire that was to last nearly a thousand years. This coin has a rather worn obverse, but since the reverse is sharp the issue must have been extremely large because the obverse type is not known showing the portraits of the joint emperors. The two eyes on the portrait of Justinian, one can strangely call unusually sharp. Very few of these coins survive; only two specimens of this officina and less than 50 of all the folles of Antioch. Silenos, the god of the woods, was a wise daemon and far less shameful than Dionysos’ younger companions, hence he is depicted with a himation knotted around the hip. Standing on the left leg, the right one loosely placing forward, the statue has not yet entirely lost the late classical canon, although the stiff upper part of the body reveals the early Hellenistic rhythm. The model of this copy might be from the latest decades of the 4th century BC, the copy dating to the 1st century AD. There is a late Hellenistic variant of the type, known by a statue in the National Museum of Athens (NM 257, cf. M. Bieber, Denkmäler zum Theaterwesen im Altertum (Berlin & Leipzig 1920), p. 98 f.) This over life sized portrait of a soulful and benevolent-looking Antoninus Pius is both a vivid characterization and a brilliant display of flashy sculptural technique. Locks of hair and details of the features are picked out with streaks of shadow created with staccato channels of drill work. The technique is typical of the last quarter of the second century AD. The beard furrowed with drill channels, the pupils of the eyes deeply drilled, and the forehead wrinkles marked with an emphasis. Other than the nose which has been lost to antiquity the piece is in wonderful condition with no fill. This is a remarkable opportunity to own a piece of Roman history. The discus portrays a man sounding his horn in a “watch-hut”, a dog chasing a rabbit, and a robber hanging from the hut with grapes around his neck. This may illustrate one of the biblical parables of the vineyard in Mathew 21:33-43 and the song of the vineyard in Isaiah 5:1-7. There is an appointed watchman for the hut above a vineyard. He sounds his horn to chase a robber away. Maybe a metaphor for Christ notifying his people of the wandering devil. (Adapted from “Light From the Age of Augustine” #51).
