Berk, Ltd. has presented an innovation in antiquities and numismatics for some time now. The system is simple. When you want an antiquity or coin in the sale, just bid the estimated price by phone, fax, web site, email or post. We will send you the antiquity or coin immediately with no buyer’s fees and no waiting for the closing of the sale. Any and all antiquities or coins not sold before the closing date will be sent to the highest bidder after September 18, 2018. All items carry a lifetime guarantee of authenticity. EXAMPLE—You bid estimate on an item valued at $100.00 and if your bid is the 1st to reach us, you will receive the item immediately at $100. If on the other hand, you bid $75.00 on the same item and are still the high bidder at the end of the sale, the item will be mailed to you after the closing. If you are ever in the area, stop in to see us! Of course, it’s best to call first. Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. reserves the right to refuse any bids. 1.

This wonderful coin was one of the two commemorative coins struck for the Panhellenic festival that Antiochus IV created to compete with the festival the Romans were carrying on. The festival lasted about 30 days and had many parades, dinners, and athletic events. This coin depicts a real statue of Apollo that was shown at the games. This coin with head of Apollo on obverse is considerably rarer than its companion piece showing head of Zeus, so may be considered one of the most desirable coins issued by the Seleucid kings. All but one of this issue are of the same grade with the same toning, thus all of these very rare Greek coins must come from a single find before 1980. The scarcer variety of this type, with two of the horses looking back. In his book on the coinage of Lyon, Giard-123 found only a single aureus of Tiberius with this variety (Paris-9, pl. He indeed created an entry for such denarii, his no. 124, but wrote “No specimens found.” However, CoinArchives Pro contains eight further denarii like ours, with two of the horses looking back, suggesting that this variety is really not so rare, and should have been found by Giard and RIC! Rx: PAX - [AV]G Pax standing l. holding branch and transverse scepter. It is chiefly the coins that provide evidence, not accepted by everybody, that Tetricus I made his son joint Augustus for a short time at the end of his reign. Rare antoniniani show jugate busts of Tetricus I and II with the legend IMPP TETRICI PII AVGG; and an antoninianus in Oxford that shares its reverse die with several of these jugate-bust coins shows on the obverse a radiate portrait of Tetricus II alone, with legend IMP C P E TETRICVS C AVG. See C.H.V. Sutherland, An Unpublished Coin. .of Tetricus II, Museum Notes XI, 1964, pp. 151-8, pl. XXIX. Now a few other antoniniani of Tetricus II alone naming him Augustus are reported by RIC-236, 250, 253, and 290-1, but these all appear to be just ancient imitations, not official issues. Our coin may be only the second such coin recorded which is actually official, though its omission of IMP at the beginning of the obverse legend is admittedly odd. COS III Head laureate r. Rx: FORTVNAE - REDVCI S - C Fortuna Redux standing l. holding rudder on globe and branch in r. hand, cornucopia in l. hand. “The branch which Fortuna holds, beside her own rudder and cornucopiae, is either the olivebranch of Pax or the laurel of the home-returning conqueror” (BMC, p. xlv). Our coin is from obverse die 275 in Colin Kraay’s unpublished Oxford dissertation on the bronze coinage of AD 68-81, and a new reverse die, unknown to Kraay. Both dies are unusual for legend arrangement. The obverse die is the only one of several hundred sestetius obverse dies of 71 AD to show a slight break in the legend above head, AV - G. The reverse die shows a new placement of S C, in field and with S to right of rudder. Kraay catalogues 22 reverse dies of this type, 16 with S C in exergue (so on the BM and Paris specimens), and six with S C in field but S always to left not right of rudder. Powerful portrait. Rx: COL FL P - AC DEVLT Venus/Aphrodite washing her hair: she stands l., head r., wringing out her long wet hair with her r. hand, nude except for drapery covering the lower part of her legs, one end of which also hangs from her r. shoulder while she holds the other end in her l. hand; at her feet is a vase with two large handles so that it could easily be lifted and the water within poured over the body. Sculptural parallels to this type are thought to represent Aphrodite emerging from the sea after her birth and wringing the seawater from her hair, but our coin appears to depict a bathing scene. Dragonov knew only one reverse die of this type in the entire coinage of Deultum, used under Gordian III (pp. 124-5). Our coin is from a new, second, reverse die of the type, also used under Gordian III, but coupled with a different obverse die of that emperor, Draganov’s Obv. 109, which was known to him from coins with three other reverse types (p. 75). Our coin also reveals a new, older state of that obverse die, with a large cud in the legend before the emperor’s forehead, a fault which does not appear on any of the coins from this obverse die published by Dragonov. The CA Painter was named by Trendall because he was the leading “Chief” painter in the first stage of Cumaean red-figure vase painting. The CA Painter often painted Oscan warriors who who were the original people of the region of Campania. Our vase renders a scene which was typically represented by the painter. An Oscan warrior stands to the right making an offering at the site of another fallen warrior. Oscan warriors often wear a helmet with a crest and plumes. Here the top of the helmet is missing to antiquity but the cheek piece still is visible on his face. If you look closely at the vase we can see faint shadows wear the rest of the helmet would have been. His tunic drapes lightly against his buttocks which was a characteristic the CA Painter often used. To the left stands a female also making her offering while above a fantastically drawn victory makes hers. The rest of the vase is painted with wave, tongue and foliage patterns. Piece comes with a letter dated 13 April 1965 from Dr. Dietrich von Bothmer, Curator of Roman and Greek antiquities at the Metropolitan Museum. At the time Dr. Bothmer cleaned the piece and described this example of being of great interest. Bequest of N. David Nelson, Washington, D.C., to Private US Collector. Restored from fragments. H. 17 3/4” (45 cm)................... 7500 CAMPANIAN MASSIVE BAIL AMPHORA, ca. 340-330 BC. The obverse of this vase renders a female wearing a peplos (sleeveless tunic) standing within a naiskos (small shrine). She leans on a pedestal with her left arm while the right is held out in front of her and most likely once held a mirror. This detail, originally painted white and applied after the firing, is no longer visible. The reverse of the vase renders two heavily draped youths facing each other. The top and bottom borders are done in a single wave pattern, the sides in long geometric design and the neck of the vase in tongue pattern. There is a 23mm abrasion on the obverse of the vase between the pedestal and the woman’s leg, otherwise this vase with its massive size remarkably has never been broken or restored.
