THE LONG AWAITED..COINS OF THE PTOLEMAIC EMPIRE

List price (2 vols.): $325.00 Special offer to Harlan Berk clients $240 Bronze Vol.: 205 pages, 46 b/w plates Precious Metal Vol.: 625 pages, 76 b/w plates, 5 maps Contact our offices to purchase Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire, Part 1, Volumes 1 and 2 (Precious Metal and Bronze) by Catharine Lorber, is the massive, long-anticipated catalogue of coins struck by the first four Ptolemaic kings. It essentially rewrites the sections on these rulers in J. N. Svoronos’ classic, but now much out of date, Ta Nomismata tou Kratous ton Ptolemaion (1904). The body of coinage catalogued by Svoronos is enlarged by more than 300 further emissions in precious metal and more than 180 emissions in bronze, recorded from subsequent scholarship, from hoards, from commercial sources, and from private collections, and constituting about a third of the total catalogue entries. Lorber’s attributions, dates, and interpretations rest on numismatic research since Svoronos, or on the latest archaeological and hoard information. She also provides extensive historical and numismatic introductions that give the coins deeper context and meaning. The coinage of Ptolemies I through IV is supplemented by a few issues possibly attributable to Cleomenes of Naucratis, the predecessor of Ptolemy I in Egypt, as well as by coinages of Ptolemy Ceraunus, Magas, and Ptolemy of Telmessus, members of the Lagid dynasty ruling their own kingdoms outside of Egypt. About the Author Catharine Lorber holds a BA in Classical Greek from UCLA. She spent nearly 40 years as a cataloguer in commercial numismatics, from the early 1970s until her retirement in 2009. As an independent researcher she specialized in the publication of coin hoards as well as studies pertaining to North Greek, Thessalian, Judaean, Seleucid, and Ptolemaic coinages. Her most important previous contribution was in the Seleucid field, in collaboration with Arthur Houghton: Seleucid Coins: A Comprehensive Catalogue (Part I, 2002; Part II, 2008, with Oliver Hoover as a third coauthor). Her book credits also include Amphipolis: The Civic Coinage in Silver and Gold (1990). Since 2000 Lorber has published more than 40 papers and book chapters treating Ptolemaic coinage or iconography.

Ex SKA Bern 3, 1985, lot 105. A chef-d’oeuvre of the ‘Maestro dalla foglia’, this coin was struck when the Chalcidian cities Katane, Naxos and Leontinoi were holding their ground against the increasing supremacy of Syracuse. (The Leontinians were forced to leave their homes in 422 BC.) Nevertheless, this coin of Katane owes its galloping quadriga obverse type to a Syracusan prototype. The reverse head introduced a new appearance of the god Apollo, thereby anticipating the relevant dies of Euainetos and his school (after 409). This is one of the very beautiful portraits of Apollo issued in this series. Cohen-19 read the obverse legend on the Paris specimen of this coin as IMP X PART, but BMC and RIC pointed out that the correct reading seemed to be IMP XI ART: the engraver left out the P of PART. This error was overlooked when our specimen, from the same obverse die, first appeared in Berk 132, 2003, but it was noticed by the collector who purchased the coin, Philip T. Ashton. Rare and interesting obverse legend error, perhaps only the second specimen recorded. Rx: FETI[A] in exergue, Two draped figures, holding a pig between them with one hand and raising the other hand. An enigmatic coin, see the discussion in RPC. The legend FETIA, a Latin word, refers to the fetial ceremony, at which “a pig was sacrificed to sanctify the oaths taken in a treaty”. Despite the Latin legend, the coin was probably struck in Pontus, perhaps at Amisus; the portrait may show a local king or a Roman imperator. Our coin adds a new clue, the Q or O below the portrait, which was off flan on all of the previously published specimens. Rare, the nine specimens in RPC I “probably all same obv. die”, which our example too seems to share. RPC Supplement I records two additional specimens, the tenth and eleventh in their list. Caligula has evidently undergone damnatio memoriae on our specimen, in that his praenomen C (for Caius), and for good measure the adjoining C of CAESAR too, have been deliberately eradicated after his assassination

in January 41 and the Senate’s subsequent condemnation of his memory. Other bronze coins of Caligula showing the same method of damnatio by eradicating the C for Caius in his name have been collected in an article by Hans Jucker. Damnatio could lead to the withdrawal, remelting, and reminting of a condemned emperor’s coinage with the types of his successor, but on some bronze coins of Caligula his types and portrait were allowed to survive, and just his praenomen was removed to indicate that his memory had been condemned. GREAT BRITAIN, 1742 LUX MEDAL, EF/AU, George II (1727-1760), Martin Folkes (1690-1754), Scholar, Antiquary and Numismatist. Silver medal Bust of Martin Folkes, right, hair short, no drapery/ Sphinx, right, with crescent on its side; behind, the pyramidical tomb of Caius Sestius within the walls of Rome: above, the meridian sun. 25.6g, 36 mm diam. Eimer-572. Medal attributed to Ottone Hamerani. Quite an attractive and fascinating medal. Nicely toned and very scarce This medal was executed at Rome, and, tradition says, by special command of the Pope, unknown to Folkes, whom it was intended to surprise during his visit to that city. Freemasonry was originally named "Lux", and is said to have existed from the creation. The date of this medal, supposing the s to be a blunder for 5, is the year of the world or of Masonry 5742. The Masons considered the creation to have been 4000, or 4004 years anterior to the Christian era: the date of the medal may be therefore 1738 or 1742. Either date is inconsistent with the story, as Folkes' visit to Rome took place in 1733. It is much more probable that the medal was struck at Rome to show the high esteem in which Folkes was held in the city of antiquities, and about the time that he was elected a member of the French Academy. There is in the British Museum an early proof of this medal struck before the legends were added or the type of the reverse finished. STEATITE SCARAB, 2nd Intermediate Period, ca. 1785-1554 BC. A scarab of steatite with simple beetle detailing, reverses to a column of glyphs arranged within a pillar and accompanied by two crocodiles. Although difficult to read, the lower glyphs contain the symbol of the goddess Neith, worshipped at the ancient town of Sais in the Egyptian Delta. Great mother goddess to the ancient Egyptians, Neith was believed to be the mother of Osiris, and as such identified in funerary literature as overseeing the wrappings of the deceased in linen. Also associated with the crocodile god Sobek of the Saiyum Lake region in some mythological contexts, she is also accompanied by two crocodiles, as shown here, referred to in religious texts as the “two crocodile gods.” An important scarab connected to the worship of this ancient goddess and offering magical protection. Meaning “established with, or by means of, God,” and having an amuletic, protective function. This particular example, of mottled black and white diorite, is fashioned only in outline, without any indication of the eye’s details. Even the suspension loop attached to the top of the amulet was left undrilled. While it is possible that this particular example was never finished, even a rudimentary example with vestigial suspension loop, like this one, would have possessed amuletic powers. The back pillar is inscribed (upside-down) with the names of the owner and his mother; the crude hieroglyphs may be read “Irtify, born of Nes-ta-rekhyet.” As an amulet, the baboon would have guaranteed its owner rebirth and renewed life, for the baboon was associated with the newly reborn sun at dawn and was also a symbol of sexual vigor. both plastic sculpting, as well as painted detailing. It is also adorned with grotesque heads on the chest, belt and shoulders. This is a very rare type in Tang terracotta figures. It depicts a seated lion looking slightly to one side, modeled in white pottery with separately sculpted mane and tail details. Significantly, with its larger body, longer legs and face, the lion looks more lion-like than dog like as with later “Foo dogs” which were adopted from India as the lions of the Buddha. While they start out physically lion-like, Chinese lions become very dog-like by the Song Dynasty. It has traces of white, black and reddish pigments. This less common Tang piece is fully intact with a rosewood base. It was purchased in Macau in the early 1970’s. The Sassanian Empire harkened back to the Zoroastrian culture of the Ancient Persian Empire. This anthropomorphic piece has iconic Sassanian wings beginning with the scale pattern and long feathers, and ending in a typically Sassanian curled wing tip. This mythological creature also has an armored human upper body with typically Sassanian curled hair, and heavy bird-like legs ending in large clawed talons. This bronze was likely an applique. It is heavy and fully intact with porous surfaces and traces of a red and black patina. W. 5” H. 4” (12.7 cm x 10 cm)........................................................................2250 510.
