Collection of Stephen H. Corn Stephen Herald Corn (1942 -2018) became a member of the ANS in 2009 and in 2017 joined the Augustus B. Sage Society, when he and his wife, Dr. Andrea Corn, joined members of this group on a 10-day trip to Spain. Stephen Corn attended Vanderbilt University for two years before enlisting in the Navy where he served from 1960-1965 on the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CRA 43) as an electronics technician. After the Navy, he returned to Florida and joined his father at Corn Construction Corporation, becoming one of the youngest general contractors in the state. He later became President and oversaw the construction of thousands of singlefamily homes, apartment buildings, and shopping centers across Broward and Palm Beach counties. He was an active member and served on the board of the Associated Builders and Contractors. Additionally, Stephen served on the Broward Legislative Committee, Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals, and Palm Beach Code Enforcement Board. After Hurricane Andrew, Governor Jeb Bush appointed Stephen to the Florida Building Commission, where he was instrumental in helping to rewrite the Florida Building Code. Stephen was active politically within the State of Florida and served on numerous committees, with a strong a focus on Lauderdale Lakes, where he received numerous city awards for exemplary dedication and commitment. Dr. Andrea Corn, Stephen’s widow, notes that he was a meticulous, thorough, and studious coin collector, with an interest in collecting ancient Greek coins with a focus on Athens, Swedish plate money, and Swiss Shooting Medals. During the latter years of his life coin collecting became a very serious hobby, something that consumed him and became an integral a part of his daily existence. As with all he did, he approached his task with passion and scholarship, becoming more and more knowledgeable throughout the years through reading, studying, and attending conferences. The Corn Collection are lots 1-171 & 200, 234, 236, 239, 266

STEPHEN H. CORN COLLECTION ATTICA, ATHENS, WAPPENMÜNZE; c. 515-510 BC, Drachm, 3.76g. Svoronos-59, Asyut-259. Obv: Four-spoked wheel with lilies on spokes. Rx: Incuse square, divided diagonally into four triangles. Ex Triton XXI, 9-10 January 2018, lot 414. Mint State.......................................................................................................... 5250 ATTICA, ATHENS, WAPPENMÜNZE; c. 545-515 BC, Obol, 0.64g. Svoronos-pl. 1, 60; HGC-1654. Obv: Four-spoked wheel with lilies on spokes. Rx: Quadripartite incuse square. Acquired from Sovereign Rarities Ltd., January 2017. EF................ 2000 Latest So-Called Civic Mint Issue ATTICA, ATHENS; c. 515-510 BC, Tetradrachm, 16.85g. Seltman-328, Asyut-Group III. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: Owl standing r., head front, olive twig with two leaves before, ΑΘΕ in l. field. Seltman’s “Civic Mint” issue, though misnamed by him and dated too late, contained some very interesting coins, including the earliest to bear the famous Athena/owl types at Athens in our opinion. According to Seltman, the tetradrachms of this group were “superior in technique and style” and “the finest medallic coins ever produced in Athens”; Athena’s features and helmet on the obverse were “carefully and effectively treated”, while the owls on the reverse were “of special merit”, “reminiscent of the style of the vase-painters of the period”. This class, in our view, was a trial or experimental group like the earliest Croesus coins. The present coin in particular supports that idea, for its reverse type, struck in extremely high relief, places the olive branch at the lower right of the design rather than the upper left as usual, forcing the ethnic to be placed to the left rather that the right of the owl. This variant type occurs only on this one reverse die, otherwise known only from a coin in Berlin published by Seltman and Svoronos, which was struck from a similar but not the same obverse die. Ex Berk 197, 27 April 2016, lot 88. Ex Heinz Kowalski collection, Brussels, 1970s. The obverse die of this remarkable coin relates very closely to the obverses of the Persian War issues, though they are miserably made because of the massive quantity issued. Therefore, this is the last of the experimental issues. EF.. 49500 Unhelmeted Athena ATTICA, ATHENS; 520-490 BC, Hemidrachm, 2.04g. Asyut-267, Svoronos-pl. 7, 31; HGC-1638. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: Unhelmeted head of Athena Ergane r., wearing taenia and pearl necklace; AΘE upwards behind; two olive leaves before; all within incuse square. Ex Berk 198, 7 July 2016, lot 87. EXTREME RARITY OF CIVIC MINT. This coin is extremely rare with Athena Ergane on the reverse not wearing a helmet and with two olive leaves in the lower right corner, which is typical of the early issues of the Civic Mint. We had an example of this in the Gemini Rockefeller sale which was only VF, but did not have the cheek porosity that this coin has on the obverse. It brought a hammer price of $35,000. Less than ten coins of this rare issue exist. Perfectly centered with some contact marks. An opportunity for collectors: a nearly complete collection of the interesting annual issues of new-style Athenian tetradrachms and drachms, each issue being marked by its own symbol, along with the names or monograms of the responsible authorities. Although the rare earliest and latest issues of the series can only be approximately dated, the assignment of the issues in the remaining great bulk of the coinage to particular years is quite firmly established. The letters on the amphora on the reverse even specify the exact month of the coin’s production within the year indicated by the symbol. Rx: Owl standing r. on amphora, head front; ethnic and magistrates’ names l. and r., winged caduceus in l. field; third magistrate ΦANO/KΛE in r. field, A on amphora, ΣΦ below; all within olive wreath. Acquired from Pars Coins, January 2017. An important addition to the corpus of New Style Athenian tetradrachms, for two reasons. First, Margaret Thompson discovered that this obverse die was used for two different issues, Anchor and Star on the one hand and Winged Caduceus on the other, proving that these two issues probably directly followed one another; but she knew only one worn specimen attesting the use of this obverse die in the Winged Caduceus issue. Our coin may be only the second known to show this die link, and it is in excellent condition. Secondly, our coin confirms the appearance of the third magistrate Phanokles on tetradrachms of this issue; Thompson (p. 150) knew this magistrate only on drachms, being unable to verify two such tetradrachms which had been described without images in earlier literature. This is one of the most famous and desirable coins in the entire Greek series. The head of Athena is utterly breathtaking. This wonderful coin was one of the two commemorative coins struck for the Panhellenic festival that Antiochus IV created to compete with the festival the Romans were carrying on. The festival lasted about 30 days and had many parades, dinners, and athletic events. This coin depicts a real statue of Apollo that was shown at the games. This coin with head of Apollo on obverse is considerably rarer than its companion piece showing head of Zeus, so may be considered one of the most desirable coins issued by the Seleucid kings. He indeed created an entry for such denarii, his no. 124, but wrote “No specimens found.” However, CoinArchives Pro contains eight further denarii like ours, with two of the horses looking back, suggesting that this variety is really not so rare, and should have been found by Giard and RIC! The attribution of this reverse type to Ephesus, suggested by the use on later marked coins of that mint of a simplified version of the same type, AVG within oak wreath but without the shield, is confirmed by the countermark of Vespasian on our new specimen, since the few Flavian denarii known to have been marked with that countermark are all coins of the Ephesus mint. Rx: REX ARMENIIS - DATV - S around, S - C across lower middle field, Antoninus, togate, standing l., holding roll and placing tiara on head of Armenian king, who stands l. before him, raising his r. hand to adjust the tiara. Apparently only the second known specimen of this rare type with S C in the field rather than the exergue; Strack-851 reports only the variant with S C in exergue, and only that variant occurs in Berk photofile and CoinArchives Pro, with the single exception of Savoca 7, 28 February 2016, lot 490, where S - C is placed in the lower field, just above the groundline. Our example is a minor variant of that previously unique coin, with the S - C placed considerably higher in the field. No other source apart from this sestertius type informs us that Pius, sometime between 140 and 144 AD, gave the Armenians a king. According to Strack (p. 66), it is uncertain which Armenian king this was; possibly Aurelius Pacorus, known from the inscription IGR I, 222. This coin is an exceptional example of a very desirable type showing the Armenian king being crowned by Antoninus Pius. gVF................................................................................................................2850 363.
