With NGC tag 3598769-002, removed from capsule, graded “AU*, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 5/5, Fine Style”. SICILY, SYRACUSE BY KIMON; c. 407 BC, Decadrachm, 41.00g. Jongkees-14 (only 4 recorded in 1941). Obv: Charioteer driving fast quadriga l., holding goad in r. hand, reins in l.; above, Nike flying r., crowning charioteer; in exergue panoply of armor consisting of cuirass flanked by greaves, with shield on l. and crested helmet on r.; beneath, AΘΛA. Rx: Head of Arethusa l. wearing hairband, earrings, and pearl necklace; four dolphins around her, ΣΥPΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ above. The decadrachms of Kimon are some of the most sought after of all Greek coins. While this coin is unsigned, only four were recorded by Jongkees in 1941. The head of Arethusa is perfectly centered with all four dolphins around her, representing the island origin of Syracuse before it was moved to the mainland. Flawless centering on obverse as well. Slight porosity. This coin is highly desirable for any collector of Greek coins. This wonderful coin was one of the two commemorative coins struck for the Panhellenic festival that Antiochus IV created to compete with the festival the Romans were carrying on. The festival lasted about 30 days and had many parades, dinners, and athletic events. This coin depicts a real statue of Apollo that was shown at the games. This coin with head of Apollo on obverse is considerably rarer than its companion piece showing head of Zeus, so may be considered one of the most desirable coins issued by the Seleucid kings. All but one of the known specimens are of the same grade with the same toning, suggesting that they all derive from a single find dispersed before 1980. We have offered this coin more than once, but it seems that its importance has not been recognized. We still have great confidence in it. Very rare with portrait left. Of the 47 denarii of Otho in the Reka Devnia hoard, only one had portrait left, and that one had the Securitas reverse type, not Pax like our coin. The Pax type with portrait left is missing from the Paris collection, so Cohen had to cite this variety from the BM specimen, which is from the same obverse die as ours. In his corpus of over one thousand images of Otho denarii in museums, publications, and online, Jyrki Muona found only five coins like ours, making it the second rarest Otho denarius. Rx: MHTPO KAIC B N around, ET Δ in exergue, Mt. Argaeus, pellet in upper l. field. Rare silver drachm of Tranquillina at Caesarea. Sydenham knew no silver coins for her at Caesarea, but Sydenham-Malloy 617aa cites a drachm for her, a bust and legend variant of our coin, from Leu 18, 5 May 1977, lot 373, and the Burbules Collection. Recently several dozen further specimens have appeared on the market, but the fourteen in CoinArchives Pro with the same bust type and coiffure as ours, plus nine other such specimens that we have had in stock, were all struck from the same obverse die as the present coin, confirming the rarity of Tranquillina’s silver at Caesarea. Slight doublestriking on eye of Tranquillina. All three of these specimens are from the same pair of dies, so all of them have the same misspelling MILITAM for MILITVM in the reverse legend, an error that Gautier also noticed on a second similar Alexandrian reverse die that was used for Galerius Caesar, Gautier’s no. 27 and pl. XIV. A rare, interesting, and beautifully preserved coin, that reached a hammer price (without buyer’s fee and postage) of 1900 Swiss francs ($2164) in the Nomos Sale of 2011. Iridescent toning. Though fairly common on denarii, this reverse type is rare on sestertii: only 22 specimens, nine with IMP VIII, nine with IMP VIIII, and four with IMP X, coming from a total of five reverse dies, were included in C. Clay’s unpublished 1972 die study of the early Severan bronze coinage. From the Curtis Clay Collection; ex CNG E329, 25 June 2014, lot 480 (“Fairfield Collection”). On denarii this Libertas type apparently replaced SACERD DEI SOLIS ELAGAB c. February 222 AD (F. Dieulafait, Le trésor d’Eauze, p. 218). A rare type on sestertii; the six specimens represented in C. Clay’s collection of plaster casts of Severan coins all come from just two reverse dies. From the Curtis Clay Collection; purchased from Nilus Coins (Bill Kalmbach), April 2002. Though common on denarii, this type is for an unknown reason rare on bronze coins of Maximinus’second issue, with victory title GERM in obverse legend. Not in the Paris collection by Cohen’s day, nor in the BM by 1962. Only three specimens (Copenhagen, Milan, Peus Sale 284) were known to Alram in his MIR volume of 1989, p. 82. VF.............................................................275 AES RUDE LOTS 371-376 Aes rude: amorphous bronze lumps, so called by Pliny (HN 33.13.43). They are also known as aes infectum or imperfectum ‘unmade or unfinished’. Before denominated round coins were introduced in the early third century, all bronze transactions had to be weighed pendo (weighed out), and not counted, numerare (count, add up, reckon/compute) by dispensatores (dispensers or cashiers), This manner of exchange necessitated the use of a balance and has left a rich legacy to the Latin language, e.g., expensa, inpendia, dependere, stipendia, aerarium, aestimare. Most striking of all, the formula per aes et libram (with bronze and balance), which was used to designate the formal ceremony of mancipatory contracts. All these terms lasted well beyond the introduction of struck coinage and have passed into modern languages. CIRCULAR AES RUDE; Italy, 8th-3rd BC, Haeberlin pl. 2.1. The goddess Aphrodite holding an apple in her left hand, himation fastened at the right shoulder and draped beneath her left breast. The fabric clings to her torso and drapes gracefully behind her. The Judgement of Paris was one of the events that led up to the Trojan War. When Eris, goddess of strife, wasn’t invited to the wedding banquet of Peleus and Thetis, the spiteful goddess tossed a golden apple into the crowd, with the words “to the fairest” written on it. The resulting contest between the three most beautiful goddesses of Olympos- Aphrodite, Hera and Athena- was to be judged by the mortal Trojan, Paris. He chose Aphrodite, swayed by her promise to bestow upon him Helene, the most beautiful woman, for wife. The subsequent abduction of Helen of Sparta and the Greeks’ expedition to retrieve her from Paris in Troy is the mythological basis of the Trojan War. NEAR EASTERN ANCIENT HEBREW GOLD LAMELLA SCROLL PRAYER, Early first millennium, ca. 2nd-6th Centuries. This is a beautiful and very rare example of a lamella or metal scroll, which was carried by the ancient Hebrews and early Christians as a protective amulet. Such diminutive scrolls are usually very fragmentary and overwhelmingly rendered in baser metals like copper or silver. The present example both is fully intact and inscribed on a thick sheet of solid gold weight just sort of one tenth of an once. The writing itself on lamellae is highly abbreviated with stylized symbols derived from Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and sometimes even Greek. While often not translatable, it is thought that the script is symbolic shorthand for larger biblical prayers. Crush marks, but fully intact. Extremely rare in gold. THAI “U-THONG” BRONZE BUDDHA HEAD, ca. 16th Century AD. This is a very rare earlier type of Thai Buddha head, of the so-called U-thong B type, which is an earlier Ayuthia style. The face is serene and pleasing with its original gilt piercing through its earthen and green patina. Thai Buddhist styles begin very dependent on Indian Gupta styles in the north and Khmer (Lopburi) styles in the non-peninsular south when much of central Thailand was a vassal of the Khmer empire. In the 14th century Ayuthia styles begin very Khmer in the “U-thong” sequence with thicker Mon-Khmer facial features, dotted hair instead of snail curls, and lotus bud finials on the ushnisha instead of later flame finial. Later by the 15th to 16th centuries, like this present example, Thai Buddhist sculpture start to show the influence of the uniquely Thai Sukhothai styles. The piece is superbly modeled in Hinoki or cypress wood and has areas of splicing repair which is typical of the period, it also retains traces of its original lacquer coating. The head is carved as an insert which is typical of larger pieces from temples of the Edo Period. A rare example of a larger period Japanese wooden sculptural piece. A beautiful piece. This is rare larger matched pair of the Hindu god Krishna and his consort Radha. The pieces are sculpted in an earlier style from Bengal with delicate engraving. Most available sculpture from Bengal dates from the late 18th to early 20th centuries and has less ornamentation than the present pair. Relative to better known Indian styles from the south, eastern Indian styles generally have less ornamentation and a sleek almost modern appearance. The pieces are cast in a yellowish copper alloy tending to brass (copper and zinc) with the smooth satin finish and softened edges that only comes from years of devotional wear. This is the iconic form of Indian oil lamp, with the voluptuous Hindu goddess Lakshmi holding the teardrop shaped oil basin. Lakshmi is the consort of
Vishnu and the goddess of wealth and prosperity. H. 8 1/2” (21.6 cm).......350 496. JAPANESE LARGE LATE EDO BRONZE CRANE ON TURTLE, Early 19th Century AD. The crane stands on the back of the turtle, each animal with delicately engraved features. In Chinese and Japanese mythology, both animals represent longevity in lifespan and love. Cranes pair for life and were said to live a thousand years and the turtle to live ten thousand years. Thus the combined symbols became popular gifts to new and old couples - newlyweds and grandparents alike. Such pieces came in pairs and held candle basins. Sometimes they flanked family alters. The present example is very large and heavy and dates from the late Edo period. INDIAN WHITE MARBLE SEATED JAIN, Late 19th Century AD. This is a seated Jain Tirthankara rendered in sleek white marble from northeastern India, likely Bengal. Jainism developed about the same time as Buddhism. Like Buddhism it was reaction to the Brahmanic monopoly on Indian spirituality. Neither the Buddha nor the Mahavira, founder of Jainism, belonged to the priestly Brahman caste. Jainism represents a less radical break from the theological tenants of orthodox Hinduism than Buddhism. In addition to renouncing caste, Buddhism renounced the very idea or identity of a soul and rejected the practice of harsh bodily asceticism. Rejecting caste like Buddhism, however, Jainism represented a more radical intensification of traditional Hindu asceticism of the Buddha’s and the Mahavira’s day. This made Jainism less congenial to adherents than either traditional Hinduism or the new Buddhism which spread widely in India and elsewhere. A Jain Tirthankara or conqueror represents more the traditional Hindu yogi or the popular image of the Hindu ascetic. Utterly devoted to the union of the particular soul with the absolute and universal soul, a Tirthankara is a profound renouncer of the needs of the body - food and clothes included, and a harmer of no life whatsoever. Very good overall condition. 14 1/2” W. 11 1/4” (36.8 cm x 28.6 cm)............................................................................2200 498. JAPANESE MEIJI BRONZE STUDY OF A LOTUS POD, ca. 1900 AD. This is a superb example of highly realistic Japanese bronze studio casting from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The piece is a study of a lotus seed pod. The lotus pod forms the base of Buddhist sculptural figures and the lotus seed sprouting from the muddy pond was famously evoked by the Buddha as the metaphor of enlightenment in an ignorant unenlightened world. The piece is signed. L. 3 3/4” H. 2 1/2” (9.5 cm x 6.4 cm)...............450 AMERICAN 499. AMERICAN TEXAS REVOLUTION POWDER HORN, Early 19th Century.
