Missing from the following important collections: Grose Weber Jameson Boston Hunt Ward (Metropolitan Museum) Traité (Paris) Hunterian Gulbenkian On command by King Minos of Crete, the labyrinth, a complex maze, was created and designed by the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus. In the center of the labyrinth resided the Minotaur, which had a man’s body but the head of a bull. To keep the Minotaur fed, Minos ordered that seven youths and seven maidens be given in tribute every nine years. The Minotaur was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus. When the ancient Greeks entered Cnossus, they found the remains of a more ancient city where the tops of the buildings were gone and pictures of bulls were painted on the walls. They assumed that the buildings of the city without roofs were a maze controlled by a bull-headed man. While this was incorrect, it left us with beautiful coins with labyrinths and on rare issues an image of a bull-headed man. This excessively rare coin is an artist’s image of a round labyrinth that in fact never could have existed. Acquired in London, 1998. The monogram on our coin is interesting because it was not found by Bopearachchi on any other coin of Eucratides, but is quite similar to the monogram on the unique twenty-stater gold medallion of Eucratides in Paris, which according to Bopearachchi is the largest and heaviest surviving ancient coin in any metal. The monogram on the medallion may be described as an H, with a Δ or Λ above the crossbar of the H and with a Y below the crossbar, whose vertical stroke however continues between the two diagonal strokes in the top half of the letter. The monogram on our tetradrachm is the same, except that a small circle replaces the vertical and the leftwards slanting strokes
at the top of the Y. See Bopearachchi p. 202, 25 and pl. 16. This issue is very popular and very well studied, thus it is remarkable to find an unpublished monogram. VF.5000 102. As suggested by Mommsen, the occasion for the restoration of this coin type was probably the decision by the emperors to recall all of the legionary denarii of Mark Antony that were still in circulation and to use the recovered silver to strike a higher number of lighter and less fine current denarii. But since people were used to seeing the occasional legionary denarius of Antony in circulation, Marcus and Verus restored the type, adding their own names and REST to the reverse legend. Extremely rare. The image illustrates a part of the Old Testament story of Nebuchadnezzar and the Three Hebrews. The King commanded the Three Hebrews to worship his image and when they refused
they were thrown into a fiery furnace, Daniel 3:13-18. While we typically see the illustration of the Three Hebrews standing before the King, other episodes of the biblical story were also, less commonly, depicted on lamps and bowls. This particular example reflects Daniel 3:24; Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellers, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. King Nebuchadnezzar witnesses a miracle. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are not killed by the fire. They are joined by an angel, and walk among the flames unburnt. Extremely rare; the first we have handled. Private Collection, Oregon, acquired 1980s. L.5.4” W. 3” D. 1.5” (L. 13.8 cm, W. 8 cm, D. 3.8 cm)........................1250 466. ROMAN NORTH AFRICAN OIL LAMP WITH TREEHOUSE SCENE, ca. 4th-5th Century AD. The discus portrays a man sounding his horn in a “watchhut”, a dog chasing a rabbit, and a robber hanging from the hut with grapes around his neck. This may illustrate one of the biblical parables of the vineyard in Mathew 21:33-43 and the song of the vineyard in Isaiah 5:1-7. There is an appointed watchman for the hut above a vineyard. He sounds his horn to chase a robber away. Maybe a metaphor for Christ notifying his people of the wandering devil. (Adapted from “Light From the Age of Augustine” #51). Filling holes on either side of scene, long channeled nozzle, two incised circles on the underside. Private Collection, Oregon, acquired 1980s. CHINESE STRAW AND AMBER GLAZED TANG CAMEL, ca. 8th Century AD. The two humped Bactrian camel, the ship of the Silk Route, stands foursquare with its head rearing back and a white pack blanket draped around both humps. The piece is realistically modeled with its body glazed in amber with the blanket in straw or white glaze. The Tang rulers originally came from Central Asia and began to intensifying trading on the Silk Route with the Middle East and West in the ancient version at the modern Chinese “Belt and Road Initiative” that linked China to the rest of the world. On this route the camel became the iconic pack animal. It is in excellent condition with some abrasions to the straw glaze. Mounted. Ex collection of Harlan J. Berk. The horse leans its body back hoofing the ground with its head touching its right leg. Like much larger examples it has a hole where real horse hair would have gone for its tail. The piece is realistically modeled with its body glazed in amber and its saddle and blanket glazed in green. The Tang rulers came from Central Asia and were renowned for their stallion type horses, as opposed to the later pony types of the Ming and the Ching dynasties. Good condition with slight degradation and flaking of the glaze. Ex collection of Harlan J. Berk. H. 10 1/2” (26.7 cm)..................3500 476. CHINESE MING-CHING GLAZED GARUDA, ca. 17th-18th Century AD. The Garuda, a birdlike attendant and guardian deity long ago imported from Indian mythology, crouches on a bench with his muscular legs and clawed feet resting on a rockwork base. In both hands he holds a snake upon which he bites down with his beak. The piece is rendered in green, yellow and black glaze and is typical of the more conservative architectural style dating from the Ming dynasty but still reproduced until the late Ching dynasty especially for roofing and architectural elements on temples. Good condition with some restoration to glazing. Ex collection of Harlan J. Berk. H. 14 1/4” (36.2 cm)............................................2500 477. INDIAN BRONZE DURGA SLAYING THE BUFFALO DEMON, ca. 18th–19th Century. This statue represents Indian Goddess Durga, a fierce form of Parvati, appearing here in manifold and fierce form with eight arms each with a weapon. She stands with one foot on a slain buffalo stabbing it with a trident as she pulls the demon Mahishasura from its body. This is a south central Indian or Deccan regional style with an olive patina. H. 5 1/4” (13.3 cm).........................250 478. INDIAN MATCHED PAIR OF BRONZE OF DEEPALAKSHMI, ca. 19th Century AD. Deepalakshmi are tear shaped oil lamps held by the Indian goddess of wealth and consort of Vishnu, Lakshmi. They typically flank an altar or a shrine. TIBETAN MATCHED PAIR COPPER AND BRASS REPOUSSE ALTAR VASES, ca. 19th Century AD. This matched pair of Tibetan alter vases is rendered in both brass and copper repousse. Both pieces are in excellent condition and nice heavier gauge and earlier repousse. H. 10 1/4” (26 cm)......................................550 480. JAPANESE MEIJI BRONZE FIGURAL VESSEL, ca. late 19th Century AD. This is a superb example of the Meiji bronze caster’s craft in a more tradition Japanese style and topic. Here an expressive attendant figure holds a massive conical vessel, likely for incense sticks. He sits on an ornate four legged bench. Excellent condition with an honest time earned black and brownish patina. H. 14 1/4” (36.2 cm)......................................................................................................800 481. JAPANESE TAISHO WOODEN STREET SWEEPER, SIGNED BY T. MORI, Early 20th Century. This is a nice example of early 20th century realistic Japanese studio art from the Taisho period. It realistically depicts a street sweeper with a bamboo handled broom in camphor wood. The piece is typical of studio work of the early 20th century as Japanese artists begin to mix Eastern and Western styles and subject matters in an example of the great hybridization of global cultures that continues to this day. Excellent condition, signed in Japanese and English - T. Mori. H. 14” (35.6 cm).....................................................................450 482. THAI LARGE GILT LACQUERED BRONZE RATTANAKOSIN SEATED MONK, ca. early 20th Century AD. The Buddhist monk sits kneeling with his hands in the anjali mudra or gesture of adoration or greeting typical of Hindu and Buddhist attendant figures and incorporated into Hindu or Buddhist greetings in India and Southeast Asia. The piece is classic Ratttanakosin style (1782 to 1932) with the combination of late Ayuthia body types with heavily adorned surfaces in stars and floral patterns in the robes. This style becomes typical of the Bangkok National style. Typically this figure along with another would have flanked a larger Buddha image. It is in excellent condition with nearly all of its original gilt lacquer. Ex collection of Harlan J. Berk. H. 20” (50.8 cm), 24” (61 cm) with base.............................................................................................................2500
