(Total: 6 pieces) $250 18th Century Tradesmen’s or “Conder” Tokens Britain of the 1790’s was a rapidly industrializing society, whose traditional rural base was fast disappearing. Factories, mills and mines were transforming the land and called for vastly increased stocks of low denomination coins to expedite daily commerce and new industries. The Royal Mint could not provide the needed copper coinage or even adequate silver coins for trade during the stressful years of the Napoleonic Wars. As a result, by 1791 nearly all copper coins found in daily use were products of private coiners: tradesmen’s tokens, county or city issues, private citizens’ tokens and social-political,
satirical and controversial issues which memorialize the violent political upheavals of the day. Many collectors know these as “Conder” tokens, named for a noted English dealer who created an early catalogue and offered tokens for sale to the large body of enthusiastic contemporary token collectors. Unlike the small and generally crude 17th century issues, the 18th century pieces were generally satisfyingly heavy, boldly designed and struck with precision on steam-powered presses. The work of collectors at the time assured survival of many high grade examples for today’s enthusiastic numismatists. The 18th century tokens offered here are arranged by R. Dalton and S.H. Hamer, (D&H), The Provincial Token-Coinage of the 18th Century. (Reprint 1990, 1996 by Alan Davisson). Order of presentation: County, city, issuer, brief description and record of edge inscription.

Exceptional Offering of German Porcelain Notgeld Porcelain Medals and Metallic Notgeld World War I saw an explosion of emergency coinages in a variety of materials across Europe as contending nations used their existing coinages in silver, gold, copper and nickel alloys for the ever-growing costs of war: purchase of armaments, outfitting of fleets and armies, maintenance of occupied areas and influencing of neutrals. Gold and silver coins vanished from circulation in imperial Germany in 1914-1915; by 1917 iron, zinc and aluminum were replacing copper-nickel and bronze. To relieve coin shortages, hundreds of German cities and towns, districts and federal states were issuing what became a flood of Notgeld, Necessity Money at first printed on paper or even cloth. Paper coin substitutes appeared as early as August 1914 and paper proved an unsatisfactory material, becoming filthy, dog-eared and torn after even brief circulation. During 1917, metal coins inscribed Kriegsgeld, Kriegsnotgeld, Kleingeldersatzmarke began to appear all over Germany. Most were struck in iron, prone to rust; or zinc, prone to powdery corrosion after passing from hand to hand. American collectors generally refer to all of these issues simply as Notgeld. Probably the most distinctive substitute coinage material was porcelain, a medium first perfected by Johann Friedrich Böttger for the Duke Elector of Saxony in the first decade of the 1700’s. Harlan J. Berk Ltd. is proud to offer an unusually complete selection of the porcelain emergency coins made by the Staatliche Porzellan Manufaktur zu Meissen, the State Porcelain Factory at Meissen, Saxony, and a selection of coins and medals made by other German ceramic factories. Meissen issues bear the Crossed Swords or Kurschwertern mintmark. Most are made of red-brown Böttger porcelain known in German as Steinzeug or white Biskuit porcelain unless noted. The scarce issues from other makers show a variety of other colors. Porcelain medals continued to be made far beyond the wartime emergency and great inflation years. The Weimar Republic and Nazi era saw many important porcelain designs. The Soviet Red Army washed across eastern Germany in 1945 and after initial looting, reactivated the Meissen factory as an asset of their Eastern Zone, later called the German Democratic Republic. The medal listing follows the porcelain coins. Porcelain coins and medals are catalogued by Adelbert van Roosbroeck’s Die Münzen aus der Staatlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur zu Meissen und aus anderen deutschen keramischen Fabriken, which was based largely on Otto Horn’s definitive 1922 reference with virtually identical title. Medals are listed according to Karl Scheuch’s 1966 listing, now out of print.

GERMAN METALLIC NOTGELD German metal Notgeld proliferated in 1917-22, when Iron, Zinc, and occasionally Brass and Aluminum were into service during the war years, downfall of the monarchy and the beginning of the terrible inflation that effectively destroyed the German economy by November 1923. After years of being ignored by American collectors, interest in metal Notgeld began to build in the 1970’s, thanks in part to the pioneer writing of Courtney L. Coffing in the then-flourishing World Coins magazine. Among the rich variety of Notgeld offered below are many pieces in superior condition, making the overall quality of the offering exceptional. All will repay careful study, whether the coins are city and district issues or pieces of industries and merchants. Metallic Notgeld is catalogued by LAMB, Robert A. German Emergency Money, L.--.
