In 336 BC the Amphictions (“the dwellers round about”) decided to mint a special coinage. Earlier in 373 BC the sacred temple containing the famous oracle of Apollo at Delphi had been destroyed either by fire or earthquake; a Phocian occupation had taken place and the sacred treasury was dispersed as payment for mercenaries. From 346 to 336 the treasure was restored by annual payments of the Phocian indemnity. In 336 the Amphictions decided to melt down all of the miscellaneous and obsolete coinage that had been donated over the ten preceding years. Before melting, the coins were divided into groups according to their fineness, as fragmentary surviving records in stone still attest. A new coinage was minted in the name of the Amphictionic Council. These coins rarely show any wear, meaning they were special and ceremonial. They were a singular one-time issue.Magnificent strike. Rx: Zeus seated l. holding eagle and scepter; magistrate ΛA. These very interesting Alexander types show Herakles transformed from the Alexander type to that of Mithradates VI of Pontus. Price notes in his extensive Alexander study that Odessus “made no secret of where her loyalties lay. The coinage thus provides an interesting parallel to the appearance of Mithradates’ name on the New Style Coinage of Athens. Tomi, Callatis, Tyra, and Istrus struck gold staters in the name of Lysimachus at this period, and Mesembria and Odessus tetradrachms in the name of Alexander. Their circulation was apparently local, and their striking was presumably a result of the first expedition of Mithradates rather than having been created in preparations to finance it. By 70 BC all issues at Odessus must have ceased” (p. 192). Attractive piece with slight wear on nose of Mithradates. Reverse is nicely struck. These coins were minted by Mithradates in Odessa bearing his portrait as one of Alexander. They were created for the second Mithradatic war against Rome which ended before this issue could circulate. Rare silver drachm of Tranquillina at Caesarea, unknown until 1978 when Sydenham/Malloy-617aa reported two specimens, in Leu 18, 5 May 1977, lot 373 and the Burbules Collection. Recently several dozen further specimens of this rare drachm have appeared on the market, mostly of Year 4 like the two Sydenham/Malloy pieces, but also several of Year 5. The Year 4 pieces all seem to come from only three obverse dies, one without stephane and with a nest of braids on the neck, and two with stephane and without the nest of braids. The Year 4 reverse dies vary in the abbreviation of the legend, KAIC B N or KAICA B NE, and in the placement of a pellet in the field left of Mt. Argeus on some dies. The three Year 5 drachms come from a fourth obverse die, and from two reverse dies, both with a pellet in upper right rather than upper left field. aEF........................................................ 900 298. H. 7 1/8”............................... 800 482. SOUTH INDIAN VIJAYANAGAR BRONZE ARJUNA, Late Vijayanagar Period, ca. 15th Century AD. This is a nice example of a larger and earlier South Indian Bronze. The figure is Arjuna, the hero of the Bhagavad Gita, famous for his self-doubts before a great war. Then Krishna, an incarnation of the great Hindu god Vishnu, appeared before Arjuna in his manifold form, calling upon the prince to do his duty and leave greater concerns only to god. It was in this famous incidence that Vishnu uttered the now famous words to Arjuna, “I am Death, the destroyer of Worlds,” which was later quoted by Oppenheimer after witnessing the testing of the Atomic bomb. This present example illustrates all the coveted earlier traits of classical Indian bronze work. Adorned in prince’s garb, Arjuna stands with long willowy frame, holding a shield. The piece is missing one arm that would have held a sword. Interestingly the piece has a casting flaw on the back and evidence that the surface was being prepared for later cast on repairs to the missing arm and back. MEDITERRANEAN JOHNSON’S ROMAN EMPIRE, IMPERIUM, ROMANORUM LATISSIME PATENS, .........Title: Johnson’s Roman Empire, Imperium, Romanorum Latissime Patens
By: Alvin Jewett Johnson and Ward
Date: 1865 (undated)
Dimensions: 13 x 20.25 inches (33 cm x 51 cm)
Description: This authentic antique map is a lovely example of Johnson and Ward’s publication of the Roman Empire as it was in its heyday, showing the width and breadth to which it had extended its reach. We see that it covered most of Europe, the Middle East and portions of North Africa. Roman cities flourished throughout the Empire, the remains of which are famous tourist destinations today. The arts flourished and some of the world’s most beautiful mosaics were created when the Empire was at its zenith and are to be seen in far flung reaches of its former territories.
Though the Western Empire fell to Germanic invaders in the fifth century, it is often forgotten that the Eastern Empire, Byzantium, survived till 1453 when its last bastion, Constantinople and a bit of territory in its vicinity were overrun by Fatih Mehmet (Conqueror Mehmet), who had been obsessed with seizing it since a child. Ironically, he accomplished this feat by employing the services of a specialist whom the Byzantines had rejected, who supervised the manufacture of the very cannons which allowed the Turks to blast holes in and breach the Great Walls of Constantinople.
Condition: This map is in A condition with even light toning. Printed on good, heavy
paper with original wide borders, a minor centerfold separation has been repaired with archival material on the verso. . ............................................................................. 350 488. Date: 1680 (Published) Amsterdam.
Dimensions: 23 x 19.5 inches (58.42 x 49.53 cm).
This is an authentic, antique map of Brazil which was published by Johannes Blaeu in 1662. It first appeared in later editions of Bleau’s Atlas Maior, and was reissued by Peter Schenk, who acquired many of Blaeu’s plates.
statue of Constantine the Great is featured, as is Hagia Sophia along with many of the churches extant at that time. The famed chains used to control travel and to extort payment for use of the waterway are clearly illustrated, and sections of these very chains may be seen today in the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul. The events of the siege undertaken by Fatih Mehmet, and the subsequent capture of the city are described in Latin in the text on both the lower portion of the recto and the entire side of the verso. Condition: This print is in B+ condition. It is evenly toned and foxed. . .............. 400 492. AFRICA NORTHERN APHRICAE I., By: Sebastian Münster

This rare map divides Brazil into Captaincies, which were the administrative regions created by the Portuguese government. These lands were originally granted to noblemen by the Portuguese Crown, and passed from father to son until the Portuguese government abolished the heritability of Captaincies in the 18th century. Here, each Captaincy is richly described, and major cities, rivers, ports, and nearby islands are all noted.
Dimensions: 10.75 x 13 inches (bottom) (27 cm x 33.02 cm)
Description: This bold Ptolemaic map by Munster covers Maruitania, or present day Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, an area which constituted a large portion of the ancient Carthaginian Empire. The mountains depicted in this map (even if slightly misplaced) are likely representative of the Atlases and their myriad ranges in northern Africa.
The map is also nicely decorated with original coloring. The title cartouche is surrounded by cherubs and a river god, while sailing ships adorn the coast.
The coastlines of northern and western Africa are detailed, showing ports, cities, rivers and fortifications. The Straits of Gibraltar are labeled Columna Herculis in reference to the Pillars of Hercules from Homer’s legend, the two pillars on which Heracles stood to separate Europe from Africa. They are accepted today as two mountains at the entrance to the Mediterranean, one on either side of the Straits of Gibraltar. A lovely sixteenth-century sailing ship graces the Mediterranean just to the east of the straits. The border shows longitude and latitude coordinates. Latin text on the verso describes certain details of the maps.
Condition: This map is in A condition, with original coloring, a vertical centerfold, and some discoloration on the margins. . ..................................................................... 650 489. EUROPE WESTERN OCCIDENTALIOR TRACTUS MARIS MEDITERRANEI / WESTER GEDEELTE VAN DE MIDDELANDSE ZEE, By: Frederick De Wit
Date: 1675 (published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 18.5 x 22.25 inches (47 x 57.2 cm)
This is an elegant sea chart of the western Mediterranean extending from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Adriatic Sea. The map was published out of Amsterdam in 1675 by Fredrick de Wit as part of Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas.
Condition: This map is in B condition. The woodcut impression is crisp, there is water staining at some edges, and minor toning of the centerfold. . ............................... 350 493. AFRICA NORTHERN APHRICAE TABULA II., By: Sebastian Münster
Date: 1550 (circa) Basel
Dimensions: 11 x 13.25 inches (27 cm x 33.02 cm)
Description: This bold Ptolemaic map by Munster starts approximately where Tabula I of northern Africa stops, and covers Tunisia, and the site of the Phoenician’s ancient metropolis, Carthage, so thoroughly sacked by the Romans. The coastline is remarkably accurately depicted, and show ports, cities and rivers which flow to the Mediterranean. The islands of Sicily and Malta are depicted near the toe of Italy, and the Adriatic Sea is labeled. Next to it we see a portion of what is probably modern day Croatia.
Inland we see topographical features including mountains, rivers and lakes. Major cities are named, as are various kingdoms of the day. A violent storm on the Mediterranean is depicted with a large ship going down and sailors scrambling to save themselves. The border shows longitude and latitude coordinates. Latin text on the verso describes certain details of the maps. Latin text on the recto and verso describe the map. The border shows longitude and latitude coordinates.
As with most sea charts, numerous capes, coastal cities, ports, islands and navigational hazards are listed while the interior of both Europe and Africa are completely void of cartographic detail. Rhumb lines radiate from several compass roses throughout the map, providing a directional reference to ships at sea. Two ornate title cartouches adorn the interiors of Barbaria and Western Europe.
Condition: Map is in A condition with original color, some light foxing and full margins on all sides. Minor centerfold separations that are confined to the margins have been repaired on the verso. Some other minor edge splits are apparent. . .. 1450 490. ASIA EASTERN JAPANESE WOODBLOCK MAP OF TOKYO WITH AN INSERT OF YOKOHAMA, By: Anonymous
Date: 1888 (Meiji 21) Tokyo
Dimensions: 19.25 x 27.5 inches (49 x 70 cm)
This is striking and elaborate map of the city of Tokyo with an insert of the port of Yokohama. The map was made from a woodblock engraving in the late 19th century. As was the style of many Japanese city maps, the text radiates from the center of the map, which in this case is the Imperial Palace of Tokyo. Surrounding the map are 20 engraved views of various places around the city.
Date: 1862 (Published) New York
Dimensions: 17 x 24 inches (43.18 x 61 cm)
This lovely chart of the mountains and rivers of the world is both highly informative and pleasing to the eye. The top half displays over 40 rivers and continuous waterways by length if they were to be straightened out. The lower half of the chart features 88 mountains and hills assorted by height from Mount Everest to Bunker Hill. Volcanoes are distinguished by a plume of smoke rising from the summit. Throughout both charts, numerous towns, lakes, cities, monuments, and altitudes are noted.
Condition: This map is in A condition with some light foxing throughout. . 350

Dimensions: 9 x 14 inches (22.9 cm x 35.6 cm)
Description: This hand colored woodcut is from Schedel’s famous Nuremberg Chronicle, and is a smaller version of his large view of Constantinople. The great walls of the city appear intact as the view is from the south, thus not revealing the damage inflicted by the canons used by Mehmet the Conqueror when he finally seized what was often called the ‘Golden Apple’ in 1453. The pillar on which stood the famed
