This coin was issued to celebrate Caesar’s fifth consulship on January 1, 44 BC, an event which occasioned a special issue of gold aurei presumably intended for distribution to notables at the time of the consular ceremonies. This aureus is much scarcer than the A. Hirtius issue that normally appears. Fully struck on a broad flan, possibly with worn dies. aEF... ................................................................................................................................. 11500 AUGUSTUS; 27 BC-14 AD, Lugdunum, 8 BC, Aureus, 7.90g. These Siculo-Punic issues reflect some of the greatest art of the Greek series, including portraits of Alexander. Some issues were done by Punic artists, while others like this coin by Greek artists. Lysimachus in the battle of Corupedium in 281 BC. The present coin in the name of Philetaerus, bearing a splendid posthumous portrait of Seleucus, was perhaps struck from the 9000 talents in the Pergamene treasury. This is a highly desirable, rather scarce issue, struck by Philetaerus but showing a posthumous portrait of Seleucus I whose treasurer Philetaerus had been. The identity of the child-king depicted here (certainly not the earlier Antiochus IV Epiphanes) is uncertain. Houghton and Le Rider in 1988 concluded the portrait was of a very young Antiochus VIII, an ephemeral initial coinage of that king, years before his co-regency with his mother Cleopatra Thea, which began in 125. The authors of Seleucid Coins suggest instead another Antiochus, a son of Cleopatra with Antiochus VII rather than Demetrius II. Cathy Lorber in private correspondence has expressed renewed reservations however, so the matter remains in doubt. This is the first appearance of the standing Tyche type on the coinage of Antioch. Extremely rare; only the 4th recorded. Regardless of which Antiochus Epiphanes this is, he is the rarest king in the entire Seleucid series with only four recorded of the drachm and very few tetradrachms, of which this is the finest drachm.. The seated emperor in the stern of the galley is an interesting addition on some specimens of this restored type, which was not present on the original denarii struck by Mark Antony. Because of lack of space the G of LEG in reverse legend had to be engraved overlapping the shaft of the legionary eagle. As suggested by Mommsen, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus probably restored Mark Antony’s legionary denarius because the silver content of their own denarii had now fallen to the point where it was profitable to recall and melt down Antony’s denarii and to reissue them as a greater number of their own. That point had not been reached under Trajan; therefore Trajan did not restore Antony’s legionary denarius and, we may presume, did not recall and reissue them. The title “Preserver of the Emperor”, which also accompanies the type Stone of Emesa in Quadriga on an aureus, shows that the Greco-Roman sun god not only on this denarius, but also on the common similar denarii of Elagabalus with dated reverse legends of 219-221 AD, must represent the emperor’s Syrian god Elagabalus. Rx: S - ANCT DEO SOLI around, ELAGABAL in exergue (“To Elagabalus, the holy Sun God”), Stone of Emesa, decorated with eagle and shaded by four parasols, in wagon drawn right by four horses. A rare type commemorating the holy stone which was the cult image of Emesa’s sun god, and which the emperor brought with him from Syria to Rome. The Reka Devnia hoard probably contained five specimens of our coin, four now in Sofia that are misreported as C-267 and one now in Varna misreported as C-266. This rare coin shows a chariot bearing the Stone of Emesa, which most likely was a meteorite. aEF. ............................................................................................................................. 2750 JULIA PAULA; Rome, 220 AD, Denarius, 2.49g. The unusual combination of Spes reverse type with Indulgentia legend highlights Elagabalus’ indulgence in raising his cousin to the Caesarship and the prospect of becoming emperor, a favor that he almost immediately regretted. This is a rather rare coin of Severus Alexander when for a brief time he was Caesar, thus heir apparent. gVF / VG................................................................................................................. 385 MAXIMINUS I THRAX; 235-238 AD, Rome, 235-6 AD, Denarius, 2.49g. Kraay cites two coins from these dies, in Paris and in the H.P. Hall Collection. Our piece, being of excellent quality, and having appeared earlier in NFA V of 1978, might well be the Hall specimen cited by Kraay; to be certain one would have to check Kraay’s plaster cast of the coin in Oxford. Hall’s specimen was apparently no longer in his collection at the time of his death, however, since no such coin was described or illustrated in the Glendining sale of the H.P. Hall collection in 1950. Ex NFA V, 23-4 February 1978, lot 396 Possibly the Hall Collection piece cited by Kraay-277 This massive sestertius of Galba shows a wonderful, expressive portrait. The goddess Aphrodite holding an apple in her left hand, himation fastened at the right shoulder and draped beneath her left breast. The fabric clings to her torso and drapes gracefully behind her. The Judgement of Paris was one of the events that led up to the Trojan War. When Eris, goddess of strife, wasn’t invited to the wedding banquet of Peleus and Thetis, the spiteful goddess tossed a golden apple into the crowd, with the words “to the fairest” written on it. The resulting contest between the three most beautiful goddesses of Olympos- Aphrodite, Hera and Athena- was to be judged by the mortal Trojan, Paris. He chose Aphrodite, swayed by her promise to bestow upon him Helene, the most beautiful woman, for wife. The subsequent abduction of Helen of Sparta and the Greeks’ expedition to retrieve her from Paris in Troy is the mythological basis of the Trojan War. H. 10 3/4” (27.3 cm). 8500 ROMAN MARBLE TORSO OF SILENOS, ca. 1st Century AD. Silenos, the god of the woods, was a wise daemon and far less shameful than Dionysos’ younger companions, hence he is depicted with a himation knotted around the hip. Standing on the left leg, the right one loosely placing forward, the statue has not yet entirely lost the late classical canon, although the stiff upper part of the body reveals the early Hellenistic rhythm. The model of this copy might be from the latest decades of the 4th century BC, the copy dating to the 1st century AD. There is a late Hellenistic variant of the type, known by a statue in the National Museum of Athens (NM 257, cf. M. Bieber, Denkmäler zum Theaterwesen im Altertum (Berlin & Leipzig 1920), p. 98 f.)
