Any and all antiquities or coins not sold before the closing date will be sent to the highest bidder after August 4, 2022. All items carry a lifetime guarantee of authenticity. EXAMPLE—You bid estimate on an item valued at $100.00 and if your bid is the 1st to reach us, you will receive the item immediately at $100. Ex HJB, 135th Buy or Bid Sale, 10 December 2003, lot 9. Ex HJB, 113th Buy or Bid Sale, 14 March 2000, lot 14. This coin published in The 100 Greatest Ancient Coins, Volume I, page 14, and Volume II, page 22. Exquisite little sphinx stands on a tunny with one forepaw raised. The details of this coin are beautifully sculpted and the sphinx has a beautiful archaic face with long braided hair. Almost imperceptible hairlines exist in front of the sphinx. Less than ten recorded. This beautiful little coin is a real treasure. EF. (Cover Coin)..................................32500 LYDIA, SARDES; Achaemenid, Darius I-Xerxes II, c. 485-420 BC, Daric, 8.33g. Sunrise-24, Carradice-Type IIIb. Mint State...........................................................................................................3500 BRUTUS, CIVIL WARS, KOΣΩN; c. 50-40 BC, Stater, 8.33g. RPC-1701. Obv: Consul stepping l. preceded and followed by lictors holding fasces, ΚΟΣΩΝ below, monogram in l. field. Rx: Eagle standing l., wings raised, one talon on scepter, holding wreath with other talon. The obverse is inspired by the famous denarius of Brutus. The reverse is seemingly copied from the reverse of a very rare denarius struck by Q. Pomponius Rufus in 73 BC, Cr-398/1. The very distinctive depiction of the eagle on that coin differs from that on the Koson stater only in the position of the eagle’s head. Rx: C.CAES above, AVGVS.F in exergue, Gaius Caesar on horse galloping r., he wears bulla around neck, holds sword and shield, behind him are a legionary eagle and two standards. Ex Berk 98, 7 October 1997, lot 19. In 8 BC Augustus introduced his twelve-year-old grandson and adopted son Gaius Caesar to the Roman army in Gaul. The bulla around Gaius’ neck signifies that he was still a child and had not yet assumed the toga of manhood (J. Pollini, Gaius Caesar on horseback, Mus. Notes 30, 1985). Lustrous. Rx: COS VI in exergue, Roma seated r. on oval shields, l. foot drawn back and set on helmet, r. hand in lap, l. holding transverse spear; before her, Wolf and Twins; eagles flying behind and in front of her. The reverse is copied from the anonymous Republican denarius of c. 115 BC, Crawford 287/1, pl. XL. Hairlines on obverse field. aEF.................. 11000 PERTINAX; 193 AD, Rome, Aureus, 7.22g. Ex Sotheby’s, 23 April 1998, lot 341. Another specimen from the same dies was in Ars Classica XVII, 3 October 1934, Sir Arthur J. Evans et al., lot 879, a coin that was apparently overlooked by Woodward, Coinage of Pertinax, Num. Chron. 1957, since he does not record this combination of his obverse die 3 (pl. This coin depicts a real statue of Apollo that was shown at the games. This coin with head of Apollo on obverse is considerably rarer than its companion piece showing head of Zeus, so may be considered one of the most desirable coins issued by the Seleucid kings. All but one of the known specimens are of the same grade with the same toning, suggesting that they all derive from a single find dispersed before 1980. We have offered this coin more than once, but it seems that its importance has not been recognized. We still have great confidence in it. Obv: TIBE / PIAC (unclear) within wreath. Rx: [HPWΔOY - TETPAPXOY] Reed upright, [L - KΔ] across field. All the coins of Herod Antipas are extremely rare. According Hendin, Herod Antipas is consistently referred to as “Herod” in the Gospels, as on the coins. In Mark 6:22-25 it says, “And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod. .the king said unto the damsel, ask me whatever thou wilt. .And she came in. .and asked saying, I will that thou give me by and by on a charger the head of John the Baptist”. BRUTUS EID MAR DENARIUS IN NECKLACE WITH 12 OTHER COINS; Surely the best known, most iconic Roman coin, renowned even in antiquity and described by the Severan historian Cassius Dio, is the EID MAR denarius struck by Brutus in 42 BC. The obverse features the bare head of Brutus himself, the reverse displays two of the daggers used in the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, the Ides of March, in 44 BC. The daggers displayed differ from each other; it’s been suggested that they are intended as depictions, not of “generic” daggers, but of the actual daggers used by Brutus and his coconspirator Cassius. The full description of this coin is: Denarius, Mint moving with Brutus in Northern Greece, 43-42 BC. Obv: BRVT IMP L PLAET CEST Head of Brutus r. Rx: EID MAR Liberty cap and two daggers Crawford-508/3; Sydenham-1301 (R-9); Sear Imperators-216; Cahn, EIDibus MARtiis, Q. Tic. 18, 1989, 10b and pl. 2, 108 Over the years, HJB has handled more than our share of these famous coins, including one of three known examples in gold. It’s fair to say that none can boast the unusual and dramatic story of the present coin. In the mid-nineteenth century, a vacationing British family found a group of thirteen coins on the beach at Joppa in then-Palestine. Eleven were of Republican/Imperatorial age; the remaining two were Imperial denarii of Domitian and Septimius Severus. Further details of the circumstances of the coins’ finding are not available, but the date range of some 300 years precludes their being part of a single hoard. All the coins exhibit signs of long immersion in salt water, consistent with their reported find spot. The finders proceeded to silver plate and pierce their new treasures and string them into a wearable necklace. Decades passed and the coins remained in the possession of the descendants of the original finders; perhaps occasionally worn or displayed, perhaps languishing half-forgotten in a drawer. Certainly, they weren’t understood to be “special” or valuable, until in 1948, the great-great-granddaughter of the finder was intrigued enough to bring them to the City Museum in Leeds, England for evaluation. The director of the museum, D. E. Owen, in turn consulted a certain Mr. Wade, the lecturer in Romano-British Archaeology at the Leeds University, who finally correctly identified the coins. Wade in fact offered to purchase the Brutus denarius (whether for his own collection or that of the university is unclear), if the owner

was willing to break up the necklace. She declined the offer. Seven years later, in 1955, the coins were again brought to the attention of experts, this time to Michael Grant in Edinburgh, who was the President of London’s Royal Numismatic Society. Grant reiterated that the coins were authentic, dryly adding that “it is extremely unfortunate that the coins have been pierced.” Grant also noticed another scarce and desirable coin on the chain, an Imperatorial denarius of Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio, Crawford 460/4, struck in Utica in 47-46 BC in the course of Caesar’s struggle against the Pompeian remnants in Africa. He referred the owner to E. A. Sydenham’s then newly-published catalogue for details. In 1982, the coins were published in Spink’s Numismatic Circular XC, November 1982, p. 306, in a brief note titled “Roman Coins Found at Joppa,” but not until the present year, 2022, were they first made available for sale.

Recently several dozen further specimens of this rare drachm have appeared on the market, mostly of Year 4 like the two Sydenham/Malloy pieces, but also several of Year 5. The Year 4 pieces all seem to come from only three obverse dies, one without stephane and with a nest of braids on the neck, and two with stephane and without the nest of braids. The Year 4 reverse dies vary in the abbreviation of the legend, KAIC B N or KAICA B NE, and in the placement of a pellet in the field left of Mt. Argeus on some dies. The three Year 5 drachms come from a fourth obverse die, and from two reverse dies, both with a pellet in upper right rather than upper left field. Ex Ars Classica XVII, 3 October 1934, Collections of Sir Arthur J. Evans and Others, lot 1311. This coin illustrated by Hendin. Vitellius, with our middle-bronze type and with his sestertius type of Victory inscribing OB CIV SER onto a shield supported by a palm tree, was apparently the first emperor to issue coins commemorating Roman victory in the Jewish war that broke out late in Nero’s reign; so Hendin, 6th edition, pp. 372-3, following H. St. J. Hart, Journal of Theological Studies, 1952, pp. 172-198 and C.M. Kraay, The aes Coinage of AD 68-81, unpublished D.Phi. thesis, Oxford 1953. This coin is exceptional in many ways. It is the first issue of Judaea Capta and the first one that shows a seated Jewess. The sestertius of Vitellius only shows a victory being inscribed on a palm tree, but no depiction of Judaea. Of this issue, it seems only seven coins are recorded, and this is by far the finest known. It is the plate coin in two of David Hendin’s handbooks, but looks quite different. When David illustrated the coin in the last two editions of his book he had never seen the coin but just worked from a picture sent to him by Bank Leu. When I, Harlan, studied the coin I was bothered by its unusual and rather odd surface, so I sent it to my close friend David Hendin for him to

view. He found and artfully removed a layer of varnish and two layers of paint. This could have been present when Sir Arthur Evans owned the coin since Ars Classia pictures were made from plaster casts. The coin now has a fine original brown surface with only a few miniscule contact marks, and is an incredible prize for anyone collecting this series. (Cover Coin).
