Besides actually keeping the house warm, there are some simple décor and soft furnishing things you can do to give your home that really cosy autumn atmosphere, see page 24. We haven’t done a walk feature this month, but Suzanne’s interviews were with a group of local women who walk regularly in the Pentlands, see the feature on pages 8-9. There’s a lot going on in the villages over the next couple of months, most notably the Pentlands Book Festival, a week of fantastic events see page 36. Don’t forget to send in your events for the What’s On pages if you’re involved in any events locally, or have a charity project that would benefit from local promotion, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Ladies who Lunch
Women who Walk
S
everal years ago, Ratho resident Hilary Phillips was looking for an enjoyable way to get exercise that could fit into her busy schedule. Because she works full-time, it had to be an evening activity. And because she and her husband Mark foster young children, he would not be able to join her.
opportunities to “catch up” with one another, share a problem or discuss an issue. Meeting for coffee or lunch can be great, but often there is not enough time for an in-depth conversation. An hour or so of chit chat can be very unfulfilling. But a two-hour walk means there is plenty of time to discuss and connect. “I find it uplifting,” says Catriona Crawford, a high school music teacher from Juniper Green. “It’s nice to have the opportunity to socialise and exercise at the same time.”
Hilary loves the outdoors and, with the Pentlands on her doorstep, she decided hill walking was the answer. So she asked a few friends at church whether they would be interested, including Wendy White, from Balerno. Wendy was no stranger to hill walking, and she knew a few local routes. A women’s walking group was born.
“With all the hustle-bustle of family life, it’s great to take a break,” says Wendy White. “It can be quite an effort for me to stand up at a party and socialise with people, but it’s very comfortable to converse as you walk along with a friend or two. And of course, there is the freedom to walk in silence sometimes too.”
It’s an informal group. The original members knew each other from St Mungo’s Church, Balerno, and this is still the core, although individuals often invite friends or family. “Currently there are over 20 names on our email list,” says Hilary, “and you never know who is going to show up for a walk. Some come quite regularly; others just occasionally. Normally about six of us meet in the Harlaw Reservoir or Red Moss car park, usually on a Thursday evening, and we walk for two hours.” Besides the obvious benefits of physical exercise and beautiful views, regular walks afford good KONECT BALERNO 8
“The walking women never know what adventure awaits them in the Pentlands”
“We mostly talk about family,” says Hilary. “In the past our children were the main topic of conversation, but as we get older we find we are talking a lot more about our parents. So, for example, there may be conversations about caring for elderly parents from a distance. We talk about health concerns, a good book we’ve read, or share funny stories about getting lost in the dark.”
Hilary Phillips wanted to find an enjoyable way to keep fit that would work with her busy schedule. The women’s walking group was the answer.
Routes to Flotterstone from Balerno: 1) Over the pass. From Harlaw car park: up over the pass between Harbour Hill and Bell’s Hill, down past Glencorse Reservoir to Flotterstone. 2) Through the glen. From Red Moss car park: up to the end of the road, then left past Bavelaw Castle, through Green Cleuch and down past Loganlea Reservoir, then Glencorse Reservoir – a flatter route. 3) Ridge walk. From Red Moss car park: up to the end of the road, turn right, then take path left and up past west side of Hare Hill heading towards West Kip, continue over East Kip, Scald Law, Carnethy and Turnhouse before dropping down to Flotterstone. A more demanding route. Shorter walk: to West Kip only (for the views).
Occasionally men are invited along. This might be for a Saturday walk or a special outing during the Christmas holidays. “When husbands come, people still walk along companionably in twos and threes,” comments Hilary, “but men tend to talk about their kit – having the right equipment for hiking, or about their hobbies. Women talk more about relationships.” The walking women never know what adventure awaits them in the Pentlands. Once they encountered a lamb who was trapped between a wall and a fence that runs along Black Hill. Everyone came to a halt while several worked to free it and return it to its anxious mother. The Midsummer Walk to Flotterstone or Colinton (Dantes) also adds interest to their regular routine.
The group walks in daylight to a restaurant, where they enjoy a meal together. Afterwards, the diehards get out their headtorches and walk back, while others get lifts home. For the past five or six years the women have gone away to the Highlands for a weekend in May, affording them even more time to walk and socialise. Initially half a dozen took part in this annual event, but now it is more like 15 or 20. Increased numbers mean that people can opt to climb a Munro, go on a mostly flat but mediumlength walk, or just do a short stroll. And, of course, the weekend away offers another benefit … good food! Everyone brings a dish, and one member organises a Tesco delivery to their accommodation. “Being part of a walking group is a good way to stay fit,” says Hilary, “and you come home from a walk feeling great. In the summertime you get lovely views of the city, and you feel that you have escaped! In the wintertime you feel that you shouldn’t really be able to go for a walk in the dark – it’s like enjoying a slightly stolen pleasure.”
This feature is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/editor lives in Balerno and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters.

Artis Dental and Implant Studio is a modern dental practice, which has recently opened in Main Street, Balerno. As soon as you walk through the door you cannot miss how beautifully different and welcoming this practice is. Artis provides National Health Service (NHS) and private dental treatment and much more, including services for the disabled and the elderly. Dental implants, cosmetic treatment, facial rejuvenation and aesthetics will be added to the already extensive portfolio following the opening of the new premises in late October.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation E mbarrassment, and the idea that this is just something they have to live with, stops people from seeking help with urinary incontinence.
In many of these cases the muscles of the pelvic floor are weakened. These are the muscles that assist in the control or retention and release of urine.
An estimated three to six million people in the UK suffer from some form of urinary incontinence, with women five times more likely to develop it than men. Over 50 % of women suffer from urinary incontinence at some point in their life, but it’s estimated that only one in five of them seek help.

Men generally develop issues as a result of prostate problems or associated treatment/surgery. Again, they often accept that some level of incontinence is something that they will just have to live with. What is Urinary Incontinence?
Like any other muscle, the pelvic floor can be retrained and strengthened. This requires regular practice of the correct type of pelvic floor contraction. To achieve this it often necessary to seek help from someone trained in the specific techniques needed to help the sufferer re-learn how to contract their pelvic floor muscles. Using a real time ultra sound scanner increases the chances of success. Strength then develops when the pelvic floor is engaged while performing daily exercises.

Cosy autumn home décor
1 D
ress your home for winter with layers of cosiness and a few simple and inexpensive décor ideas.
Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot. Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier – wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair. On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece.

Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets. Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion – it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it. Home-made decorations can be wonderful, and a weekend walk in the Pentlands or any of Edinburgh’s parks collecting natural materials to make autumnal decorations is very satisfying. Wind some ivy around a row of chunky candles; make a wreath; fill hurricane vases with leaves, chestnuts or pine cones and stand a candle on top; fill a wooden bowl filled with clovestudded oranges, or place a string of white fairy lights clustered in a jar or glass vase. Involve the children in making paper chains, bunting or felt cut-outs for that charmingly wonky, homemade look.

Pentlands Book Festival
T
he headlines ran “Christopher Brookmyre wins Bloody Scotland’s 2016 Mcilvanney Prize”. Find out why on November 24th when the man himself, author of “Black Widow”, his award winning novel, speaks in Currie Library, just one of many attractions at the Pentlands Book Festival.
Go to http://www.pentlandsbookfestival.org/ to discover what delights, besides outstanding crime fiction, promise to brighten up life in Colinton, Currie and Juniper Green during late November’s dark days. Any residual gloom will be lifted by free entry to all but one of our events, though you will need a ticket for most of them. Tickets are available from Colinton and Currie Libraries, RBS in Juniper Green and through Eventbrite online. Keep an eye on the PBF website and look out for leaflets and posters so you don’t miss your chance to make an early booking. We kick off in style with Alan Bissett’s ‘Moira Monologues’, his one woman play, at Tanners Pub on Friday 11th November. Other wellknown Scottish writers at this year’s festival are Kathleen Jamie, Margaret Bennett and Catherine Czerkawska, all appearing during Book Week Scotland from 21st to 26th November. We have
KONECT BALERNO 36
events for 3-5 years upwards, embracing teddybears, local authors, walks, talks, research, genealogy, cooking, mathematics, poetry and prose, and a short story competition for young people. If you think literature on its own sounds a bit heavy, we’ve included cross-dressing, pizza and ice cream, wine, music and song to add extra fun to the experience (check out the website). Remember, it’s 95% free of charge, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and grants from the Scottish Book Trust, though we will ask for donations towards the running costs of the 2017 festival. We’re anticipating a big turnout for all our events. Look for detailed information on the website and in your community.

MONEY MATTERS
The Defined Benefit Pension Black Hole
L
ast month we discussed how the transfer values of defined benefit pensions have increased considerably since the reduction in interest rates. The knock on effect of this is that the deficit in many pension schemes has also increased and now many are in danger of failing completely. With pension schemes in the media so much these days, usually with bad news e.g. BHS, it may be useful to cover what happens when a pension scheme fails. On failure, the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) will take over the responsibilities for the scheme although this does not mean that all pensioner’s benefits will be secured. This is how it works: • I f you are already drawing your pension when the scheme fails you are guaranteed 100%.
KONECT BALERNO 38
• I f you are yet to start drawing your pension you will receive 90% of your full entitlement. • T he amount offered is capped. If you are 65, the maximum is £33,678 per year. • A nnual increases are severely restricted. Only pension entitlement accrued after 1997 is index linked, with any earlier pension paid at a flat rate. If you fear for the future of your scheme transferring out is as an option, although it is usually down to personal reasons such as flexibility of when and how you take the pension and the benefit of passing money to your heirs tax free, which are not options in final salary schemes. In all instances, you will require the advice of a suitably qualified adviser who will discuss all the pros and cons of both arrangements so you can make a fully informed decision.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
I
Into Africa!
never thought I would go to Africa, or have the opportunity to see first hand people living determinedly with very little. But I was able to be part of a group who visited Swaziland at the end of September.
We saw and heard a great deal which made us think, cry and see small shoots of hope where well run projects are making a big difference to families, individuals and communities. Many individuals are living on less than $1 a day, many households are headed by children or aging grandmothers because the adults have died with AIDS or are working in the cities. There is a widespread drought so water has to be carried great distances and food is scarce
because the lack of rain means a reduced harvest. As we compared our lives in Edinburgh to the lives we saw in Swaziland, it made us think that we have a lot to be thankful for and that perhaps we should use the season of thanksgiving to focus on what we generally take for granted in our daily lives, for example our health and medical services, food and clean water, education for our children, work, friends, leisure activities and so on. Thanksgiving this year is on 24th November. What could you remember to be thankful for? Thought for the Month is contributed by Pat Banfill, Pastoral Assistant, St Mungo’s Church, Balerno & Livingston. www.stmungos.org

This Christmas Keep Safe at Home *
Thieves know that over Christmas there will be high value presents and maybe more cash in your house than normal. Keep your home secure - lock all windows and doors, don’t leave gifts in view of the windows and keep cash in your home to a minimum.
*
*
If you’re going away for Christmas, keep your home secure. Lock all windows and doors, set your house alarm if you have one, use timers
on lights, cancel any deliveries and ask a neighbour or friend you trust to keep an eye out while you’re away.
If you’re having a house party with lots of guests, it can be all too easy for a thief to slip in unnoticed. Make sure you know everyone who is there. If you’re going to a party, don’t let anyone tailgate you into a house or through a secured communal entry door who may not be a guest.
*
Protect any gifts you’ve bought for your friends and family. Get them to register mobile phones, tablets, laptops and cameras at www. immobilise.com. Don’t give them a good quality bike without giving them a good quality lock, and register bikes at www.BikeRegister.com.

Taking up residence in the former home of Kenneth Grahame, the author of Wind in the Willows, it’s one of the nicest examples of a themed restaurant we’ve seen. ll over Europe people feast at Christmas, but not all celebrate on A December 25th; many eat on the evening of the 24th. This is true for Italy, Poland, Iceland and Spain.
All have special meals and many chose fish as the main dish. Italy even call it the feast of seven fishes and include fried eel as an anti-pasta. Iceland have a dish of fermented skate which is so pungent that many chose to celebrate in a restaurant to avoid their house being taken over by the smell! Austria, Poland and Slovakia all enjoy a roast carp - as we did in Britain in the Middle Ages when fish ponds were an important way of ensuring fresh protein in mid winter. The French include oysters as part of the festivities and the Portuguese make a salt cod dish. In Sweden pickled herring takes pride of place. Nowadays we are blessed with an extensive choice of foods. We don’t have to be limited by what is still alive and in good condition at mid winter. Fish and shell-fish are perfect in December so here are some celebratory fish ideas which you might like to try for a different Christmas meal for your family this year. The last two traditional fishmongers in West Lothian - Oyster Oyster (Linlithgow) and Bathgate Fishmonger - supply delicious fresh, quality seafood.
Oysters Rockefeller 24 oysters opened left in the dished shell and the flesh loose. Fi lli ng
• 200g spinach chopped in fine ribbons • 1 bunch or packet water cress chopped fine • 250g soft butter • Dry fine bread crumbs • 2 tablespoons Pernod or 1 teaspoon ground fennel • Grated parmesan To serve
Tabasco
“This dish was famous in the 1960’s and is worthy of reviving. Then, salmon was the preserve of the rich who knew people who fished. It was sometimes dry, but by wrapping the fish in buttery pastry this is prevented.”
Method
Salmon en croute Serves 6 (For a bigger party use a whole salmon filleted, skinned and sandwiched top to tail). 1 1/2 kilo salmon fillet no skin, no bones, cut into 2 equal halves. Pastry
• 400g plain white flour • 200g butter • A little cold water Fi lli ng
• 200g seedless green grapes, halved • 3 inches root ginger, peeled & finely chopped • Parsley, chervil, dill weed, chives or a mixture chopped fine (about a tablespoon full) Meth od
Combine all the filling ingredients, adding the dried bread crumbs little by little. Do not make it too dry. On a flat tray that will fit the grill pan, crumple lots of cooking foil. This is to support the oysters as they cook. Nestle the shells in the foil, keeping them level. The juices are an important part of the dish. Divide the filling between the shells and scatter some parmesan over them. Have the grill on as hot as you can, and grill for about 5 to 7 minutes, till they are bubbling and the cheese is brown. Serve the tray to table and let the guests chose their shells and add Tabasco. Some bread to go with this is all you need!
• 200g cold butter in small lumps • Salt pepper to taste • 1 egg beaten for the glaze
Either make the pastry in a food processor or by hand and let it rest in the fridge for a couple of hours; or buy the best butter pastry you can. Make the filling by folding all the ingredients gently together and set aside. Roll out the pastry so it is big enough to parcel up the fish. Place one fillet of fish in the middle. Pile up all the filling on the fish and place the second piece on top, and press it down to make it even. Fold the pastry over to cover the fish and make a reasonably tight parcel, sealing the overlaps with water. Line a baking tray with silicon paper and flip the fish parcel into it, making sure the join is underneath. With any extra pastry decorate the top with leaves, fish or what your artistic fancy dictates. This can stay in the fridge for up to one day. Pre heat the oven to 180oC. Brush with egg and cook for 35 to 45 minutes till golden. Serve with a herb sauce or hollandaise sauce and green vegetables.
The monthly Receipe and Food Notes are contributed by Anne Pinkerton. Anne is a local cook who believes that everybody can enjoy seasonal food and can have pleasure preparing meals for their family and friends.

Winter Market Following the success and feedback from last year’s Winter Market, we have decided to host another one! This year we’re making more space to allow you to enjoy your glass of wine/tea/coffee and shortbread/mince pie by setting up some tables on the stage. This will also give more space for shoppers to view all the wonderful crafts for sale. We’re limited to 20 stalls but if last year was anything to go by there will be plenty of gifts to choose from – books, scarves, candles, accessories, wooden gifts, jewellery to name a few! 6.30 – 8.30pm in the Gibson Craig Hall. Tickets will be £5, which includes refreshments and all the profit will be going to charity. Please find more details from the posters being put up, or from Currie Kirk’s website: (http://www.curriekirk.org)
