CHARITY OF THE MONTH
We think of the essentials of life as basic food, clothing, shelter. But beyond mere survival there are intangibles that are absolutely essential for a healthy life – dignity, self-respect, confidence. For local charity Kids Love Clothes, these intangibles are just as important as the “basics” they provide... As the name suggests, Kids Love Clothes provides for children in the Lothians and Edinburgh whose families are struggling to clothe them. “But we do not just shove some second-hand clothes in a bag!” says charity founder Fiona Shapcott. I met Fi along with volunteer Julie Diver at their storage unit in Ratho. As we chat it’s clear that this is absolutely about respecting the people who will be receiving the clothes. Donations of quality second-hand or new clothes are quality-checked, ironed and folded, wrapped in tissue paper and beautifully presented in a Kids Love Clothes bag. Only clothes in excellent condition are passed on. “Over the years, we’ve realised that our service has a much higher impact than just clothing the children,” explains Fi. One story illustrates the point beautifully - the mother who, once she had the Kids Love Clothes outfits, had the confidence to start taking her son to toddler group. She had been too ashamed of not having any clothes for him previously. “So there is a huge value multiplier of the effect – the mother gained some confidence and dignity; the child had the opportunity to socialise...the repercussions are massive.” The bags, so beautifully presented, give dignity and freedom as well as “just” clothes. They are delivered to the recipients’ home, like a lovely gift from friends. The storage unit at Ratho is full of clothes, but they always need more to meet demand. “Look at this gorgeous party dress,” says Julie. “We include party clothes and dress-ups when possible too, clothes that make it possible for kids to socialise without stigma and to be pleased with the way they look.” Referrals are via Social Workers or Health Visitors, and demand has soared in the past year. 882 children were clothed in the Lothians in 2016 – an 88% increase on the 8 | KONECT BALERNO
previous year. Kids Love Clothes is entirely volunteerrun, with volunteers from West Lothian and Edinburgh collecting, sorting, ironing, delivering and creating a great volunteer camaraderie; while I was there for this article the owner of the storage facility turned up with a freshlybaked cake for the volunteers! There is clearly a fantastic atmosphere. “We know we’re making a huge difference to people’s lives. It’s hard work, but there’s a massive need right here in our own local communities.” The Kids Love Clothes ironing ladies of Kirknewton get a special mention for riding to the rescue regularly with big piles of ironing! The stories of the families who receive the clothes are many and varied: victims of domestic violence who have fled with their kids with just the clothes on their backs; loss of job and/ or benefits which throw a family temporarily into hardship; refugees and immigrants. For some situations a large holdall for the clothes is provided too for families who are likely to need to move on from one temporary accommodation to another. A Kids Love Clothes bag contains a wardrobe’s worth of seasonally appropriate clothes. A few toys and books are usually included with each bag. Items that are not quite good enough for the gift bags are passed on to other organisations; nothing is wasted. Clothing for a child in need seems like an obvious service, but there are no other charities doing this. The Edinburgh Clothing Store does great work although it operates more like a food bank rather than the “beautifully packaged gift from friends” model that Kids Love Clothes strives to achieve.
Collection of donations from Potter Around, Kirknewton I had my wee girl in January. At first it was a great experience and I had lots of clothes as gifts from family and friends. As time went on my maternity pay stopped and I was struggling to buy clothes, but I received a lovely bag of clothes from Kids Love Clothes – they were like new, freshly ironed and smelling like they had just come off the line! My wee girl looks like a princess. Parent Donations of clothes are always needed! Kids grow so fast that they often grow out of their clothes before they wear them out! Please wash and save any good condition second hand clothes for ages newborn to 10 years. New clothes are welcome too. There are various drop-off points around the Lothians, please contact us for details.
Gift Bags for Newborn Twins
Organise collections: if you can organise clothing collections at your work, school, fitness classes or social clubs we’d love to hear from you! Volunteers – we need people to join our team for sorting, checking and ironing clothes. Become part of the Kids Love Clothes community! Fundraising – we also need good old-fashioned fundraising to cover our overheads such as the storage facility rent and keeping the van on the road.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
SAY GOODBYE TO WINTER AND HELLO TO SPRING
As well as all the usual spring-cleaning jobs like cleaning your cupboards and changing the bedding – which, let’s face it, should be done on a regular basis anyway - it’s time to get stuck into those jobs that couldn’t be done during the winter. Tackle them now and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the summer knowing that your home will be in tip-top condition. Let’s start with the outside. 1. CLEAR THE WINTER DEBRIS
Clean your extractor hood and replace any charcoal filters
Check your gutters and clean out any dead leaves. This is a job that should also be done after autumn as dead leaves can cause blockages meaning water can get trapped, freeze and crack your pipes. If you spot a cracked pipe or gutter, it’s best to get it replaced now otherwise rainwater running down your walls could lead to corrosion and dampness. Replace any roof tiles while you’re at it. 2. RE-POINTING THE EXTERIOR
Rake the lawn to remove dead growth and winter debris
Re-pointing – that is, filling in the gaps between your stone or brickwork – is a bit like watching paint dry (pardon the pun). It’s not the most exciting of tasks but needs to be done to ensure the fabric of your property stays waterproof yet breathable which allows condensation to escape. It’s best to choose a lime-based mortar for the task. You may need to hire a scaffolding tower from a local DIY company to allow you to safely get to those hard-to-reach places. If you’re not confident in re-pointing yourself, employ a reputable builder to do it for you. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

3. PAINTING YOUR WINDOWS AND PATIO DOORS Spring is the time to throw open your windows to let the fresh air in and give your window a fresh lick of paint. If they need replaced there’s no time like the present. Look for windows with a low U value which means they’re thermally efficient and will keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter. The same applies to patio doors. Spring and summer is the best time to get them replaced and they needn’t be as expensive as you may think. Bi-folding doors have become popular in recent years as they open out fully to let in more light and air. If you prefer sliding patio doors, there are new models on the market which have thin yet strong frames so they can hold larger panes of glass. More glass and less frames mean more panoramic views of your garden. 4. PAVING THE WAY Speaking of patios, if your flagstones or slabs are out of kilter hire a professional to lift them and check the ground underneath as you may could have issued with rainwater not draining away.
DP_ CutCorners_62x92mm Portrait:Layout 1 13/03/201
5. PREPARING THE GARDEN Rake the lawn to remove dead growth and winter debris. Check your soil for decent drainage and buy a test kit to determine the pH of the soil. If it’s below 6.2 add some lime a couple of weeks before planting. Repair any broken trellises and fencing. 6. SPRING CLEANING INDOORS Starting with the kitchen, degrease the shelves and the tops of cupboards. Clean your extractor hood and replace any charcoal filters. Defrost the freezer and throw out those leftovers from six months. Replace any faulty appliances. Clean your rugs to get rid of any mites which can cause allergies – especially in the bedroom. Shampoo or replace your carpets and any damaged wooden or laminate flooring. Next, attack the bathroom with gusto. Replace any broken tiles and re-seal around bath and shower tray and re-grout between tiles to prevent damp and mould growth. Finally, put your feet up and admire your handy work – you’re ready to enjoy the summer. 14 | KONECT BALERNO

VILLAGE PEOPLE
Hazel Donaldson I take my job seriously, but it’s a lot of fun! Currie resident Hazel Donaldson has been a lollipop lady for 21 years! A Hearts fan who also enjoys stock car racing, Hazel lives with her husband Brian, the janitor at Currie Primary School. They have two grown sons and two grandchildren. “A few years ago I used to have a wee friend, Scott, who stood beside me at the crossing in the mornings,” Hazel Donaldson remembers. “We would watch the cars going by and always waved at the family in a jeep with the number plate ‘PIGGS’, on their journey to another school. Then one day they pulled over at the kerb and got out. It was Christmas time and they gave Scott a selection box and me a box of chocolates. We were shocked but delighted. They said that seeing us wave to them every morning had been the highlight of their day!” Hazel Donaldson was born and raised in Currie. When her boys were young, she applied for the job of School Crossing Patrol, commonly known as Lollipop Lady/ Man. She was attracted to the job because it would mean she’d have the school holidays off. She started out on Riccarton Mains Road, and was later moved to Riccarton Primary School (now called Currie Primary). The job is 20 | KONECT BALERNO
straightforward. Three times a day (morning, lunch time and after school) she helps children to cross the road safely. “On my first day, a lady came to show me what to do,” says Hazel. “But she had to go away to get a hankie, and children were coming up to me to cross. So I just got on with it.” More than 20 years later, Hazel continues to love her job. “I love seeing the children every day, and making sure they cross safely,” she says,
They know my name and shout ‘hello’ from a distance, and I have a laugh with some of them. It is very rewarding.
Hazel says that some drivers speed up to avoid being stopped by her. Some have tooted at her and others have shouted. But she is not ruffled. She knows that her job is to ensure children’s safety, and she takes it very seriously. A few years ago, when Hazel turned 50, she arrived at her crossing to
see brightly coloured birthday banners strung across the stone wall. “It is wonderful to be appreciated,” she says. “The children bring me chocolates, wine, flowers or other gifts at Christmas time and also when school breaks for the summer. Once, when the parents knew I would soon be going on holiday to Benidorm, they gave me euros!” When, as a girl, Hazel was asked what job she would like to do, she joked that she would be a lollipop lady – at that time the job was only offered to those 65 and over. Little did she realise that one day she would actually take on this role, in the process becoming a much loved figure in her community. The Village People column is contributed by Suzanne Green. Suzanne, a freelance writer/editor, lives in Balerno and writes regularly for Konect. She is married to Andy and they have two adult daughters.

KONECT TAKES A LOOK AT THE TRADITIONAL AND THE UNIQUE
You’ve just got engaged; congratulations to you both. Now you’ve a wedding to plan! It’s your wedding so no doubt you have a clear picture of what it should be like. But, if you’re still undecided, here are some ideas from Konect to give you the inspiration for your big day. THE PERFECT VENUE
You don’t need a limo when you’re marrying the Harburn Golf Club Captain
t quil spo ’ tran t s o An ‘alm ondvale Stadium ind Alm beh
Are you the traditional type, or looking for something a little… different? Traditional hotel weddings are still very popular for good reason, as they normally provide a choice of ready-made packages. Choose a hotel with a good reputation for weddings and which is experienced in catering for the numbers you’re looking for. Many hotels have dedicated events co-ordinators who can help get things just right. Always ask for a detailed list of what’s included in the price, so you can set aside money from your budget, well in advance, for other essentials. Other venues such as Kirknewton Stables provide a blank canvas for you to create a bespoke wedding from scratch - it has been known to have clay-pigeon shooting, among its wedding day activities to keep gusts entertained. There’s also a place for small venues like bowling clubs or rugby clubs, that rely on functions to keep themselves ticking over – or historic listed buildings like Bo’ness Town Hall - a real part of the local community. BESPOKE WEDDINGS FOR A TRULY UNIQUE EVENT
The bride wore white…and red DM’s…and rode a horse!
For couples who want to put a unique stamp on their big day... enter the wedding planners, whose task it is to bring often very unusual visions to life. Simon Preece, owner of Food Creations has masterminded, among other requests, a super-hero themed wedding. He said, “The most important thing is to create your day based around what’s special to you and not to worry about what anyone else thinks. That way it’s not only personal but KONECT BALERNO | 31

memorable for everyone attending.” Memorable indeed. In fact, one of the most memorable events for Simon was organising a Nigerian wedding. “The chillies we were asked to cook with were so hot, our chefs had to wear gloves and masks when preparing them.”
DO’S AND DON’TS OF PLANNING YOUR PERFECT WEDDING “Don’t ask family and friends to deal with the reallyimportant tasks” says Simon Preece. Wise words indeed. Auntie Jean might be a dab-hand at whipping up the lightest scones, but a wedding cake is an entirely different proposition. No bride wants to end up with a soggy bottom on her wedding day, so it’s worth investing in a professional service. And, with the number of high-quality independent bakers rising faster than Mary Berry’s soufflés, there are plenty to choose from. Do take out wedding insurance. There’s the recent story of the bride who handed her 150-year old wedding dress - a hand-made, family heirloom - into a dry-cleaner which went bankrupt. The story went viral on social media and was eventually picked up by the BBC. It had a happy outcome as the bride and her dress were eventually reunited but it does illustrate the need to take precautions. “Don’t dismiss a venue because there’s nowhere picturesque to take wedding photos” is the advice from professional photographer, Peter Lawson of Its Photographic. Some venues have naturally beautiful surroundings such as Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club and Kirknewton Stables but what about others? “There are some great wedding venues,” said Peter. “But it sometimes takes a creative eye and a bit of imagination to pick out a romantic spot for that perfect shot.” A graveyard wouldn’t be the most obvious place for a wedding pic, unless of course you were the bride of Dracula but Peter came up with the goods. “The wedding was at Kirkliston Bowling Club which, apart from the bowling green, has no grass nearby.” This time Peter took the bride and groom to the nearby graveyard and found a beautiful old, stone wall across the road – another romantic backdrop. Or take the Almondvale Suite at Livingston FC as an example. How do you find somewhere other than the pitch to find a bit of grass? “I took the wedding party for a short stroll behind the stadium to the River Almond” said Peter. “The surroundings were beautiful. I’ve now taken wedding pictures there for quite a few couples.” So, what’s the most unusual wedding picture Peter has taken? “It has to be the one of the bride on the Clydesdale horse wearing a beautiful white dress…and red Doc Martens! Every picture I take is special but that one is definitely unique.”

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
FAITHFULNESS AND LOYALTY We live in times dominated by social media so what is the place for these possibly dated values? Being loyal and faithful to others are acts of love and are instantly recognised as such by the other person, and they engender feelings of strength and confidence in both of us. For ourselves, we will be rewarded with trust and confidence from others. But who should we be loyal to these days? With family we need to maintain confidence and trust in relationships. Unfaithful acts such as cheating in finance or unfaithfulness are devastating. Even small acts like flirtation, or revealing private or intimate information can be very damaging. A loyal friend will be by your side through good times and bad. Do you stick up for a friend when you hear something about them that is not true or could damage their reputation? Would they stick up for you? In a good work situation both employers and employees should be able to expect loyalty and faithfulness from one another. ‘Speak well of your company because you are part of it!’ Allegiance, fidelity, trustworthiness, reliability, truthfulness. Not words that we hear often through social media, but they are still foundational to relationships, particularly the ones that matter to us.

MONEY MATTERS
YOUR PENSION – NO IT’S NOT! If you have an Individual Personal Pension administered by one of the large insurance companies, you do not own it. It is owned by the Trustees of the insurance company. Strange as it may seem this is very beneficial. Advantage: This means that when you die your pension is not counted as one of your assets and hence is not liable to Inheritance Tax (IHT). Disadvantage: It also means it does not feature in your will and hence your executors do not decide which of your beneficiaries should benefit from any lump sum left in your pension at the time of your death. Solution: You must complete an “Expression of Wishes Form”, sometimes called “Death Benefits Form”. You can get a solicitor to arrange this for you but they will charge a fee. Alternatively, your Insurance Company will have a standard form at no cost.
p mm
A word of warning however. Not all pension providers will actually include all the flexibilities that George Osborne included in his “pension freedom” legislation in 2015. Therefore, the pension holder may be required to transfer to another provider or plan to attain certain benefits. Additionally, anyone holding a Section 32 Buyout Contract or a Retirement Annuity Contract should be aware that these are considered as part of the estate and are therefore subject to inheritance tax. Pension legislation can be particularly complicated so as always independent financial advice should be sought.

“Letters of Note” compiled by Shaun Usher gave me the start for this month’s notes. The first letter in this fascinating collection - ranging from Crick’s letter explaining DNA to his schoolboy son to Elvis Presley to President Nixon - is from Queen Elizabeth II to Eisenhower sending him “her” recipe for drop scones.
We have a long tradition of making scones, flatbread, griddle cakes, farls, potato cakes and bannocks. The hissing as they cook gives the descriptive name of Northumberland’s contribution to the tradition, Singin’ Hinny. The fall-back for country people who grew their own grains and had to be sparing with their use of fuel, scones or oatcakes could be cooked on a griddle on the fire. They get the best from local low protein wheat, barley, oat or rye flours and don’t need yeast, kneading or long baking. They are nutritious, quick and easy to produce and make a meal with soup or stew. Scotland is justly proud of its contribution to the tradition, exporting oat cakes all over the world. Scones are very widely claimed as local food all over Britain. But the fame of farmer’s wife Mrs MacNab of Ballater has lasted since the 19th century. Even Queen Victoria and her guests made a path to her door for scones of “perfect lightness”. Speed and lightness in handling are the secret.
DROP SCONES 56 | KONECT BALERNO
MASTER SCONE MIX From “Great British Bakes” by Mary Anne Boermans. Doubled or tripled her standard dry scone mix can be frozen in bulk and used for small batches of fresh scones. • • • • • •
225g plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 60g butter 30g sugar Milk, sour if you like
METHOD Sift the dry ingredients and add the butter; blitz in a food processor or rub to fine bread crumbs by hand. Tip into a large bowl and using a round-ended knife mix in the milk to a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and make into a round. Cut into 6 wedges. Brush with milk and bake 12 minutes or so, till coloured on top. SWEET VARIATIONS • Orange and sultana: add 40g fruit and 15g candied peel • Lemon and Blueberry: 40g fresh blueberries+ 15g candied lemon peel • Date and walnut; 40g chopped dates + 15g chopped walnuts • Date and lemon: 40g dates + 15g candied lemon • Orange and cranberry: 40g dried or fresh cranberries + 15g candied orange • Ginger and lemon: 40g chopped crystallised ginger + 15g candied lemon • Apple and cinnamon: 50g chopped eating apple + 1 teaspoon dried cinnamon SAVOURY VARIATIONS Leave out the sugar. Add 40 or 50g of the main flavour, and 15-20g of the second. Cheese and herb (1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley, chive or fennel); Breakfast: chopped cooked sausage + red Leicester; Chorizo and Pesto; Cheese and Spring onion; Cheese and Apple; Bacon and Cheese; Peanut butter: crunchy peanut butter. The monthly recipe and food notes are contributed by Anne Pinkerton. Anne is a local cook who believes that everybody can enjoy seasonal food and can have pleasure preparing meals for their family and friends.
THE QUEEN’S DROP SCONES • • • • • • •
4 teacups plain flour 4 tablespoons sugar 2 teacups milk 2 eggs 3 teaspoons cream of tartar 2 teaspoons bi-carb 50g butter, melted
METHOD Sift dry goods together. Beat eggs, sugar and about half the milk together. Add the liquid little by little to the flour. Use a bit more if the mixture seems very stiff. Fold in the melted butter. Enough for 16! I halved the quantities and we had lots for seven, hungry, after a winter walk. The Queen omitted how to cook the scones in her letter. But heat a heavy bottomed frying pan. Butter or lightly oil the surface - it should smoke slightly. Drop tablespoonful of batter on to the pan and cook till bubbles show. With a palate knife, turn the pancakes and cook the other side. It might take a couple of times to get the temperature correct but don’t worry, the batter is very forgiving and traditional amounts of jam and butter will make a tea time feast.
Mrs macnabs scones • • • • • •
450g plain white flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 scant teaspoons cream of tartar 50g butter 1 egg, well beaten 300ml butter milk or sour milk ; use ½ teaspoon of lemon juice to “sour” fresh milk
METHOD Heat the oven to 220oC. Sift the dry ingredients twice. Rub in the butter (use food processor or hand blender). Stir in the egg then the milk. Stir till dough collects in one lump. Turn onto a floured surface and knead lightly and quickly till smooth. Tear off small pieces and form into round shape. DO NOT roll out. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes till just coloured. Split and eat with butter and jam - or whatever you prefer.
