In frequently difficult weather conditions the firm has, with high standards of professionalism and integrity, completed a complex project which has substantially enhanced the appearance of our home and garden. Some of the innovations which have been incorporated result from recommendations made by Dean himself, for which we are especially grateful.” – T.M. – Balerno

Editor’s Message I hope the summer holidays have been going well for those who've got children off school – it's been perfect weather for exploring and enjoying the local area if you've stayed home this year. It will soon be time to think about the new term, don't forget to browse the Clubs and Classes pages for activities, sports and hobbies for all ages. Our local history article this month looks at Lennox Tower, one of the older structures in our villages, dating back to the 15th century. It has been in ruins now for almost as long as it was in use. Its history is little-known - we're not even sure if it was in fact built for the Lennox family although it has been attributed to them for centuries. See the article on page 8. We have a back-to-school themed Though of the Month from Pat, a quick look at local playgroups, a suggested walk in Uphall from Karen, as well as all our other regular columns. Congratulations to John Black of Balerno who won the crossword competition in the last issue. This month Tony Harper's Hair Studio in Balerno is offering a conditioning treatment plus a cut and blow dry for one lucky Konect reader, so well worth sending your crossword entry in! They have regular offers so check their advert on page 20. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory!

Edinburgh” in the 1880s, wrote that “Among the six chief places mentioned as being fortified and garrisoned in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh are Lennox Tower on the loyalists' or queen's side, and Curriehill for the king.” This doesn't seem inconsistent with the fact that the Lennox family were vehemently against the queen, believing her to have been implicated in Darnley's murder.
An underground passage that saved it from siege; a story intertwined with Mary Queen of Scots; maybe even a ghost.....if the stones could talk, the ruins of Lennox Tower in Currie would have plenty of stories to tell. Standing today in an out-of-the-way location near the Water of Leith between Balerno and Currie, in its day it was a strong, if small, fortified tower house. Its origins are lost - it's unclear exactly who owned it for much of its history, but for centuries it has been said to have belonged to the Earls of Lennox - the Stewart family from which Lord Darnley sprang, the unfortunate second husband of Mary Queen of Scots. It dates from the 15th century and according to tradition it was visited by Mary. Given that the 4th Earl of Lennox was her father-in-law, it is quite possible that she and Darnley spent time here - before his murder and her father-in-law's subsequent witness against Mary in the murder enquiry. But the facts are by no means clear. The historian James Grant, who published “Old and New

It was a rectangular keep with thick walls and surrounded by a moat. Sited on high land above the river it would have had beautiful views over the Firth of Forth. We can tell from the ruins that it was possibly surrounded by a barmkin, and that other buildings stood between the tower and the moat. The lower floor had three barrel-vaulted interconnecting cellars. There was a long hall at the upper level, and deep recesses with stone seats. There was possibly an upper floor or parapet walkway above. A large fireplace with 2 flues are still visible in one of the walls. article continues on page 40

Spotlight on: Chantilly Lace
By Helen-Jane Shearer
W
Holly describes her vision for Chantilly Lace: “When you walk through the door looking for your wedding dress, you need to feel really special. My experience of shopping for a dress was that the shop staff didn't treat it as if it were the most important thing happening to me at that time. But it should be! Like in the movies,” she laughs, “where the bride-to-be gets champagne at her dress fitting and is made to feel really special. That's what Chantilly Lace will be like.”
“When I was looking for my wedding dress, I couldn't find any shops selling non-designer dresses. It was impossible to find a nice dress for less than £1000 - and most are much more.” Holly Sneddon is explaining to me the story behind Chantilly Lace, her new bridal shop opening in Bathgate this month (August). “I thought, 'There has to be a better option, there has to be a way of having a beautiful dress without paying those prices'” So, with her own experience behind her of trailing around countless bridal shops, Holly set about finding a solution. The answer was in importing non-branded dresses at a fraction of the price of the designer brands. And for the past two years, she has been running a very successful online business selling bridesmaids dresses, flower girl dresses, veils and accessories by importing them at a much reduced rate and selling them online. Following the success of this, she is now extending the principal to a full bridal shop, where beautiful, quality and of course affordable bridal dresses will be stocked in addition to her current range of bridesmaids and flower girl dresses. You will be able to visit and see the dresses, have a fitting and choose from a wide range of beautiful dresses that look as stunning as the designer ones, are great quality but leave a much smaller hole in your wedding budget. “I want a shop where anyone, from any walk of life, can come and find a beautiful dress without worrying about the price tag”, she explains. “We stock a wide range of dresses to suit all tastes, from ball gown styles, or modern elegant fish tail dresses, or 50s style....really something for everyone.”
14
What else will be different about Chantilly Lace? “You will be able to buy bridesmaids or flower girl dress on the spot and take it home if we have the size and style in stock that you want. That is very unusual for a bridal shop.” They will have samples of many styles of wedding dresses in stock in sizes 8 – 20, so you will be able to try something your size and then order the style you want. Holly can order in up to size 24. “We also have a huge range of veils in stock, at least 30 different styles, which again you will be able to purchase and take home on the spot.” The shop was in the process of being painted when I spoke with Holly. She explained that the interior décor and feel of it is very important. “Being in a beautifully painted and decorated shop to choose your dress is important, it's all part of the experience.” It sounds like the Chantilly Lace experience is a must for all local bridesto-be. The shop opens at 13 Hopetoun Street, Bathgate, on the 10th of August.

Technology
A better reception
T
TV's been around for a long time and we're all familiar with the standard roof aerial's coaxial cable. But what happens when an old-style aerial isn't enough? It might be because your Freeview reception isn't up to scratch, or because you want to upgrade to Freesat - or it might be because you have a Smart TV that's just begging to be connected to your broadband, or because you want to have TVs in multiple rooms. Freeview boxes can be particularly prone to reception problems, especially if they're the fairly cheap ones you can buy in supermarkets. If the signal isn't strong enough you'll encounter picture freezes and the picture degrading into a series of large blocks. Upgrading your aerial to a better one can help address this: the better the signal going in, the better the experience you're going to get from your TV. Remember too that aerials can benefit more than just your TV: you can also buy dedicated aerials for FM radio and DAB radio.
The upgrades that can feed your high-tech TV by satellites, and while many are scrambled plenty aren't; in most cases, accessing them requires a slightly different kind of satellite dish to the one you'd use for Sky. If you've bought a TV in the last few years there's a very good chance it's a smart TV with some kind of internet features: even relatively affordable sets such as Finlux's £269 32F8030-T comes with internet services including BBC iPlayer, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. While some such TVs include wireless network connections, including the Finlux we've just mentioned, home wireless networks aren't usually up to the job of streaming HD TV - especially if other family members are using the same network for their laptops, tablets or smartphones. For best results we'd recommend a wired broadband connection, which connects to your TV via an Ethernet cable - and we'd make the same recommendation for smart Blu-Ray players with internet features as well as games consoles such as PlayStations and Xboxes.
If the signal's good enough, you can run the aerial to multiple rooms and install extra points without having to install a new aerial. The process is fairly straightforward - your aerial has a box called a splitter, which provides multiple connections for the cables to your new points – but it's important to use the right cable: cheap cables can suffer from interference and poor signal quality. If in doubt, ask a professional installer. Another popular option is Freesat, which offers all the benefits of satellite TV without the expensive monthly subscriptions. With over 150 channels including six free HD ones it's a great service, but of course you'll also need a satellite dish so you can receive it. You'll need a dedicated Freesat SD or Freesat HD box, too, although if you're an ex-Sky customer you should be able to use your existing dish with your new Freesat box. Freesat isn't the only satellite service you can access. Many European channels are broadcast
18
The problem for many households is that the TV, games console or smart Blu-Ray player is nowhere near the internet router, and while you can run Ethernet cabling over door frames and around skirting boards to connect your device to the router the results can be rather unsightly. A professional installer can run the cabling and make it invisible, and we think it's well worth doing: not only will you have the best possible speeds from your internet connection, but you won’t have to look at any unsightly cabling.

Thought for the Month
Starting at a new school or in a new class?
M
look for someone who is being quiet, because they will probably be feeling worse than you are and will be very grateful if you can start a conversation with them. You can do this by making a comment and then asking a question, ‘It’s hard keeping up with all this writing isn’t it, do you manage all right?’ or something similar. Then you can look out for them going into class, at break times, or outside school. Remember that it’s fine to have 2-3 friends, not everyone needs a crowd. Making friends in class is good, but so are friendships on the bus, at an after school activity, club or sports. Remember that true friendships take time to build naturally and you don’t need to change to fit into them. Being yourself at your best is what people will like.
Maybe you have someone in your family who is starting at a new school soon? Or just moving into a new class or school year? What will they be most concerned about? It is probably going to be friendships, how will I keep old friends, make new ones, know how to choose a good friend? For children in primary school family and friends can help by talking about the positive aspects of school, and arranging play dates with others who will be going to the same school. You can use other mums as a source of information about the school, and the school itself if you are new to the area. For older children and those starting secondary school one of the principle worries will be about making friends (and this actually applies to all of us who are going into new situations). Look around for the sorts of people you would like to be friends with. If you feel a bit lonely,

Money Matters
Pensions: All change
I
Advantages of a pension plan 1) Tax relief on contributions up to £40,000 a year at the member’s highest marginal rate with the ability to carry forward any unused allowance. 2) In most cases the pension will be free from Inheritance Tax. 3) From age 55 onwards, 25% of the fund can be taken as a tax free lump sum but there is now a limit.
In previous articles we have mentioned the benefits of pensions i.e. you get tax relief at your marginal rate, the fund grows in a tax efficient environment and at the end on retirement you can take 25% tax free cash. That is all well and good, but the government is as always tinkering with the rules so it is worth outlining some key changes. Allowed contributions From 6th April 2014 the amount that you will be allowed to contribute to a personal pension and get tax relief will be reduced to £40,000 or 100% of total income, whichever is the lower.
By Personal Money Management
Increase to drawdown arrangements From 26th March 2013 the maximum amount of income that may be taken under a capped drawdown arrangement was increased to 120% of the Government Approved Annuity Rates known as the GAD.
Key tax factors to be aware of 1) A tax charge UP TO 45% if contributions exceed the available annual allowance. 2) A lump sum death benefit charge of 55% if the benefits are in drawdown and the member does not have a spouse at the date of death. 3) It is absolutely imperative that professional advice is taken before a member reaches 75 as there are considerable tax disadvantages if appropriate action is not taken before the member’s 75 birthday.
Reduction in the lifetime limit From 6th April 2014 the lifetime limit will be reduced to £1.25 million unless the member applies for one of several forms of protection.

Local walk
Wanders in a Community Woodland
Karen Murray revels in the tranquillity of a local woodland in Uphall
that has been cleaned up, replanted and generally given a make-over.
I
Here we fared better. Managed by West Lothian Council the woodland has a number of entrances in the village and off the B8046. There is no real parking apart from on residential streets but as long as you are considerate you will not cause a problem, or park on West Main Street and walk up through the housing estate to find an entrance.
I don’t know what the weather is doing as you read this month’s issue but as we have all been basking in glorious sunshine during the school summer holidays (a rare event from my experience) walks have been more plentiful in our household than is the norm. As I work most days, enjoying a stroll in the evening sunshine comes quite high up my list of good things to do, and managing to persuade the kids to come too is a bonus. They do sometimes wonder why I drag them off in the car in order to walk however and they don’t necessarily agree with the idea of researching walks that others can do from their own doorstep.
By Karen Murray
We entered the woodland from behind the houses on St Andrew’s Drive, going through a wide gate and were immediately on a recently surfaced path. The boys had a Frisbee with them which meant we didn’t get very far along the path at first but fun was being had. There are benches and sign posts to help you negotiate the woods and while most of the paths are surfaced, some remain grass tracks but with the good weather there were no muddy walkways to worry about. The woodland is 13 hectares and contains some dense woodland, up to 60 years old, with areas of open grassland where the wild flowers grow in profusion - deliberately so. It had been very overgrown but thinning and removal of non-native species in the improvement work has increased the natural light and improved the biodiversity.
One such gorgeous evening, kids in tow, we headed to Uphall to search out some walking routes. I had been informed that you can take a circular route of just ¾ of a mile around the Uphall Bing and I am sure you can. Unfortunately we could not find an entrance to this walk - if you know where to park up and find this walk please let me know! In deference to the increasing boredom of the children as we drove in circles, we headed on into Uphall itself in search of the Uphall Community Woodland I had also heard mention of as it one of those overgrown woodlands 34
The woodland is obviously a haven for dog walkers and we met plenty along the way and there are great views not only of the Pentlands but of the local high point of Binny Craig too. Sitting as it does behind the houses, the woodland provides a green wedge between the housing and the agricultural land behind it. However, you can access the fields behind the woods via a number of stiles and needless to say this looked far more interesting to two young lads than the organised structure network of paths. Over a stile we hopped and into the fields where the narrow paths are overgrown with meadow plants. One Frisbee had to be confiscated as we walked through waist high foliage. Like the woodlands you could wander quite a way here among the fields.
Please remember to mention The Konect Directory when contacting advertisers
If you are after a longer walk you could take the gravel track that ultimately leads to Binny Craig; alternatively you can head back on the same gravel track to West Main Street. We decided to retrace our steps through the fields and then back into the woodland and through the housing estate to the car. Having told the boys were doing a quick walk of less than a mile, I think we may have wandered around for nearer three miles and it was way past bedtime when we returned home. The sun
was still warming our backs however and there was no school next day so why worry. This community woodland is a great place for a quick stint of exercise or a more leisurely stroll and if you live in Uphall it is the perfect place to pop out with the dog, the husband/wife or on your own for some peace and quiet, and if you don’t live in Uphall, visit it anyway as it is a tranquil little spot right on the edge of a busy little town.

Lennox Tower (continued)
p8 There was an underground
passage linking Lennox Tower with the Water of Leith. This tunnel is described by Dr William Nisbet in the Statistical Account of Currie in the 1790s as being recently blocked up as cattle kept wandering down into it. Here is one of the stories associated with the underground tunnel :
Drawing by A Archer of Lennox Tower from the West, 1836.
“It is supposed that the garrison (in war time) secured by this means a clandestine supply of water, and that during a siege, when they were hard pressed for provisions and the enemy in confident expectation of starving them out, a soldier accidentally caught some fish in his bucket (in the act of drawing water) which the governor boastingly held out in sight of the besiegers. On seeing this unexpected store, the assailants hastily raised the siege, deeming it hopeless to attempt to starve a garrison that was so
mysteriously supplied. It is probable that this episode occurred during the war between the king's and queen's party, which culminated in the siege of Edinburgh Castle in 1573”. James Grant, Old and New Edinburgh, Cassell's 1880. James VI said to have used Lennox Tower as a hunting lodge; George Heriot may have acquired it; the facts are murky. But by the time Dr Nisbet was writing his Statistical Account in 1790s, it was well and truly ruined and being used as a pig sty. He writes, “The extent of the rampart, or out wall, which goes round the brow of the hill, is about 304 paces, or 1212 feet. The under part of it is now occupied as a hog-stye.” We have drawings of the ruins from 1836; and in 1920, archaeologists visiting from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) recorded that “the ruin, in poor condition now forms a rock garden.” Today the ruins still rest in peace in their secluded spot. It seems unlikely that we will ever know the real stories they have to tell.

Gardening in August By Anne Pinkerton
T
This month is often seen as a gap month; the summer flowers begin to fade and the harvest of vegetables begins to feel samey. It can also be the hottest and/or the wettest month in Scotland. The real heat has helped things ripen and begin to taste as they should. To see how to support plants that have grown lanky, visit the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. The enormous herbaceous border is managed so as to look spectacular in August and September. Trim and shape hedges leave them in good shape for winter and snow loads. Prune climbing plants and trained fruit trees. Cut back and tie -in climbing roses making a good shape for next year. Harvest lavender and other herbs you want to dry in bunches. Propagate lavender, Hebe,Box, Ceanethus and other semi-ripe cuttings. Plant out leeks and winter brasicca. Re-new 1/3 of the strawberry patch by planting the runners you potted up earlier in the year. If you missed doing this you can pot up runners now and keep over winter for spring planting. Pest control - introduce bio controls to the greenhouse; start burning black-spot infected leaves. It’s too late to spray. Earwigs can be a menace for carnations, chrysa nthemums, clematis and dahlias. The traditional remedy is to stuff small flowerpots with straw or wood shavings and put them on canes at flower head height. The earwigs rest up there in the day when you can catch them and deal with them. Plan - Early autumn is the best time to plant shrubs and trees. The soil is at its warmest and the plants get time to settle before winter. You need not restrict yourself to whatever the nearest DIY store happens to have - often these shops have stock out of season for Scotland (they are national chains) so you are better off going to local people who know our conditions. Look at bulbs and don’t leave it too late to order them. 42

Charity
Scottish Newfoundland Club
I
It’s that time of year again, time for the Scottish Newfoundland Club to hold their annual Charity Fund Show at Humbie Holdings, nr Kirknewton. Last year we held the show to help local girl Rebecca White from East Calder who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. We raised £1,000 to start the fund for a MyTobii which works with eye movement and would be a fantastic help for her. The fund now stands at over £5.000 which is great news for the family. This is the 20th anniversary of the Scottish Newfoundland Club and in those 20 years
Companion Dog Show in Kirknewton we have raised thousands of pounds for various charities. This year the funds raised will go to Newfoundland Welfare. We hope many people will come along with their dogs and their families and enjoy a great day out. There will be lots of specials on offer, rosettes, trophies, lots of raffle prizes, teas, coffees, burgers and homemade baking. We hope this year will be a great success and make our 20th anniversary show really special. We would like to thank everyone at Konect for their support and adverts throughout the years.

Recipe & Food Notes Swedish Lemon Potatoes 500g Waxy potatoes, Anya or Charlotte; half cooked and sliced Gratted zest and juice of a large lemon Spoon of Marmite Black pepper Chopped parsley for decoration 100g butter melted with the Marmite Method Mix the melted butter, Marmite and lemon juice and zest together. Layer up the sliced potatoes in a ovenproof dish, pouring a little butter/lemon/ Marmite mixture over each layer as you go. Dot the top with a little butter to help in the baking. Cover closely with cling wrap and a layer of foil. Bake in the oven at 180C for 35/45 minutes. Baking the dish covered ensures it is moist and the lemon salt taste goes into all the potatoes. This goes well with ham or cold meats and a salad. Classic Mayonnaise Mayonnaise is the basic sauce from which many others are created. Making your own is not difficult but requires a calm steady hand and is much helped by the use of a blender wand However the best texture is achieved by mixing slowly by hand with a wooden spoon or a fork. 2 egg yolks at room temperature 1/2 pint oil; half and half sunflower and refined olive oil. Extra virgin oil has too strong a taste. Method Put the oil in a jug from which it is easy to control the flow. The oil and yolks should be the same temperature. salt, ground black pepper, mustard powder squeeze of lemon juice/ little wine vinegar In a shallow bowl beat the yolks with the salt, pepper and mustard. I use a fork. Slowly DROP by DROP beat in the oil. Gradually the mixture thickens; as it does you can add the oil more quickly and also change to using a wooden spoon. When about half the oil has been used add a little lemon juice or vinegar. Beat it well in.

Condiments and Sauces By Anne Pinkerton
Then continue adding the oil until it is all incorporated and you have a glossy, thick, creamy, yellow sauce. The original recipe I was given by an aunt ended with.... “and do not let your mind wander. Good advice; watch the slow development of the emulsion and all will be well! If you are unlucky and the sauce curdles, start again with one egg yolk adding the curdled mixture drop by drop. Rose-Marie Sauce add a little tomato puree and tomato ketchup, a dash of dry sherry, a drop of Tabasco and a tablespoon of whipped double cream to half the basic mayonnaise above.
Coronation Sauce needs a little more work but the real thing is delicious and subtle. 1 small onion finely copped and cooked in 2 teaspoons of oil till transparent. To this add 2 teaspoons mild curry powder and a teaspoon of tomato puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add 1/2 wine glass red wine, 3 tablespoons water, a bay leaf, 2 teaspoons apricot jam and salt and black pepper and a good squeeze of lemon juice. Simmer for 8 to 10 minutes and cool. Sieve the mixture and use to add to taste to mayonnaise. Finally add 2 tablespoons of whipped double cream. Use to coat cooked, cold chicken. Barbeque Sauce is a sauce made of sauces. Mix to taste but starting with about equal quantities of Brown sauce and Tomato ketchup. Add a little Worcester sauce and a drop or 2 of Tabasco. Sweeten with some tomato chutney and sharpen with some Dijon mustard. Mix well. Spread this on chicken thighs and leave them to take in the flavours for 30 minutes before grilling or cooking on the barbeque.
