In frequently difficult weather conditions the firm has, with high standards of professionalism and integrity, completed a complex project which has substantially enhanced the appearance of our home and garden. Some of the innovations which have been incorporated result from recommendations made by Dean himself, for which we are especially grateful.” – T.M. – Balerno

Editor’s Message Welcome to the July issue of the Konect Directory. With the summer holidays in mind, we’ve put together some suggestions of things to do within a short drive of home, see pages 8 and 9. If you’re lucky enough to be going away we’ve got a column on travel gadgets, as well as all our usual regular columns. “The Thought for the Month” also has a summer activity theme with suggestions for free things to do together as a family. In competition prizes this month, the Pentland Fry is offering a 16” pizza with a topping of your choice in the crossword competition, and the Pitstop in Addiewell is running a competition to win gym membership and/or soft play party. Congratulations to Gillian Murdoch of Currie who was a winner in last month’s magazine. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory, have a great summer!

Summer family activities, adventures and excursions

Keep that date

What to do on those sunny, or wet, days during the school holidays when all the family are at home? Often, when the pressure to organise something arrives, it is too late to have a relaxed look at all the myriad of options available locally on our doorstep, nearby or close enough for a full day out. Here is a range of contacts and ideas, some with free entry, many with free entry or very reasonable rates for younger children, to solve some of your ‘what to do’ dilemmas.

Birds & beasts

You can handle and fly owls, or organise a children’s birthday party, at the Scottish Owl Centre in West Lothian, which is home to around 100 owls. After being based on the remote west coast for 7 years, the owl centre relocated in 2012 to the enclosed walled garden of the old Polkemmet mansion house within Polkemmet Country Park. The park also houses a well known sculpture close to the M8 called ‘The Horn’ that occasionally, if standing close to the base, can be heard playing bits of music and poetry.  www.scottishowlcentre.com/ 01501 228 184 Almondell Shetlands near Kirknewton offer Shetland Pony parties and personal pony sessions. They can cater for children as young as 2 years old up to 10.  www.almondellshetlands.co.uk/ 07740 203 187

Technology

High tech holidays

S

Some of the most useful travel gadgets are the simplest. The TanSafe is a great example: it looks like a standard bottle of sun cream, but it's a secret safe that's big enough for your cash, cards, keys and even your mobile phone (but not a phone case). It's even watertight, so it can protect your phone from the odd splash. At £7.99 it's cheap too. Some of our favourite technology solves problems we thought were with us forever - such as creased shirts. For £34.99, the Shirt Shuttle MK2 is a hanger that you wrap your freshly ironed shirt or blouse around, folding it and clipping it shut to protect your shirt from creasing. How attractive it is depends on how much you hate ironing: a travel iron will set you back around £10, while a portable garment steamer such as Rowenta's DR5050 promises to unwrinkle anything for £30.

If you're travelling with children, there's no shortage of technology that can keep them amused on even the longest trip. Apple's iPad Mini is ideal, providing all the fun of an iPad without the weight or price, but it's still quite expensive at £269; an iPod touch does much the same thing in a smaller case for half the price, or a quarter of the price if you're buying used. If you prefer Android tablets Google's Nexus is a good buy at £159.

18

Have a very happy holiday with some high-tech help All of these devices can run apps, and you can copy video from your computer or buy or rent videos from wherever you can find an internet connection. We'd advise against 3G devices that connect to the mobile phone network: there are often very high charges for data roaming. The problem with many travel-related gadgets is that they can be very large and very heavy. For example, a wireless speaker such as the Supertooth Disco weighs a massive 1.1kg, and it's a hefty size too. When it comes to travel speakers, small can be beautiful: the £18 X-Mini II Capsule speaker weighs just 82g but it punches way above its weight. It doesn't sound as good as a top-end speaker system but it's a vast improvement on any smartphone's speakers. If size really does matter, you can even cut the size of your plugs - but beware, because it can be pricey. The Mu Folding Plug is a 3-pin plug with a USB socket on the other side, and it folds down to a titchy 1.4cm - but at around £25 for one, it's considerably more expensive than standard plugs. Now that we're travelling with lots of gadgets, powering and/or recharging them can be a problem: it's not unusual to have a camera, an e-reader, a smartphone and a music player competing for the same plug socket as the TV or hairdryer. Rather than packing multiple chargers or 4-way extension leads, it might be a better idea to invest in a 4-port worldwide travel charger, which comes with 4 USB ports in the top and a collection of interchangeable plugs that work almost anywhere in the world, all for around £10. Such chargers aren't powerful enough for iPads, which draw massive amounts of power, but they're fine for smartphones, cameras and other popular bits of kit.

Thought for the Month

T

The summer holidays present an opportunity to add to the memory bank for our children. Positive family memories create a lasting sense of belonging and a shared identity in the family unit. They build security for a child and a strong sense of safety. These activities strengthen the bonds between parents and teenagers, and these ‘emotional deposits’, made earlier in childhood make communication easier at the inevitable times of stress and conflict down the line. Creating memories is easy and need not be expensive. Look at the following ideas and see if any would work in your family? •

Create a bedtime ritual …. For younger children this can be a story and reminding each other of the best part of the day. For older children and teenagers, try meeting in the kitchen at 9.30pm for a snack eaten together.

• Go for a ‘nature walk’… in the middle of the night. • Plan a ‘help a neighbour’ day… do a surprise good turn for a neighbour , make

Summer Holidays By Pat Banfill

a cake, a card, wash their car, weed the garden etc.

• Have a summer party with a theme for family and friends. •

Have a good family fight… chase each other round the house throwing soft toys, or foam balls, or have a water pistol fight in the garden.

• Have breakfast outside and watch the sun rise. •

Make a gingerbread family portrait. Buy or make gingerbread people biscuits. Using icing pens get everyone to decorate them. Then have fun eating each other.

Buy some hair gel and have fun making ridiculous hairstyles and take photos Fun, plus excitement, plus laughter, plus creativity equals memories that will not be quickly forgotten!

Travel By Gerry Lynch

Gerry Lynch, a Juniper Green resident who recently travelled as a passenger in a cargo ship, shares his experience with us...

I

I recently made a journey I had been promising myself for years - a voyage as passenger in a cargo ship.

I embarked at Southampton on 5th April and left the vessel in Portbury Dock, Avonmouth, on 5th May, having called at Barcelona, Salerno, Piraeus, Izmir, Alexandria, Limassol, Ashdod, Salerno again, Savona and Setubal. I chose this voyage as offering a Mediterranean break, but not too long, and my choice of carrier was limited to those with a high upper age limit, but there are voyages available to all manner of places, of varying durations and with age limit up to 85. You might want to take a shorter trip as a taster, or you can be bold and opt for 42 days to or from Australia, 49 to Hong Kong or 97 round the world. The ships offered are cargo liners, i.e. they follow a defined route and schedule, and are mostly container ships, although I was on a ro-ro car carrier, a 52,000 ton Italian ship with 25 crew (14 Italian and 11 Filipino). The cargo was almost all cars, up to 2600 of them, with some heavy stuff, trailers, earth movers, tractors, farm machinery and even buses, on the lowest of the nine cargo decks. By the nature of the ships, deck space is limited, no good if you want to jog a few laps every morning, but quite enough for my needs - room to walk about a little, watch port activities or just sit in the sun to read or snooze. Accommodation, naturally, varies between companies and

between ships, but is always comfortable, with en-suite toilet and shower, towels provided and changed. There are usually laundry facilities, so clothing needs can be kept to a minimum. I was in an outside cabin and would always recommend outside; having no view gives cabins a “cooped-up” feel. There was a lounge and a fitness room. and some of the big container ships have pools. Ships without medical facilities are limited to 12 passengers, but my biggest surprise and disappointment was that I was the only passenger on that trip. Although I got on perfectly well with the crew - you eat in the officers` mess room, from the same galley - I had looked forward to meeting a few people and some social chit-chat, to say nothing of sharing taxi expenses ashore! I went ashore only twice, in Izmir (not quite downtown Juniper Green) and Salerno port. In some of the ports, time and distance were limiting factors, while in Alexandria, Limassol and Salerno (2) it rained for the only times on the trip, and in Ashdod I took such exception to the attitude of the Israeli immigration officers that I “boycotted” it. Overall, though, an enjoyable change (not least of weather) and, at less than €100 a day all round, not over-expensive for a month`s holiday. Would I go again? Yes, provided I could be sure of having some fellow passengers (or take my own).

Money Matters

Inheritance Tax – Part 2

As most of you are aware on death your estate is liable to Inheritance Tax on any assets above £325,000 if you are single or £650,000 if you are married or in a civil partnership.

A

you need access to it then this is available, plus you get tax relief at 30%. The disadvantage is EIS are often considered relatively high risk.

How to avoid this 40% tax

A major insurance company have introduced a Wealth Preservation Bond (WPB) which really ticks all the boxes. The WPB provides you with the opportunity to reduce your potential IHT liability whilst maintaining access to the capital invested at a risk level to suit your personal circumstances. This is of particular importance at the present time, given our ability to live longer and the need to adapt to changing circumstances.

First Strategy:Put a lump sum in a Capital Investment Bond and then wrap a trust around it and if you survive seven years then the asset is outside your estate for IHT. Most people don’t like this idea because in order for it to be successful you have to give up all access to the funds and many people are worried about needing the money for living expenses or long term care etc. Second Strategy:Put some of your assets in an Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and provided you live two years then these assets are exempt from IHT. The major advantage of the EIS approach is that the money is never actually out of your estate, and hence should

Third Strategy:-

IHT planning requires considerable specialist knowledge. Always seek a financial adviser with this specific experience before considering any of the strategies mentioned above. Written by: Peter M Marshall PhD, DipPFS, AFPC Personal Money Management 0131 538 7390

Spotlight on:

Balerno Bowling Club

B

Balerno Bowling Club was formed in 1886 to provide recreational and social activities for the many gentlemen residing in the area together with the many workers employed in the mills, quarries, railway goods yard and farms within the area. Many local friendships and rivalries from Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green and Slateford were formed on the village bowling greens over many years. Balerno Bowling Club play bowls in the highly competitive Water of Leith Bowling Association. Between Balerno and Murrayfield, ten bowling Clubs compete every week during the bowling season for the honour of winning either the first or second XVI’s leagues. Between 1964 and 1975 Balerno Bowling Club enjoyed its most rewarding period with the Club winning four Scottish national titles and two British honours.

The Clubhouse built in 1967 has an impressive viewing area spanning the entire width of the bowling green together with a downstairs function suite that was specifically built for celebrating these special occasions with your friends and colleagues. Today, while we appear to have lost our competitive edge that once made us one of the great bowling clubs in Scotland we still strive to provide a wonderful environment to simply enjoy a social or competitive game of bowls with friends. As a community it is important that we maintain some facilities in the village for social and recreational facilities for gentlemen, ladies and junior members. If you are considering taking up bowling or just want to enjoy a special night at the Club, come along and see for yourself what we can offer you - you will not regret it!

Green Fingers Gardening in July By Anne Pinkerton

M

Most gardening notes for July lists ways to conserve water, hoe in weeds, mulch and other ways to prevent moisture loss or early bolting of salad crops. Also keep plants free of bugs and disease - be alert to early signs of blight and molds. Strawberries and potatoes are the two crops most easily devastated. Check www. potato.org.uk/bilght and www.blightwatch.co.uk. Flower Garden Dead-head roses, tie in new shoots of climbing roses, train them horizontal to encourage more flowers. Keep cutting sweetpeas and chop lupins and crainsbill geraniums to encourage another flowering. Start planting autumn flowering bulbs, such as nerines and colchicums (autumn crocus). Fruit Garden Think about the shape of stoned fruit trees, prune and tie in after picking the fruit. Cut down raspberry canes that have been harvested. Peg down and root strawberry runners for rejuvenation of the strawberry bed in the autumn. Harvest Regular picking of beans, peas and courgettes will keep the vegetables good to eat and encourage other pods to develop. This is the start of rewards from all the year`s work. Salads, potatoes and legumes will all be flourishing. Sow Spring cabbage, turnips, chicory and fennel. Also sow succession salad crops and strawberry seed if you want a special variety. Collect seeds, put them in paper envelopes, name and date them. Lawn Feed if the grass is under stress. Cut regularly; little and often with grass box off is best if it’s dry. This allows the short cuttings to become a mulch. Relax, enjoy your work, dream and plan. Take photos of the garden at its best and use them later to help correct things that were not exactly as you wished. 42

Virus Scam

Don’t be scammed. Get smart.

T

Follow these simple steps to avoid being caught out.

Police Virus- Users have had access to their machines blocked whilst in use. The intimidating and worrying message flashed in front of them claims to be from various police forces, implying users have acted illegally on their machine. The page then claims users can regain access to their machine if they purchase UKash vouchers.

2. Don’t part with any money.

There are always viruses and scams doing the rounds. Two popular ones at the moment are the “Police” virus and the “Microsoft” scam.

Remember- no authority or police force would request money from you if you have acted in any way illegally. Don’t part with any money, it’s a scam. Microsoft Scam- As highlighted recently on a recent episode of “Rip Off Britain” the Microsoft scam is still doing the rounds. The general approach seems to be that they claim people have fallen prey to a virus and ask to log into their machines remotely. They often show people a fake page listing errors and virus messages. Naturally they claim they will remove the virus for a handling fee.

By Sort My PC

1. Don’t give anyone access to your machine if they have initiated the call.

3. Don’t panic and think logically. Listen to the language and look at the grammar carefully. 4. Call us first before you do anything and check! If you have fallen victim to these scams and need further help contact SortmyPC. We have dealt with many customers who have, the important thing is to remove the virus and restore your confidence! Recipe & Food Notes

S

Salt is the exception in food seasonings in that it's a mineral; all other herbs and spices are derived from plants.

Sodium chloride - NaCl - occurs naturally in huge under-ground deposits where it is mined, or extracted from seawater by evaporation. Salt is essential to all animal life but excess in the diet is harmful. There is evidence to show that man has traded salt since the Neolithic era - some of the first over-land trade routes were salt roads. Salt has been used as a display of wealth and importance since ancient classical Greek times. In medieval Europe the placing of the salt and your position relative to it at the table indicated how important you were thought to be. The most elaborate and beautiful salt pot may be the one made by Benvenuto Cellini in 1543 for Francis 1 of France. Salt cellars have been made from gold, silver, crystal, fine porcelain, turned woods and are collected and used still. Some people put a few grains of rice in the pot to help keep salt dry and easy to shake. Cellini salt pot

The salt most commonly consumed at home is rock salt, much of it mined in Cheshire. It's washed and processed with some additives to ensure it flows easily, and has iodine added to prevent goitre, or Derbyshire neck - so named because this

disease was often found in people who lived away from the sea. Sel de Mere, Maldon Salt and pink salt from the Himalayas are all on offer in the shops. All these salts have their special properties and do taste different but their food value is the same as other salt. They look lovely and people enjoy milling their salt or displaying crystal salt in fine salt-cellars on the table. Before refrigeration and frozen food a huge amount of salt was needed for storage and preservation of meat and fish. Without its skilled use people would have had a very restricted winter diet. Salt and brine conserved pork and other meats and without it we would not have corned beef, bacon, kippers or ham. Olives are too bitter to eat unless soaked in brine for about five weeks, and anchovies could not have become enjoyed world wide and enhance foods as varied as pizza or Gentleman's Relish. It would not have been possible for town dwellers to enjoy cheap butter from New Zealand or Ireland without the preserving qualities of salt. Think how dull baking would be if we had been restricted to lard and dripping, remembering we were not traditionally users of oils until the 1960's. It has been suggested that the fine quality of Scottish cured fish is directly related to the purity of Scottish salt made from unpolluted sea water. There is a growing interest in curing and smoking meat and fish at home and kits are available giving instructions and recipes. Try it. The results will be interesting and fine to eat; practice improves the quality. I have eaten delicious home-cured smoked mackerel made by the man who caught the fish. All the equipment he used was a plastic bucket for the salting and a metal biscuit tin as the smoker. He had been doing it for years. Gravaladlax is salmon preserved with salt and sugar, so are most pickles. I gave a receipt for piccalilli before, but to encourage more home preserving do try:

Recipe & Food Notes (continued)

p50 Pickled red cabbage

1 large red cabbage, cut in half, the core removed and very finely sliced salt teaspoon cayenne pepper cold vinegar either good brewed malt or cider vinegar Method Put the shredded cabbage in a bowl and cover lightly with salt. Leave over night. Next day give it a mix and then drain off all the liquid. Pack into clean glass jars, putting a little cayenne pepper in each and then pouring over cold vinegar to cover the cabbage. Tie down a plastic cover or put 2 layers of cling-wrap over the top before tightening the lid (vinegar will eat the metal otherwise). This needs 2 weeks at least before ready to eat. Good with cold meats and ham.

Method If you can't buy blanched almonds, start by blanching and skinning the almonds. Salt drying on rock Put the nuts in boiling water for about 3 minutes. Pour the water away and then just squeeze each nut between your index finger and thumb. The creamy white nut jumps free of its skin. Aim them into a bowl. It's a pleasant enough job but if you feel there is more in life than doing this the end result is less elegant but still good. Very lightly butter or oil with olive oil a shallow metal dish. Nothing else will do (Elizabeth David is very rude about other oils especially corn oil)! Shake the almonds in this and place in the centre of a cool oven, gas mark 2 / 110oC. Bake for about 45 minutes till they are the palest biscuit colour. Over cooking will make the oil taste “off” Have ready kitchen paper scattered with salt and a suspicion of cayenne pepper. Coat the warm nuts in the salt by gathering the paper and shaking. Leave to cool and serve eat within 12 hours. This is usually not a problem!

Pickled red cabbage

Almost everybody enjoys salty snacks. Salt and vinegar or plain salted crisps are the top sellers in Britain, closely followed by salted nuts, mostly peanuts. The best drinks nibble nuts must be salted almonds. This recipe from Elizabeth David is a little more work than some but it is the best: Salted Almonds Blanched white whole almonds. small amount of butter salt small quantity cayenne pepper to taste

52

Flavoured salts are good stand-bys and some are very traditional, for example celery salt offered with quail's eggs and an essential ingredient, some say, in a Bloody Mary. There are other salt mixes recommended as personal favourite additions to stews, egg dishes, bread or soups. These range from a mixture of herbs, ground cloves, ginger and cinnamon to Vanilla Salt, Rose Salt and Pepper Salt. Some are more for decorative effect and the Rose Salt is said to be a room freshener as it absorbs cooking smells. Look in Tessa Kiros’ book Limoncello and Linen Water. It must be the prettiest cook book around.
