T

he magazine has a really summery feel to it this month, so now we need just need the summer weather to make it all real. We’ve optimistically been looking at al fresco dining for this month, hoping for it to be warm enough to actually eat outside! There is a huge range of eateries in the local area where you can eat outside or just socialise and relax with a drink - from breakfast through to late evening; see our three-page guide starting on page 8. In the theme of outdoors eating, the local walk feature has a picnic theme, and the recipe this month is a BBQ recipe. Make sure you check the What’s On pages for plenty of holiday activities nearby. I’ve also been speaking to the Wester Inch Community Association about the work they do and what makes the village tick, see the article on page 20. We hope you find the magazine informative and entertaining. If you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue. Wishing all readers and customers a fantastic holiday!

Liberta Restaurant, Mid Street, Bathgate

Al Fresco Dining Snatch a bit of the slow life this summer

There are so few days of the year when you can comfortably eat outside that you want to make the most of it when you can. There’s something about being outdoors and watching the world go by on a busy street as you enjoy a long drink, or being tucked away in a beer garden for a meal, that makes life seem to slow down for just an hour or two. Maybe it’s the association with the more leisurely approach to meals on the continent. So, optimistically hoping for some warm days and balmy evenings this month, we’ve been checking out where you can go locally for outdoors dining. Starting here in Bathgate and Torphichen area, here are a few suggestions ...

Kaim Park Hotel has a terrace with six tables with full table service – take a seat outside and waiting staff will come and take your order. There is also a large garden with picnic tables on the grass so you can move down on the grass if you wish. With a kids play area at bottom of garden it’s ideal for a family meal. Breakfast, light meals, afternoon teas, evening meals. www.kaimpark.info Edinburgh Road, Bathgate, EH48 1EP. Tel: 01506 653399. 8

Liberta Restaurant, Bathgate’s Italian, have just opened a great new al fresco dining area. There are 15 tables, some with parasols, on a paved area lined with flowers and shrubs. And for special atmosphere in the evening, they have installed new outdoors lighting, and also outdoors music. It’s a perfect space for a meal or just a drink. Food served from 11am to 9pm, a new summer menu out shortly. 4 Mid Street, Bathgate Tel: 01506 635250. The James Young is a Weatherspoons pub - a

casual family-friendly eatery with a small licensed beer garden at the back. Breakfast, lunches, evening meals. www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk. 36-40 Hopetown Street, Bathgate, EH48 4EU. Tel: 01506 651600.

Toby Carvery has two beer gardens, one each side of the building, with fourteen outdoors tables in total. Besides the usual carvery food, they have a range of sandwiches and salads for the summer, as well as some special long drinks – fruity moscato (a pink bubbly) and a limited edition J2O. Open a tab at the bar, take a seat outside and staff will bring your food out to you. Breakfast, pub lunches, sandwiches, full carvery meals. Starlaw Road, Bathgate, EH47 7BW. Tel: 01506 633573. Fairway Hotel has three picnic tables at the

side of the pub – order inside and take your food outside. Their menu is very extensive with 110 items! A massive choice, so there is definitely something for everyone, from light snacks and sandwiches to full meals. In addition they have daily KONECT

the protection you deserve When your car insurance comes up for renewal, you could hunt around online for a quote, but is that really good enough to get the protection you deserve? • D o you want unlimited cover for child car seats if stolen or damaged whilst in your car? • Do you want unlimited cover for audio/visual equipment that is fitted as standard by the manufacturer or up to £500 for non-standard equipment? • Do you want cover for a standard trailer up to £1000? • Do you want temporary cover in most EU countries regardless of the number or lengths of trips? • Do you want unlimited cover for glass replacement and no excess to pay for glass repairs? • Do you want motor legal protection as standard? • Do you want your no-claims discount protected? • Do you want to be able to contact someone to make a claim 24/7? Wester Inch Community Association cultivating the village spirit

With a new housing development, a sense of community and identity doesn’t necessarily happen automatically. The new Wester Inch Village on the former British Leyland site near Bathgate is still in the development process with new houses being completed all the time. There will be 2040 homes when it is finally complete. The Wester Inch Community Association (WICA), a small committee of just seven local residents, exists to develop that sense of community in the new village and to bring people together - as well as to represent the interests of the village to the council and other authorities. I met with John, Lynne and Heather of the Wester Inch Community Association to learn more about what the Association does and why. It’s clear from talking to them that their main motivation is building the community spirit and links between neighbours within the new development. “The aim is to bring the community together, to get people talking to each other, and to get things done for the benefit of the village,” says Lynne. Wester Inch was the first new village that West Lothian Council have done on this scale, and there have been various issues relating to the land management and communications between the developers and residents. “As an Association rather than individuals, we’re a way for the residents’ voice to be heard - by West Lothian Council , by the developers and any other organisation which impacts village life.” Residents here definitely identify as villagers; it is sold as a village lifestyle, distinct from Bathgate. “I used to live in Bathgate,” says Lynne, “but moved out to the village 7 years ago.” On a typical evening children are playing in the streets and there’s a good atmosphere. The community is predominantly families, with a mixture of housing and some older people. The green spaces in the village are managed and maintained by Scottish Woodlands Ltd; deer have been spotted, and there is a family of swans on the pond so natural environment is well established.

Other achievements (working in partnership with West Lothian Council, Scottish Woodlands): • Street lighting on the cycle path from opposite Simpsons Primary School will be installed all the way out to Whitburn Road this summer • Benches installed last month by Scottish Woodlands Ltd • Bins installed last month by WLC and Scottish Woodlands Ltd • Online business directory to encourage people to use local trades and services, see the website at www.westerinchvillage.org. If you are resident in the village you can have your business added to the directory. • Neighbourhood watch has been set up • Noticeboard at entrance to village – generously donated by WLC BID, this is the old noticeboard from the steel works, a nice historic touch. • Building links with other committees, for example Wester Inch will be looking to host its own event as part of the Bathgate Music Festival in September. • Working with Simpson Primary School Parents Council

WICA projects: Community Centre: Simpson Primary School on Leyland Road is currently the centre of the village as it is the only building with space and facilities for groups and gatherings. It is let out for clubs and classes, and WICA were recently asked by West Lothian Council to take over the lets system. This would allow WICA to set fees at a lower rate and allow for more flexibility in time slots e.g. one hour instead of the current two hour minimum - enabling more classes and activities to be held in the village (such as fitness classes, children’s clubs). WICA recently managed to save the toddler group in the village which was at risk of closing . The previous committee were moving on so WICA took over the management of the group, with WICA committee members taking on the substantial

roles of Chair (Lynne ), Treasurer (Craig) and Secretary (Jennifer). With no long term commitment the day to day running of the group was made easier, allowing more parents to get involved as there is now only a rota of daily tasks. This has become so successful there are thoughts of a second session.

Whilst the committee can’t get involved in the running of individual clubs, they aim to provide all the support they can to make sure facilities are in place for anyone wishing to start a club in the village. Retail facilities in the village: “To be a ‘real’ village we need some units for a shop, cafe or other facility.” While the residents were promised retail units, as a village heart, the developer has no responsibility to build such units, only to provide space. WICA are currently working with West Lothian Council to demonstrate to potential builders that there is a demand for these units and a need for a village heart, and to demonstrate to current developers that they should either build units or sell the land for this purpose. Communication: WICA holds regular meetings for residents to find out what’s happening and to raise any concerns. They arranging public meetings to address issues arising, for example when all homes first received a bill for land management fees within the village, with no explanation, WICA were able to find out what it was about, contact The Land Management Company Scottish Woodlands Ltd and invite them to a question and answer session. Regular Public meetings are held at Simpson Primary School. Upcoming meetings: 12th August 19.30; 11th November 19.30; AGM 20th January 2016 19.30 Full minutes of all public meetings, reports and any other documents are available on the WICA website. Social events: a very important part of the work of the Association is the quarterly events they organise to physically bring the community together. Held in the primary school, they are an autumn fayre, Christmas fayre, Easter fayre, and a summer event which has a different theme each year. Fundraising: Most fundraising activities are in support of the quarterly social events. The committee has had some major wins recently on the fundraising front, securing lottery money from Big Lottery Fund which has enabled them to support the setting up of the Wester Inch Netball Club. Bus service: WICA is planning a discussion with bus service provider to encourage them to change their timetable to suit the needs of those in the village and to be more practical. Broadband: WICA is trying to continually provide accurate information, and where to find current information on the provision of Super Fast broadband. Residents are also getting involved to provide information.

For further information, to get involved or find out what’s on in Wester Inch, please visit www. westerinchvillage. org, email committee@ westerinchvillage.org or join the facebook page (search facebook for Wester Inch Community Association.) The committee would love to hear from you if you want to get involved, have ideas for fundraising, or are part of any other committees with whom links could be established.

The appliance of kitchen science brought to you by EKCO

Kitchen appliances have progressed somewhat in the past few years. Through the popularity of programmes such as The Great British Bake Off and Masterchef we’ve learned that maybe it’s not us who are wholly inadequate when it comes to making the perfect soufflé but rather the equipment you buy actually does make a difference. We’re not suggesting for a moment that you need to go all Heston Blumenthal and invest in a blowtorch that would be perfectly at ease in the welding scene from Flashdance. If however, you invest in a few additional items it could just make the difference between your fish turning out as a succulent masterpiece or something you could use to, pardon the pun, re-sole your shoes. Here are four appliances recommended by EKCO for your kitchen.

1

Food Processor – You may have an un-loved and unwrapped wedding gift at the back of a kitchen cupboard. If so it’s time to discover the delights of a food processor. A good quality appliance from manufacturers such Kenwood and Miele really will transform your cooking experience. Most quality processors have around 40 different functions from blending- for those frozen Margaritas and smoothies – to kneading, if you enjoy making your own bread by hand. If you fancy a go at baking then you’ll love the whisk attachment which beats your eggs and flour in a ‘planetary’ motion. This means the blades rotate while they also move around the bowl – try doing that with your hand whisk.

2

Sous Vide Oven – Traditionally the appliance of top restaurants a Sous Vide oven is basically a steam oven into which you place your food which is sealed in plastic bags. This method ensures that your meats and fish will be cooked to perfection.

3

Domino Hob System – Have you ever wished you had just one more cooking zone, especially when it comes to Christmas? A domino hob system could be the answer. Heated by gas,

electric and even ceramic induction a domino hob is a set of cooking zones you can add to. For example, you can have a set of standard burners but you can add a wok burning domino hob, Teppanyaki cooking zone and so on which all sit side by side.

4

Bread maker – Time for another trip to the depths of your kitchen cupboard to find that long-lost bread maker. A key factor in the war against obesity is the high number of artificial additives in processed foods rather than fat content. Supermarket bread is laden with the stuff so it’s always better – and more rewarding – to make it yourself. All you need is a bread maker along with wholemeal flour, olive oil, warm water, yeast, honey and sea salt and that’s about it. Good and wholesome it may not last as long as supermarket bread but the flavour and health benefits will more than make up for that.

WALK

Karen Murray takes a stroll along the Forth

A walk along the shoreline of the Firth of Forth is always a fabulous way to blow away the cobwebs, clear your head and chill out, particularly during the summer months. Pick a sunny day and take a picnic. There is nothing more satisfying than packing up your hamper (rucksack/plastic bag) with some yummy delights and finding a great wee spot to enjoy your picnic, and a beach walk, with a couple of historical interest features thrown in, offers plenty of spots to stop. The thought of a picnic conjures up summer days of yesteryear getting friends and family together (although growing up in my family meant picnics in all weathers. We have enjoyed a sandwich or two under a tree in the snow on occasions). So why not head out from your own home and explore and if you have time, pack the rug and the picnic and relax? When I had a chance to sneak out of work a bit early and catch a couple of hours to myself, I decided to head to the Forth and take a walk. You could of course walk for miles but I didn’t have long on this occasion so I decided on Blackness toward Bo’ness. There are a couple of lovely beaches at Blackness with great views over the water, towards the Ochil Hills. The dramatic 15th century Blackness Castle provides the scenic backdrop (and if you have time it is an interesting, historic place to visit with ruined parts and complete rooms, turrets and towers and lots of room for exploring) with the beaches and the village spread along the shoreline. With no time to linger, I planned a stroll along the shore towards Bo’ness, enjoying the peace and tranquillity. Heading west away from the castle, you follow a track above the shore which is really for access to the owners of the houses along there that all have spectacular views. At the end of the track a narrow path continues in the same direction and you can wander along it enjoying the views across the water. The Rail Bridge can also be seen and admired. You don’t have to stay on the track however, you can step down onto the shore and walk along there. I love 28

Carriden Church walking right on the shore as close to the water as possible, but you might find it a bit stony and prefer the path. The choice, as they say, is yours. After a while you will have to walk on the path above the shoreline, going straight ahead at a signpost. You will come to some denser woodland, where the path splits. Keep to the path closer to the shore which veers close to the beach as you get near to Bo’ness. At a fork, stay right following the water. The path eventually leaves the Firth of Forth to go left behind Carriden Boat Yard. This brings you to an access road where you go right to busier road, then left. You can take a little diversion here if you fancy and walk up to see Carriden Parish Church and then further up the hill, the ruins of an older church. If you have made the ecclesiastical diversion, then retrace your steps to where the path left the shore and ultimately back to Blackness. You could continue on away from the shore and into the town of Bo’ness and then grabbing public transport back to Blackness to pick up your car later, but the round trip although it is not a circular walk is a satisfying one and more views over the water on the way back are always going to be different than those on the way there as the light changes so much. The round trip is about 5 miles and will take between 2 to 2.5 hours depending on diversions to churches, visits to castles and general taking in of views… KONECT

As the nation celebrated National Picnic Week recently it raised the question of what type of ‘picnicker’ are you? Upon chatting with some of Hopetoun’s farm shop staff and customers we discovered most people fall into one of the following categories: The Sarnie Pro: Out comes the carrier bag, the squares of tin foil folded neatly around the square sandwiches cut into triangles filled with all manner of fillings. Add the multi pack of crisps, cans of juice and a token bit of fruit. All eaten off the knee of course. The Food to Go Pro: Lays out a lavish spread in the form of salads, humous, baked crisps, cooked meats and sliced fruit all served in the dishes they came in at the local supermarket - with the bonus of cute little plastic forks. The Picnic Pro: Out comes the wicker hamper, the plates, cutlery, napkins and cups followed by artisan mini pies, homemade salads, quiche and pickles washed down with freshly squeezed fruit juice or even a few bubbles. Whatever type of ‘picknicker’ you are there’s nothing better than enjoying a wonderful outdoor lunch

There are BBQ areas and picnic tables available in Almondell & Calderwood, Beecraigs and Polkemmet Country Parks and groups can hire and organise their own BBQ’s.

and it’s most likely to cost a lot less than eating out too! Don’t forget we have so many stunning picnic locations in West Lothian. For example Hopetoun House & Estate offers magnificent gardens and parkland offering unrivalled views over the Forth Estuary. Hopetoun Farm Shop near Newton has a huge delicatessen offering a range of handmade pies, pastries, cooked sliced meats from the Estate and Scottish cheeses – perfect for all types of ‘picnickers’. The shop’s local bakery range has also recently expanded and now has an entire gluten free section. We hope you all enjoy a wonderful alfresco summer enjoying whatever type of picnic you choose and wherever you choose to eat it.

property matters

“Should I Sell During the Summer Holidays?” by Craig Turpie

Some sellers feel that if they have “missed” the spring market, they should wait until September before selling their property; but there are solid reasons for marketing your home during the summer. Firstly, your house is likely to look its very best. The bright days and long evenings mean that your accommodation will look light and airy, and any views from the house will be accentuated. Your garden will be in full bloom and adds real value to the purchaser’s perception of your home - they won’t just be looking at rooms! If it is a family house, children’s slide/swings etc. can only make the house feel more like a home - a real hot button for the family buyer. Longer evenings also mean that the opportunity for positive viewings is extended, as partners can view together. Serious buyers do not let holidays, sports, etc. get in their way and are sometimes frustrated by the reduction in choice, as other sellers delay bringing their property to market or sometimes withdraw their homes over the summer holidays. Those with children may be under some pressure to secure a property before the new school year and, as a result, could be prepared to pay a higher price in return for a swift purchase. September is also a popular time for those moving jobs. They will certainly be hoping to move in towards the end of the summer so they can get the move out of the way before putting all their energies into their new position. So, if you are considering the possibility of selling, or know someone else who is, why not help us supply the demand that we’re anticipating this summer. It could pay you handsomely.

TECHNOLOGY

Safety Gadgets

How technology can keep us safe at home and when we travel Humanity could probably survive without LED barbecue lights or USB coffee cup warmers. But technology can help to keep us safe as well as pampered... One of the most interesting safety gadgets is the £89 Nest Protect, a smart smoke detector. The Protect can tell the difference between burnt toast and a serious problem, and it can warn you of problems by sending a message to your phone. The Nest Protect is part of a growing trend of home automation, with both Google and Apple encouraging firms to make devices that connect to our phones and help keep us safe. That doesn’t just mean sounding smoke alarms and keeping an eye on our houses. It can also mean keeping your kids safe. The My Buddy Tag (£39) is a smartwatch that alerts you if your child starts to wander off, or if it’s submerged in water for more than ten seconds. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and you can have more than one tag if you’re looking after more than one child. Products such as the Cuff smart bracelet (from around £40 via the US) are designed to share notifications from your phone, but they also have an alert mode that enables you to contact friends, family or colleagues in an emergency without having to reach for your phone. The US$120 Guardian Angel is based on a similar idea but takes a different approach: if you’re feeling uncomfortable

32

1. Guardian angel safety jewellery. 2. My Buddy Tag smartwatch for children. 3. Blaze Laserlight bicycle safety light. 4. Nest Protect smart smoke alarm.

3 you give it a little squeeze and it calls your phone so you can pretend you’ve been called away. Expect to see lots more such products as the interest in wearable technology increases this year, especially now the Apple Watch is on sale: developers are already working on health, safety and security apps for Apple’s wearable wonder. If you’ve ever left the house and realised you’d left something switched on, technology can help with that too. Belkin’s WeMo (from about £35) are internet-connected switches that you can automate - for example you can set heaters to go on and off according to the weather forecast or make music start playing if a WeMo with a motion detector spots movement. They also enable you to remotely switch off anything you’d left on by mistake. Fitting your house with a bunch of WeMo switches isn’t cheap, but the price of this kind of product is already falling fast. It’s just a matter of time before internetconnected switches are almost as cheap as their traditional equivalents. Gadgets can keep you safe on the move, too. The Blaze Laserlight is £125 before you start adding accessories, but it might just save your life. It’s a waterproof, USB-chargeable bike light that uses a laser to project an image of a bike six metres in front of you. That means it warns pedestrians and drivers that you’re near, eradicating the blind spots that result in so many cycling injuries (and bumped pedestrians). LED lights that make bike wheels look like circular neon signs and paint that makes bikes shine brightly in the dark will go on sale later this year too.

MUSIC REVIEW

The Shock of the New by James Kerr, Regal Music Club

After giving a kicking to the lacklustre efforts of long established bands last month, here is a karmic balance looking at new artists. None of the tracks discussed are likely to trouble Heart FM, but this is the modern world that I’ve learnt about, and each is just a couple of clicks away. Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett is being pigeonholed as “deadpan pop” which in the old days we used to call writing with wit and style. “Avant Gardner” is a wonderfully breezy tale of anaphylactic shock which sails close to the territory occupied by Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do” except when you hear it twice in a row you don’t want to smash your face through a window. Standout line: “The paramedic thinks I’m clever because I play

guitar/I think she’s clever because she stops people dying”. Landing somewhere between Thelonious Monk and Steely Dan, “Secrets Seem Rehearsed” by Diggs Duke is a warm and infectious song, short bursts of lyrical and horn driven melody alternating around urban beats. If you can get past the horror of a middle aged white guy talking to you about urban beats then give track this a try, it is impossible to dislike. Final selection is “Swedish Purse” by Wovenhand, who are described as an alternative country band, a definition prepares you in no way for the fusion of mediaeval church organ and apocalyptic folk contained in this striking track. Also, I’m cheating, because it turns out it was released in 2006 but I only heard it last week and I think you should too.

recently developed tearoom with home-grown fruit & veg and a brand new “shepherds hut” kiosk that will serve refreshments in their orchard. www. almondvalley.co.uk. Almond Valley Heritage Trust, Millfield, Livingston, EH54 7AR. Tel: 01506 414957.

Exciting news from EQHQ in Livingston– they are opening their “0506” Kitchen and Bar on 28th June, and have large garden at the back of the club with BBQ facilities and full bar service, where you can take your meal. The garden seats around 120 and, as owner Darren enthuses “with outdoors drinking, the food has to be the focus....” With their own bespoke burger and fantastic grill and rib selection, and chef coming from a Harvey Nichols restaurant background, this sounds like one to definitely check out this summer. Family friendly, food served 11am to 10pm. www.eqhq.co.uk/0506kitchen-bar 1 Almondside, Howden West Road, Livingston EH54 6NB. Tel: 01506 433367. The historic Livingston Inn has tables at the back of the pub and food served 7 days. 2 Main Street, Livingston, West Lothian EH54 7AF Tel:01506 413054.

The Lime Kiln and Tony Macaroni, both on the boulevard in Livi, have tables on decking at the front. Hopetoun Farm Grill is a pop-up style eatery

running until August at Hopetoun Farm Shop. Select your steak from the butchery then take it to the grill set up outside (there is a gazebo, and a marquee with sides in case of bad weather) to get it grilled while you wait. Selection of salads and sides, ice cream and cakes to make a meal of it, with weekly themes such as pulled meats, sausages (huge range of Hopetoun sausage) and BBQ. www. hopetoun.co.uk/farm-shop-home.html. Newton, Hopetoun Wood, Broxburn EH52 6QZ. Tel: 01506 830716.

Heading out in the Calders direction, The Black Bull Inn in Mid Calder has a small sheltered

beer garden with mature trees offering shade as well as sunny spots. Order at the bar and the staff attempt to keep up table service outside but at busy times clients sometimes beat them back to the bar! Lunches and dinners 7 days. www. blackbullmidcalder.co.uk. 4-10 Market Street, Mid Calder EH53 0AA. Tel: 01506 882170.

The Grapes Bistro in East Calder has a large

beer garden, recently totally refurbished – five picnic benches all recently renovated and all with parasols, and new flower planters making it a nice environment. If you let bar staff know when you go in that you want to eat outside they will provide full table service outside. The beer garden is open every day to 9pm, and food is served daily from 12noon to 8pm. 130 Main Street, East Calder. Tel: 01506 881896.

For somewhere completely different – Milk at Jupiter Artland is the cafe within the sculpture

park near East Calder and is open to everyone, not just for the sculpture park customers. Drive through the stunning Jenks landforms that are part of the artland, and make your way to the courtyard where there is full table service in a covered outdoors area (great for when it’s warm but drizzly) or a small sun trap garden. Open every day 10am to 5pm in July and August, and Thursdays to Sundays in September. Sandwiches, soups, light meals, amazing salads and artisanal coffees. http://www. cafemilk.co.uk/jupiter-artland located within Jupiter Artland, Bonnington House Steadings, Wilkieston, EH27 8BB. Tel: 0131 629 6022. Finally, if you’re visiting Five Sisters Zoo this summer, there is outdoor dining available at their café; they have an ice cream parlour and burger van ( weather permitting) as well as a picnic area available with a fabulous new dome. www. fivesisterszoo.co.uk Gavieside, West Calder, West Lothian EH55 8PT. Tel: 01506 870000.

River Forth Fisheries Trust

Covering over 79km of river length and flowing through West Lothian, Falkirk and Edinburgh, the Almond and Avon Rivers were at the forefront of the industrial revolution stimulating the rise of mills, mining and agriculture and shaping the communities along their banks.

The River Forth Fisheries Trust (which advances the environmental protection and improvement of all rivers which enter the Forth Estuary and the Firth of Forth) has received initial support of £1.55 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s Water Environment Fund for an exciting project that will reconnect local communities with the Almond and Avon, and improve the natural heritage for both wildlife and community enjoyment.

Rugby Club Weir next to Almond Park Over the next year the Trust will engage with volunteer groups, community councils, landowners and members of the community to make sure everyone has a chance to have a say about the projects (see box below for list of projects). Local communities will be involved in essential conservation work to restore and protect the rivers for aquatic wildlife, such as migratory fish like salmon and sea trout, as well as other species which rely on the water environment. Paths will be improved to create better access and interpretation produced in conjunction with local heritage trusts. There will also be awareness raising events, skills training with accredited qualifications, and volunteer events to promote and enhance the natural heritage. As an example, the River Almond Barriers project will look at ways to help migratory fish over the manmade barriers on the river - there are 57 suspected obstacles in the Almond catchment alone and seven main barriers that are causing the most impact for migratory fish and the river connectivity. The Trust will engage the community view on options from full removal of weirs to creation of fish paths. If you would like to be involved and kept up to date with the progress of the programme please contact Jonathan at j.louis@fishforth.co.uk or visit our website www.fishforth.co.uk/rfft and sign up to our mailing list.
