Riccarton Coffee Shop

Al Fresco Dining Snatch a bit of the slow life this summer

There are so few days of the year when you can comfortably eat outside that you want to make the most of it when you can. There’s something about being outdoors and watching the world go by on a busy street as you enjoy a long drink, or being tucked away in a beer garden for a meal, that makes life seem to slow down for just an hour or two. Maybe it’s the association with the more leisurely approach to meals on the continent. So, optimistically hoping for some warm days and balmy evenings this month, we’ve been checking out where you can go locally for outdoors dining. Starting here in the villages and Livi, here are a few suggestions...

The Black Bull Inn in Mid Calder has a

sheltered beer garden with mature trees offering shade as well as sunny spots. Order at the bar and the staff attempt to keep up table service outside but at busy times clients sometimes beat them back to the bar! Lunches and dinners 7 days. www. blackbullmidcalder.co.uk. 4-10 Market Street, Mid Calder EH53 0AA. Tel: 01506 882170.

The Grapes Bistro in East Calder has a large beer garden, recently totally refurbished – five picnic benches all with parasols, and new flower planters. If you let bar staff know when you go in that you want to eat outside they will provide table

8

service outside. The beer garden is open every day to 9pm, and food is served daily from 12noon to 8pm. 130 Main Street, East Calder. Tel: 01506 881896. For somewhere completely different – Milk at Jupiter Artland is the cafe within the sculpture

park near East Calder and is open to everyone, not just for the sculpture park customers. Drive through the stunning Jenks landforms that are part of the artland, and make your way to the courtyard where there is full table service in a covered outdoors area (great for when it’s warm but drizzly) or a small sun trap garden. Open everyday 10am to 5pm in July and August, and Thursdays to Sundays in September. Sandwiches, soups, light meals, amazing salads and artisanal coffees. http://www. cafemilk.co.uk/jupiter-artland located within Jupiter Artland, Bonnington House Steadings, Wilkieston, EH27 8BB. Tel: 0131 629 6022.

If you’re visiting Five Sisters Zoo this summer, there is outdoor dining available at their café; they have an ice cream parlour and burger van (weather permitting) as well as a picnic area available with a fabulous new dome. www.fivesisterszoo.co.uk. Gavieside, West Calder, West Lothian EH55 8PT. Tel: 01506 870000. Exciting news from EQHQ in Livi– they are opening their “0506” Kitchen and Bar on 28th June, and have large garden at the back of the club with BBQ facilities and full bar service, where you can take your meal. As owner Darren enthuses “with outdoors drinking, the food has to be the focus....” With their own bespoke burger and KONECT

fantastic grill and rib selection, and chef coming from a Harvey Nichols restaurant background, this sounds like one to definitely check out this summer. Family friendly, food served 11am to 10pm. http:// www.eqhq.co.uk/0506-kitchen-bar. 1 Almondside, Howden West Road, Livingston EH54 6NB. Tel: 01506 433367. The historic Livingston Inn has tables at the back of the pub and food served 7 days. 2 Main Street, Livingston, West Lothian EH54 7AF. Tel: 01506 413054.

The Lime Kiln and Tony Macaroni, both on the boulevard in Livi, have tables on decking at the front and of course the food chain stores in the Designer Centre also have tables outdoors. Howden Park Centre is surrounded by parkland where children can run and play, with five picnic style benches for customers near the Bistro – there’s no dining deck but customers are welcome to take their food to the tables outside. Bistro open 7 days, Monday to Friday 9.30am - 3pm. Saturday & Sunday 10am – 3pm; a dinner menu is available on selected performance nights for pre-theatre dinner. (Advance booking essential for pre theatre meals) Howden Park Centre, Livingston, EH54 6AE. Tel: 01506 773880. Almond Valley Heritage Centre has a

recently developed tearoom with home-grown fruit & veg and a brand new “shepherd’s hut” kiosk that will serve refreshments in their orchard. www. almondvalley.co.uk. Almond Valley Heritage Trust, Millfield, Livingston, EH54 7AR. Tel: 01506 414957.

Moving a little further afield....

Kaim Park Hotel has a terrace with six tables with full table service – take a seat outside and waiting staff will come and take your order. There is also a large garden with picnic tables on the grass so you can move down on the grass if you wish. With a kids play area at bottom of garden it’s ideal for a family meal. Breakfast, lunches, afternoon teas, evening meals. www.kaimpark.info. Edinburgh Road, Bathgate, EH48 1EP. Tel: 01506 653399. Liberta Restaurant, Bathgate’s Italian, have just opened a great new al fresco dining area. There are 15 tables on a paved area lined with flowers and shrubs. And for special atmosphere in the evening, they have installed new outdoors lighting, and also outdoors music. It’s a perfect space for a meal or just a drink. Food served 11am to 9pm, a new summer menu out shortly. 4 Mid Street, Bathgate. Tel: 01506 635250. The Courtyard Cafe opened in Polkemmet

Country Park in mid April. They have plenty of picnic tables in the courtyard. Serving food from 9am to 6pm, including all-day full breakfast on weekdays! (on weekends full breakfast served to 12 noon). Lunches and light meals, plus a gluten free and dairy free range. Located within Polkemmet Country Park, Whitburn. www.facebook.com/ thecourtyardcafewhitburn. Tel: 01501 228630.

The Cupcake Cafe Bar near Torphichen has a large garden with picnic tables. They are all about cupcakes and home baking (including gluten free cakes) and also serve breakfast and lunch 7 days 9am- 4pm. BYOB to complete your lunch on a warm summers day! Westerwood Farm, Torphichen, EH48 4NQ. Tel: 01506 654697. Linlithgow Burgh Halls has 7+ tables on the wonderful outdoor terrace. Take a stroll around the beautiful rose gardens after your meal. the protection you deserve When your car insurance comes up for renewal, you could hunt around online for a quote, but is that really good enough to get the protection you deserve? Consider these items: • Do you want a courtesy car to be provided if your car is stolen or damaged beyond repair? • Do you want roadside assistance cover? • Do you want a new car replacement should your car be stolen or damaged beyond repair if under 2 years of age?

• D o you want unlimited cover for child car seats if stolen or damaged whilst in your car? • Do you want unlimited cover for audio/visual equipment that is fitted as standard by the manufacturer or up to £500 for non-standard equipment? • Do you want cover for a standard trailer up to £1000? • Do you want temporary cover in most EU countries regardless of the number or lengths of trips? • Do you want unlimited cover for glass replacement and no excess to pay for glass repairs? • Do you want motor legal protection as standard? • Do you want your no-claims discount protected? • Do you want to be able to contact someone to make a claim 24/7? SPOTLIGHT ON...

Balerno Dental Practice Brian Clough is a man with a mission to improve dental health through a holistic approach to dentistry, and he has found the perfect spot in Balerno to do it... Balerno Dental Practice is delighted to be moving this summer into the former RBS building in the centre of Balerno. In keeping with the central and prominent location, practice owner Brian Clough is determined to make it much more than just a dental practice. “Given this opportunity to expand our current premises, where we are bursting at the seams, I didn’t want to create just another standard dental surgery,” explains Brian. “This is an opportunity to do something unique.” A London-based designer, Mehbs Yaqub, has been involved to upgrade the external look of the building and inside has helped create a stunning, modern, high quality, state of the art practice. Brian takes a holistic approach to dentistry and the new centre he is creating will help him to offer the full range of services that he envisages. There will be therapists on site who will be able to help with a range of issues such as phobias, anxiety, smoking cessation, stress and weight loss - all of which either relate directly to dental health (stop you getting dental treatment) and which can have a wider impact on your health and quality of life. There will be a dietician within the practice too. With the age we live in, more demands are placed upon us and this can impact on our health and wellbeing. Teeth tend to be one of the first things which get neglected, and a deteriorating dentition can lead to wider health implications. “We will also be opening the surgery early mornings and late evenings as well as Saturdays, to help those people

The new Balerno Dental Practice premises who have time constraints as a result of busy work schedules.” There has been a dental practice in Balerno since the 1950’s and Brian took over the practice in 1996. With the help, loyalty and support of patients in the local community the practice has continued to grow in numbers and Brian now has the opportunity to develop this exciting plan. “I can’t thank the local residents enough. Without their continued loyalty and support of the practice, none of this would have been possible.” The new premises will have four surgeries (two upstairs and two downstairs), a tooth whitening studio, a consultation room and two waiting rooms. The practice will also be used for community projects such as hosting children’s educational groups to play at being a dentist and learn about dental health, and to get involved with local schools. This will aim to improve the dental health and education amongst the young as well as increasing the awareness of the importance of having a great smile and healthy teeth. So if you’ve been avoiding the dentist for whatever reason – anxiety, busy-ness or thinking your teeth are not a priority – now is an excellent time to get in touch with Balerno Dental Practice, where the team will be delighted to welcome you. Pain free dental care with the magic wand!

A lot of people are put off visiting the dentist because they need to have an injection. Because of this we have invested in the wand. The wand is a computerized anesthetic delivery system which ensures patients can be numbed up pain free, unlike normal injections. The wand also does not leave you feeling numb for hours after. We now use the wand as part of our dental care and patients tell us how much it has transformed their dental experience.

As I personally think no community is complete without a cafe, I was delighted to learn about Mid C alder’s new coffee shop. Opened in June by locals Andrew and Jillian Grant, Park View Coffee Shop is located in the old school building – which has been totally refurbished – and their vision for it is much more than just a cafe. The cafe is very spacious and in the evenings it doubles as a community hall – the tables are removed and the empty room is available for hire. Interest has already been noted by dance classes, local Brownie groups and keep-fit classes. “Feedback from our customers has shown our coffee shop was a sorely needed facility in the village,” explains Andrew as we sip an earlymorning coffee in the cafe (it opens from 7.30am for full breakfast). “The great thing is that it’s all on one ground floor, so it’s easily accessible to all.”

There’s a kiddies corner with toys so it’s a perfect meet up place for parents and toddlers, and in the pipeline along with other ideas is a TV screen on the wall and a comfy seat cosy corner. Being a multi-functional community space though doesn’t distract focus from the quality of the food. Local resident Grace, cafe manager, does most of the cooking on site, and Kerry provides daily home baking. Andrew believes in mutual support of local businesses and they use local suppliers as far as possible. They run regular meal deals e.g. a Friday meal deal for school kids of a burger, juice and a treat for £2.50 and OAP specials with a hot drink and scone with jam and butter available 9am-11am daily for just £2.20 . There’s a suggestion pad for customers to give feedback; the team looks forward to welcoming you and hearing your views on how Park View can be the best possible for Mid Calder.

The appliance of kitchen science brought to you by EKCO

Kitchen appliances have progressed somewhat in the past few years. Through the popularity of programmes such as The Great British Bake Off and Masterchef we’ve learned that maybe it’s not us who are wholly inadequate when it comes to making the perfect soufflé but rather the equipment you buy actually does make a difference. We’re not suggesting for a moment that you need to go all Heston Blumenthal and invest in a blowtorch that would be perfectly at ease in the welding scene from Flashdance. If however, you invest in a few additional items it could just make the difference between your fish turning out as a succulent masterpiece or something you could use to, pardon the pun, re-sole your shoes. Here are four appliances recommended by EKCO for your kitchen.

1

Food Processor – You may have an un-loved and unwrapped wedding gift at the back of a kitchen cupboard. If so it’s time to discover the delights of a food processor. A good quality appliance from manufacturers such Kenwood and Miele really will transform your cooking experience. Most quality processors have around 40 different functions from blending- for those frozen Margaritas and smoothies – to kneading, if you enjoy making your own bread by hand. If you fancy a go at baking then you’ll love the whisk attachment which beats your eggs and flour in a ‘planetary’ motion. This means the blades rotate while they also move around the bowl – try doing that with your hand whisk.

2

Sous Vide Oven – Traditionally the appliance of top restaurants a Sous Vide oven is basically a steam oven into which you place your food which is sealed in plastic bags. This method ensures that your meats and fish will be cooked to perfection.

3

Domino Hob System – Have you ever wished you had just one more cooking zone, especially when it comes to Christmas? A domino hob system could be the answer. Heated by gas,

electric and even ceramic induction a domino hob is a set of cooking zones you can add to. For example, you can have a set of standard burners but you can add a wok burning domino hob, Teppanyaki cooking zone and so on which all sit side by side.

4

Bread maker – Time for another trip to the depths of your kitchen cupboard to find that long-lost bread maker. A key factor in the war against obesity is the high number of artificial additives in processed foods rather than fat content. Supermarket bread is laden with the stuff so it’s always better – and more rewarding – to make it yourself. All you need is a bread maker along with wholemeal flour, olive oil, warm water, yeast, honey and sea salt and that’s about it. Good and wholesome it may not last as long as supermarket bread but the flavour and health benefits will more than make up for that.

KITCHENS | BATHROOMS | BIFOLD DOORS | SUNROOMS

Many ideas, one solution At EKCO we’ve been supplying and installing top quality Pronorm German-built kitchens and bathrooms since 1999. We’re also one of Scotland’s top suppliers of Origin bi-fold doors which are designed to open fully and allow more fresh air into your home. And, if you need some extra space or simply a place to relax and unwind then we can create that lifestyle sunroom you have always dreamed of.

River Forth Fisheries Trust

Covering over 79km of river length and flowing through West Lothian, Falkirk and Edinburgh, the Almond and Avon Rivers were at the forefront of the industrial revolution stimulating the rise of mills, mining and agriculture and shaping the communities along their banks.

The Avon catchment covers Forth near Grathe main stem being roughly 31km long. 189 km2 with But these historic activities had a lasting physical impact on the rivers and downgraded their condition. The River Forth Fisheries Trust (which advances the environmental protection and improvement of all rivers which enter the Forth Estuary and the Firth of Forth) has received initial support of £1.55 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s Water Environment Fund for an exciting project that will reconnect local communities with the Almond and Avon, and improve the natural heritage for both wildlife and community enjoyment.

Rugby Club Weir next to Almond Park Over the next year the Trust will engage with volunteer groups, community councils, landowners and members of the community to make sure everyone has a chance to have a say about the projects (see box below for list of projects). Local communities will be involved in essential conservation work to restore and protect the rivers for aquatic wildlife, such as migratory fish like salmon and sea trout, as well as other species which rely on the water environment. Paths will be improved to create better access and interpretation produced in conjunction with local heritage trusts. There will also be awareness raising events, skills training with accredited qualifications, and volunteer events to promote and enhance the natural heritage. As an example, the River Almond Barriers project will look at ways to help migratory fish over the manmade barriers on the river - there are 57 suspected obstacles in the Almond catchment alone and seven main barriers that are causing the most impact for migratory fish and the river connectivity. The Trust will engage the community view on options from full removal of weirs to creation of fish paths. If you would like to be involved and kept up to date with the progress of the programme please contact Jonathan at j.louis@fishforth.co.uk or visit our website www.fishforth.co.uk/rfft and sign up to our mailing list. WALK

In search of the perfect picnic place Karen Murray shares some of the secrets of the Wednesday Walkers.

If you live in Kirknewton you may have noticed a group of dedicated walkers (imaginatively entitled the Wednesday Walkers as that is when we walk), who explore the surrounding countryside while getting some much-needed fresh air and exercise.

bottom of Smithy Brae and following the welltrodden path over the hill, across the stile at the top and into a field full of sheep. From there the world, as they say, is your oyster. Recently we have been crossing the field and taking a right turn to head toward Kirknewton House as it is Rhododendron season and they are simply stunning along the bank of the loch. I realise when you read this the rhodies may be over but no matter, there are gorgeous sights at any time of year.

I thought it was about time to share some of our walking adventures rather than simply suggest a walk. The idea is that with some encouragement you will go out and find your own favourite walking route. Alternatively you might decide we sound like an interesting bunch of walkers and join us – and you would of course be more than welcome.

In fact one of my favourite and newly-found routes is the bluebell wood – beautiful when the bluebells are out and equally so when they are not. For this route, you veer off to the left, once you have headed over the field and turned right. Just up the path you will find another wee stretch of water with yet more rhodies, ducks (and ducklings if you time it right). If you are ready for your cheese roll, this would make an ideal spot. If not, admire the view then carry on to an opening in the hedge and another turnstile gate leading into a wonderfully wooded area. Bluebells abound at the right time of year, as well as wild garlic, primroses, a babbling brook – a veritable fairy grove perfect for a picnic with kids.

Our walks are evening walks so we don’t tend to stop and picnic – although we have been known to enjoy a glass of something at the top of a hill! However, if you head out on any of the routes suggested or explore the hidden woods and fields of Kirknewton yourself, you can always go on a sunny day and take a picnic. There is nothing more satisfying than packing up your hamper (rucksack/plastic bag) with some yummy delights and finding a great wee spot to enjoy your picnic. The thought of a picnic conjures up summer days of yesteryear getting friends and family together although growing up in my family meant picnics in all weathers. We’ve enjoyed a sandwich or two under a tree in the snow on occasions. The raison d’etre of the Wednesday Walkers is to get exercise for the body and strength of the soul. The walking is important but equally so is the chat: exorcising the demons, while exercising the muscles. The light nights make for adventurous routes and in our rambles we’ve discovered some perfect picnic places. The more adventurous we get in search of new views, we realise how lucky we are to live in such a lovely village with myriad walking trails leading to fabulous panoramic vistas. A regular trail is to head over the hill behind Meadowbank. Through the ‘kissing gate’ at the 46

Wander through the woodland, over a bridge and turn left, following the slightly overgrown path as it twists and eventually comes out on the metalled path that leads up through a farm from the old Dalmahoy Road. There are once again several choices of route back to the village. You can wander the road all the way back or you can hike back over the sheep field and retrace the way you came. Other walks so far this summer have included the summits of the Dalmahoy Crag and the Kaimes Crag taking in the remains of the forts once built there and of course enjoying the 360 degree views. Perhaps this is the spot for the romantic picnic. So why not head out and explore and, if you have time, pack the rug and the picnic and relax. We don’t always know where we are going but we figure it out as we go along. If you fancy joining us we walk on Wednesday evenings at 7pm meeting at the graveyard in the village. Check the Kirknewton Community Facebook page for updates. KONECT

Wednesday walkers

As the nation celebrated National Picnic Week recently it raised the question of what type of ‘picnicker’ are you? Upon chatting with some of Hopetoun’s farm shop staff and customers we discovered most people fall into one of the following categories: The Sarnie Pro: Out comes the carrier bag, the squares of tin foil folded neatly around the square sandwiches cut into triangles filled with all manner of fillings. Add the multi pack of crisps, cans of juice and a token bit of fruit. All eaten off the knee of course. The Food to Go Pro: Lays out a lavish spread in the form of salads, humous, baked crisps, cooked meats and sliced fruit all served in the dishes they came in at the local supermarket - with the bonus of cute little plastic forks. The Picnic Pro: Out comes the wicker hamper, the plates, cutlery, napkins and cups followed by artisan mini pies, homemade salads, quiche and pickles washed down with freshly squeezed fruit juice or even a few bubbles. Whatever type of ‘picknicker’ you are there’s nothing better than enjoying a wonderful outdoor lunch KONECT

There are BBQ areas and picnic tables available in Almondell & Calderwood, Beecraigs and Polkemmet Country Parks and groups can hire and organise their own BBQ’s.

and it’s most likely to cost a lot less than eating out too! Don’t forget we have so many stunning picnic locations in West Lothian. For example Hopetoun House & Estate offers magnificent gardens and parkland offering unrivalled views over the Forth Estuary. Hopetoun Farm Shop near Newton has a huge delicatessen offering a range of handmade pies, pastries, cooked sliced meats from the Estate and Scottish cheeses – perfect for all types of ‘picnickers’. The shop’s local bakery range has also recently expanded and now has an entire gluten free section. We hope you all enjoy a wonderful alfresco summer enjoying whatever type of picnic you choose and wherever you choose to eat it. 47

Library Information

Kirk of Calder on Main Street, Mid Calder was built in 1541 replacing an earlier 12th century church; a stone Celtic cross from the original building and carved circa 1160 can be seen in the present church. The reformer John Knox is believed to have preached both inside and outside the Church, James Paraffin Young and his family were regular attendees and the composer Fredrick Chopin is known to have visited.

East Calder Library

The interior of Kirk of Calder is a stunning mix of pre reformation and Victorian architecture and the skills of a number of stone masons over the years is evident. A number of memorials to the Sandiland family illustrate the long association the Lords Torphichen have had with the Church.
