Editor’s Message Our writer James Thomson has been looking into the story of Christmas trees, where locally you can get them and craft workshops for decorating them. Our feature pages highlight local businesses offering Christmasrelated services or other special seasonal offers. Check the Clubs and Classes page at the back of the magazine for details of social, sport and support groups in the villages, and if you are involved in a club or activity locally that is not included, please do drop us a line and we will add it in for next month. As a seasonal “thank you” to our readers, we have teamed up with Facelook Beauty who are offering a completely free treatment day on the 16th December – all Konect readers will receive one treatment completely free on the day, turn to page 18 for details.
The Riccarton Garden Centre Coffee Shop is newly refurbished, and they have a great offer for Konect readers of “two for the price of one” on their lunch combo of soup of the day and filled pannini, so pop down there for a perfect warm lunch as the days get colder. They are also offering the crossword competition prize this month of lunch for two up to the value of £15, so turn to the crossword on page 48.

The Paradise Tree and Christmas Tree Baubles By James Thomson
A
As Christmas icons go the Christmas Tree is high on the list. With contrasting red baubles and surrounded by gifts, few childhood memories are more powerful. You might be surprised by the reasons this tree made it into our homes alongside the more obvious nativity scenes and how its earliest medieval tradition was at one time banned as it became considered a focus of rowdy festive revelry that told the story of paradise and good and evil. Before we explore this story in a little more detail here are some local contacts and events to help you embrace this part of the Christmas story. From early December you can select the perfect tree from the Riccarton Garden Centre, Riccarton Mains Road, between Currie and Heriot Watt park-and-ride; 0131 449 4004. At this family owned traditional garden centre you’ll find 2 to 4 foot potted trees, trees from 4 to
8
9 foot you can select before they are netted, or place special orders for trees up to 15 feet. These are “no needle drop” Nordman Firs and home delivery is available. Another option is to buy a ‘Caring Christmas Tree’ (www.caringchristmastrees.com or 0845 111 8733) as with each tree a contribution goes to provide extra support for homeless people in the Lothian’s over Christmas via The Bethany Christian Trust. Trees must be pre-ordered by 6th December and can then be chosen and collected from James Young High School near the main Livingston retail centre. Bethany also operate this Christmas charity tree collection points across most of Scotland. Balerno also has its Christmas Tree Festival again this year on the weekend 14th/15th December in St Joseph’s Centre,

p8 Balerno. You can view over 30 trees
that have been entered to win the best decorated tree competition. Saturday 14th also coincides with the Balerno’s Farmers Market and on the Saturday evening there will be a brass band concert by the Broxburn & Livingston Brass Band. Christmas Tree baubles are a representation of apples as they depict, when coupled with the evergreen Christmas Tree fir, a rather strange “winterised” apple tree. This curious ‘apples don’t grow on Christmas trees’ amalgam brings together ancient pagan traditions with the heart of Christian belief around Adam and Eve and the Garden of Paradise. Holly and other evergreen decorations are from pre-Christian winter celebrations, and Christmas decorations have drawn from this. In medieval times a popular way to convey Christian stories was through different plays, first acted out by clergy
10
but later becoming early amateur dramatic shows and so the Paradise Play was born featuring the Paradise Tree as its central prop. To use a leafless apple tree at winter just didn’t look good so instead the evergreen fir tree was used. Such was the popularity of Paradise Plays that they often became rowdy occasions and where then banned by the Church in Britain. It took our German royal connections, culminating with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, to bring the winter tradition of our Paradise Play Christmas tree back from Europe. Decorating the tree, especially for children, is the top of the list of our Christmas preparations and there are good local craft classes and children’s workshops where baubles and other tree p12 decorations can be painted, decorated

to keep kids busy before Christmas and for them to show off their handywork. Honeypot Ceramics, based at the Ratho climbing centre (www.honeypotceramics.com 0131 333 6348) have a wide range of Christmas related workshops teaching decorating techniques, tree decorations and making complete nativity scenes from scratch in clay amongst many other things. Potter Around, a pottery painting studio (www.potteraround.co.uk 01506 238961) in Kirknewton, also have a very wide range of gift and decorating classes and activities. They also have Mrs Claus dropping by to help late morning on Saturday 14th December and for adults Tuesday evenings classes on 3rd, 10th and 17 December 7.30-10pm to make your own Christmas decorations from felting, pottery painting, clay or knitting. Sending your children or grandchildren on a gift or decoration course, or even a cup cake decoration session while
you head off to the shops, can help busy parents prepare as Christmas gets closer. The Larder Cook School are running Christmas Cup Cake Fun classes for children aged 5 and over on Saturday’s (morning or afternoons) in the run up to Christmas. They are held at the Inveralmond High School, Ladywell, Livingston on the 14th and 21st December www.thelarder.org or 01506 437065. They also offer Gift Vouchers and have a new cook school opening for Easter 2014. Other local Christmas gift and decoration ideas include Chocolate Posies who creates Christmas chocolate bouquets, Christmas dinner favours, centrepieces and chocolate Christmas trees, all of which can be tailor made and posted as gifts worldwide. Find out more at www.chocolatebouquets.org, call her on 07990812511 or see her on 30th November at the annual Linlithgow Advent Fair.

Kidzeco shops have a new shop opening at Unit 3 Livingston Centre (www.kidzeco.net) and have recycled children’s goods and handmade gifts. They are an award winning local social enterprise set up to benefit families in West Lothian. For Christmas, alongside craft classes and a Santa’s Grotto, they will have special treats for children, and fairies and elves running the shops. Their Christmas Post Box provides a magical reply (in the post) for every child that sends a letter to Santa. West Calder bike shop Pedal Power has a literally massive selection of kids bikes, kids helmets and kid’s bicycle clothing this Christmas. To get knowledgeable advice for both the novice and enthusiast cyclist visit www.pedalpower.org.uk, telephone 01506 873123 or call in at what they describe as Scotland’s biggest concept bike store, spread over 3 floors at 13 Main Street West Calder.
And finally it’s all aboard on the Union Canal again for the famous Santa Cruises run by the Bridge Inn at Ratho (www.bridgeinn.com 0131 333 1320). Join them at the Elves Workshop before sailing to Santa’s Magical Island Grotto. Weekends of 7th/8th & 14th/15th and 20th to 24th December with 5 cruises a day from 11.30 till 4.30 or 6pm. For adults there are Christmas Party Barge cruises, Christmas Lunch cruises or you can group book for your own Christmas party afloat. So back now to deciphering the Christmas tree story; well what can I say - it’s really just an Adam, Apple and Eve tree.

my son and we’re both enjoying settling into West Lothian. My interests include stomping around the beautiful country parks around here and making my own jewellery. I can’t wait to get started with the Kirknewton Community Development Trust and am looking forward to meeting you all.”
Over the next few months we will be letting you know what youth groups your donations to the ‘I Love KN’ Fundraising Challenge have gone towards. New Kirknewton Community Development Trust Youth and Volunteer Co-ordinator Jennifer Ba meets the local Kirknewton Tae Kwon Do Club at the Church Hall. With the Trust’s donation of £100 from the ‘I Love Kirknewton’ Fundraising Challenge the club purchased training equipment - pads and shields. Darren Scott, who runs the club, said, “These assist the children by providing targets that develop focus, coordination, power and strength. Once again, many thanks to Kirknewton Community Development Trust and the people of Kirknewton for their kind donation. It’s been very much appreciated.” Information on how to join the club is detailed on our website at itkdc.com.

This town is coming like a ghost town…
A
village. This design idea was taken from the Alt Scherbitz Asylum in Germany, the premise being the patients would be living in a community not just a hospital – fitting then that when it closed it was because of the concept of care in the community being the best way to care for psychiatric patients.
As many of you will know I like to find destinations for walking with the general proviso that they may be incorporated into whatever else I am doing in my day. Now as part of my job I am very often heading to Bathgate on the back road via Dechmont along the A89 and I always notice the old Bangour Village Hospital and see several cars parked in the small car park in front of the entrance. After several drive-bys I came to the conclusion that it must be a dog walker’s destination and was a little surprised as I had assumed it was closed to the public. So one day when passing with some time to spare I thought I’d check it out. I parked my car with the others and headed past the entrance gateway expecting some sort of security personnel to come and stop me at any moment. Noone did although I did feel a little under dressed without a pooch in tow. It transpires that unless you believe the place is haunted, which many do, it is the perfect place for a mid afternoon stroll, albeit a bit of an alternative stroll. Built as the Edinburgh district asylum and opened in 1906, today it is a little like walking through a ghost town as it was designed on the colony system, creating a wholly self contained village with its own farm, bakery, workshops, recreational hall, church, water supply, drainage and even its own railway. There is something a bit eerie about walking through a completely abandoned and deserted
By Karen Murray
The hospital was requisitioned by the government War Office during both wars when it became The Edinburgh War Hospital and The Scottish Emergency Medical Hospital, reverting back to a psychiatric hospital between and after the wars. It was also the local maternity hospital for a while – maybe some of you were born there? The site extends to some 220 acres and many of the buildings are listed. The ‘villas’ were set within landscaped grounds, and built in a 17th century Scottish Renaissance style, so they are really rather attractive to look at. It is tempting to peek inside them but they are of course boarded up now – too many vandals having attacked them in the past. As you wander this ghost town and its grounds you will come across the Edwardian Baroque hall and a Romanesque style church, designed by HO Tarbolton and built between 1924 and 1930. They are buildings worth a look at in their own right if you are even p28 a little interested in architecture.

Local Walk (continued)
p26 The site has only been completely
abandoned since 2004 and since then it has been identified by successive local plans as a redevelopment opportunity largely focussed on the residential conversion of the existing buildings. I guess that is what will eventually happen and perhaps it is only right and proper but part of me thinks what a shame to lose this interesting and historic unusual walking location, particularly as I have only recently discovered it. I mean to make the most of this place for afternoon walks, despite not owning a dog. Who said you needed a dog to go for a brisk and energising walk? I will definitely be going back to explore further while I can. Maybe the site will become a film set – a year after it closed, it was the main filming location for ‘The Jacket’ starring Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody and produced by George Clooney. Shame I missed him! However there have been no more films, just a location for police riot training. You can walk around the old hospital in any direction and wander at will but there is a real feeling that you should follow the village route – you enter the site and walk a path with houses either side. Straight ahead is what was the shop and café and the urge is to stop for refreshment. If you go left there is a long walk round several wards or villas and to the right it is similar walk but in a circuit, bringing you back to the start.
Then of course there are the green areas and all the paths and winding lanes; so many that you could never hope to fully explore the place. It is really quite magical with the overgrown bowling green now sprouting a myriad wild flowers and lampposts covered in moss, the original road lost to the greenery. What’s more, despite being set just off a busy main road and pretty close to the M8, when you are in the middle of this strange place, it is eerily silent. Perhaps I have been slow to realise that Bangour had all this walking potential, but I am happy to have found somewhere that encompasses several things – a place to stop and walk when I am and about for work; a really intriguing site with history and architecture and of course somewhere with a choice of walking routes all there for the exploring.

Technology The heat is on
E
Halogen heater from www.SoundlightUK.com
Every year, heating our homes becomes ever more expensive, and as a result we do all kinds of things to cut our bills: we make sure our homes are properly insulated, turn the thermostat down a notch and do our best to save energy. But no matter what kind of heating system you have, there's a very good chance you're heating your entire home rather than the room you're using. Wouldn't it be great if you could heat just the bit you're in - and do it quickly so you don't have to sit shivering? That's the thinking behind Dyson's fan heaters, which use the firm's "air multiplier" technology to send a steady stream of hot air without the buffeting you get from normal fan heaters. They aren't cheap expect to pay £249 for a heater, or £349 for one that can cool air in the summer - but they're safe, effective and extremely efficient. If you'd rather not spend quite so much on a heater, halogen heaters are worth considering: instead of heating the air, they heat whatever you point them at and they do so instantly, which is a real boon if you've just come home from a typically cold November day. Prices start at around £15 for a basic model, and you can also buy models designed for heating outside areas. For larger rooms, it's worth looking for heaters that can rotate: that enables them to heat a wider area than immobile heaters can reach. Make sure they have anti-tilt shut-offs too, so that they automatically switch themselves off if they're accidentally toppled. The cheapest heaters around are fan heaters, which as the name suggests use a fan to blow air over a heating element. According to the Energy Saving Trust they
42
Cool gadgets to keep you warm this winter By Gary Marshall
aren't less efficient than other kinds of heating, but the less powerful the fan the longer it'll take them to heat a room: we wouldn't recommend trying to heat a high-ceilinged room with an £8 fan heater from the local supermarket. If you spend a lot of time using a computer you'll know that your fingers are often the first things to feel the cold. Technology has the answer to that too: V8 Tools' heated computer keyboard is exactly what it sounds like, although for the time being you'll need to import one from the US. Avoid USB-powered heating devices: products such as USB-powered Monkey Hand Warmers are novelty gifts, not practical products. If you often suffer from frozen feet there's a gadget for that too: the AccuLux foot warming mat, a flexible heating mat that's designed to make your tootsies toasty. Expect to pay £39.99. Humans aren't the only creatures to benefit from heating pads: they’re available for pets too. A quick search on eBay uncovers all kinds of electric pad heaters for dog and cat beds, with prices as low as £19.99. If you'd rather not leave anything electrical near your pets, microwaveable heat pads do much the same job for slightly less money. While you're microwaving things for your pets, why not warm up some pads for yourself? You can try a pair of microwaveable slippers, a microwaveable hand warmer or a microwaveable neck wrap, and if you're suffering from sports injuries or arthritis you might find they help ease your symptoms too. Alternatively you might like to try the Heat In A Click Muscle Warm Pad, which quickly heats up to 54 degrees celsius and last for 20 minutes to two hours depending on the size of pad you buy.

Spotlight on:
An interview with Andy Russer, The Paint Shed Hutchison Terrace Store Manager
What's your background in the paint and decorating business?
to achieve the best results. I get a sense of pride and satisfaction when customers come back in to tell me how they got on.
The Paint Shed
I was in the army for 22 years repairing weapons! before changing direction seven years ago to start work in the paint and decorating industry. I have always been keen on decorating as a hobby, I have worked extensively on my own home and have assisted lots of friends and family with their decorating projects over the years.
What would you like to change or improve on for the future?
How is The Paint Shed different from other paint and decoration suppliers?
Everyday we have a great mix of both trade and retail customers, also our new extended opening hours over the weekends are very popular. I would like to encourage more trade customers to pop in. We are a one stop shop for all your painting and decorating needs.
What I love most about working in The Paint Shed is the people, it has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to work in and I have a great range of products to offer my customers. I particularly enjoy helping give customers the confidence to take on the projects they are planning, by giving them advice on products and techniques

Green Fingers
Gardening in November By Anne Pinkerton
T
This is the end of the gardening year - time to tidy up and put the garden to bed for winter. By now bulbs should have been planted for next spring but if you see offers you can’t ignore in the local shops plant them quickly. Plant trees and shrubs now before the ground in really chilled by the frost. Make sure they are well supported while the root system establishes itself and that there is a good amount of compost mixed into the bottom of the planting hole. Carry on collecting leaves and setting them side to make leaf -mould.
Dig over the empty areas, add compost. Support sprouts and other tall brassica to prevent wind rock. Harvest the first of the winter vegetables parsnips, cabbage, leeks, kale and carrots will all be beginning. Check and treat if necessary fruit trees for canker. It is said that wet acid soils are part of the cause so treat with lime and lighten the soil with regular addition of compost. Cut out all infected steams and burn them. You can spray with Bordeaux Mixture as the leaves are starting to fall and then again as they are nearly all gone. Tie on grease bands against coddling moth and keep the ground under the trees clean. Think about sending a gardening magazine subscription to friends for their Christmas present, or enrol them, or yourself, with a local plant or gardening society. It will give interest for a whole year, may teach them interesting skills and perhaps make new friends! You can also become a friend of Edinburgh Botanics or just attend some or their workshops, lectures or courses. Recipe & Food Notes
N
Nuts are a highly nutritious and healthy source of vital minerals and fats.
Except in baking, there is not a big tradition of cooking with nuts in British food but now that food from all over the world is available to us we are learning to use them in more interesting ways. Cashews go with chicken in eastern and Chinese cooking; pine-nuts and chestnuts are much used in Italian food and coconut is found in curries from India, Indonesia and in Caribbean dishes. Nuts are found in many sweets and chewy bars, think of the purple Quality Sweet - it has a brazil at it core. And what is Nutella if not creamed hazels in chocolate. All the muesli and high energy chew bars are packed with nuts because of their high food value and healthy image.

Macaroons • 110gm ground almonds • 179gm caster sugar • 1 teaspoon plain flour • 2 egg whites lightly whisked to a froth • 2 drops almond oil • rice paper for baking • split almonds for decoration Method Pre heat the oven 180°C Mix the almonds, sugar and flour together; add the egg whites and oil and beat very well together. Spoon out into mounds on the rice paper, space apart because they will spread. Top with a split almond. Bake for 20 minutes till pale brown but still soft inside. Non-stick baking paper is fine for macaroons but the traditional ricepaper has become part of the finished article.
In sweet food nuts combine well with chocolate, coffee and orange and are found in ice-cream, cakes and breads. They make some of the world's classic confections such as praline and almonds are also part of many celebrations in the form of marzipan at Christmas and in Simnal cake at Easter. Macaroons are, for me, the nicest sweet nut confection and are easy to make if you take care. It is claimed that the best macaroons come from Nancy in France where they are made by an order of nuns. The business started, if the legend is to be believed, because the nuns needed to support themselves in the mid 16th century when church reform took away their lands and left them only an almond grove. Necessity was the mother of a particularly tasty invention : 54
Peanut butter need not only be used on toast or bread and butter. It can serve to make a very good spicy sauce in the style of Indonesian Sate Sauce.
