Editor’s Message Welcome to the October issue of the Konect Directory. One of the best things about editing this magazine is getting to know more local people and businesses. This month I interviewed Dr Rev André Groenewald, minister for Kirknewton and East Calder parish, to find out more about the role of a modern parish minister. This issue is choc-a-bloc full with local businesses as usual who can supply everything you need for house, garden and family, and some fantastic offers for Konect readers. Please support local people and check this magazine first for anything you need!
Congratulations to Lawrie Ross of East Calder who won the crossword competition last month. This month, Jacqui of Beauty Within Therapies is offering a luxury facial for one lucky reader. Based in West Calder or mobile, Jacqui has also got a great offer on this month of £5 off any treatment over £20, see her advert on page 22 and also try the crossword on page 46 for a chance to win the luxury facial. As usual, a technology update, What’s On, Charity of the Month and all other regular columns are included. I hope you enjoy the October issue. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory and for supporting local businesses!

The modern parish minster
W
What is the role in the community of a modern parish minister? In times past parish ministers used to oversee the local schools, dispense the “poor funds” to the poor of the parish, hand out penalties and fines for minor misdemeanours. But what role do they play in our communities today? I visited André Groenewald, minister for Kirknewton & East Calder Parish and interim moderator of Polbeth Harwood linked with the West Kirk of Calder to find out. He makes me a cup of tea in the manse – a modern house behind East Calder church – and bubbles with energy and enthusiasm for his calling. “I see it as my role to get involved in community life as much as possible,” says André. “I think if the church isn’t part of the community it becomes irrelevant” he adds. He lists the things he is involved in – besides of course taking two church services every Sunday morning, one in East Calder and one in Kirknewton. He is on the East Calder gala committee; he started the Kosy Kafe in Kirknewton; is involved in Kirknewton Community Development Trust; he is chaplain for all schools in the parish, carrying out assemblies, Christmas and Easter services in schools; he was on the East Calder Graveyard Restoration Committee, helps out at East Calder Dementia cafe, keeps in touch with Graeme Morrice MP, Angela Constance MSP, and the two councillors Dave King and Carl John, he is the chaplain of the local Boys’ Brigade and the Scouts of West Lothian, visits the sick at home and in hospital, carries out weddings and funerals.....the list goes on and on.
8
An interview with Rev Dr André Groenewald Mondays are supposed to be André’s day off, but he finds it hard to let go and relax. His door is always open to anyone who needs him. “We’re very lucky here in West Lothian that the council is supportive of many community initiatives,” he says. When he goes to events locally it is in order to muck in and help out practically - not because he wants to convince people to go to church. “My interest is not only in the 400 or so people who are part of my congregation, but also in everyone who lives in the parish.” André comes from South Africa, but left the country in 2008 after he and his family survived three attempts on their lives. Why did he choose to come to Scotland? “The Church of Africa and the Church of Scotland are similar in many ways. I had visited a friend in Scotland years ago, and wanted to come back. Scottish people are warm and friendly – although they are not used to being hugged by strangers! I get away with it,” he adds, “because I am ‘foreign’!” Back in South Africa, André’s early career was in academia. He did his doctoral dissertation on the philosopher Nietzsche, and lectured at the University of Pretoria. He can read ancient Greek and Hebrew; he is fluent in Afrikaans, Dutch, one of the local African languages and of course English. Now, he says, “I am just a parish minister.” But by the sounds of it “just a parish minister” is exactly what he wants to be and he is throwing all of his considerable energy and enthusiasm into his calling as a minister.

Spotlight on: 1st Choice Living
T
The former adult learning centre building on Glasgow Road in Bathgate was totally refurbished last year by 1st Choice Living, the local home improvements company who now occupy the building as their showroom. Quality of workmanship is a priority for any home improvements project, so when selecting a company it's good to be able to inspect their work. A visit to 1st Choice Living's showroom is an opportunity to see the range of what they can do – the building had been empty for a couple of years before they acquired it and refurbished it from floor to ceiling, so everything you see has been done by the fitters who will be working on your own project. I visited the showroom to browse what they have to offer and to meet Derrick Findlay, who owns 1st Choice, and learn more about the business. Derrick has lived in Bathgate for just over 10 years. After gaining experience in various industries he settled in the glazing industry, working for a large glazing company for several years before deciding it was time to run his own show. So in 2008 he launched 1st Choice Glazing with £500 worth of stock, operating from his garage at home in Bathgate. The business has expanded rapidly and the team now numbers 21 local employees and has branched out to cover not just glazing but kitchens and bathrooms too. So what is the secret of their success? “We're customer-focused,” says Derrick.”I think it's all about how we face challenges, and our attitude to customer service. When you book a home visit appointment with 1st Choice, our appointments are a maximum of 35 minutes – you won't have a pushy sales person in your house for an hour 16
pressuring you to buy from us.” Word of mouth recommendations have played a big part and Derrick lets their workmanship speak for itself. “All our fitters are employed by us so we have tight quality control. When taking on new fitters we look for people who take pride in their work.” The new showroom opened its doors in December 2012. Derrick has retained the separate rooms inside the building so it feels more like a real home, unlike the typical cavernous showroom, allowing you to get a better feel for what the various installations are like in a real home. There is a welcoming atmosphere and it was buzzing with visitors and employees when I was there. There is a kitchen/sunroom area (where I enjoyed an expertly-made latte from kitchen!), various bathroom ideas as well as blinds, shutters and accessories. “Our showroom is unique in the Central Belt in that you can see kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, the full spectrum of products in the one building” explains Derrick. Whether your home improvement project is large or small, make 1st Choice Living on Glasgow Road, Bathgate, your first port of call to see the showroom, chat to their friendly staff and see how they can help. See advert opposite.

Good parenting for dogs; is it me or is it the dog? By James Thomson
K
Karen Stanfield knows a thing or two about dogs; after completing her four year degree course in Veterinary Nursing, Kirknewton-based Karen divides her time between being a veterinary assistant at the Pentland Veterinary Clinic in Currie and running her own dog training and dog behaviour classes and workshops in Livingston and Whitburn. The Pentland clinic is a friendly and well-established practice which specialises in ‘small’ animals (no call outs to tend the sheep and cattle roaming the Pentlands) and is a thriving growing family business. Karen has recently been appointed the first representative in Scotland for high profile TV dog training expert, Victoria Stilwell, whose 40 series programme “It’s me or the Dog” used to run on Channel 4. Karen, and Victoria, specialise in a form of training described as ‘force-free’; it focuses on educating, rather than more aggressively disciplining, your dog to behave well and be well adjusted. Victoria is expecting to return to our TV screens next year in a new series. This is after her second TV series that she took to the USA which started on a cable channel called Animal Planet. It might be argued that dog care in America is, like many stateside norms, truly like being on another planet. There are doggy Summer Camps, events such as ‘Strut Your Mutt’ – a dog sponsored walk to raise money for, yes you’ve already guessed, worthwhile doggy charities. There’s the ‘how did we live without it’ TV channel for dog viewers called DogTV - which fills that missing part of a lonely home-alone dog’s life by providing the genuinely needed mental stimulation that dogs need. There’s doggy day care with the ever popular ‘blueberry facial’ which many Californian dog owners swear by and consider completely normal; and then of course there’s yoga for dogs.
24
Yes but let’s be proper and call it by its right name - Doga. Getting all four feet back on the ground and returning to our more reasoned local reality, Karen’s D.O.G.S (karensdogs.co.uk) which stands also for Dog Obedience & Guidance Sessions, offers a variety of practical classes and services. Dog training is usually focused on younger dogs with a short programme of inexpensive workshops which are limited to small groups (3-5) with owners always attending. Dealing with behavioural issues, let’s be polite and just call these bad habits, is on a one-toone basis and with many working owners leaving dogs unattended for long spells can often be caused by the lack of mental stimulation, not just exercise, that dogs require. The essence of everything that Karensdogs supplies is based on the philosophy of positive reinforcement. Dog owners are routinely surprised at how quickly this approach can transform their dog’s behaviour. Food plays an important part as well - not only as a reward to help dogs learn but Karen can also explain how certain dog foods with the dreaded ‘E’ additives can, much like some children get hyperactive on a high sugar diet, have a very negative effect on a dogs behaviour. Karen can be reached on 07912 844034 or email her at karenstanfield@gmail.com

Green Fingers
Gardening in October By Anne Pinkerton
Y
You can expect every type of weather so be adaptable in the garden work you think of undertaking.
Check, clean, mend and store tools. Tidy all garden chemicals and store in a safe place or dispose of them properly if they are no longer needed. Give the grass its last cut and then empty the fuel and put the machine away clean. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf. Keep on top of collecting the leaves, if they accumulate leaves harbour pests and fungal spores for next season. If you have space, put the leaves in black bags and leave them alone in an undisturbed corner for 2 years to become leaf-mould. It becomes a really useful mulch and enhancer of the soil. Cut back perennials that have died down. Divide herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse. Harvest apples, pears, potatoes and the last of the tomatoes. If they are green make chutney. Plant garlic and brassica plants, especially spring cabbages. Prune climbing roses and if you are sheltered give hedges a last trim. Evaluate the year and begin looking at your catalogues and make lists of seeds to order. There is still much pleasure to be had from garden visiting. Autumn colour can be shown to great advantage by the lower angle of the autumn sun. Drummond Castle near Crief has a fine collection of trees which glow gold, red and bronze. Visit the Kirknewton Allotments Association website kirknewtonallotments.wordpress.com

Technology
Light up your life
A
As we come into the winter, we start to need more light in our homes both day and night. There seemed little new in the lighting market for many years, but this has all changed now and from energy saving and long life to remote control, the technology has come out of the dark ages. The most obvious change in lighting is the end of incandescent bulbs and the arrival of low energy lighting. While early CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs were pretty horrible and couldn't be dimmed, today's models are far nicer and can even be bought with remote controls to dim and brighten them. The big news though, is the rise of LED. Light-emitting diodes aren't just incredibly cheap to run; because they don't get as hot as other bulbs, they are much more versatile. They're already a common sight in car headlamps, and you can replace most of your house's incandescent bulbs with LEDs for relatively little cash - including halogen downlighters, which were previously difficult and expensive to replace with LEDs. When you combine LEDs with sensors, things start getting interesting. For around £12 you can get LED motion detectors, which light up stairs and other potential hazard areas and a LED in an external motion-sensing security light will give you the same peace of mind as before without the enormous energy drain.
As technology gets smaller and cheaper, it also gets smarter. Wouldn't it be great if your lighting linked in to your wireless network and could be controlled by your

Sensors, smartphones and serious savings By Gary Marshall
phone? That's already available: Philips' Hue lightbulbs do just that, enabling you to change both brightness and colours - so you might use a gently brightening yellow glow to wake you in the morning, or point at a photo to get the lighting to match its colours. It'll be a while before such technology is every day affordable though - a starter pack will currently set you back £179 for one controller and three bulbs but it's still quite exciting. Another exciting idea is Wemo, Belkin's wireless technology for home automation. You can already buy Wemoenabled plugs, and now you can buy Wemoenabled light switches. Once again it isn't cheap - expect to pay around £39.99 for a light switch and the same for a plug socket that you can use to control table lamps - but the technology is interesting: you can combine Wemo with the “If This Then That” web service, so for example you could add a motion detector to switch on the hall light when you open the front door or get the light switch to activate at sunset each evening. If you like the idea of motion sensors, light sensors or timers for your lighting but would rather not shell out for expensive smartphone-connected kit, you don't have to: a simple but effective motion and sound-sensing light switch will set you back less than £10, an electronic timer light switch will cost less than £10 and one with a built-in sensor will only cost a few pounds more. The smartphonecompatible hardware may have the wow factor, but lower-tech options won't give your wallet the "ow" factor.

Recipe & Food Notes
P
People have used vinegar in food, as a preservative and for their health for thousands of years. Most food cultures have their own vinegar. Our word comes from French “vin aigre” or sour wine. However good vinegar is not just sour wine, great skill and controlled production is required. Many flavours can be added to vinegar lemon peel, garlic, chilli, tarragon or mixed spices are the most common. Making flavoured vinegars is easy. It only requires sterile bottles, non -metallic seals, good quality vinegar and the fruit, herbs or spices preferred. White wine vinegar seems to take herb flavours better than red wine vinegar, which is better with chilli or pickling spices. Fruit, for example raspberry, damson, blackberry or elderberry is better with red wine vinegar but lemon peel or flowers will be nicer with cider or white wine vinegar. Combine the ingredients you want to use in the clean bottles and leave for about one month to infuse. They will keep until the fruit or other flavouring is no longer covered. Mushroom and Blackberry Vinegar salad starter 450g small cap mushrooms sliced black pepper, salt 1 onion finely sliced 5 tablespoons walnut or extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons blackberry vinegar chopped parsley, thyme or chives Bring the oil and vinegar to nearly boiling point and then pour over the seasoned vegetables. Leave to cool. Scatter the herbs on top. Eat with crusty bread. Warm salads of carrots, spinach or finely sliced red cabbage can be made this way with the best vinegar to enhance the flavour. Pickled eggs Excellent with autumn salads and cold meats. 12 cold, just hard boiled hen’s eggs or 24 quail’s eggs ,Shelled

Vinegar

1 ½ pts. Malt vinegar or distilled vinegar or cider vinegar 6 cloves garlic, peeled 1 level table spoon each white pepper-corns and allspice Small piece root ginger if liked Have a wide necked glass jar ready sterilized. Boil the vinegar and spices gently for 10 minutes. Leave to go cold. Pack the eggs into the jar(s), cover with the vinegar. Leave the spices in if you wish or, for a milder brew, strain them out. Cover and leave to mature. Keep in a cool dark place. Ready after a month. Chutneys can be made from many vegetables or fruits, and are an ideal way of using up ripe or green tomatoes, courgettes, squash, plums or windfall apples (cut out any damaged or blemished parts). At this time of year there are gluts. The other essential ingredients for successful chutneys are vinegar, sugar, salt and spice. Added flavour can come from onions, chilli and garlic. For safety reasons, always use stainless steel or aluminium pans for chutney. Always use clean, sterilized jars with plastic screw tops for preserving. Cellophane can be used under a metal screw-top to prevent it being rotted by the vinegar. Tomato Chutney 3 kg ripe tomatoes skinned and deseeded 100g salt 6 large onions thinly sliced 250g soft brown sugar 6 green peppers de-seeded and finely sliced grated rind and juice 2 lemons 2 1/2 pts. Vinegar teaspoon each: ground ginger, pepper & mace Put all the ingredients in a large pan and simmer slowly till thick. This can take up to 2 hours. Put into jars and leave to mature for a month or more. Apples can be used in place of the peppers.
